Editorial Review

Product Description
In Works and Days, one of the two long poems that have come down to us from Hesiod, the poet writes of farming, morality, and what seems to be a very nasty quarrel with his brother Perses over their inheritance. In this book, Anthony T. Edwards extracts from the poem a picture of the social structure of Ascra, the hamlet in northern Greece where Hesiod lived, most likely during the seventh century b.c.e. Drawing on the evidence of trade, food storage, reciprocity, and the agricultural regime as Hesiod describes them in Works and Days, Edwards reveals Ascra as an autonomous village, outside the control of a polis, less stratified and integrated internally than what we observe even in Homer. In light of this reading, theconflict between Hesiod and Perses emerges as a dispute about the inviolability of the community's external boundary and the degree of interobligation among those within the village. Hesiod's Ascra directly counters the accepted view of Works and Days, which has Hesiod describing a peasant society subordinated to the economic and political control of an outside elite. Through his deft analysis, Edwards suggests a new understanding of both Works and Days and the social and economic organization of Hesiod's time and place. Illustrations: 1 b/w photograph, 2 maps ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not a how-to; not historical proof of healthiness
At first this book may seem like it is about the adult use of spanking, corporal punishment and flagellation but what it is really about is a look at how society views such behaviors. The problem with this approach is that the argument becomes tied up in questions of childhood abuse and institutional correction. While I was impressed with the variety and number of historical literature Anthony uses, he does not show why human beings today are interested in these topics. The evidence he cites is almost always historical, about children, or about comic pop cultural references in modern England. There is nothing in this book that says that adult spanking, CP or flagellation is indeed seen as a "vilified vice" because he does not look at that issue.Attempts to describe why people are interested in these activities have no grounding in current reallife practice only passages from historical lierature. This book really needs to be spun as an historical investigation instead of an attempt to make CP, spanking and flagellation between adults understandable.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Rational, Intelligent Analysis of an Emotive Topic
The first thing to tell you about this book is to tell you what it isn't. Firstly, this is NOT a work of erotic fiction. To be sure, this book includes many short excerpts from historical erotic texts, but they arealways used to back up the arguments of the author. Secondly, this book isNOT a clinical analysis of flagellation. The theories of Havelock Ellis,Krafft-Ebing and yes, Freud, are discussed in one brief chapter, but thework of psycho-analysts do not dominate this book.

Instead, this book isa rational, journalistic investigation into the human flagellatory impulse. It also sets itself apart from every other book on this subject by avoidingany knee-jerk prejudices and refusing to condemn "this filthyvice" outright. The author keeps an open mind, and seeks tounderstand, rather than to judge. "I do not regard the flagellatoryimpulse per se as disgusting" says Anthony. "[The] purpose ofthis book is to offer another, rather more benign, certainly broader, viewof flagellation." In pursuit of this aim, Anthony's approach is tobreak his book into three parts:

Part One tackles "this filthyvice" head on. Anything bad that has ever been said about flagellationis found here. Anthony briefly outlines the history of flagellation anddemonstrates why this topic is still taboo in mainstream society. AlthoughAnthony applauds the abolition of corporal punishment in schools, he makesa very convincing (and rational) case for "reasonable andjudicious" corporal punishment of children in the home. After a briefclinical chapter in which the author gives the nod to the theories ofEllis, he outlines the use of flagellation in modern and historicalliterature. Part one of "Thy Rod and Staff" is an illuminatingand enlightening read.

In Part Two, Anthony tackles the major issue -erotic flagellation. Here, the author gets down to the specifics of whatflagellants actually do. The various male and female "dominant"personas (The No Nonsense Lover, The Governess), the scenarios in whichthey operate, the implements and costumes they use - and how all of theabove combine to make up a flagellatory encounter, are discussed. If youare so inclined, yes, you will find the various erotic excerpts heresexually arousing. This excellent part of the book is full of hints forthose couples who wish to indulge in flagellatory practices. Far from beingan act of giving and receiving pain, Anthony demonstrates that in reality, erotic flagellation is a form of love.

