4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Addition to Your Training Materials Library...
While this book may not have as many techniques as some other books on groundfighting out there, it is nonetheless a good book, and a great manual for someone who is trying learn the basics. The material is well written and has very illustrative pictures that together make it a great tool for learning.

My copy is already starting to get dog-eared from use...

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Well Done Basic Guide to Basic Jiu-Jitsu Techniques
I was pleasantly surprised at how well done this book actually was. The author did an outstanding job at covering a lot of the basic jiu-jitsu techniques in a very well thought out and easy to understand manner. This book was never intended to be a highly detailed examination of any particular technique, but more of a basic guide to the basic techniques that one would most often learn when first starting to learn the martial art of jiu-jitsu.

Now I will admit that I felt there should have been a bit more detailed text to go along with the exceptionally well done photographs, but when I remembered that this was meant to be a basic guide, I understood why the detailed explanations of the techniques were missing.

This may not be your first choice for a jiu-jitsu book to learn from if you already have an extensive background in the art, but if you are a beginner or someone who would just like to check things out and see what jiu-jitsu is all about, then this may very well be the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely one of the best BJJ book I own.
I bought both the basic and advanced books and the techniques represented actually work!I train at a Relson Gracie Academy and Fabio's techniques are simply easy to follow and effective. He presents self defense and competitive BJJ techniques. My instructor is very harsh on most BJJ books but approves of Fabio's techniques.Again, you will not find flying arm bars or flying triangles in these books. What you will find are solid core BJJ techniques that were developed and taught by the Gracie Family.I believe Fabio has trained with both Rolls and Rickson. It's also cool to see Marcelo Garcia in the advanced book with Fabio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabio Gurgel is an eight-time martial arts world champion
Fabio Gurgel is an eight-time martial arts world champion and co-founder of more than forty academies around the world. He is president of the Professional League of Jiu-Jitsu which is based in Brazil and continues to teach at his own academy in Sao Paulo. Fabio therefore writes with a very special expertise in "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Basic Techniques", a superbly organized and presented, step-by-step, illustrated introduction to a very special and effective form of the martial arts. Fabio begins with a brief history of jiu-jitsu, a martial art that originated in India more than 4,000 years ago as a self-defense technique employed by monks. Ideal for the absolute novice, "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Basic Techniques" is a confidently recommended instruction manual. Also very highly recommended is the companion book by Fabio Gurgel and also published by Blue Snake Books, "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Advanced Techniques (97815893941669, $19.95) which goes on to instruct the reader in additional self-defense techniques including passing the guard, sweeps, side attacks, mounted attacks, rear attacks, guard attacks, mounted escapes, and throws. Together, both volumes of "Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" comprise a complete and comprehensive course of do-it-yourself instruction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Fighter, bad author
This is by far the worst BJJ book I have ever read.Fabio should just stick to competing.I was so let down by this product that I returned it.The photos were awful and the text may as well have been in Portugese. ... Read more

Product Description

Who among us hasn’t marveled at the diversity and beauty of shells? Or picked one up, held it to our ear, and then gazed in wonder at its shape and hue? Many a lifelong shell collector has cut teeth (and toes) on the beaches of the Jersey Shore, the Outer Banks, or the coasts of Sanibel Island. Some have even dived to the depths of the ocean. But most of us are not familiar with the biological origin of shells, their role in explaining evolutionary history, and the incredible variety of forms in which they come.

Shells are the external skeletons of mollusks, an ancient and diverse phylum of invertebrates that are in the earliest fossil record of multicellular life over 500 million years ago. There are over 100,000 kinds of recorded mollusks, and some estimate that there are over a million more that have yet to be discovered. Some breathe air, others live in fresh water, but most live in the ocean. They range in size from a grain of sand to a beach ball and in weight from a few grams to several hundred pounds. And in this lavishly illustrated volume, they finally get their full due.

The Book of Shells
offers a visually stunning and scientifically engaging guide to six hundred of the most intriguing mollusk shells, each chosen to convey the range of shapes and sizes that occur across a range of species. Each shell is reproduced here at its actual size, in full color, and is accompanied by an explanation of the shell’s range, distribution, abundance, habitat, and operculum—the piece that protects the mollusk when it’s in the shell. Brief scientific and historical accounts of each shell and related species include fun-filled facts and anecdotes that broaden its portrait.

