2-0 out of 5 stars Not A Believer
Not particularly satisfying, as autobiographies go. Dolenz glosses over, or skips altogether, large chunks of his life--including eras that one would presume to be important (his second marriage, for example)--and instead, focuses on delivering an arsenal of cornball jokes (you can practically hear the ba-dump-bump drumbeat after each gag) that only your grandfather or six-year-old would find funny.

While it's interesting to read about the Monkees' rise to fame and fortune, their battles with network brass and other PTB (Powers That Be), etc., Dolenz's omission of any meaningful romantic involvements (save for his first wife), seems glaring, and his slightly-barbed comic descriptions reduce bandmates to one-dimensional stereotypes. Attempts to give the bio a light-hearted, zany flavor (ala the TV show), ultimately doom it to being a substance-lacking monologue with few insights into what has to have been a fascinating life so far.

Perhaps now that Mr. Dolenz is in his sixties, he might consider revising this memoir, delving a little deeper, and producing a work that does better justice to the colorful span of years he's spent on this planet.

Oh, and by the way, Micky--in spite of this review, you were always my favorite Monkee.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wish he'd walk down my street
As a teenager watching Monkee re-runs my favourites were always Davy and Mike. But this somewhat manic memoir has given me a new appreciation for Mickey. He wears his talents lightly and seems to have survived the whole Monkee mayhem with humour and intelligence intact. His voice, after all, is the one associated with the biggest Monkee hits. He acts, he sings, he drums and yet he never comes across as being too wrapped up in his own talents. He is funny about the other Monkee members but never mean-spirited. He doesn't come across as bitter or twisted about his rollercoaster ride from youthful fame to middle-aged MOnkeedom somewhat lacking in the respect or recognition he deserves. There's other stuff going on in his life but he's always ready to dip his toe in that impressive pool of Monkee hits. He doesn't dwell too much on his own song writing ability, and sniffily dismisses a song of his, "mommy and daddy' that gave me chills the first time I heard it. This is no warts and all tell-all, it probably raises more questions than it answers, but it does reveal a man comfortable in his own skin who can laugh at himself. Move over Davy and Mike, Mickey's my man now!

4-0 out of 5 stars Micky tells it like he lived it.
This book is an easy light hearted read, a mix of fun and facts. It has enough information to keep you interested without getting too overblow. The avid Monkees fan may want more details, but this book will entertain you even if you weren't that big on the Monkees.Micky isn't bitter about his time as a Monkee, so he's not dishing out a lot of negative stuff or throwing blame around. The Monkees were often criticized for being a manufactured band and given no respect for their work. All that negative stuff could leave a bitter taste, but Micky is glad for his time as a Monkee and takes it all in stride. He doesn't take himself too serious and reflects on the good and bad times in his life without bitching. If you're looking for a deep, finger pointing tell all, look else where. This is Micky being Micky.

3-0 out of 5 stars fun, easy read
This is a fun, easy to read memoir with humor and anecdotes. I loved the Monkees as a child and saw two of the reunion concerts, but without Micky there. The music is still great, timeless and this was a pleasant, albeit small insight into the band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun, Insightful and Entertaining read from Dolenz
This is not a tell-all tale or a date by date history, it is a quick re-telling of a performer's life with some fun dramatizations and stories.

All of the classic one-liners and side-comment humor you've come to expect from Mickey Dolenz is present on the page in this autobiography. There a lot of great stories involving The Monkees and other major pop stars of the 60's, but nothing is covered in incredible (or credible for that matter) depth. Dolenz doesn't claim to know all the facts, just that he is telling the story from his point of view, but it is very tongue in cheek re-telling, not a lot of emotions are presented.

This is a light read, but Dolenz tells us that is the point and that we should go out and do something meaningful after being entertained by his book.I was entertained, mission accomplished.

The "Updated" portion of the book is really just a quick synopsis of Mickey and the Monkees' careers after the original published date of the book as recounted by the co-author, so don't expect any insight into the "Justus" reunion from Dolenz.

