Product Description
“In the process of writing this book I discovered there were clear, broad, even universal themes that ran through my life, a coherent arc to my journey that, if I could be truthful in the telling, might provide a road map for other women as they face the challenges of relationships, self-image, and forgiveness. What I did not anticipate was how my journey would also resonate with men.”

America knows Jane Fonda as actress and activist, feminist and wife, workout guru and role model. In this extraordinary memoir, Fonda shows that she is much more. From her youth among Hollywood’s elite to her film career and her activism today, Fonda reveals intimate details and personal truths she hopes “can provide a lens through which others can see their lives and how they can live them a little differently.” Surprising, candid, and wonderfully written, My Life So Far is filled with insights into the personal struggles of a woman living a remarkable life.Amazon.com Review
One of the most recognizable women of our time, America knows Jane Fonda as actress, activist, feminist, wife, and workout guru. In her extraordinary memoir, Fonda divides her life into three acts: her childhood, early films, and first marriage make up act one; her growing career in film, marriage to Ted Turner, and involvement in the Vietnam War belong to act two; and the third act belongs to the future, in which she hopes to "begin living consciously," and inspire others who can learn from her experiences. Fonda reveals intimate details and universal truths that she hopes "can provide a lens through which others can see their lives and how they can live them a little differently."

5-0 out of 5 stars a rare and wonderful read
Thank you, Jane, for a wonderful read. While perusing your memoir, I often stopped and thought about my own sometimes derailed life and how, I too, after having experienced certain things--a bizarre childhood for one---could go back later in hindsight, see it with fresh eyes and make sense of it.I also was taken with the notion---in a present media culture of everyone wants to be a diva/star----- that you didn't like to be the "star" --often preferred to be enmeshed within a creative group--focusing on a certain vision and the good of a project/movie---and how you prepared for some of your films like Klute. In addition, the men you chose at different times and the way they influenced you fascinated me--Yours was a life never lacking in adventure albeit sometimes frustrating, derailed and melancholy.I found your admission that young you didn't want to be a full time mother--had other aspirations, hence selected men who were exemplary fathers, so your children could thrive---deeply inspiring. You and Ted can both say..I was never on the sidelines--I plunged full throttle.Merci for sharing.

2-0 out of 5 stars Yucky Biography... Yucky Life
Geez... What a shock to find out that as we were all drooling over that perfect body that she was getting it by throwing up everything she ate... does anyone else remember that cover for some major magazine that headlined how terrific Jane Fonda looked at age 40? Now we know why..

This book reveals the most insecure person I've ever imagined, and all this time I thought she was so 'together'.The continual analysis is just plain boring... like anyone really cares about all of that...

She has her own blog, and she's probably embarrasing the heck out of her children and family, as she obviously did everyone she talked about in the book...

Cher's biography was GREAT.. this is bathroom reading... it's like we are all supposed to gain anything of value out of her continually re-discovering HERSELF... always about HERSELF... who cares who she hurt, who she used, who she walked on, and what kind of a U.S. citizen she was.... Now I understand but it's ugly truth...

The worst, most self-centered biography I've ever read, and I've read most of them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not for me
I found the book tedious, too detailed, too long and lacking in wanting to read on. That doesn't take away from the fact that I think she is a remarkable woman, but there was a lack of excitement coming from the pages. More like an historical account of her life so far which it is, but it needed some pizzazz.

1-0 out of 5 stars Oh Please!
I could hardly wait to get this book. Once I received it and started reading it, I couldn't wait to get done with it. I got the impression she wrote it so she could let everyone know what an awesome person she is and how insecure she is and how she doesn't think she's pretty. Wah....Wah....Wah....At times she comes across as an echo of all the hours spent with her therapist. Poor Miss Fonda, her daddy never acknowledged her enough. Oh please. What a waste of time I spent on this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a treat!... From author of EXPLOSION IN PARIS...
What a treat to find the DVD in the back of the book with Jane Fonda talking to us on such an emotional, truthful, down-to-earth level, as if we were enjoying a visit with her. She's a remarkable woman, yes, born with money and wonderful opportunities in life the rest of us will never experience, BUT, the inner workings of the mind, insecurities and grievous relationships of misunderstanding are something we all share. This book was beautifully written and informative on so many levels. I so enjoy reading and listening to an intelligent, well-spoken person such as Jane Fonda. This book is extremely relatable and a wonderful learning experience, as in mentorship, history, and fascination with Hollywood. " My daughter's home, (after her break-up with Ted), had become a womb in which I was pregnant with myself, entering what Dr. Susan Blumenthal described to me as, 'the infancy of my second adulthood.'" These wonderful analogies and beautifully chosen descriptive words throughout were a joy to read. I thoroughly enjoyed every lovely, well thought out word! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good and Healthy, that's what this Book is About
Although Jane Fonda's name is on the book, the recipes are actually by cookbook writer and nutritionist Robin Vitetta and their work together has produced a very good cookbook.

