Product Description
The noble Veronese houses of Montague and Capulet are locked in a bitter feud. When Romeo, a Montague, and Juliet, a Capulet, fall in love, they are swept up in a series of violent events and cruel twists of fortune. Their secret meetings propel them inexorably to a tragic fate. A true masterpiece, this unforgettable work contains some of the Bard's most beautiful poetry. Performed by Joseph Fiennes, Maria Miles, and the Arkangel cast.Amazon.com Review
Because this production of Romeo and Juliet features afull-cast performance, original music, and sound effects, it couldaccurately be described as an audio play. This tragic tale of theworld's most famous star-crossed couple was originally written to beseen, but the genius of Shakespeare's language is stunningly beautifulto the naked ear as well. When Romeo spies Juliet across a crowdeddance floor, he speaks aloud what may be the perfect description oflove at first sight: "If my heart e'r loved till now, forswear itsight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." Although youcan't see who has so smitten the dear boy, the Juliet you visualize inyour mind's eye is far more sublime than any mere mortal could everhope to be. If there is a disappointment to this production, it is,ironically, the sound itself. At times the actors' overlapping voicesare difficult to distinguish, especially for those unfamiliar withElizabethan vernacular. The music is generally quite good and adds abeneficial element that too few audiocassettes bother to include, butis at times perfunctory and a little too loud. The excellent cast ismade up of established members of England's professional theatercommunity, and their performances meet the expectations one would havefor such a well-trained and respected group. 4-0 out of 5 stars A weak Juliet....otherwise superb
This is overall an excellent dramatization except for a feeble performance by Maria Miles as Juliet. She has no feeling for the language and consistently obscures the meaning of the lines. That's a pity because the rest of the cast - with the sole exception of David Tennant as Mercutio - is as fine as could reasonably be asked for. Joseph Fiennes is a suitably romantic Romeo and gives a finely delineated reading of the part; he is so much better than Maria Miles in their scenes together it's almost comical. Elizabeth Spriggs is wonderful as the Nurse, as are Trevor Peacock as Capulet and Clive Swift as Friar Laurence. David Tennant does his usual overacting buffoonery as Mercutio; his acting in this series is the aural equivalent of pulling faces. With these caveats this is still a recommendable version of the play.

1-0 out of 5 stars Same ISBN, but...
My copy did not come from Arkangel but Greathall Productions, Inc.ISBN was the same, but rather than 3 cd's, I received only 1 with a running time of 1 hour rather than the 3 hours in the description. Can't really imagine this being unabridged, especially after looking at how it is set up, and the fact that it received a creative TOY award.May be great for introducing Shakespeare to young children, but not for high schoolers.I don't know when the substitution came in, but I wish I had known before I wasted my time on this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent product!
I purchased the Arkangel recording of Romeo and Juliet to use in my ninth grade English classroom. My students enjoyed reading the text while listening to the production's talented actors, and they were able to pick up and comprehend some of the more subtle details of the plot.I would definitely recommend purchasing this CD set if you wish to read and enjoy Shakespeare's play or if you are a teacher considering its use in your classroom.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good dramatized audio version
I purchased the cds for my High School 9th graders who read it every year. It makes teaching the play much easier than reading it with the class. The actors and actresses do a great job of helping the listener picture the scenes. I do have one disclaimer though, if you are using this to teach a group of freshman, be warned that they will laugh and make fun of Romeo, who comes off extremely melodramatic and over the top at times. Having said that, it does make the students remember the things he says and it keeps them listening.
Overall a good buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine, poetic performance
Whatever else you say about it, 'Romeo and Juliet' is certainly one of Shakespeare's most vivid plays, and here it is movingly brought to life. Romeo (Joseph Fiennes) is sensitive and poetic, without being effeminate, and Juliet (Maria Miles, in a beautiful performance) is shy and modest, yet full of strong emotion. Clive Swift, better known as Hyacinth Bucket's henpecked husband, does a good job as Friar Laurance. Words are enunciated clearly, bringing Shakespeare's meanings out to the fullest, in a performance outstanding even for Arkangel. ... Read more

Product Description
For the first time in audio publishing history, all of Shakespeare's plays are available in one extraordinary, definitive collection. Based on The Complete Pelican Shakespeare, here are all of the master's 38 plays, complete and unabridged, fully dramatized on CDs with an original score and sound design for each play. A monumental project that spanned five years and cost $3 million, The Complete Arkangel Shakespeare represents the collective vision of four people: Shakespeare scholar Tom Treadwell, film producer Bill Shepherd, BBC director Clive Brill, and composer Dominique Le Gendre. Together they have assembled the 400 great actors of the British theater and produced a landmark digital recording with a sophisticated layering of sound that immerses the listener in Shakespeare's world. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars a thief got to it before I could
Ordered directly from Amazon, brand spankin' new. When box arrived, only 36 of the 38 plays were present. The rest had all been slightly damaged, as if somewhere along the chain of delivery, someone had taken them all out and ripped them. And then forgot to return two.

This was ordering new, direct from Amazon.See the "Amazon verified purchase" tag?

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb resource
Great recordings by British actors - proven to be a fantastic resource for me in my work as an actor and director.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value!
The Arkangel Shakespeare is one of the best investments I've ever made. Both the dramatic and technical quality of the recordings are excellent. Buy the collection yourself and discover why listening to Shakespeare is so much more rewarding than merely reading Shakespeare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection
It's great to listen to each of these cds with lots of well-known artists. I have now listened to 36 and loved each. If you're a Shakespeare fan, this is a must!

5-0 out of 5 stars An immaculate collection.
I can't say enough about this collection. This is an absolutely astounding collection of all of Shakespeare's play, uncut and unabridged, performed by some of England's most talented actors an actresses, as some of the other descriptions and reviews speak of.

What I have found invaluably rewarding as a Shakespeare devotee and as a actor is to follow along to Shakespeare's text while listening to these incredible recordings. I did this for a Shakespeare course in college. We'd be assigned a play to read within a week, and within 2 hours, I'd have it all read, while hearing it performed on these amazing recordings. To hear Shakespeare's words spoken as they would have been originally heard nearly 400 years allows for a greater understanding of the composition and the rhythm of the dialogue and verse. It simply does not get any better than this.

I'd highly recommend this collection. The producers of the Arkangel Shakespeare have obviously taken great care in preserving the text of the play and by employing the best of classically trained actors, the greatest works of English literature, filled with characters and words will blossom in your mind's eye. I cannot imagine any library being complete without this collection, and it is nothing short of a delight to have for your own personal library.

Do not hesitate to consider purchasing this collection for your public or collegiate library, or for yourself. It is a hallmark in the canon of comtemporary presentations of Shakespeare's complete works. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Adaptation!
I chose this book at the library to listen in my car during my commute.Much to my surprise this audio version was truly a gem.I knew little of Charlotte Bronte's work and have never listened or read or watched any novels or adaptations. But Villette caught my eye....

Only to my surprise was Catherine McCormack (who was a fantastic Lucy Snow), Joseph Fiennes and Kiera Knightly (I knew I recognized that voice) all part of the cast.I listened to it twice!

You will really enjoy the story and the actors.I love North and South, Pride and Prejudice and all the classic period dramas so this is a great addition.I just picked up Jane Eyre to listen to and can't wait! ... Read more