I say buy it for a quick read at the beach or a rainy day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MICKY
This book is Great !!My husband and I play the trivia with each other to see who is smarter !! I love Micky Dolenz and I am very happy with his book.I even learned a few things LOL

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best rock trivia books I have ever read!
Boy, was this book a great find! I was very pleased with this new book from former Monkee Micky Dolenz. After flipping through just the first few pages, I was delighted to discover the range of questions and the interesting answers included. Micky has done a great job of capturing everything about rock music that has made it so much fun over the years.

The game layout in the book is both useful and clever. It allows the reader to only see any given question at one time while each successive answer is on the following page. There's a "How to Play the Games" section in the front of the book that explains game format very well - once I was done reading it, playing the games was a snap.

There's also more in this book besides trivia questions. Micky tells classic stories about meeting The Beatles and gives a poignant remembrance of his friend, singer/songwriter Harry Nilsson, that alone is worth the price of the book.

As a big-time Monkees fan, I was pleasantly surprised to find this book in the 40th Anniversary year of The Monkees. Micky's still one of the greatest, and this is probably one of the best rock trivia books I've ever read. If you like rock 'n roll trivia, you will be SO happy that you bought this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm A Believer
I recently acquired a copy of Monkee Micky's Rock and Rollin' trivia book. When I picked it up, I figured it'd be mostly about the Monkees and such, but no.... Micky's done his homework and is putting us through our pop culture paces over a period of four decades.I own 1000+ CDs and I did NOT know that Paul McCartney is the guy saying "Quite rightly" during Donovan's Mellow Yellow.:) This book is a blast, and will often send you scurrying back to your CD player, if not your old turntable, to check it all out.

I highly recommend it to my fellow baby boomers, as well as to our offspring who find earlier rock and roll music to be history of interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars I could care less about the stupid Monkees...
...but this is a good book. The story is fun, interesting and suspenseful and the illustrations are amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars 41/2"Here We Come, Bi-Pedaling Down Your Street..."
"...Gak gets the funniest looks from, almost every monkey he meets..." Like author Mickey Dolenz, Gak is a monkey (I suppose Dolenz is actually a "Monkee"), but, unlike Dolenz, Gak is notable for walking on two feet. In fact, he's the first bipedaling monkey in the "Big Trees" community.Dolenz explains that Gak is a hominid, a creature that began to walk around 4 million years ago--in approximately the same era as "Lucy," the famous example of "Australopithecus afarendis." Dolenz includes these facts in a forward, a sincere sounding account of anthropological curiosity. These opening comments make Dolenz seem genuinely absorbed by his subject, rather than just another celebrity cashing in on the recent children's book craze.

While the pre-human setting is remote, the theme is familiar: Gakky's ability to walk on two feet makes him different. The other monkeys call him names ("Gakky Two-Feet"), and Gakky has self-doubts. Telegraphing the story's plot, Dolenz has Gak's mother say: "You should never be ashamed of being different." Someday that difference might turn out ta be helpful."

Dolenz introduces another folktale motif ("The Forbidden Lands")when risk-taking "Frizz" dares the young monkeys to run through the dangerous "Tall Grass," and anyone who doesn't is a "scaredy cat." Gak replies assertively that the thing he's afraid of are "the big cats," the lions who "would have us for lunch if they couold." Gak's argument persuades no one, and, to no adult's surprise, the group siin runs right into the hunting territory of a huge, hungry lion. Gak heroically scoops up a cute female monkey ("Gleeb") who can't run fast because of a childhood accident. Just as his mother predicted, Gak's difference proves very helpful" His two-footed stance makes him tall enough to guide all the other monkeys safely home, but not before the lion makes one last ferocious leap at Gak and Gleeb.

The story flows well, and illustrator Dave Clark's simian faces individualizes the monkeys. (He also resists the temptation to draw them as the musical Monkees, although one or two reminded me of Peter TOrk.Yeah, I know, cheap shot...).Clark uses orange, brown, and other warm tones for the grasses and jungle floor, all canopied by the green jungle treetops. His watercolor and ink drawings skillfully depict action and emotion. One very minor complaint is that much of the nocturnal story takes place during low light conditions, and the pictures are a little dark. Some reflected light would have helped here. Moreover, the lion looks a bit too much like a Disney knock-off, but at least he's emulating one of the best.

