5-0 out of 5 stars great for an enjoyable read and, you'll learn some stuff along the way
"A must" for any 'harp' player. Not only did I find this book enjoyable to read but,I pick up some names to model myself after. It covers: Blues, Jazz, Country, famous players, chromatic vrs. diatonic, you learn the history behind the 'harp,' and more! You'll find yourself lost in its pages, again, while learning some neat trivia while your at it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Harpers' heaven
Previous reviewers have said it all - "savour every word"... "hats off to Kim Field" etc - but my enthusiam makes me want to throw my hat into the ring. I've been writing about music for newspapers and magazines for 25 years, as a sidelight to my job as a journalist, and I'm in awe of the job Field has done with this book. It's exquisitely written and packed with entertaining information. The 20th century harmonica world was populated by all manner of rascals, hobos, eccentrics and maestros (often all wrapped up in the same person), and Field tells their stories in a clean, organised fashion that captures the magic while never resorting to sentiment or hyperbole. While it's very much a book for harmonica nuts, I've been reading plenty of laugh-out-loud sections to my partner, whose passion is more in the classical piano mold. Over the years I've collected a number of compilations of obscure harp players, but they're not obscure anymore. Having them expertly set in the context of their colourful lives has made the listening immensely more rewarding. Bless you, Kim, for putting in the research in the nick of time, before many of these people were dead and unable to speak for themselves. And bless you for your highly professional yet heartfelt approach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading
I found this to be a very enjoyable read and was disappointed when it was over. This should be recommended reading for anyone who plays or is a fan of the harmonica.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Harp players
If you want to know something of the history of the instrument you are playing, you should have a copy of this book.Well written, entertaining, and loads of material.I especially like the interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Unique Work
Very inspirational to me and others who keep trying to swipe my copy. This is so well written and organized that I keep reading much of it over and over again. It is one of those books that you savior every word. It is very inexpensive for such a valuable, meaty, entertaining resource. Mr. Field, thank you for this tremendous read. This material would make a great PBS Ken Burns type documentary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All hail our Dear Leader!
Before I read this stunning book, I used to enjoy opera, eating, freedom, and not having my kidneys beaten with long sticks.Only now do I see the error of my ways.

Set in the vibrant Pyongyang Opera district, we follow the life of a young Kim Jong Il who is torn between his love of opera and his love of torturing dissidents with hot pokers.Only through gentle meditation and stockpiling uranium does our hero come to terms with himself and his country.

Filled with tears and laughter (check out the hilarious chapter in which a search for the North Korean Michael Jackson results in the deaths of thousands), this book is a must read for anyone who enjoys squat despots who wear Elton John glasses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for opera/totalitarian regime fans
Kim Jong Il (Sometimes referred to by his hip-hop pseudonym, "Ill Kim Jong") proves once again that he has his fingers on the pulse of the art community with what is widely considered the seminal work in the crowded Dictatorship-Opera genre.

This book covers the genesis of many of Kim's most famous operatic pieces, including "Kim Jong Il Superstar", "The Great Leader and the Amazing Technicolor Torture Chamber of Oppression", "Die Folterkneht", and his most popular work, "1984! On Ice!". It also contains many autobiographical notes and anecdotes of his experiences during his rise to international opera super-stardom in the early 1970's.

I particularly enjoyed the stories about a young Kim performing the contralto parts of La Boheme with his mentor, noted Russian baritone Joe Stalin. Some of the behind-the-scenes exposition into the technical elements required to learn and perform such a part to perfection were incredible to read. Given the context of those elements, it's clear to see why Kim made the decision to sing as a castrati throughout the remainder of his career.

The full color photos of the famous Pyongyang Opera House (designed by the Dear Leader himself) were an inspiration to me as I missed the official "Great Leader Presents: A Night of Opera and Polka to Usher In a New Millenium of Continued North Korean Domination and Prosperity" concert in December of 1999 due to some minor entrance visa issues on my part... A fact I keenly regret to this day.

I recommend this book unreservedly to anyone who is a fan of the arts, despotism, or state-sanctioned starvation, or, ideally, anyone who is a fan of all three.

5-0 out of 5 stars This makes up for his killing my family
Before I narrowly escaped, Kim Jong Il ordered my entire family put to death for owning a foreign radio.

But reading this makes up for all of that, Hail Great Leader!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Florence Foster Jenkins of Marxist-Leninism
Proof (if any were needed) that high tessituras and hardline Stalinism can make for a fruitful cocktail. Comrade Kim Jong Il, the Dear Leader ™, is not only the rightfully crowned King of Socialism but also a formidable opera queen in his own right. The chapter"Charlotte Church:Crossover as the Dialectical Logic of Late Capitalism, or Just Some Cocky Welsh Teenybopper? " is worth the price of admission alone. The best work of its kind since Pol Pot's "Maria Callas: The Bel Canto Years".

5-0 out of 5 stars The GREATEST Thinker in human history
I used to think that the greatest thinker of all time was Kim Il-Sung. But now I realize what a mistake that was. His son--Kim Jong-Il--is an even more extraordinary talent.

I have never encountered such a tremendous intellect. I read this book nine times so far and I still don't think I have even brushed the bottom of its profundity.

