Excerpt: James Alvin "Jim" Palmer (born October 15, 1945), nicknamed "Cakes," is a former Major League Baseball right-handed starting pitcher who played his entire career for the Baltimore Orioles (19651984). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990. As of 2008, Palmer and his wife Susan have homes in Palm Beach, Florida, and in California. In 2006, Palmer also acquired a penthouse condominium in Little Italy, Baltimore, which he uses while in Baltimore for Orioles' broadcasts. Palmer was born in New York, New York; shortly after his birth, Palmer was adopted by Moe Wiesen, a garment industry executive, and his wife Polly from Harrison, N.Y. After his adoptive father died in 1955, the 9-year-old Jim, his mother and his sister moved to California, where he began playing in youth-league baseball. In 1956, his mother married actor Max Palmer, from whom Palmer took his last name. Showing talent at the amateur level, upon graduating from Scottsdale High School, (Scottsdale, AZ) in 1963, Palmer signed a minor-league contract at the age of 18. Before heading to the minor leagues, Palmer was initiated into the Sigma Chi Fraternity at Arizona State University, although he never attended ASU. Palmer has been considered one of the best pitchers in Orioles and major-league history. He was a mainstay in the rotation during Baltimore's six pennant-winning teams in the 1960s (1966 ... Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Donald William Aase (born September 8, 1954, in Orange, California) is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played from 1977 to 1990 for the Boston Red Sox (1977), California Angels (1978-84) and Baltimore Orioles (1985-88), of the American League. In the National League, he played for the New York Mets (1989) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1990). Aase was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the sixth round of the 1972 amateur draft. That summer he struggled with the Williamsport Red Sox, putting up an 0-10 record to go along with a 5.81 ERA. The following season he was with the Winter Haven Red Sox and led the Florida State League with 15 losses. However, he bounced back in 1974 with the Winston-Salem Red Sox, leading the Carolina League in wins, complete games, and shutouts, and was named the circuit's Pitcher of the Year. Before being brought up to the Boston Red Sox, Aase's final minor league team was the "PawSox," the Boston Red Sox Pawtucket, RI, team. Aase reached the majors when he joined the Red Sox rotation in July 1977. He won his first big league game against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 26 and then threw a shutout against the California Angels five days later. He added another shutout against the Toronto Blue Jays on September 5 and ended his rookie year with a 6-2 record and a 3.12 ERA in 13 starts (a 146 ERA+). Following his first season in the majors, Aase was traded to the California Angels for infielder Jerry Remy. He was primarily a starter in his first two and a half years with the team, notching 11 wins in 1978. In Game Three of the 1979 ALCS on October 5, 1979, Aase became the first member of the Ange...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=2669326 ... Read more

Product Description
"It's difficult to beat a good golf book, be it a good yarn or a picture book . . . The golf is spectacular, the course more so, the descriptions luminous."
--USA Today

"The untold story of golf's greatest money match, featuring Hogan and Nelson at Cypress Point, comes to life in . . . Mark Frost's gripping new book, The Match."
--Golf magazine

"Frost weaves an exceptional narrative . . . It's a gripping tale--as good as James Patterson, John Grisham, or any other contemporary novelist could create. And all true. The match comes down to the 18th hole, and you'll be the winner once you turn the last page."
--Met Golfer

"Frost masterfully puts the reader not just on the scene, but in the time, too, with terrific storytelling."
--The State (South Carolina)

"Frost captures an elusive magic in this improbable matchup and what it meant for those who played and witnessed it."
--Publishers Weekly

"The Match was a dream I never thought would come true. If I hadn't been there I wouldn't believe it myself, and if you know anything about sports or the game of golf, once you pick up this book you won't put it down. No one will ever see an event like this again. Fiction can't touch it."
--Ken Venturi

The year: 1956.Four decades have passed since Eddie Lowery came to fame as the ten-year-old caddie to U.S. Open Champion Francis Ouimet. Now a wealthy car dealer and avid supporter of amateur golf, Lowery has just made a bet with fellow millionaire George Coleman. Lowery claims that two of his employees, amateur golfers Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi, cannot be beaten in a best-ball match. Lowery challenges Coleman to bring any two golfers of his choice to the course at 10 a.m. the next day to settle the issue.

Coleman accepts the challenge and shows up with his own power team: Ben Hogan and Byron Nelson, the game's greatest living professionals, with fourteen major championships between them.

In Mark Frost's peerless hands, complete with the recollections of all the participants, the story of this immortal foursome and the game they played that day--legendarily known in golf circles as the greatest private match ever played--comes to life with powerful, emotional impact and edge-of-your-seat suspense. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Match
Unbelievable that I am an avid golfer and had never heard about this Match. And it was my first introduction to Harvie Ward - of course I knew the others.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best golf stories ever
If you like golf you must read this book, it's written in a superb manner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling
I adored this book.Managed to take a single practice round played six decades ago and turn it into a compelling story. I learned so much about the origins of golf and finished the book feeling the need to read a biography on Bing Crosby.

