From the supplier: Egoyan's venture into chamber opera met a disastrous fate. The opera 'Elsewhereless' featured at Festival Canada met lackluster response from audiences and critics alike. The inappropriate staging and dissonant music were blamed for the poor production.

Excerpt: Where the Truth Lies is a 2005 Canadian/British drama film written and directed by Atom Egoyan. It stars Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth and Alison Lohman and is based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Rupert Holmes. The film alternates between 1957, when Martin & Lewis-like comedy team Lanny Morris and Vince Collins are at the height of their success, and 1972, when journalist Karen O'Connor is determined to unravel the mystery of a young woman found dead in their hotel suite. Immediately after hosting a 39-hour-long polio telethon in a Miami television studio, Morris and Collins fly north to discuss opening the showroom of a new Las Vegas hotel run by mobster Sally Sanmarco. In their Atlantic City hotel suite, the body of college student Maureen O'Flaherty is found in a bathtub, but since both men were en route to the hotel at the time she was murdered, neither is connected to the crime. Shortly after, their partnership is dissolved. Fifteen years later, Karen -- who as a young polio survivor met the team at the telethon -- accepts a $1-million deal to ghostwrite Vince's autobiography. The project is complicated by the fact she keeps receiving anonymously sent chapters from a book about the one-time duo that Lanny himself has written. Karen first meets Lanny, accompanied by his faithful valet Reuben, on a transcontinental flight, during which she introduces herself as Bonnie Trout, the name of the best friend with whom she's trading apartments. The two meet for dinner at a Chinese restaurant and later become intimate in Lanny's hotel. Using her...http://booksllc.net/?id=2645237 ... Read more

Excerpt: Yousuf Karsh, CC (December 23, 1908 July 13, 2002) was a Canadian photographer of Armenian heritage, and one of the most famous and accomplished portrait photographers of all time. Yousuf or Josuf (his given Armenian name was Hovsep) Karsh was born in Mardin, a city in the eastern Ottoman Empire (present Turkey). He grew up during the Armenian Genocide where he wrote, "I saw relatives massacred; my sister died of starvation as we were driven from village to village." At the age of 14, he fled with his family to Syria to escape persecution. Two years later, his parents sent Yousuf to live with his uncle George Nakash, a photographer in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. Karsh briefly attended school there and assisted in his uncles studio. Nakash saw great potential in his nephew and in 1928 arranged for Karsh to apprentice with portrait photographer John Garo in Boston, Massachusetts, United States. Excerpt: Sergei Parajanov (Armenian: , Sargis Hovsepi Parajanyan; Georgian: ; Ukrainian: , Serhiy Yosypovych Paradzhanov; Russian: , Sergey Iosifovich Paradzhanov; also spelled Paradzhanov or Paradjanov) (January 9, 1924 July 20, 1990) was a Soviet Armenian film director and artist. He invented his own cinematic style. As it was highly unfit with the principal rules of socialist realism (the only sanctioned art style in the USSR) and his controversial stance and escapades to boot, cinema authorities regularly denied him permission to make films. Although he started professional film-making in 1954, Parajanov later disowned all of his pre-1964 works as "garbage". After directing Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (renamed Wild Horses of Fire for most foreign distributions) Parajanov had become something of an international celebrity and simultaneously a target of attacks from the system. Nearly all of his film projects and plans from 1965-1973 got banned, scrapped or closed by the Soviet fil...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=841521 ... Read more

Excerpt:Atom Egoyan Atom Egoyan , OC (Armenian : ; born July 19, 1960) is a critically acclaimed Canadian independent film maker. His work often explores themes of alienation and isolation , featuring characters whose interactions are mediated through technology, bureaucracy or other power structures. Egoyan's films often follow non-linear plot-structures, in which events are placed out of sequence in order to elicit specific emotional reactions from the audience by withholding key information. In 2008 he received the Dan David Prize for "Creative Rendering of the Past". Life and career Egoyan was born Atom Yeghoyan in Cairo , Egypt , the son of Shushan (née Devletian) and Joseph Yeghoyan, artists who operated a furniture store. His parents were Armenian -Egyptians, and he was named Atom to mark the completion of Egypt's first nuclear reactor. In 1962, however, his parents left Egypt for Canada, where they settled in Victoria, British Columbia , and changed their last name to Egoyan. Atom and his sister, Eve, now a concert pianist based in Toronto, were raised by their parents in British Columbia . As a boy, Atom's desire for assimilation into Canadian society and his struggle with his father led him to reject his family's Armenian culture. However, years later, when he attended the University of Toronto, he began to study Armenian history. As a teenager, he became interested in reading and writing plays. Significant influences included Samuel Beckett and Harold... ... Read more