This book was written in 1996 and it touts itself on the cover saying, "Cooking for Healthy Living" and the recipes and info in the book are indeed made for helping you stay healthy and I appreciate that, but I want more than healthy food. If it taste like cardboard Hubby Dub won't eat it. I won't either. So, I'm pleased to say that Jane Fonda's book is chock full of recipes that are healthy and actually taste good. For me and Dub and our friends, eating is an experience. You have to enjoy it, taste is king.

I've had this book on my shelf since it came out a dozen years ago and until I had it, I'd never made a Greek salad. I have my own way of doing it now, but Jane and Robin taught me how. If you've never done one, following their recipe exactly the first time will produce a winner for you, then you can experiment.

I think the best cornbread in the world is Jane and Robin's Chili-Cheese Cornbread on page 193, however it takes twenty minutes or so, so I often find myself going to the world's second best and that's the cornbread in a box that you get at Trader Joe's. I alternate between the two.

The Louisiana Crab Gumbo on page 84 isn't as good as my Mama's, but it's pretty darned good and a whole bunch more healthy. Good and healthy too, that what this book is about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick, Easy, Fun
This is a terrific and easy cookbook with healthy recipes you can feel good about. Easy to follow even for those of us who don't really know our way around the kitchen. I've been using it for years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Low Fat, High Flavor
This is a great cookbook.First, it is a pleasure to look at, with gorgeous full-color pictures for every recipe. It's easy to follow, with clear instructions and ingredient lists.

Most importantly, the recipes work. The recipe for sesame chicken with apricots and snow peas is fabulous, and there are many more that look equally wonderful.

Although this is a cookbook with healthy recipes, some of them are a bit higher in fat.The book notes that when you eat one of those, it's a good idea to balance out your diet with some lower-fat foods. In general, though, this book gives you some great ideas for eating in a healthy way without sacrificing taste and pleasure in food. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars JF Workout Continues to Hold Its Own
I first used this workout program, using only the book, when it first came out in the 1980s.(I used a Michael Jackson LP for the music!)Like another reviewer, I also am 54 and would get up at 5am to do this workout before heading for the commuter train to work.I was also then taking dance classes, and was immediately struck (and reassured) by some of the similarities between the JF workout and a dance class warm-up.Fast forward to today -- weight work, cardio, and Iyangar yoga make up my workout week. But today, for the first time, I took a mat Pilates class at the gym, which made me think of the JF workout.Unfortunately, I got rid of my original book many years ago when we moved, but I plan to buy it again soon!I have realized that it's truly timeless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is this out again?
I first got this book, along with the audio tape, when I was 21.I'm 54 now.Jane did a lot of things in her life I do not support, however, this book I definately do.At the time of my life, it's historical. She actually gave me the courage to be myself, use my own energy, etc, etc.I'd get up each morning at 5:00 a.m. and listen to the audio tape and do the workout and then go to work and it literally saved my life.I lost 50 pounds and have never regained it, even after having two children. Her dicussion of Katherine Hepburn was certainly inspirational.Just decide you're worth it and you'll be happy you bought the book and did it!I just hope they re-release the audio as well as the book.I have very serene memories of working out to "Wasting Away Again in Magaritaville"!Always loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FITNESS BOOK FOR BODY AND LIFE
I purchased this book based on three things. One I wanted to see an example of Jane Fonda's original 1982 workout(hard to find/expensive). Two I love almost all of JF workouts.Three the one review I read confirmed I needed this for my collection. This is truly a wonderful book I can see why it was a best seller. This book offers information on a wide range of subjects from self-esteem, diet, social and enviromental issues, not to mention the two workouts. This was a great buy.
This book offers a begginer and advanced workout. Each workout begins with warm-up and ends with a cool down.At the begging of each exercise routine there is a list of music that could accompany the exercise. This can be used as a guide to choosing your own music. Both routines have an aerobics, arms, waist, abs, hips and thighs, bottocks. The workouts last about 30-45 for beginner and 40-60 mins for advanced. The cardio portion of both workouts are simple but short, however you can easily extend it.
This workout is great for the flexibility it offers. This is a workout that you can truly make your own.You could even do it while you are watching television. One of the things I really liked was making my own music to this workout.Being abel to chose your own music that you enjoy, really keeps you going. This is great if you like to make compilation tapes or cds.
Now I know what your thinking I don't go for exercise books. And for the most part I would agree, with all the page turningreading descriptions and the pictures that make no sense. But this is written and shown in a very clear manner.Over time this should just be a guide. Because you should start to memorize the workout.
This is a great workout if your short on time or you don't feel like going to the gym of even putting a exercise tape in the vcr. This workout out is total body toning. You could even use light hand weights during some of the arm movements for extra work. However some of the movements can be jarring and hard on the joints.Just modify it to fit your own personal needs. If it feels wrong don't do it. If you like this workout I would recommend Jane Fonda's New Workout Book or VHS and Jane Fonda's Women Coming of Age and Jane Fonda's Easy Going Workout.