2-0 out of 5 stars No match for his earlier books
I loved Frost's "The Greatest Game Ever Played" and "Grand Slam," so I picked up "The Match" with anticipation. It was, though, quite disappointing. When I got to the end, I couldn't figure out for the life of me why this match marked the "day the game of golf changed forever."I thought the hole-by-hole reporting of the match was less than captivating. The histories of the four golfers were quite interesting, but the book makes almost no case for why this match really did change the game of golf.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Historical Event
As the author notes, this match could never take place today. Two of the greatest golfers of all time in a "practice round" with the two top amateurs of the day. Beyond giving solid histories on each player, and even the two business men who concocted this event, Frost really excells at painting descriptions of the match -- hole by hole, shot by shot. Not only does he place the reader at the match with his portrayal of how it unfolded, but one can feel some level of the tension that must have engulfed the players and the building gallery at Cyprus that day. If you are a golf or sports fan of any type, you'll enjoy this one immensely. ... Read more

Durant les dernières années de sa vie, Kurt Cobain a lutté contre son addiction à l'héroïne ainsi que la pression des médias qui les ont affectés, lui et sa femme Courtney Love. Excerpt:Appearances (Goals). National team caps and goals correct as of 5 March, 2010Edward "Eddie" Johnson (born March 31, 1984) is an American soccer player. He currently plays for Fulham of the Premier League. Johnson also plays for the United States national team. He represented the United States in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Johnson became one of the youngest players to sign with MLS, and was drafted by Dallas Burn as a Project-40 player in the second round of the 2001 MLS SuperDraft. In his first three years in the league, he did not get much playing time, and was very inconsistent when he did get on the field. Johnson scored just seven goals for Dallas in those seasons, while missing a lot of time with US youth national teams. In January 2005, S.L. Benfica offered what would have been an MLS-record $5 million transfer fee for Johnson, but Johnson and the league both rejected the offer. In May 2005, Johnson suffered an injury to the toes of his right foot that sidelined him until August of that year. After returning to MLS in August he scored only five goals during the season Johnson re-injured his toes in mid-September and was sidelined until January 2006. With Dallas in salary cap trouble, Johnson was traded to the Kansas City Wizards on February 14, 2006, for two allocations. In August 2006, MLS had reached an agreement with Spanish club Real Sociedad for a year-long loan but the plan fell through because the new ownership of the Wizards were not happy with sending Johnson. The loan would have made Johnson the first American outfield player and s...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1115761 ... Read more

Product Description
Everybody had thought the car-jacking led to the banker’s murder. Then he turns up in a photograph taken by his kidnappers. But if the banker is still alive, whose ashes are buried in his grave?
Reporter Eddie Bourque is back, chasing down a story that could make his career.
Eddie is a real maverick, stubborn as a mule, smart and intuitive—in fact, he has the requisite nose for news. And he’s lucky in getting the tip of a lifetime. It leads him to ask difficult questions and chase down unlikely leads—like his imprisoned brother, Henry Bourque, a man Eddie scarcely knows. Does Henry have a real clue or is he conning Eddie, not just about the banker but about whether he committed the double murder that sent him away for life?
Eddie’s hunt for answers takes him across the neighborhoods of his old industrial mill town, Lowell, Massachusetts—its past, its gritty, multicultural present, its power structures, its underbelly—and deep into his own family’s dark secrets. As Eddie and his new sister-in-law struggle to untangle the knots, they hear the echoes of a forgotten crime and find bodies blocking their path to truth.
Someone is killing Eddie’s new sources…. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Even better than the first!
As much as I enjoyed Arsenault's first book "Spked!,"this was even better as there wasn't a slow spot in it.Eddie is a wonderful protagonist, realistic, and introspective. He loves his coffee and cat, General VonKatz. There are interesting secondary characters in Detective Orr, brother Henry and his wife Bobbie. The book's sense of place, dialogue, suspense and pacing all contribute to capturing and keeping the reader turning the pages. If you've not yet read Arsenault, do.I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic journalistic thriller
Bank president Roger Lime was carjacked; later the coroner Dr. Crane identified the body using dental records. Now Roger Lime's picture is shown in the Second Voice, a weekly newspaper, very much alive and freelance journalist Eddie Bourque is covering the story.Eddie's brother Henry who participated in a bank robbery, took six million dollars in gold, killed two security guards, but was caught thirty years ago writes a letter to his little brother that contains a newspaper account on the Lime story and the message "I know who's doing this".

For the first time Eddie visits his brother in prison.Hank tells Eddie that in the accompanying picture to the Lime article is a table that he made and gave to his partner's "old lady".Hank's wife demands Eddie get her husband released because the only person who testified at the trial was Dr. Crane who slanted the case like many others for the prosecution. While Eddie tries to help, someone wants Eddie dead to keep him from learning the Lime truth.

Although Eddie has never seen his brother before his first visit to the prison, he soon realizes he has familial feelings for the man and if he is innocent, he wants him out of jail.He wants to get to know the man. After several attempts on his life he realizes that he has no idea who wants him dead or why but it has to be related to his newfound relationship with Hank.Speak ILL OF THE LIVING is a cleverly constructed mystery with so many people wanting thegold that Eddie doesn't know who he can trust.Mark Arsenault uses misinformation to create a fantastic journalistic thriller.
