Product Description

ONE...TWO...FREDDY'S COMING FOR YOU....

You've seen him in the A Nightmare on Elm Street series -- and in your darkest dreams. The sadistic killer with the flame-charred face. The knife-blade claws. The razor-sharp wit. Freddy...But you've never seen him like this. Unflinching. Uncensored. Unmasked.

Meet Robert Englund, the award-winning actor best known for his role as Freddy Krueger -- the legendary horror icon featured on the American Film Institute's "100 Greatest Heroes and Villains" roster -- a character as unforgettable and enduring as Bela Lugosi's Dracula and Boris Karloff's Frankenstein. Now, for the first time, the man behind the latex mask tells his story in this captivating new memoir, published to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of the first A Nightmare on Elm Street film.

You see, Robert Englund is no monster at all, but a deeply funny, charming Hollywood veteran. Packed with Robert's hilarious stories, playful self-deprecation, and a generous helping of never-before-revealed A Nightmare on Elm Street trivia, Hollywood Monster offers an unparalleled look at the beloved film icon. With insider savvy and gallows humor, Robert recounts his audition for Wes Craven, the inspiration for Freddy's character, the grueling makeup sessions, his soon-to-be-famous costars, the often disastrous on-set blunders, and the wave of popularity that propelled this humble California surfer kid all the way to the top.

Of course, fame and fortune as Freddy came years after the young actor shared a trailer with screen legend Henry Fonda, was punched in the face by Richard Gere, took down Burt Reynolds, and muscled his way between Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sally Field, and Jeff Bridges.

But soon after his high-profile stint in the groundbreaking TV miniseries V, Robert Englund took on the most celebrated role of his career -- the macabre and wisecracking killer who quickly became a household name. From the moment Freddy Krueger dragged his claws across a rusty pipe in the opening dream sequence, a legend had been unleashed -- and a star was born. This is his story.

"Welcome to prime time, bitch."
-- Frederick Charles Krueger, bastard son of a hundred maniacs

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but brief
This book is a very quick read. There is not as much information as I hoped. If you are looking for revealing information about the Nightmare on Elm Street movies you would enjoy the DVD documentary Never Sleep Again much more. This is an interesting book but is brief.

4-0 out of 5 stars Such a fun book to read
I LOVED this book! I'm a huge nightmare/robert englund fan so I just knew I had to have this book. I was so interested in learning about everything that Robert has experienced throughout his life. His stories about frightening people on and off set of the nightmare movies are hilarious. I also loved how before each chapter, he talked about a nightmare he's had. This is just a fantastic book for anyone wanting to know more about the real freddy krueger. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I finished it in about 5 hours and I was so upset when I finished it. I just wanted to keep reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hollywood monester's wonderful!
Robert Englund is always a pleasure to watch on camera, but turns out he's wonderful in print to! this book is surprising, but majorly captivating. my only complaint is i would like to hear more in depth about the freddy role. over all great book, if ou love Robert Englund you'll love his book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
This would be a fantastic biography if it felt like it were written by the actor, instead you get 250 odd rambling anecdotes jotted down seemingly by a fan, which ultimately portrays the facts as whitewashed and Mr. Englund as obtuse. In terms of entertainment industry biographies it's not criminal fabrication such as Robert Evans' The Kid Stays In The Picture but in no way is it the caliber of Bruce Campbell's If Chins Could Kill or even Doug Bradley's meditation on transformative acting Sacred Monsters (Behind The Mask Of The Horror Actor). Great moments in Englund's life such as the argument with his father that caused him to leave home, or discovering Freddy Krueger's core value, or the first kiss with his second wife are spoken of glibly. The nine years of his life between Mangler and Freddy VS Jason aren't even mentioned and both events and people seem to fade in and out of the narrative. It's unfortunate that he was only approached to write a biography when the twenty fifth anniversary of A Nightmare On Elm Street loomed because he's a fantastic actor and deserving of an infinitely more fleshed out and candid biography.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great read.
I finished it in one sitting, but that's mainly because I couldn't put it down.I love Robert Englund and I had a great time remembering the '80s and '90s as he recounts filming the Nightmare movies.I also learned a few things I didn't know but should've: Englund directed 976-EVIL?I love that movie, but didn't know that.Nostalgic fans are in for a treat with this book. ... Product Description
Archaic Bookkeeping brings together the most current scholarship on the earliest true writing system in human history.Invented by the Babylonians at the end of the fourth millennium B.C., this script, called proto-cuneiform, survives in the form of clay tablets that have until now posed formidable barriers to interpretation. Many tablets, excavated in fragments from ancient dump sites, lack a clear context. In addition, the purpose of the earliest tablets was not to record language but to monitor the administration of local economies by means of a numerical system.

Using the latest philological research and new methods of computer analysis, the authors have for the first time deciphered much of the numerical information. In reconstructing both the social context and the function of the notation, they consider how the development of our earliest written records affected patterns of thought, the concept of number, and the administration of household economies.Complete with computer-generated graphics keyed to the discussion and reproductions of all documents referred to in the text, Archaic Bookkeeping will interest specialists in Near Eastern civilizations, ancient history, the history of science and mathematics, and cognitive psychology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Narrowly focused but excellent
"Archaic Bookkeeping" is an edited translation of the catalog that accompanied the sale of 82 proto-cuneiform tablets from the Swiss Erlenmeyer collection by Christie's in 1988 in London. These tablets hadbeen purchased in late 1950s, but had not been subjected to any detailedstudy.Personally I am not opposed to individual ownership of antiquities, but I do believe that preventing these valuable texts from being studied byscholars for decades is inexcusable. The tablets analyzed are mainly fromUruk, and date to the Archaic period in Sumerian history, circa 3000 BC.

