Product Description
Between your full-length mirror and high-school biology class, you probably think you know a lot about the human body. While it's true that we live in an age when we're as obsessed with our bodies as we are with celebrity hairstyles, the reality is that most of us know very little about what chugs, churns, and thumps throughout this miraculous, scientific, and artistic system of anatomy. Yes, you've owned your skin-covered shell for decades, but you probably know more about your cell-phone plan than you do about your own body. When it comes to your longevity and quality of life, understanding your internal systems gives you the power, authority, and ability to live a healthier, younger, and better life.

You: The Owner's Manual challenges your preconceived notions about how the human body works and ages, then takes you on a tour through all of the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of you. After taking a quiz that tests your body of knowledge, you'll learn about all of your blood-pumping, food-digesting, and keys-remembering systems and organs.

Just as important, you'll get the facts and advice you need to keep your body running long and strong. You'll find out how diseases start and how they affect your body -- as well as advice on how to prevent and beat conditions that threaten your quality of life. Complete with exercise tips, nutritional guidelines, simple lifestyle changes, and alternative approaches, You: The Owner's Manual gives you an easy, comprehensive, and life-changing how-to plan for fending off the gremlins of aging. To top it off, you'll also get the great-tasting and calorie-saving Owner's Manual Diet -- a thirty-recipe eating plan that's designed with only one goal in mind: to help you live a younger life.

Welcome to your body. Why don't you come on in and take a look around?Amazon.com Review
If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers’ Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.

With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most important, how many times a year do most people have sex??Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.

The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: first, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, second, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars very interesting but quirky at the same time
Really enjoy this book. It covers so much of the human body and has quirky, amusing and entertaining cartoons to explain how everything works and the design of our features.

3-0 out of 5 stars basic, fun, but too basic
This book IS informative, and tries to make the human body more easily understood. It works in a sense, but is maybe such an oversimplification or written in "plumber" language that just makes it like a cousin once removed. It does have some good information, but it's definitely not a "page turner."

3-0 out of 5 stars A useful survey of knowledge, not in depth
A good layman's guide to a healthy lifestyle and diet, as well as common diseases and causes.Though most
are a direct result of a western diet and didactic medicine.Recommend; "In Defense of Food".

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book.Easy to read!!
This is a great book with lots of information laid out in a very reader friendly format.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smart, simple ways to care for your body
In the words of Oprah's favorite doctor, Mehmet C. Oz, and his co-author, Michael F. Roizen, "We're not going to make the science simplistic; we're going to make it simple." Their book describes how your body works in understandable, engaging terms and gives you an easy-to-follow strategy for making adjustments that will extend your life and improve your health. Roizen and Oz take you on a tour of your body, beginning with the heart and covering all the organs. They include a realistic diet and workout plan, fun illustrations and answers to common questions. getAbstract recommends this guide to all those well-intentioned people who know they should eat right and exercise more, but want to understand why. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Where are they?
I can remember when comics were "big". There are some you never hear of today, such
as: Johnny Quick(he has to repeat a formula in order to change from a professor to Johnny Quick);Airboy(he had a airplane that had wing that would flap just like a bird):The Heap(sort of like a huge hairy hulk):Mr. America(had a red or orange suit);Blackhawk(had a group of different nationalities and a oriental side kick called "chop chop"). DOES ANYBODY ELSE RECALL THESE 'SUPER HEROS'/

5-0 out of 5 stars DC Characters
Perfect book to add to your library especially if you want to learn more about super heros/villians who make cameo appearances in movies.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some plagiarism involved
I'd be very wary of some of the information in this AND the previous printing.I happen to know that the entries for two of the "Marvel Family" characters were plagiarized.Mary Marvel's was lifted off a fanfiction website and Captain Marvel Junior's from a role-playing game site.I know this because I originally wrote them and neither jibe with "history" listed in the DCU Captain Marvel's entry.

4-0 out of 5 stars A classic expansive detailed overview of the heros & villiains in the dc universe which is an essential character reference
What can be said about this encyclopaedia that hasn't already been said? I had the previous 2004 edition I was thrilled to have that one, this new expanded encyclopaedia is spectacular. This book is exhaustive on referencing over one thousand DC characters, origins, significant events in DC mythology. It provides a definite order to the pandemonium of DC characters and history in a most visually acceptable way. The encyclopaedia focuses on teams, places, weapons, vehicles, battles and everything that is DC. Emphasised in more brand new pages are the icons of DC mythology like Batman, and Superman which have been around forever in that their are Rich in characters even of the most obscure and overlooked forgotten individuals. The art work is so legendary enviable that it,s beyondthe norm of realistic in that all the characters seem to jump out of youi in the book in all directions. The cover is a masterpiece of expansion in that Alex Ross isthe most artistically talented artist ever to have imagination and flair that go beyond the norm. This is a book for true DC aficionados that no true DC lover can be without it will become a collector's item because everything about it is fabulous. Not only does it supersede the 2004 edition but it also has an added 48 brand new pages in it with expanded detail on some characters of a more pronounced nature in it with updates and new storylines including the recent Infinite crisis story. This book will be even more successful than the previous one. An essential DC mythology and character reference of all the charcters good or bad in the dc universe.

3-0 out of 5 stars Editorial Disaster but An Exciting Book for Superhero Enthusiasts!
For collectors who enjoy collecting books about comicbooks and superheroes, this is an essential piece of your library. I am happy to own it, bu I would have been extremely frustrated if I paid the original list price.