The Matchless Cone, for instance, or Conus cedonulli, was one of the rarest shells collected during the eighteenth century. So much so, in fact, that a specimen in 1796 was sold for more than six times as much as a painting by Vermeer at the same auction. But since the advent of scuba diving, this shell has become far more accessible to collectors—though not without certain risks. Some species of Conus produce venom that has caused more than thirty known human deaths.

The Zebra Nerite, the Heart Cockle, the Indian Babylon, the Junonia, the Atlantic Thorny Oyster—shells from habitats spanning the poles and the tropics, from the highest mountains to the ocean’s deepest recesses, are all on display in this definitive work.

4-0 out of 5 stars a good guide
I first read about this book in the New York Times. It had good reviews and from the Times recommendation, I bought it. It is not the best of books for shell identification. Abbott's "Compendium of Seashells", is so far the best for identification. As a collector, naming the shells that you see or have is a great pleasure.
This book still lacks the comprehensiveness of Abbott's, but it is fair enough. Compared to most other books, which are just art photographs, this one combines beautiful photography with enough entries to place your specimen.
One wishes that there are more entries, but it is heavy enough. For the more advanced collector, it is sufficient.
A point in its favor, that Abbott's doesn't have, is its "actual size" posting.
For the professional collector, one has to go to regional books of shells of the regions. Alan Hinton's books of shells of the Australian and Papua New Guinea, and Fely Leobrera's "Shells of the Philippines", are very good in connecting one's knowledge about very common and rare shells. And for those who are starting, "Fields Guide to Shells" is the best.

Product Description
Unlike most other martial arts, jiu-jitsu involves no spectacular throws and kicks and no ceremonial bows. Unlike boxing, it has no punching. And unlike virtually every other fighting technique, it does not rely on brute strength. Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a form of self-defense that takes place almost entirely on the ground although its falling techniques from a standing position are a distinctive mark among competitors. Fighters use snakelike grappling moves to choke their opponent, or, with the weight of their entire body, they press against key joints, bringing them close to the breaking point.

This practical guide builds on its predecessor Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Basic Techniques, offering specific intermediate and advanced instruction as well as illuminating historical context. Acclaimed author Fabio Gurgel explains the discipline’s origins with the ancient Samurai; its seminal place as the father of the major Japanese martial arts, including judo and aikido, as well as its influence on karate. Gurgel describes the mental techniques of jiu-jitsu that have made him one of the sport’s superstars, teaching how to achieve self-confidence, self-esteem, stress relief, and an increased ability to focus. Written in a clear, accessible style and incorporating a wealth of black-and-white photographs, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Advanced Techniques offers world-class training to help readers realize their ultimate potential in this popular art. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Price...
Like the author's first book, it is a fairly simple to use, straightforward and overall good piece of work on this subject. While it may not be as flashy or comprehensive as some other books, it does serve as a good tool for those trying to learn these techniquies.

I would say that you can't go wrong adding it to your library.

Product Description

Named a Best New Chef in America by Food & Wine and Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic by the James Beard Foundation, rising star Fabio Trabocchi offers a unique take on his native cuisine, that of the until-now-overlooked Le Marche region of Italy.

Every chef is a product of a place and a tradition. Fabio Trabocchi's soul is in the Italian province of Le Marche. Equidistant from Rome and Florence, Le Marche is on the Adriatic coast, bordered to the north by Emilia-Romagna, to the west by Tuscany and Umbria, and to the south by Lazio and Abruzzo. This geography accounts for the rich variety of Le Marche's food traditions. The first chefs of Le Marche assimilated recipes, ingredients, and techniques from visiting mariners from Greece and North Africa. In his debut cookbook, Trabocchi showcases his signature style of cooking—called "soulful and passionate—not pretentious" by Food & Wine—combining traditional elements of Italian cuisine with a contemporary European sensibility that draws on the many flavors he's experienced throughout his extensive travels and techniques honed at restaurants around the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Authentic and terrific recipe selections!
The well-chosen recipes in this book get directly to the essence of Le Marche cuisine. My only regret is that there aren't a few more recipes included! These are the dishes I grew up with and the same ones I enjoy when I am in Le Marche visiting relatives. It's a great book for the cognoscenti!

