Product Description
Through wonderfully descriptive writing, Simon details the work of fifteen detectives, three sergeants and a lieutenant charged with investigating dozens of Baltimore's 234 murders that year. Simon takes listeners inside the detectives' lives, describing the frustration of departmental red tape and politics, the bursts of energy and moments of despair.

With an eye for the scenes of slaughter and pursuit and an ear for the cadences of cop talk, both business and banter, Simon gives this brilliant, harrowing account its authenticity and fascinating edge.

Simon plants us so close to these detectives that we see everything--the Police Department, the prosecutors, the courts, the city of Baltimore itself--from their angle. This is a never-before-seen look at what it's really like to investigate murders for a living.Amazon.com Review
This 1992 Edgar Award winner for best fact crime is nothingshort of a classic. David Simon, a police reporter for theBaltimore Sun, spent the year 1988 with three homicidesquads, accompanying them through all the grim and grisly moments of their work--from firsttelephone call to final piece of paperwork. The picture that emergesthrough a masterful accumulation of details is that homicidedetectives are a rare breed who seem to thrive on coffee, cigarettes, and persistence, through an endlessly exhausting parade of murderscenes. As the Washington Post writes, "We seem to have aninsatiable appetite for police stories.... David Simon's entry is farand away the best, the most readable, the most reliable and relentlessof them all.... An eye for the scenes of slaughter and pursuit and anear for the cadences of cop talk, both business and banter, lendSimon's account the fascination that truth often has." ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too dry
Read too much like a police methods textbook. Way too dry and boring for my tastes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
I have read this book more than once, and recommend it highly. It gives one a true insight into those who we trust, and appreciate, for their efforts to protect and serve. It is gritty and hard hitting, and well worth the read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly fascinating expedition into the killing streets
I was a reluctant late-comer to the series, "The Wire" on HBO. I read about the show on several websites, saw it in the news, and heard from friends. I finally decided to give the first few episodes a chance. Well, I immediately ordered the entire first season, then the entire five seasons on DVD. I consumed 60 hours of the show in a matter of a month or so. I was hooked.

After finishing "The Wire," I felt like I still wanted to know more. So I ordered Homicide and The Corner to see if Simon wrote as well as he produced television shows. I was not disappointed.

Homicide is a great companion to The Wire. Many of the stories that unfolded in The Wire turned out to be real life stories of things that Simon witnessed or heard about when writing Homicide. For example, the shooting of the mouse in Bunk Moreland's wife's closet was told by a real detective in the book. Many of the colloquialisms from the show are explained and used with regularity in this book.

This is a book that I could not put down. I stayed up well past my bedtime every night with this book until it was done. If you like true crime, if you like The Wire, you will love this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Read, Especially for Fans of 'The Wire'
This is an incredible true crime book that looks, in fantastic detail, at a year of Baltimore's murder cases.Simon covers all the bases, from the quirky detectives, medical examiners, and state's attorneys, to the victims, their killers, and the largely unhelpful witnesses and bystanders.Simon truly immersed himself into the mean streets of Baltimore and the amount of detail he gleans really shows through. The primary focus is on the detectives and the manner in which they go about solving their cases. Some are very casual about the victims they must avenge, while others are very tortured and let cases take over their lives.Outside of being an excellent look into homicide investigation, this book is also very insightful when it comes to human psychology and behavior in general.

Also, if you're a fan of the 'The Wire,' you'll notice that there are several situations and direct quotes from 'Homicide' that find their way right into the show.

All in all, it's a wonderful and entertaining read, and it comes highly recommended to 'Wire' fans and otherwise.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Good book, very interesting view into the workings of the Baltimore PD. It has many interesting stories and insights. The thing that keeps it from being a five-star book are that it is somewhat disjointed, which means that it remains on the edge of being gripping without quite crossing the line. Solid 4 stars. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Certainly interesting, but not for everyone: Diamond Nebula
As I read this book, I struggled to find some way to describe it to others, some appropriate comparison. I finally decided that this book was very much like a cross between _Naked Lunch_ (William S. Burroughs), _The Day of The Triffids_ (John C. Wyndham) and a long, drawn-out piece of David Bowie fan fiction. That was as close as I could get, barring hand gestures. This book is very interesting, very thought-provoking science fiction. It is also deeply weird.