5-0 out of 5 stars It still works!
As an experiment, I decided to use this book for two weeks with the suggested music. To my amazement, it really works! I'm just 20 and so it is a huge novelty not to follow a tv screen.
In the book, Jane doesn't just address aerobics, but where society places people in life, the enviroment and healthy eating.
I now have this workout on DVD so really use the book as reference to healthy living.
You would have thought that it would be hard to follow a book to workout with. But it isn't. For every move there are professionally taken indepth photographs with descriptions.
You really use this book until you remember the moves off by heart. But it's use doesn't stop there as it is jam packed with so much information.
And the funny thing is it feels better working out in the absense of a television screen. ... Read more

Product Description
Jane Fonda’s visit to Hanoi in July 1972 and her pro–North Vietnamese, anti–American conduct, especially her pose with an anti-aircraft gun used to shoot down American planes and her propaganda broadcasts directed toward American troops, angered many Americans. In their eyes, she was guilty of treason, but she was never charged by the American legal system. Instead, she has made millions, been the recipient of countless awards, and remained an honored American icon. This work investigates Fonda’s activities in North Vietnam and argues that she could have been indicted for treason, that there would have been enough evidence to take the case to a jury, that she could have been convicted, and that a conviction probably would have been upheld on appeal. It also considers Fonda’s early life and the effect it had on her behavior and beliefs in her later years, her audience of American POWs who were forced by the Vietnamese to listen to her broadcasts condemning them as war criminals, her arrival in Vietnam and how it was viewed by American servicemen and civilians, the crime of treason throughout history, and the only Congressional inquiry into her actions, which resulted in the government’s decision to take no legal action against her. Texts of Fonda’s radio broadcasts to American servicemen comprise the appendix. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Disgraceful shameless traitor
I was in Vietnam from March 1968 to March 1969, served my tour of duty and then moved on to a successful career, like most veterans. Of course I later heard about Jane Fonda's despicable words and actions but was busy and did not look into the details.
This book does a thorough job of informing you about how her pro-communist,anti-American propaganda directly hurt the American POW's from both a physical torture point of view when they would not validate her traitorous words, and also from a moral point of view, hearing a well known American condemn their service and sacrifices.
Her radical anti-war, anti-U.S servicmen, anti-American rants had a strong negative impact on the POW's already miserable existance when struggling to stay alive. And then when those who had survived came home, she actually called their recounts of torture lies!
A powerful highly informative book that highlights her disgraceful actions and many of her speeches and comments, in proving conclusively that she clearly should have been tried and convicted of treason-and sadly why the U.S. government pathetically capitulated. If you want to know the true story about this despicable unrepentant traitor, this is book to read.

3-0 out of 5 stars As I saw it then...
My personal feelings at the time Ms Fonda was misbehaving in Viet Nam were that she was a spoiled rich kid making an over-zealous and stupid statement regarding her feelings about the war and the conservative 1950's mindset of the politicians who were running our country. She was used to not being heard by her father, whose approval she wanted so much, and did not think she would be heard or paid so much attention to.She was wrong, and she has apologized. She realized later she had done something stupid, she apologized.I think she would have risked her life for one of our boys then, and I think she would now.I think she is a good person. She made a mistake.Don't think she doesn't regret it.