Dolenz has a light but remarkably informative treatment of evolution and natural selection. He focuses on how physical features might be advantageous in certain environments, and he cleverly gives a very subtle nod to the role of reproduction: When the rescued Gleeb mentions that Gak would make a "fine husband," her friend asks, "But what if your children are like Gak and walk around on two feet?" Gleeb glibly replies, "THat might not be such a bad thing after all."Dolenz, who looks fit and friendly on the inside back cover, has writing talent that transcends his fame as the one who played the drummer. Still, it's difficult not to remember his past...

"We're too busy singing,
to put anybody down..."

An excellent book for any primate.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's ok to be different!
Both of my daughters love this book. It is a cute story with wonderful illlustrations. My younger daughter who is 3 years old, insists that I read this book to her at least once a day. This story has a great message for our little ones. It lets them know it is ok to be different. In a time when acceptance by their peers is so important and our children feel the pressure to be just like everyone else, it is nice for them to know that it is our unique abilities that make this world a wondeful place.

5-0 out of 5 stars Micky is the greatest
I had the opportunity to meet Micky Dolenz and was probably the first person to get the book signed for me son.In reading the book, it is as sweet as Micky himself.Being a Monkees fan, I wanted the book.My kids liked the story and the pictures. It was a great gift and so well written. He can sing, he can act and he really understands kids and what they want to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Keeper!
I pre-ordered this as a Monkees fan but I'm not a pushover- I have an 8 year old son and am still living to talk about it!
This book is absolutely charming AND smart-marvelous illustrations and enough information to get kids to think but not dry. We are pretty jaded about kids' books these days and we really like this one. It was fun to tell my son and my husband, "hey, did you see who the author is?" ... Read more

His grandparents William Alfred Nelson and Nancy Elizabeth Smothers gave him mail-order music lessons starting at age six. He wrote his first song when he was seven and was playing in a local band at age nine. Willie played the guitar, while his sister Bobbie played the piano. Product Description
(2 Audio Cassettes/2 Hrs.) Narrated by Micky Dolenz, who was the child star of the TV series Circus Boy before his musical career with The Monkees, reads this hugely entertaining glimpse into a world that constantly turns normal on its head. Memoirs of a Sword Swallower is Daniel P. Mannix's autobiography as a sword-swallower with a traveling sideshow, illustrated with photos from the 30s and 40s taken by the author. An example of Classic Americana, this book offers a portrayal of a vanished world of working-class performance artists who earned a living by their unique bodies and imaginations. Stars include the Fat Lady, the human beanpole, the Ostrich man who ate broken glass, and many more. The "tricks" behind eating fire and swallowing swords are explicated with clarity and candor. This book will appeal to all who speculate about the outer limits of pain, pleasure, and revulsion. Mannix went on to become the supreme noir historian of the 20th century, penning Those About to Die (about the Roman games in the Colosseum), a biography of Aleister Crowley called The Beast, The Hellfire Club (about an upper-class British secret society), and many more. Mannix was sent a membership card from Anton LaVey's Church of Satan, although like Marcel Duchamp and Groucho Marx he was not a joiner, preferring to remain staunchly independent. ... Read more

Dorothea Snow?British annuals are normally a collection of new and reprint material with color and black and white interiors. Published annually in hard cover, they are dated, if at all, one year ahead of the copyright. Most annuals contain illustrated text stories, comic strips and features such as puzzles, games, sometimes-even articles. Annuals based on comic strips are normally a collection of reprint material TV shows often Annuals based on TV shows often carry many photos from the show. The art, mainly unaccredited, is average to good. The book, 20 pages, contains 1 all text illustrated stories.Circus Boy is an Action/adventure/drama series that aired in prime time on both NBC and ABC from 1956 to 1958. It was then syndicated on Saturday mornings. NBC aired the Screen Gems series during the 1956-57 season, before it moved to ABC for the following season. After his parents, "The Flying Falcons", were killed in a high-wire accident, young Corky (Micky Braddock, later known as Micky Dolenz) was adopted by Uncle Joey the Clown (Noah Beery, Jr.), and the whole Burke and Walsh Circus family. The young lad quickly found a role in the circus as water boy to Bimbo, a baby elephant whom Corky would come to consider his pet.