The story opens on a post-apocalyptic, halluciantory version of a human city on Earth. Five survivors of the "change-over" live in the city, trying to cope with their new lives and pursue their ideas. The survivors, and the city itself, are obsessed with a trio of celebrities: J.G. Ballard, Andy Warhol, and David Bowie. The survivors, as they attempt to live their lives and take the final steps towards leaving Earth for the Diamond Nebula, break down due to the stresses of living in a world with no purpose and no sense. Throughout, David Bowie, led by his alien brethren, prepares for his own journey to the Diamond Nebula.

The plot is revealed indirectly, and must be extracted from the bizarre imagery and narratives of each character's actions. There is very little dialogue; rather, the author allows the reader to absorb what's going on by way of description and each character's thought processes. The book is written mainly in third person, allowing for a sense of detachment that is also evoked by the devastation of the setting and the character's fatalistic attitudes. The book is confusing at times, rather far-fetched, but not to the point of affecting the readability of the story. Occasionally the book seems repetitious because of the prominence of J.G. Ballard, Andy Warhol, and David Bowie, and the repetition seems like part of a paranoid delusion. But this is needed for the plot, and contributes positively to the book as a whole.

Diamond Nebula is certainly very good science fiction. There are flaws, of course. The bizarre details of the story will shock and annoy, perhaps bore, some readers. The obsessive attention to the life and work of the celebrity triptych may seem tiresome and repetitive. Basic knowledge of the careers of Andy Warhol and J. G. Ballard are important for understanding the work, although it is not necessary to be a huge fan of them. However, the life and works of David Bowie, and the folklore surrounding him, is explored in detail, and some readers may be left in the dark if they have never studied anything related to Bowie. If one is determined to read this book, he or she ought to read up on Bowie, or read it in the company of a knowlegeable fan.

In any case, this book is interesting and will provoke much thought about extraterrestrials, David Bowie, apocalypse, film, music, pop culture, and many other things. It is poetically written. If nothing else, Diamond Nebula is entertaining as bizarre science fiction. It's worth a chance. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Love Wilbur Smith
What a great writer.Wilbur Smith could write about wallpaper and I would find it interesting.I just wish more of his books were available on Kindle since I will no longer by a paperback....

4-0 out of 5 stars HOW TO GET THE DIAMONDS
Very intense adventure story.A battle between two men (Benedict and Johnny) who were raised as brothers. They are searching for diamonds is South African waters.Benedict's sister Tracey figures into the mix.Keeps you turning the pages.

2-0 out of 5 stars Totally Unbelievable Tale
This book falls in the bottom five of the 28 books that I have read by Wilbur Smith. There is no review of the African continent that is so prevalent in his other books. No intermingling of the diverse peoples that populate this country that you find in most of these books. Here there is nothing here but greed and sex without purpose and typical family squabbles.

To my knowledge diamond mining has never been done in this fashion in Africa.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Adventure !!
Is blood thicker than, well ..... diamonds!Wilbur Smith, writing in 1971, explores the rivalry between an estranged foster-child and heir to the Van Der Byl diamond fortune and his rival "brother" Benedict.Throw in the love of a woman and whammo you gotta adventure novel.

"The Diamond Hunters", while not Smith's best novel, is nevertheless a fantastic read.As Smith's has matured over the years his novels have become a bit more tedious. Not so with Hunters.

"The Diamond Hunters" comes right at you from the first page. There is action, adventure, love and scenery.

Just about every Wilbur Smith novel is good. This one will not disappoint you.It is fun, fast and entertaining.Well worth your time...