Oct. 5, 2009
A year after writing the above comment I wanted to add a little.I am more than 10yrs younger than Ms Fonda, and was not really "present" when she was in Viet Nam.I was never a soldier. And I didn't read the book, so maybe I should remove this whole comment.I'm just giving one man's opinion of how the stupid things some of us did when we were too young, and perhaps insulated, to realize actions have consequences, we might not do now.The worst mistakes I made were in my 20's, I'm still paying 40 yrs later.Pray for mercy and forgiveness may be all that's left to do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Strong case against Jane but questionable presentation
This book deals with Jane Fonda and her actions when she visited North Vietnam during the Vietnam War and in authors' sense of belief, gave aid and comfort to the enemy during the time of war. On this, I have utterly no doubt that Jane Fonda, one of our most infamous liberal nazis of Hollywoodland, is guility as she stand.

However, the presentation of the book is bit questionable because the authors appears to be too overzealous in their approach. Research although pretty good, appears to be bit one sided. Not to say that on certain things, they almost sounds outright racists. A good example would be on page 33 when they referred to the term "subhuman Asian communists". Indeed, if the Asian communists were "subhuman", then their behavior would be acceptable since they are not human anyway, right?? Second example, the authors' zealous to paint traitors got them looking in the case of Iva Toguri, and they got her on the crosshair right with Jane Fonda. Unfortuately for the authors, Toguri was actually pardoned by President Ford (first time ever for a case like this). Her trial was misfire of justice as perjury tainted her actions and supporting statements by American and Australian POWs who were aided by her went unnoticed by the court of that period as well as by the authors today. (It was also left out that most of broadcasts made by Toguri were written by American and Australian POWs). It doesn't helped the authors that most American high commands regards Toguri's broadcasts as more of a morale booster for American troops who enjoyed her music and meaningless bombastic statements. Putting Toguri case in this book reflects on one sided research and utter lack of understanding on the part of the authors.

So what is the point of all this? The authors put together a nice case against Jane Fonda but the text of this book is filled with overzealous errors. Most people who read this book like me, needs no convincing that Jane Fonda should be hung, drawn and quartered for she is an out right traitor to our nation. The authors I believed, should stick to that element since every traitor got a their own different story and Jane Fonda's story is unique by itself. There isn't enough impact story on her personally and why even today, Jane Fonda should not be let off the hook. I am not aware of any statue of limitation on treason!

5-0 out of 5 stars Scholarly, Thorough Discussion of Treason
It is now more than 30 years since the last Americans left Saigon, and while most of the embers stoked in the 1960s have cooled, the visit by anti-war activist Jane Fonda to North Vietnam still inflames many.Given the temperature of the topic, any indictment of Fonda should be documented thoroughly and analyzed rigorously. The review of Fonda's activities should be divorced from any discussion of the merit of the war itself (or whether the United States was right to have been involved.)This book fits the bill on all counts.

Unsurprisingly, since one of the authors is a law professor emeritus, this book is written as a legal brief would be: the Holzers discuss the facts in detail; then explain the law; and finally apply the law to the facts."Aid and Comfort" starts with a discussion of Fonda's early life and her involvement as a young adult with left-leaning French friends of her then-husband Roger Vadim.None of this background is necessary for the indictment, as Fonda's motive in going to Vietnam is irrelevant -- what counts are her acts.Nonetheless, it is interesting, and provides a picture of a very insecure woman whose political opinions were formed and shaped by the men with whom she was involved.

The next chapter is a harrowing discussion of the treatment of American POWs by the North Vietnamese and the Viet Cong.It is hard to read, but is necessary to demonstrate the effects that Fonda's words would have on these servicemen. After all, broadcasting propoganda aimed at destroying the spirit of those who were barely clinging to life is more serious than disseminating it to a well-fed population with other sources of news.(In either case, as the Holzers demonstrate, a charge of treason could be levied.)The authors then discuss Fonda's actual speeches (reproduced in full at the end of the book.)They make an eye-popping read.I was unaware, for example, that Fonda had falsely accused the POWs themselves of taking anti-war positions -- a charge which could only sap the strength and morale of these men when the broadcasts were later played to them.

The Holzers then devote two chapters to a detailed discussion of the law of treason.Although legal discussions sometimes can be dry for non-lawyers, the facts of the cases (including the prosecutions of "Axis Sally" and "Tokyo Rose") are interesting and the authors clearly explain the standards for treason. The book then demonstrates why there is enough evidence against Fonda to at least bring a case to a jury. That the government did not do so was due more to the politics of the time than any lack of proof.