2-0 out of 5 stars Good read, not so good recipes
Really my title says it all. I enjoyed reading this book and it is well written and filled with good prose and stories of Le Marche and the chef's upbringing. Unfortunately, the recipes I've tried have not worked as expected. It makes me think that the recipes were not well tested and not much care went into putting them together. If you want a cookbook to cook from, this might work, but be prepared to improvise (too much rice in the rice spinach soup for example). On the other hand if you want a nice little regional take on Italian food through the eyes of a prominent chef, then get a copy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cookbook with anecdotes
Since my husband is from Marche, I enjoyed reading this cookbook with the side descriptions of life in the province. Some of the recipes would be difficult to make here due to ingredients, but there are some Marche favorites that are delicious.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Solid Book for the Serious Cook of Regional Italian Food
This book is based in large part upon the story of the Familia Trabocci,
That story gives the reader/cook some real insight into the spirit of the food which is made with the excellent recipes. This is not really a cookbook for the beginner because, although it has very fine illustrations of dishes on the table, there are few procedural illustrations and many of the regional ingredients may be difficlt to obtain. It is a fine book of the cooking and customs of a region of Italy. Buy it and read it, you will enjoy it! You should also try to reproduce the cooking through some of the recipes in the spirit of the region.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening
I love Fabio's cooking. It's Inspired and exploding with amazing flavor. Fof over a year and a half worling in Maestro, I didn't always understood where the genious came from. This book has allowed me to understand a lot about him.

The recipes in the book are not your typical italian fare, it's a rustic, culinary treasure from a relatively undiscovered region of Italy. Very recomendable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This is great sexy summer reading
This is the 1st Fabio book I read where I love the leading lady and the leading man, I wasn't able to put the book down. It's very sexy and it never dragged or seemed dull, it's smooth and the leads are well-developed.
So far, this is my absolute favorite.Fabio is at his best when he co-writes sexy novels. I think this is movie material.

Don't hold back on future books, there's a nitch for steamy sensual reading like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious fun for the Fabio fan
Okay, first off it's by Fabio. You can't even begin to think to take it seriously. Picture the "I can't believe it's not butter" model, smiling broadly in a puffy shirt, wind blowing in his face, describing the story to an actual romance author who's writing the book for him (yes, there's another name in the author slot with his).

Remember, it's Fabio. So use the appropriate accent. Say things like "I vant to be smarrrt. I vant to play chess on the beach." Its about pirates so remember, "Pirates go Arrr, Matey. but I am smart, so I just say Hello."

And yes, the pirates (he's obviously the pirate captain) get drunk on the beach and say "Harrrr" a lot. There is the actual super-sexy phrase of "Climb upon my mast and billow like a sail." in the book, which makes me laugh everytime I think about it. There are no surprise twists or turns. And there is a centerfold picture of the guy himself if you get the 1st ed paperback.

This book is a great laugh, fun, light and as complex and dizzyingly clever as the model himself.

Remember, It's Fabio!

3-0 out of 5 stars She was 18 not 12 When They Became A Couple!
First off I want to point off that Christina was only 12 year of age when she was rescued by Marco after he passed by in his ship and saw that the island she lived on was being invaded by pirates.

Christina was an orphan and her guardian sent her to that island fully knowing that it was frequently invaded by pirates hoping that she would get killed and then he would inherit her fortune.

Ignore reviewers who admit they only read the first page or only read Amazon's brief and incomplete discription for they wrongly think that Marco was having relations with Christina when she was 12.

Yes Marco took Christina to live on his own Caribbean island but he had a lover and didn't really pay much attention to Christina and he didn't really even like her too much and thought of her as an annoying pesty little kid and really let Christina do her own thing for years and nothing happened between Marco and Christina though she did try throwing herself at him only to be rejected by him until she was 18 years old and kind of seduced him and I think he was drunk at the time.

Like so many other reviewers I didn't like Christina but I actually liked Marco and even though I didn't like the heroine I actually liked this book and I recommend it but I think Fabio should have sent Christina off with the son of Marco's business aquaintence and given Marco a more stable girlfriend but I will rate this 3 stars for what I liked but no more than 3 stars!

1-0 out of 5 stars UGH!
I don't know if I should really write a review of this book, seeings how I didn't get past the 2nd chapter.I am a huge romance consumer, but I just could not past the fact that the writing was the worse I've every read to get to the story. And the fact that Marco was attracted to a 14 yr old girl turned me right off.Apart from that, it was still a horrible book.Good thing I bought if from my local library for $.50.It's almost worth that as a doorstopper.

