Product Description
In this book of writings by and about Fassbinder, revealing statements by the artist himself are published in English for the first time. In addition, film historian Thomas Elsaesser and Georgia Brown, film critic for New York City's Village Voice, provide a critical framework that is at once comprehensive and illuminating; and Frankfurt film critic Wolfram Schütte examines Fassbinder's place within postwar German film history. The volume also contains an illustrated filmography and recollections by colleagues and friends, including Fassbinder's editor, Juliane Lorenz, the actresses Hanna Schygulla and Jeanne Moreau, and fellow directors Wim Wenders and Volker Schlondorff.

Edited by Laurence Kardish and Juliane Lorenz.
Essays by Wim Wenders, Jeanne Moreau, Thomas Elsaesser, Georgia Brown, Wolfram Schütte, Harry Baer, Volker Schlöndorff and Hanna Schygulla.

Rainer Werner Dassbiner left behind him a literary and cinematic collection which will take a unique place in history of European film and in the culture of the twentieth century. It is a collection which evolved as the expression of an era, between 1966 and 1982, in a country which was then another Germany and which no longer exists. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Word for Word
"Conversations" is less a critical analysis of Fassbinder's work and more a testimony to the sex, drugs, and scandalous mystique that surrounded him.

Witnesses include Hanna Schygulla, Michael Ballhaus, Juliane Lorenz and dozens more who were part of the Fassbinder inner circle.

Not a dull moment on this journey into the joy and terror of Fassbinder. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
"The Marriage of Maria Braun" is the fourth volume in the Rutgers Films in Print Series and the most contemporary of those to appear in it thus far. Because of the enormous influence of New German Cinema and the importance of Fassbinder himself, the film is already considered a classic. "Maria Braun" is its director's attempt to recount and assess postwar German history through the personal example of his main character, played brilliantly by Hanna Schygulla. It is also a tribute to the Hollywood directors of the women's movies of the thirties and forties. Maria, and in the loose allegory Fassbinder has constructed, Germany itself, in their cold acquisitiveness and materialism, melodramatically rise from the ashes of World War II only to veer toward an inevitable doom that takes the film full circle, recalling the film's opening shots of a city reduced to rubble.

This volume contains the editor's introduction, a chronology of the the years 1943-1954, a biographical sketch of Fassbinder, the full transcript of the film as released, notes on the shooting script, interviews with the scriptwriter and director, commentary on Douglas Sirk by Fassbinder, reviews, commentaries by Thomas Elsaesser and Sheila Johnston, a filmography, and a bibliography. ... Product Description

Alfred Doblin's 1929 Berlin Alexanderplatz is a masterpiece of modern European literature. The first German novel to adopt the technique of James Joyce, it tells the story of ex-con Franz Biberkopf. Struggling to survive among the poverty, unemployment, crime, and burgeoning Nazism of 1920s Germany, fate teases him with a little pleasure before cruelly turning him in.

In 1980, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, the genius of New German Cinema, adapted Doblin's novel into a legendary and controversial TV series starring Hanna Schygulla, Barbara Sukowa, and others. Presented in its re-mastered movie version at the 2007 Berlin film festival to unanimous acclaim, it will be on view in an international travelling exhibition.

This book features over 500 color film stills from the series, the complete script, and essays by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Susan Sontag, and exhibition curator Klaus Biesenbach.