Many believe that we should put the Vietnam War behind us and stop ripping scabs off festering wounds. This, in my opinion, is the wrong way to view it.As with Holocaust survivors, the POWs of Vietnam need some measure of justice, no matter how late it comes. While the US government will never actually prosecute Fonda, this book provides necessary healing by trying -- and convicting -- Fonda in the "moral" court.

5-0 out of 5 stars It is not our job to forgive or not but it is our job never to forget
For some time, I have owned this book and would often think about reading it, even picking it up and toying with the idea of glancing through it before placing it back on the shelf opting for another book instead. I guess I was afraid that Erika and Henry Holzer might somehow tarnish my view of Jane Fonda- my pristine unveiled despising of Jane. I always liked my attitude in such matters. What if they told me things about her that I hadn't known were true or worse that I had thought I had known? Though it would be another testimonial to the mystique and unrest of the Vietnam War, I really did not want anymore knowledge of Jane in my head.
I broke down and read it recently and in fact my worst fears were true, but not in the way I expected. I did feel pangs of guilt as I read page after page. They did tell me things about Jane Fonda I had not known, though none improved my image of her. What the authors did do however, was give a very detailed accounting of the cloud surrounding Jane Fonda and her activities in the early 1970's, including trips to Vietnam and other foreign lands. I felt guilt because I had wasted so much time avoiding this book. It is a fine book. It is an incredible book actually. I found it to impressively detailed and well documented. As the scholars that they surely must be, they presented the information based on many sources that are easily verified. I cannot imagine the level of dedication and tenacity required of the authors in order for them to complete their work so thoroughly. I have read many books related to Jane Fonda and her exploits of the early 1970's and none are better. None are even close.
They presented information that was damning to say the least but were just as quick to give research that exonerated Ms. Fonda of acts that she has been accused of for years. Usually books that would seem more of a reference book than a memoir or fiction would bore me, even if they had useful information. To the contrary I was able to start from one cover and work to the other with little interruption. At the end, I was struck by the fact that this book was so well researched and written that it could also easily be used as a reference book.
Knowing what I know about the activities of some American citizens during the Vietnam War, I am quite grateful to authors/researchers such as Erika and Henry Holzer, for I credit them with great wisdom and fortitude themselves for being more objective than the person they chose to write about. I would think the authors would agree with my response to a friend not long ago who told me that Jane Fonda was vilified. "If Jane has been vilified, it has been by her own actions".The authors make clear at the conclusion of their book what they think of Jane Fonda and her actions during the Vietnam War and I completely and wholeheartedly agree and am not afraid to say so. I do not know what the authors think now with so much time that has passed both since the war and since the writing of their book. Perhaps they feel a slight pang now and then that there is a time to let things go, to forget or pretend at least that past wrongs, however vile never happened. I feel a slight pang now and then like that, but it is so small it is a little like gas, maybe it is gas. Because I know that the proof is in the pudding or the book as it were and the things Jane Fonda and her associates did were in fact treacherous and immoral and yes villainous. I recommend this book more highly than I ever recommended any book as a work for history to be truly known.

Product Description
An inspiring look at the politics of a generation through the words of one of the most iconic women of our time—illuminating thirty-five years of activism in the United States.

Jane Fonda's Words of Politics and Passion collects Fonda's most stirring public statements from 1970 through 2005, in speeches, interviews, and articles from over thirty years of tireless campaigning against war and militarism and on behalf of women's rights, women's health, feminism, and the environment. Historian Mary Hershberger "has unearthed a treasure trove," according to Ms. magazine. "Whether discussing peace, feminism or girls' empowerment, [Fonda] is thoughtful, courageous and always committed to the betterment of others."

In 1970, at the height of an award-winning acting career, Jane Fonda took a sharp turn into politics. She would go on to play an influential role in the anti-Vietnam War movement and in nearly every subsequent movement for social justice in the United States.

Hershberger has culled Fonda's words from a range of little-known and previously inaccessible sources, including the declassified FBI files obtained by Fonda herself in a federal lawsuit, and from antiwar movement archives that have never been made available to a general public.