1-0 out of 5 stars I agree with the reviewer that suggested this as kindling
One good thing about this book is that it holds many a laughs for someone with even minimal intelligence. And onto the "plot"!

You have your stereotypical beefcake named Marco, who, whenever described, holds a striking resemblence to the supposed author of this book.Marco is your average Italian pirate/womanizer who is his own boss and even the boss of a quaint pirate island somewhere in the Caribbean where prostitutes are welcome to visit and have children with Marco's crew.

Marco, on one of his escapades, comes across a rather dilapidated, almost-run-by-criminals island where he saves twelve-year-old Christina, who, upon first being introduced, doesn't appear half bad.Marco gallantly swoops her and her stereotypically annoying crone of a guardian, away to his island.Blah, blah, blah, six years pass.

Marco still is an irritating, virtually one-dimensional character who has to walk through doorways sideways because of his overbearing muscles (I particularly loved his episode with the mercenary-like cook and her constant want of a raise, and how he said something along the lines of "Woman! You try my temper!"), while Christina has turned into a spoiled brat.Of course, she's a voluptuous, golden-haired eighteen-year-old who is lusted after by every memeber of the crew, so all her moral short-comings are overlooked.I swear, I have never come across a ...character.And not even in the good sense of the word. There were numerous occasions where I wished I could jump into the book, punch her in the face and then laugh at her while she cried for Marco because her hair got mussed and her immaculately tiny nose was now less than perfect.

All in all, you have just about every stereotype imaginable. The steamy ... who thinks she can run the hero's life. The annoying child-turned-woman who thinks she owns the hero's life because of a frivolous promise, the ugly, bearded Spanish pirate rival, the heiress of an American colony company, and her jealous guardian who wants her dead so he can get the money.

I think the only likable character was the darn cheetah, who, in a Sigfried and Roy-esque manner, was a pet.And she is oh-so nicely name...Pansy.

Anyone who honestly enjoyed this book needs their head examined.I got it as a gag gift, and I couldn't even get through it all, and ended skipping parts. ... Read more

Product Description

On May 4, 1919, thousands of students protested the Versailles treaty in Beijing. Seventy years later, another generation demonstrated in Tiananmen Square. Climbing the Monument of the People's Heroes, these protestors stood against a relief of their predecessors, merging with their own mythology while consciously deploying their activism. Through an investigation of twentieth-century Chinese student protest, Fabio Lanza considers the marriage of the cultural and the political, the intellectual and the quotidian, that occurred during the May Fourth movement, along with its rearticulation in subsequent protest. He ultimately explores the political category of the "student" and its making in the twentieth century.

Lanza returns to the May Fourth period (1917-1923) and the rise of student activism in and around Beijing University. He revisits reform in pedagogical and learning routines, changes in daily campus life, the fluid relationship between the city and its residents, and the actions of allegedly cultural student organizations. Through a careful analysis of everyday life and urban space, Lanza radically reconceptualizes the emergence of political subjectivities (categories such as "worker," "activist," and "student") and how they anchor and inform political action. He accounts for the elements that drew students to Tiananmen and the formation of the student as an enduring political category. His research underscores how, during a time of crisis, the lived realities of university and student became unsettled in Beijing, and how political militancy in China arose only when the boundaries of identification were challenged.

Product Description

The last twenty years have witnessed tremendous advances in the mathematical, statistical, and computational tools available to applied macroeconomists. This rapidly evolving field has redefined how researchers test models and validate theories. Yet until now there has been no textbook that unites the latest methods and bridges the divide between theoretical and applied work.

Fabio Canova brings together dynamic equilibrium theory, data analysis, and advanced econometric and computational methods to provide the first comprehensive set of techniques for use by academic economists as well as professional macroeconomists in banking and finance, industry, and government. This graduate-level textbook is for readers knowledgeable in modern macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and computational programming using RATS, MATLAB, or Gauss. Inevitably a modern treatment of such a complex topic requires a quantitative perspective, a solid dynamic theory background, and the development of empirical and numerical methods--which is where Canova's book differs from typical graduate textbooks in macroeconomics and econometrics. Rather than list a series of estimators and their properties, Canova starts from a class of DSGE models, finds an approximate linear representation for the decision rules, and describes methods needed to estimate their parameters, examining their fit to the data. The book is complete with numerous examples and exercises.