The DC Comics Encyclopedia, by DK Publishing, reflects some of the sloppiest editorial work I have ever read from a professional book publisher. I have been in education most of my adult working life and I expect a higher standard of quality work from my teenage students when it comes to reviewing and editing their own work.

I am not qualified to evaluate the accuracy of the information but you don't need to be an expert to spot the many flaws. Many pictures are mislabeled. Some sentences just stop midway and pick up with the next sentence. I have even found what looks like editorial notes that were clearly intended for one of the many contributors. It is incredible to believe that this would miss the watchful eye of the editor and publisher and actually make it to print.

As a reference book, The DC Comics Encyclopedia still has value. I can only hope that the person or people responsible for the sloppy work are not hired on for additional projects in the near future. Comics may not be considered "high literature" but for those of us who admire the work of the creators, artist, writers, and publishers of comic books...we, along with the creators, themselves, deserve more respect than what is evidenced by the work in this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars brilliant and lovely
*Brilliant* and lovely coffee-table-style book.An absolute must for both diehards and newcomers to the genre.Text alone may be considered superficial yet cursory. The story of the studio's fantastic-themed output is laid out simply, chronologically, without too much pontification.Mallory does takes note to debunk a myth or two along the way (Chaney's actual real name; Karloff and Lugosi's working relationship; etc) and generally lays out a factual if fanboy-ish timeline of the films.Standing alone the text might not have been five-star material, but paired with page after page of superb stills, any quibbles would be minor.(One aside on the photos:my memory had classed Lon Chaney, Jr as a fat, lunkheaded slob ... but dude is the quite the dapper dandy in pix from his "leading man" roles!I stand corrected, Lon!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Universal Studios Monsters: A Legacy of Horror
So, in times when computers and massive special effects seem to dominate movie making, taking a glimpse back to the times when real artists made real works of art. If you like cinema this book is one "must". These artists built hollywood and you have to know about them. Besides, nowadays filmakers often look back to this artists and make tributes to them (Benicio del Toro's Werwolf for example, Coppola's Dracula, etc.). If you are a movie fan, this is a book that completes the cinema experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great gift for the spooky one!
I gave this book as a gift for my hubby (Birthday on Halloween) and he LOVES it! I enjoy looking through it as well... The book is perfect for anyone who is a fan and can appreciate old classic horror movies. It has great full page photos of many classic actors in and OUT of makeup/character. That is rare to find. The price was wonderful as well. Its almost doubled in stores...

4-0 out of 5 stars If you like pictures of Universal Movie Monsters...you'll enjoy this!
I purchased this book at the same time I bought the 100 YEARS OF HORROR Dvd Set narrated by Christopher Lee.

Because I had read most of the information in earlier books, I didn't really learn anything new about the Universal Studio Monsters. However, the photographs were sparkling...and the 1-4 page write-ups on the actors were certainly interesting.

Fortunately, I bought the book through Amazon.com and saved about $14.00 from the $40.00 retail price. Had I paid the latter amount I would have been disappointed.

For those who own kittens or puppies, I'd suggest that you keep this book where they can't reach them.My black kitten (Mushy) immediately went for the paper jacket.I guess he wasn't crazy about the "Bride of Frankenstein's" hairdo!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you need one book about Universal Monsters than it is this one.
Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3G0MLAPIBE772 Great book covering very nicely Universal classic characters and movies. It starts with little history of Universal Studios and continues with silent period and spotlight on Lon Chaney. Every chapter is finished with spotlight on actor or director important for Universal monsters period. Book is so nicely written and it is full with pictures and poster art for all the movies. This book covers a lot but if you need more I am suggesting you get yourself this one Universal Horrors: The Studio's Classic Films, 1931-1946

If you need a book that covers very nicely basics of Universal Studios Monsters than it is certainly this. You will not regret it. :) Enjoy :)

4-0 out of 5 stars Basically a writer of morality tales, a camouflagued talent.
I read the book with satisfaction when it was first released, but did not jump to write a review. When thinking back over the author's portfolio, this is my main impression. His special talent is in telling stories which show that military tactics involve a loss, and that it takes particular moral and mental courage to decide and act, and to be responsible, when less than all is known or obvious -- he's got that narrative down to the fine level of a classical morality tale.He is so good at this aspect, but perhaps is not internally conscious of it.He is great in writing clear and positive morality tales around sudden challenges, in a wide imaginary range of fictional circumstances.I hope this helps and does not hamper his productivity with ongoing creative concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A story line with many strong twists and turns
Michael Z. Williamson's CONTACT WITH CHAOS provides any military science fiction collection with a strong story revolving around the first aliens humans encounter and a mass of political interests surrounding it. Add the revelation that the aliens are not as simple as first expected and you have a story line with many strong twists and turns.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really, really..Not Good
This is the sort of thing pre-pubescent boys might like but for anyone who as read any good science fiction it falls far short. Formulaic and appears to have been made up of novels from bette authors.

3-0 out of 5 stars I expected more
What can I say?I love the author's other books. He is absolutely top notch. But here, I felt like I was constantly waiting for something to happen.Anything.*crickets* When something finally happened, it was all too brief.I liked the characters and the concept.I like the universe he has created, but I had to make myself finish this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent continuation of an excellent series
I enjoyed Contact with Chaos very much. While set in the same universe as Freehold, The Weapon, and Better to beg Forgiveness, it is different from those books in that there is less violence and more of a world building view involving contact with a non-human sentient race.
The book is fun to read and very thought provoking.
I highly recommend it. ... Read more