Included in the volume are:
• Fonda's leading antiwar speeches from the early 1970s, from the historical archives of the Indochina Peace Campaign and other peace groups
• the FBI transcripts of Fonda's broadcasts over Radio Hanoi in 1972
• the transcript of Fonda's press conference in Paris after her Hanoi trip
• speeches and interviews on behalf of the antinuclear movement in the 1970s and 1980s
• a fascinating 1984 interview with Erica Jong
• speeches and interviews on feminism, international women's rights, and girls' self-esteem
• Fonda's most recent speeches against the war in Iraq ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Perfect present for a treacherous, unamerican, naive friend
Have you an American friend who hates their country, is extremely naive about politics and likes nothing more then expressing ill-informed, ludicrous views. Someone who is willing to betray their country at the drop of a hat, perhaps someone born to a privileged background who likes to play the role of rebellious anti-establishment figurewhilst sitting on a sizable bank balance thanks to the sweat from the brows of the folks they look down on and criticize.

If so then why not buy them a copy of this book which is full of "Hanoi Janes" most objectionable, laughable and downright unamerican words, guaranteed to get the steam pouring from the ears of anyone who loves the USA, what it stands for and in particular those brave vietnam veterans taken prisoner and tortured by the very people Jane speaks kindly about. Who will ever forget those lovely publicity photos she had taken in front of the anti-aircraft guns which were used to shoot down American aircraft...

I for one will be recommending it to a number of my military friends who are always on the lookout for suitable toilet paper out in the field. ... Read more

Product Description
An antidote to the "Hanoi Jane" myth, the first account of the celebrated actress's antiwar activism.

Jane Fonda is important because she is a celebrity, and unimportant because she is a celebrity. She is a revolutionary who happens to be an actress, and a movie star who happens to be a revolutionary.—Rolling Stone, 1972

As the recent presidential campaign revealed, the Vietnam war remains a political lightning rod. In the 1980s, even as a Gallup poll listed Fonda as one of the most admired women in the country, "Hanoi Jane" had become a reviled figure among conservatives for her highly publicized trip to North Vietnam in 1972. Today, according to a recent poll, millions of Americans continue to link Fonda's name to Vietnam—yet the true history of her antiwar work has been largely obscured.

One of the most popular movie actresses of the 1960s and 1970s, Fonda was also among the most committed and visible antiwar activists of the era. Coming on the heels of Jane Fonda's own memoir, this is the first book to document one of the most interesting (and least known) chapters in Fonda's life—including the first comprehensive account of her controversial trips to Hanoi, as well as her extensive efforts on behalf of American GIs.

Based on unprecedented access to Fonda's twenty-foot-thick FBI files, interviews with the former POWs Fonda met with in Hanoi in 1972, and a broad range of contemporary press reports, Jane Fonda's War is a fascinating and little-understood chapter in the extraordinary life of an American icon. 20 black-and-white photographs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A More Complete Story
Thank you Mary Hershberger for a book long over due. This book along with your other Jane Fonda book captures Jane Fonda in her totality. I do think much of the anger directed at Fonda stems from anger at the government that placed millions of US Troops in a position where they could not win a war with conventional methods and the fact that the Government abandoned them after they returned home.

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident was fabricated to get us into a war that we didn't need to get in. Love her or hate her at least Fonda was not afraid to go to Vietnam unlike George W., Dan Quale, Tom DeLay, Dick Cheney, Ted Nudget, Pat Buchanan and the rest of the chicken hawks.

The fact that the right has failed to destroy Fonda professionally and the fact that she is well received by the public as a whole makes them all the more angry. Fonda didn't send anyone to Vietnam the politicians and the Pentagon did. The right asks blacks, Native Americans, Palestians, etc. to over on and get over it (past injustices). Seems they should do the same.

1-0 out of 5 stars I assume author was drunk
I am agonizing my way through this drivel due to an assignment. OMG. By page 40 we've seen Jane talk about the everyday occurance of My Lai type massacres. Her shock at the bombing of civilian populations, hospitals, etc etc. Mary owes it to herself to at least read something other than Fonda press releases or listen to her interviews. Try The Pentagon Papers. Yes! Even the Pentagon Papers are quite detailed about the U.S. efforts to avoid civilian casualties in North Vietnam. And Hospitals? Jeez, are there actually people so totally screwed up by hatred of America that they can envision our pilots targeting hospitals? (I guess Mary has answered this question). Of course a lot of minor crap like the statement that Jane 'vetted' (my word) the folks at Vietnam Veterans Against the War. I guess starting with good old Al Hubbard. Those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, don't waste your time looking it up. Not worth your time.
The cover quote is cute: "Jane Fonda's True Legacy is an Inspiration." Eve Ensler. I got news for you Eve. We only get ONE legacy. Jane made hers and has to live with it.
Mary is a pretty decent writer. And there's nothing wrong with being a peace activist. But Jane? Does your cause no good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Woman
A great woman and a great cause. Her courage is remarkable no matter which side you are on. History has proven her right.