Today's economic analysts need a strong foundation in both theory and application. Methods for Applied Macroeconomic Research offers the essential tools for the next generation of macroeconomists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great buy
Fabio here in the book has a sense of humor - very cool, i say the man has alot of common sense. He and the writing partner give excellent advice and important information that even some facts i have not heard of in todays information society.

5-0 out of 5 stars This needs to be brought back in print!
I'm a huge fan of Fabio, and this book has helped me enormously with not only my weight loss, but with getting fit. If anyone is qualified to give advice on this topic, it would obviously be Fabio. The results of his own fitness routine speak for itself. Along with some fascinating insights (I wasn't aware that Atkins-like diets might lead to brain damage before I read this book), this book tosses in some good recipes and just fine common sense advice on getting in shape. Love Fabio, love the book, and I wish it were back in print so more people could be exposed to the great ideas inside.

3-0 out of 5 stars I love Fabio but does Fabio love me?

Sometimes I would get this feeling of incredible anticipation. I would feel like this would be the jackpot for which I have been waiting so long. My finger would hover over the "Add to Cart" button while I considered the possible outcome of what (to some people) might seem like a brash and reckless move.

Other times I would try to put the whole concept of "Fabio" out of my mind so that I could get some sleep. But the idea would creep back into my head. I would be laying there at 3:00 AM considering (for example), the merits of the various long-distance plans that I had been made aware of by several polite callers over the course of the previous couple of weeks, when I could feel Fabio looming at the fuzzy borders of my consciousness. I would try to fight him off but all of a sudden there it would be - the image of Fabio fully formed in my mind's eye - in all his dubious glory.

I talked the problem over with my psychiatrist. He was perplexed so he called two of his associates into the room to see if they could help make some sort of sense out of what I was telling him. All three of them are from Vienna. They all had cigars and they all happened to have long full beards. I told them of my dilemma - well my conundrum really - while the three of them sat in stony silence.

I noticed that they all stroked their beards in what I am sure (in hindsight) was a subtle system of beard-code that they had worked out for non-verbal communication in just this type of situation. I had just gotten to the part about the long-distance rates when one of them fainted! I learned later that fainting is a common self-defense mechanism the human body employs in order to stave off terrible psychological pain and trauma.

The others revived him and they retreated to a corner of the room to discuss my problem. They kept there voices low but I distinctly heard the fainter say "Crazy - just plain nuts"! His face was red and he seemed like he was angry and scared at the same time. The others calmed him and in about 20 minutes they decided on a course of action. After asking me if I wouldn't mind if they submitted this case for publication in a medical journal, my doctor said "Mr. Sprinkel it is, after all, just a few dollars. What is the worst that could happen? Be brave, take a chance. Buy Fabio and see if perhaps this will set your mind at ease".

That was 12 days ago. What he said made a lot of sense at the time and I can understand the finer points of his argument but I still have this nagging doubt. My finger is over the "Add to Cart" button and I think I have just about come to the point where I can start to make a rational decision about the pros and cons of this gambit. Yes, yes I am just about there. I'm just going to take another moment to consider it all then I will certainly make a decision...

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading
Enjoyable, passionate, with a leading man that rivals Clark Gable in Gone With The Wind, Ryder is strong, sexy, arrogant, confident, kind etc...mid-way through the book, I was wishing for a man like this myself!Though wordy at times, it's worth the read.Fabio needs to keep writing, I like the way that guy thinks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Passionate and Desirably romantic!
The character Ryder Remington is a prime example of a classical rogue! He's dashing, strong and annoyingly smooth! He is definitely a dream away from orgasmic!