You should buy this masterpiece right now. If you don't have the money, FINANCE IT! Your life is hollow until you experience the dear leader's thought. ... Read more

Product Description
This book provides a comprehensive account of the crucial role automorphic $L$-functions play in number theory and in the Langlands program, especially the Langlands functoriality conjecture. There has been a recent major development in the Langlands functoriality conjecture by the use of automorphic $L$-functions, namely, by combining converse theorems of Cogdell and Piatetski-Shapiro with the Langlands-Shahidi method. This book provides a step-by-step introduction to these developments and explains how the Langlands functoriality conjecture implies solutions to several outstanding conjectures in number theory, such as the Ramanujan conjecture, Sato-Tate conjecture, and Artin's conjecture. It would be ideal for an introductory course in the Langlands program. ... Read more

Description:
Balconies fitted with windows are peculiar to multi-storey residential buildings in Korea, and function as a buffer zone for controlling elements of the outdoor environment, such as noise, heating and cooling load, humidity and so on. In particular, windows installed on the edge of balconies occupy a major portion of the whole building facades, and therefore play an important role in the facade sound insulation of residential buildings. This paper concentrates on the measurement and evaluation of facade sound insulation provided by the balcony windows of nine apartment complexes. Measurements were conducted according to ISO 140-5 and the single-number quantities were analyzed. The results showed that the single-number quantities of the airborne sound insulation of balcony windows varied according to the field test methods and conditions. In addition, the single-number quantities were consistent with the overall A-weighted sound-level differences between the inside and outside of the facades, particularly when using the global road traffic method. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun
I am admittedly the perfect candidate for this series; I don't have much time to sit and stare at a TV and watch most of the brilliant original television shows, but the nature of my work is such that I constantly crave new audio entertainment.Short of flying to London and purchasing every audio drama the BBC ever released or picking up scratchy old-time radio broadcasts, wonderful as they are, there's little or nothing for someone like me to enjoy out there.Beyond that, however, I have no idea how anyone thought they could make money off reproducing old Twilight Zone episodes as radio dramas.I was so excited to find out these existed, and that there are so many of them, I may have a bias; however, I've found many of them to be superior in quality as a bonus.

It's true the translated stories suffer from audio over-exposition, some dubious acting even from the guest celebs and, pulled out of the time-frame in which they were originally produced they don't always hold up.However, on the plus side the stories are as solid today as ever, the sound effects and music are genuinely creep-inducing, the shows have a confident polish and the element that imagination adds to the proceedings is exciting and enjoyable.Imagining the dark, dream-like department store landscapes of "The After Hours" is thought-provoking in ways even the best of today's visuals could never live up to.Not on this collection, but one of the more effective moments is the awful sound of the strange creature Anthony conjures up in the audio version of everyone's favorite, "It's A Good Life."

These shows are also wonderfully quiet and cerebral; I've traveled to cities where they air on local radio stations and can attest they're a wonderful way to chill out before bed time.In a world obsessed with literalization and noise, I'm thrilled that something exists out there for adults to enjoy that involves using one's imagination, even if the product isn't perfect.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Waste
When word got out that "The Twilight Zone" would make its move to radio with Stacy Keach filling in for Rod Serling as
host, the response was generally on the order of, 'Uh,
how can you go from TV back to radio? And why
Twilight Zone to make the regression?' Well, the producers
of the series obviously saw no problem with it...they
pay CBS their fees, get the product on the shelves,
and collect the cash from the sales.

This is, unfortunately, another example of an

over-commercialised, slapdash attempt to sequelize a classic masterwork. If the effort is an attempt to make "Twilight
Zone" accessible to the younger generation, there's no need...you can go pop in a tape or DVD and watch the original
episodes. But this seems to be a case of taking Shakespeare
and cutting out all the middle English, in attempt to make the plays more universal.

The producers hooked Dennis Etchison, an otherwise superlative

writer, to "expand" the great old stories
of Rod Serling (and yes, the stories of Richard Matheson,
Chuck Beaumont, and other writers are going to be
adapted for radio as well, sans a few segments
that don't work well on radio including Matheson's
near-silent "The Invaders" and Serling's highly visual
"Eye of the Beholder"). Sadly, it is all too apparent
that Etchison knows, deep down, that the work of
the old writers can't be topped. For a show like
"The Twilight Zone", whose domain was almost like
a world parallel to our own, with the entire universe
as its breeding ground,
to take its stories and bring them back to the mundane and the reality-grounded
as radio programs is pointless. These first two sets
really come off as no more than bland recitations of
old stories that fans know inside and out from the
original TV versions.

The actors for the first series of eight dramas
include Jim Caviezel, Lou Diamond Phillips, Tim
Kazurinsky, Jane Seymour, James Keach, Blair Underwood,
Kim Fields, Chris MacDonald, and Ed Begley Jr.
Of these, only Jane Seymour does a credible job
as star of Serling's episode "The Lateness of the Hour"
(which originally starred the late Inger Stevens).
Tim Kazurinsky and Lou Diamond Phillips do earn
their paychecks with fairly humorous performances
in episodes "Mr. Dingle the Strong" (originally
starring Burgess Meredith) and "A Kind of Stopwatch",
respectively. The rest of the actors quite obviously
have no clue as to what they were doing, reciting
all their lines as if read directly from a cue card
(which in fact is probably what they did!)

In the role of ersatz-Rod Serling, the narrator,
Stacy Keach pretty much mails in his performance.
His readings of the intro/closings are but
lacking the gripping sincerity and meaning that
Rod always imparted to each and every narration.

Further hampering the dramas is the inclusion
of sponsor commercials, which pop up several
times. The CD versions are all one continuous
42-minute track with no option of fast-forwarding
through the commercials unless done manually.

In short, this new radio series does not yet offer
anything that the original series didn't. The
days of good ol' radio are gone, never to return.
But there are many more of these dramas still yet to
be released. Collections 3 and 4 have already
been released and do offer some nice sound
effects and a fabulous performance by Morgan
Brittany in episode "The Passersby". So perhaps
there's hope. Brittany is the first actor who
appeared in the TV series, to star in these dramas,
and more celebrities are reportedly going to
appear in future installments. Stay tuned...but
keep the volume on low until the producers come
full circle and prove their worthiness to carry
Rod Serling's gauntlet. ... Read more
