Product Description

The two-volume Praeger Handbook of Human Resource Management is an indispensable resource for anyone with a question relating to workplace practice or policy. Volume One contains information organized by HR task or topic: Recruitment and selection, employee development, performance management, compensation and benefits administration, and employment law. Volume Two covers organizational issues like leadership and HR strategy, organizational development, change management, and general HR issues and workplace policy. Written by experts of all stripes, including HR professors, HR consultants, and practicing HR managers, this is the one-stop, preeminent source for all things HR. Anyone with personnel duties—whether VP for Human Resources or office manager—will find actionable answers to all their questions quickly.

Personnel management is a critical business function. Make a mistake in, say, firing an employee, and soon you may find yourself on the phone with a lawyer. This handbook will help readers avoid personnel potholes and snares. Volume one of this set tells—among dozens of other topics—how to hire well, train employees, evaluate and develop workers, fire legally, set compensation, and abide by federal and state employment laws. Volume two rises above the trees for a look at the forest: leadership development, succession planning, managing change and conflict, creating emergency response plans, managing teams, forecasting employment trends, measuring results, and acquiring HR credentials. In addition, volume two will help companies develop workplace policies on everything from suitable dress to disciplinary procedures to work life balance. Entries in each category are short and to the point-from 500 to 1,000 words. Sprinkled throughout are longer, overview/theory pieces on subjects like performance management, selection, training, and HR Strategy. And the set will contain an extensive bibliography, resource section, and checklists on topics like hiring, safety, termination, training, and more. The Best Places to Work for are also the most profitable and the most fun. This handbook helps lay the foundation for building a rewarding, inspiring, and productive workplace, where people come to work each day with smiles on their faces.

Product Description
We were very honored to have been the editor staff for Jerry S. Dixon on both his book, “Rocky Traverse” and his book, “Wild for Alaska” and he bestowed another honor to us when he allowed us to publish his second book. Working with Jerry was a journalistic experience like no other. He was able to take us along with him through his words – up the mountains he climbed, through the waters he navigated and on the trips he took. We also got to experience exciting life through him and then gratefully we were able to keep his life experiences alive forever for others to enjoy. Jerry had been a smokejumper, a fire management officer and a fire ecologist for the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service. He had been a Yukon River angler and a cabin builder, a climber, a kayaker, an extreme skier, a conservationist, a guide, a writer and a teacher of the gifted... this adventure, Wild For Alaska, allows anyone taking the time to read to be able to see Alaska through the eyes of beauty, fun, and excitement - both the past, present-day, and the future. ... Product Description
Henry Brown doesn't know how old he is. Nobody keeps records of slaves' birthdays. All the time he dreams about freedom, but that dream seems farther away than ever when he is torn from his family and put to work in a warehouse. When Henry grows up and marries, he is again devastated when his family is sold at the slave market. Then one day, as he lifts a crate at the warehouse, he knows exactly what he must do: He will mail himself to the North. After an arduous journey in the crate, Henry finally has a birthday -- his first day of freedom. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, True Story
This is a great resource for teaching about slavery. It is based on a true story. It gets the idea of what slaves went through across to children.I like to share it with elementary children before Martin Luther King day so that they understand why we needed the Civil Rights Movement. It is a little sad, but Henry does reach freedom.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Great book that tells a true story. My four-year-old grandson was enthralled with it, thus beginning to learn about slave history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for your Library
I have to admit I bought this book because it was on sale, it won an award, and because it was on a tough subject and thought it would help teach my children about slavery.I didn't know if my daughter would like it at all, but she LOVES it!It is one of her all-time favorite books! She is almost 5 and my almost 2 year old likes it, too.Its a very sad book, but its something we need to know about and to teach to our children. It blows my mind that this took place in recent history and after I read the book, I think about that in amazement and gratitude that it is not like that anymore.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than just freedom of speech
Henry wanted more than just freedom of speech. He wanted freedom from working in poor conditions, freedom to always be with his family, freedom to be counted as a person. This is an excellent book to introduce children to the topic of slavery in elementary schools. They can make the connection to how they would feel if their families were taken away, or they were not even allowed to sing in public. There is no question that this book deserved the Caldecott Honor Book award.Between the detailed and beautiful illustrations to the descriptive text, this book has it all plus a lesson about slavery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mail Yourself as Cargo?
Close your eyes if you will and imagine what it would be like to curl up in a box and ship yourself as cargo. Hard to imagine isn't it. For one brave salve, Henry Brown, this became his way to escape to freedom.