4-0 out of 5 stars Okay, So It's Not A Masterpiece, But It's Still Enjoyable!
I had bought this audiobook together with Fabio's Pirate and I didn't think I would like Rogue because I was a little disappointed with Pirate because I didn't like the heroine but I listened to the Rogue audiobook anyway and I was very pleasantly surprised! I wouldn't call it a masterpiece of classic literature but it was good and I enjoyed it and I liked the characters Natalie and Ryder and I enjoyed reading about their adventures and their romance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
I beleave this book to be wonderful as well as sinful. I am only on Chapter ten so far. I wish Ryder Remington the main character of the book was a real person. I woun't mind if he looked under my frok. This book makes me sinful for reading it. Thank You, Fabio! Oh and the other person too!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste the money , honey!
This is one romance definitely not bound for Blockbuster! The characters were so unbelievable and the dialouge so poorly written it was hard to make it from page to page. The plot in itself was corny and I actually groanedaloud when introduced to the character Aunt LOVE!REALLY we are romanticnot ditsy. As usual, noone can deny Fabio's sex scenes were steamier thanever, but I'm not sure one can make it that far. Also, great sex scenescan hardly make up for bad plot. I love Fabio's pictures, I really do, buta reader worth their salt must agree that a great body on one page can'tmake up for 400 pages of a dull and flat book. For great historicalromance try Virginia Henley and the almost impossible to get RobertaGellis. For great contemporary romance keep in mind Susan ElizabethPhillips. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Laughable garbage
Let's not kid ourselves. This book was written by Eugenia Riley, not Fabio. If you want to learn anything about the Comanche or the tensions between whites and Native Americans, you'd do a lot better looking for it somewhere other than in the pages of a romance novel. Anyone who reads this sort of literature regularly knows the repetitive formula followed: man and woman meet, are attracted to each other but some obstacle keeps them apart. Lots of sexual tension develops, culminating in some erotic encounter. That's exactly what happens in this book. All this nonsesnse about feminism and racial identity are just window dressing. This is a book that most people are now throwing away. Really, what do you expect from a book that is selling for a PENNY? Do yourself a favor and read something better. It shouldn't be hard to find.

4-0 out of 5 stars above and beyond
Commanche is a great book for anyone who loves books that contain romance that rises above and beyond the restrants of prejudice and the classical veiws of society.Bronson Kane and Maggie Donovan, both learn from the other and find a mutal meeting ground. This captivating book is filled with a senseof realism that fills your heart. If your looking to take a journey in the form of two wonderful and fulfilling caractersI realy recommend you read this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Past the Robust Image You'll find Stimulating Subjects
Comanche is set in Texas in the mid-nineteenth century. This novel is classified as a Historical Romance. It follows the formulaic pattern of Romance novels. Yet, issues such as feminism and racial identity areembedded within the story. This novel might be dismissed as"sensationalist" or "escapist" literature because ofits literary classification. However, if you take the time to examine thisnovel's larger ideas and issues, you will find porvoking subject matterbeneath Comanche's gaudy and gilt cover.Comanche brings attention to theracial tension which has existed between the Native Americans and thecolonial invaders since the invasion of America by Europeans. Bronson Kaneis the embodiment of this conflict and Maggie is the projection of theEuropean's racist fears. Economic inequality between the white and NativeAmerican population can be related directly to the stereotypes and fearswhich still exist. The character of Bronson represents the conflictinherent in Native American citizens who historically needed to surrendertheir culture for the Europeans or be condemned as social deviants by thecolonialists. This dilemma has been discussed recently in such literaryworks as M. Scott Momaday's House Made of Dawn and Sherman Alexie's IndianKiller. However, the model of the half-breed has been used frequentlythroughout the history of literature as in Henry James' novel The PrincessCasa massima in which the delicate character of Hyacinth struggles with hisheritage of upper-class Britain and lower-class France. This conflict ofheritage which leads to an unsolvable conflict in the character of Hyacinthis a sharp contrast to that of Bronson who ultimately accepts his identitythrough the expression of love for Maggie. This represents a consolationbetween his identification with his white ancestors and his tribalcommunity, the Comanches. Fabio eludes to the struggle of identity throughBronson's pleas toward Maggie: "Are we really different? Does itmatter whether we find our destiny here in the wilderness, or back instuffy old Boston?" Through this, Fabio suggests a reconciliationbetween Native American and Europeans be abondoning our culturalstereotypes for the respect of the individual. This resolution ischaracterized in the novel by Bronson and Maggie's love.Perhaps insteadof limiting our perception of literature to such classifications as"classic" or "romance", we can look at every novel froman objective point of view and value its cultural meaning. The fact thatFabio, a cultural icon, wrote it negates the way in which it is percievedby reading audiences. His name carries a set a expectations with it and itis these expectations that we must suspend in order to look at the novelobjectively. Comanche is a novel that is meant to be enjoyed. It isentertaining. It is also a reflection of our physical, emotional, andsocial ideals. A single book can be enjoyed and values on multiple levels.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another fine contribution from the Master of Romance
Fabio has done it again with this solid new work of Romantic fiction. His characters are vigorous and robust, and he has honed his use of theEnglish language like a master craftsman.Thedialogue is crisp and original, and the lovescenes were graphic yet tasteful.Go Fabio! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Quirky noir
Think of all those Prohibition-era movies you ever saw, with rum-runners, turf wars, criminal empires, and the sweet and relatively innocent cigarette girls. Baldock turns the genre on its head. Here, alcohol takes a minor place and the shadow economy revolves around cigarettes - and the cigarette girls. They're the tough guys, they're in control. Except maybe Scarlett, who's totally out of control.