Finally, Part Three attempts toset the deeds of flagellants against society as a whole. Anthony argueshere that we are all being fed a diet of sadistic material by our massmedia, and despite the fact that mainstream society is, in many ways"sadomasochistic," flagellants will continue to remain one of thescapegoats for western society's ills. Anthony rightly considers this atragedy, especially when you consider that "What flagellants actuallydo is easily enough stated: they smack each other's bottoms."

Myonly criticism of this book is the occasionally gaseous prose. Anthony'sbook employs some grandiose terminology here and there, but fortunately, itdoes not detract from the central message in his writing.

This book alsocomes with an extensive bibliography of flagellatory sources, as well asfootnotes. There are also a collection of well chosen illustrations whichdocument the use of flagellation throughout history. Taken as a whole, thisis a learned, rational and humane book. It is essential reading foreveryone with a serious interest in this topic. One can only hope thatAnthony's plea for tolerance is taken up by other authors. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
The last five years have been marked by rapid technological and analytical developments in the study of shore processes and in the comprehension of shore deposits and forms, and shoreline change over time. These developments have generated a considerable body of literature in a wide range of professional journals, thus illustrating the cross-disciplinary nature of shore processes and the palaeo-environmental dimension of shore change. The justification of the book lies in bringing together these developments using an objective approach that synthesises current advances, technical progress in the analysis of shores and shore processes, contradictory interpretations, and potential advances using future-generation developments in techniques. The book provides a comprehensive state-of-the-art presentation of shore processes and deposits across ranges of wave energy and tide-range environments, sediment supply and textural conditions, sea-level change, exceptional events and longer-term climate change, based on the most recently published literature in the marine sciences. The book insists on the nested time and spatial scales through which are inter-linked shore processes and deposits, thus providing a better understanding of the way shores change over time. The approach is thus cross-disciplinary, and gap-bridging between processes and deposits, between analytical techniques, and between timescales. The audience is from graduate level upwards, and the book is intended as a comprehensive reference source for professionals in a wide range of coastal science fields (geologists, sedimentologists, geomorphologists, oceanographers, engineers, managers, archaeologists.).

Product Description
First published in 1987, this book examines the numerous interacting physical, chemical and biological processes which regulate the acidity of freshwaters. Natural acidification processes are considered first, the the effects of acidifying pollutant inputs from the atmosphere and of other human activities. The relative importance of the different processes is critically examined. Concepts incorporated are drawn from chemistry, physics, geology, hydrology, plant science and forestry, soil science, microbiology and meteorology. The authors have attempted to thread the relevant information together to make a coherent story which should be understandable and useful to readers from a number of disciplines: undergraduates and postgraduates studying environmental science, ecology, water quality and hydrogeochemistry; politicians and managers concerned with pollution control. Indeed, most of the text should be understandable to well-informed non-scientists who want (or need) a better grasp of this fascinating and important topic. ... Read more

Product Description
Edward II presided over a turbulent and politically charged period ofEnglish history, but to date he has been relatively neglected in comparison to other fourteenth and fifteenth-century kings. This book offers a significant re-appraisal of a much maligned monarch and his historical importance, making use of the latest empirical research and revisionist theories, and concentrating on people and personalities, perceptions and expectations, rather than dry constitutional analysis. Papers consider both the institutional and the personal facets of Edward II's life and rule: his sexual reputation, the royal court, the role of the king's household knights, the nature of law and parliament in the reign, and England's relations with Ireland and Europe. Contributors: J. S. HAMILTON, W. M. ORMROD, IAN MORTIMER, MICHAEL PRESTWICH, ALISTAIR TEBBIT, W. R. CHILDS, PAUL DRYBURGH, ANTHONY MUSSON, GWILYM DODD, ALISON MARSHALL, MARTYN LAWRENCE, SEYMOUR PHILLIPS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pricey but well worth it for those interested in Edward II
This is a fascinating collection of papers on the reign of Edward II. I especially liked the sections by Hamilton about Edward II's letters as prince, by Prestwich about Edward II's household, by Lawrence about Hugh le Despenser the elder, and by Phillips about "The Place of the Reign of Edward II." Well worth a read for those doing research in this period and for those strongly interested in Edward II. ... Read more