Sold away from his family as a child, Henry Brown did what many slaves had to do. They accepted their lives as slaves, but continued to dream of freedom. Henry soon found himself married with two children and the reality of being separated loomed each day. Their greatest free now reality exploded before Henry as he watched helplessly as his family was dragged away.

A man who found happiness from within and with his family, Henry became withdrawn and resolved to escape to freedom. His ingenious idea of mailing himself as cargo and with the assistance of a white doctor, Henry did just that.

Come along on this heart wrenching journey to freedom through the true story of Henry "Box" Brown. You'll find your heartbeat racing for his safety.

He is best known for his participation in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral, along with Doc Holliday, and two of his brothers, Virgil Earp and Morgan Earp. He is also noted for the Earp Vendetta. Wyatt Earp has become an iconic figure in American folk history. He is the major subject of various movies, TV shows, biographies and works of fiction. Earp's boyhood home in Pella Wyatt Earp was born in Monmouth, Illinois, on March 19, 1848, to widower Nicholas Porter Earp and Virginia Ann Cooksey (who were wed on July 30, 1840, in Hartford, Kentucky). From his father's first marriage, Wyatt had an elder half-brother, Newton, and a half-sister, who died at the age of ten months. Wyatt was named after his father's commanding officer in the MexicanAmerican War, Captain Wyatt Berry Stapp, of the Illinois Mounted Volunteers. In March 1849, the Earps left Monmouth for California but settled in Iowa. Their new farm consisted of 160 acres, seven miles (11 km) northeast of Pella, Iowa. On March 4, 1856, Nicholas sold his farm and returned to Monmouth, Illinois, but was unable to find work as a cooper or farmer. A semi-rural alternative to bustling Los Angeles early in the 20th century, Hawthorne grew through the World War I years, welcoming oil wells and eventually airplane factories. The city became home to the chart-topping Beach Boys, athlete Jim Thorpe, and the greatest glamour blondes of their times, Marilyn Monroe and Mattel's Barbie. Bisected by Hawthorne Boulevard, the main north-south thoroughfare through the South Bay region, Hawthorne's notable events ran the gamut, from the annual Kiwanis Parade'second in California prestige only to Pasadena's Tournament of Roses' Parade to a furious 1971 police gun-battle with the desperate Charles Manson gang. Today, the city is a support community to Los Angeles International Airport and the aerospace industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hawthrone (CA) Images of America
This book was great!I was raised in Hawthorne, and loved seeing all of the old pictures, and reading the history.I purchased this book for my dad for Father's Day - he loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful Book on Hawthorne
This book gave me a deeper view of a city that I pretty much grew up in.It was very interesting to compare the old historical photos with what the city has today. (Sad to see the true Hawthorne Plaza torn down for the Mall.) If I had any complaints, it would be that the book lacks text content. More story telling of Hawthorne's past aong with those great photos would have made this an A+++++ book. ... Read more

The Department of Defense asked RAND to examine alternatives for the final assembly and checkout (FACO) process of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). The authors considered alternatives to Lockheed Martin's current plan of carrying out all JSF FACO work at its Fort Worth, Texas, plant. RAND looked at single- and multiple-site options for performing FACO at four plants across the country. The authors found that no efficiency, effectiveness, or cost reasons exist to move FACO operations, or to split them between two sites or across multiple sites. ...