The casual observer might think that the study of ancient cultures mightbe a field without much in the way of rapid change, but this would befalse. The advent of powerful computer programs have recently allowed theprocessing of large amounts non-numerical data and graphic information.Aresearcher is therefore able to instantly access an entire body of textwhen testing an hypothesis. The authors of "Archaic Bookkeeping"made use of this powerful technique, which is becoming more useful all thetime. This is made clear by the fact that as of 1993 (the date"Archaic Bookkeeping" was published), only 600 of the 5000archaic tablets from Uruk had been sufficiently published.

I am aninterested student of Sumerology, and my purchase of this book was anattempt not so much to understand archaic bookkeeping but to see examplesof the actual translation process, and, to the degree that I could, followalong. There is currently very little of this sort of material availablefor the interested amateur. In general it seems that this information isboth too difficult to have much amateur appeal, and too rudimentary forspecialists in the field. For those looking for a good introduction toSumeria, I highly recommend "The Sumerians" by Samuel Kramer.

Ifound the prose in this book to be very clear and well-constructed, with notrace of the fact that it had been translated from German.I found itsurprisingly free of philological and linguist jargon; its main purpose wasthe practical communication of how the authors used the tablets to extractinformation about Sumerian field administration, labor organization, andanimal husbandry. The book's area of focus is quite narrow, but it needsto be to cover the subject fairly.I found the tablet photographs anddiagrams to be a highlight of the book and uniformly excellent.Thebibliography was arranged by chapter and was very useful. ... Product Description

This comprehensive study of the Proto-Elamite language (ca. 3000 B.C.) is based on a small archive recovered from the site of Tepe Yahya in southeastern Iran. The authors, two of the leading specialists on the most ancient written texts of the Near East, illuminate the structure of the texts, the numerical sign systems used, and the relation of Proto-Elamite to other protocuneiform writing systems. A computer-generated sign list compares the written archive from Tepe Yahya with those of other archaeological sites from which Proto-Elamite texts have been recovered.

The volume offers a new understanding of the language and culture of the Proto-Elamites as well as important insights into the economic structure of the earliest literate civilizations. With a new preface by the authors.

Product Description
Creating the Project Office is written for managers who are searching for ways to transform their organizations into more effective and efficient project-based workplaces. As this important book reveals, there is no more effective way to make that change than to create a project office tailored to the needs of the organization. While a project office model leads to better products from projects, it is also a vehicle for generating overall organizational change— by transforming the organization from function-based to project-based. This model incorporates projects into the very fabric of the organizational strategy and revitalizes organizations, creates competitive advantage, and increases shareholder value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide for PMO builders
Hello,

I have read about 50% of the book and it's helping me a lot with the building of the PMO in my site.

It helps you on how to face this process focusing on the intagibles, not on the process.

3-0 out of 5 stars PMO and change management
You can feel the great experience the three authors have on this topic! They focus on the how (change management within the organization) rather than the what (scope of PMO functions).
I found the following particularly interesting: the Project Environment Assessment Tool and the L²M² model for change management.
Unfortunately, I could not implement any of the ideas in the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't have metric for start the PMO
I belive, if the book would have metrics and templates for the process start, it is very usefull.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating the Project Office : A Manager's Guide to Leading Organizational Change
Excellent service

5-0 out of 5 stars Common sense applied to change management, wrapped in a bow!
I purchased this book on recommendation from a previous reviewer and was amazed by the breadth, depth, and more importantly pace of the book. The book moves quickly and does not spend a lot of time on theory, more time on examples (drawn mainly from Englund's work at HP).

The high level process applies as a general change management agenda, but applied through the lense of a PMO or project office. The annecdotes and lessons learnt provide an excellent framework for either internal "change agents" or external consultants to structure a successful organizational change and increase in proejct delivery quality.

The examples and frameworks in the book are easily understood and presented in a way that they can be reused or applied to many different project management challenges. I highly recommend this book to program managers or IT consultants who are intereste in affecting change in any organization. ... Read more

Read more

Excerpt: Earl William "Madman" Muntz (January 3, 1914 June 21, 1987) was an American businessman and engineer who sold and promoted cars and consumer electronics in the United States from the 1930s until his death in 1987. He was a pioneer in television commercials with his oddball "Madman" persona an alter ego who generated publicity with his unusual costumes, stunts, and outrageous claims. Muntz also pioneered car stereos by creating the Muntz Stereo-Pak, better known as the 4-track cartridge, a predecessor to the 8-track cartridge developed by Lear Industries. He invented the practice that came to be known as Muntzing, which involved simplifying otherwise complicated electronic devices. Muntz produced and marketed the first black-and-white television receivers to sell for less than $100, and created one of the earliest functional widescreen projection TVs. He was credited with coining the abbreviation "TV" for television, although the term had earlier been in use in call letters for stations such as WCBS-TV. A high school dropout, Muntz made fortunes by selling automobiles, TV receivers, and car stereos and tapes. A 1...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=553588 ... Read more