1-0 out of 5 stars Left Wing Fantasy
Liberal sugarcoating--Filled with stretched truth and falsehoods. The author skillfully injects personal opinion and stretched truth to allude her conclusions as fact based on interviews with POWs. Much of the POW information [interviews with the former POWs Fonda met with in Hanoi in 1972] are self-interpreted, not exact quotation. Any versed POW historian using scholarly texts recognizes H's book as utter B.S.

On several accounts, H interjects "her" word "alleged" regarding torture of U.S. POWs [and no...F-tard, don't start spouting about Guantanamo or Abu G; combatants get better treatment than the Appalachian povert too far removed from society to even know about social programs.]

A reviewer writes, "America and the President are today proud to have Jane as a citizen, because she demonstrates, by her efforts, to bring a peaceful conclusion to current conflicts that so disrupt world harmony."

Question: Were hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese boat people fleeing communism, thousands of which died harmonious?

Question: Was the existence of the Khmer Rouge, supported by North Vietnam, resulting in millions dead in the Killing Fields harmonious?

Question: Joan Baez urged Fonda to protest NVN support of the Khmer Rouge....she chastised Baez for being critical of the Hanoi govt. Harmonious? I think not.

Question: After Jane Fonda and Tom Hayden's [sic] Indochina Peace Campaign [IPC] brought an end to U.S. financial support to the SVN govt. [post U.S. pullout] resulting in tens of thousands more South Vietnamese being imprisoned or murdered Harmonious?

Fonda Quote: "If you knew what communism truly was, you would get on your hands and knees and pray that one day we [U.S.] would be communist."

Harmonious--Communism has certainly worked well for millions of people. Too bad the dead tell no tales.

"Books have sprung up arguing that Fonda should be tried for treason." She should.

If you are trying to wrap your mind around the Vietnam era to include activism, and Fonda, as a VN War associated fixture, hunt elsewhere for an objective book, this one is not.

If you blab on and on about neocons, Christians, Republicans, and the right wing--this book is as much fantasy as Larry Potter and Lord of the Rings, defiantly buy it so you can continue to live in your jacked up, clouded little harmonious world that doesn't exist because people out there still want to kill, us and all that they can understand is the sword.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mary Hershberger Spells It All Out
I enjoyed recreating Jane Fonda's antiwar activism during the Vietnam conflict that so divided our nation.Mary Hershberger's earlier book was at once a more generalized account of US liberals sojourning to Hanoi while the two countires were at war, and a much more academic book than this one, which really could be read alongside the Oscar winning actress' own memoirs MY LIFE SO FAR.I think Jane Fonda might have consulted Hershberger for help on some details because at this point it's plain that Hershberger, a Ohio history professor, knows more about what Jane was up to during those years than she does.

In retrospect it is astonishing that, with the weight of all the right wing press against her, Jane was able to make a comeback in the 1970s and 1980s in the movies, becoming one of the world's most popular film actresses.Even though her movies were sometimes preachy vehicles for her social pnilosophies, she was usually pretty good in them and two or three, from today's standpoint, are first-rate films no one should be ashamed of.However, as Hershberger points out, the invention of the internet was decidedly a blow for Fonda, as it has been used by innumerable right wing groups to spread lies about her activities in Hanoi and elsewhere.

To be fair, these rumors have some basis in reality, but often what started out as something good that Jane did was turned around and made into something evil. Thus the urban legend about the US POWs she was alleged to have met with, and then she asked them for their social security numbers, in the guise of helping them get out.In the 2006 version propulgated by hatemongers, Fonda "jeered at the POWs and then handed their pieces of paper to the Vietnamese guards.Again, the men were severely beaten until three of them died, leaving only the fourth one to tell the tale."Needless to say, this story is completely false.Books have sprung up arguing that Fonda should be tried for treason. It's insane.

Not to say she wasn't getting it from the Left the whole time, for the Godard-Gorin LETTER TO JANE is equally an appalling document, based on the fact that men think they can say anything bad about a woman and get away with it.Nasty little creeps. ... Read more