This B&W comic offers an exicting ride with a cross-town gun battle reminiscent of The Warriors. OK, the plot and characters aren't the most highly developed. Well, the lean, leggy babes are well developed, but that's not what I meant. You'll find plenty of excitement lightly seasoned with mild nudity. Sometimes I look for more in a comic, but this one's fun anyway.

Product Description

The black power movement helped redefine African Americans' identity and establish a new racial consciousness in the 1960s. As an influential political force, this movement in turn spawned the academic discipline known as Black Studies. Today there are more than a hundred Black Studies degree programs in the United States, many of them located in America's elite research institutions. In From Black Power to Black Studies, Fabio Rojas explores how this radical social movement evolved into a recognized academic discipline.

Rojas traces the evolution of Black Studies over more than three decades, beginning with its origins in black nationalist politics. His account includes the 1968 Third World Strike at San Francisco State College, the Ford Foundation's attempts to shape the field, and a description of Black Studies programs at various American universities. His statistical analyses of protest data illuminate how violent and nonviolent protests influenced the establishment of Black Studies programs. Integrating personal interviews and newly discovered archival material, Rojas documents how social activism can bring about organizational change.

Shedding light on the black power movement, Black Studies programs, and American higher education, this historical analysis reveals how radical politics are assimilated into the university system.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary insight from a knowledgeable author
You can tell this author has a passion about the sport, but for me this has translated and merged with the complex character of the subject of his book. The background and family history of this man, what makes him tick, what has made him successful and sought after by others before being appointed as the saviour of English football is brought to the reader in a way that doesn't simply report on yet another football personality.
This is probably labelled for a male readership, but I found it absorbing and not so technically written that it could not be picked up by female football fans too.A jolly good Christmas gift I'd say - well done Mark Ryan! ... Read more

Product Description
Set in the unexplored jungles of Central America in the mid-1800s, this true-life adventure story will enthrall the armchair archaeologist.

Recounted here for the first time is the adventurous life of Frederick Catherwood, the 19th-century English artist who discovered the lost Mayan cities in the jungles of Central America and the Yucatn plateau. In 1839 Catherwood and his American companion, John Lloyd Stephens, were the first Westerners to view the immense terraces, fabulous temples, and elaborate palaces that had been inexplicably abandoned ten centuries earlier. Superbly illustrated by Catherwood, Stephens' lively travel diaries recounting their extraordinary archaeological discoveries were published in 1841 and 1843.

Using these journals and his own extensive research, author Fabio Bourbon has pieced together Catherwood's fascinating biography, which until now has been shrouded in mystery. Illustrating this handsome large-format book are more than 200 engravings made from Catherwood's original drawings. Also reproduced is Catherwood's Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatna rare color portfolio considered to be his best work. Catherwood's other adventures are also describedhis first trips to Europe and Egypt, his later expeditions to Central America, and finally his experiences in California. This intriguing book about an intrepid adventurer/artist will appeal to anyone interested in exploration, architecture, and archaeology.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read!
The Lost Cities of the Mayas follows the life of Frederick Catherwood, the artist whose fabulous paintings of Maya cities and sculptures ignited interest in the Maya in Europe and the U.S.In addition to the interesting story, the reader gets to see many of the famous drawings and prints, all carefully reprinted in large format. Some of his drawings were so accurate that modern scholars can use them to read glyphs that have now become unreadable from exposure to the elements.

This is a good book for someone just learning about the Maya or for the seriously addicted Mayanist.

Fans of Stephens and Catherwood should very much enjoy this volume.Catherwood is neither featured - nor ignored - in Stephens' "Incidents of Travel in Yucatan" set - their travels together being the source of most of the included drawings. This book, however, focuses not only on Catherwood's intriguing artwork, but reveals a good deal about the life of the man himself.Especially considering the price, this book is not only a must for those interested in the Mayan civilization, but also for the story of one of the first white men to discover and document this great culture for the rest of the world.
