2-0 out of 5 stars glenn ford
System very efficient. Book arrived well within the time period indicated and well before I expected it.

Book in good codition etc and well packaged. However the content of the book was not what I expected, given Glenn Ford was a famous film star. I expected the content to be about his films. Instead it was about plants. It would have been helpful to have an indicator of the content of the book. ... Read more

Product Description
The "New Ford" was introduced in December of 1927. With a rare eye for design, the very appearance of the car suggested character. It implied integrity and promised performance. Incorporating a radically different sliding gear transmission. shock absorbers, twice the horsepower of the earlier Model T, and only a slightly increased price, loyal Ford owners without hesitation "laid it on the line" and acquired anew Ford.

Hours after driving the car for the first time, most were convinced that here at last was an automobile that not only "belonged", but which actually led the way into the future. No longer the butt ofcomics'humor, the new Ford had joined the country club set and in the words of a song written by Walter O'Keefe and shortly to become immensely popular......

5-0 out of 5 stars Henry's Lady
I have had this book for a number of years now. Sorry that this is late.
If you want to know about the Model A Ford, Henry's Lady is the book for you. It tells all about how the Model A got it's start and on to it's popularity. It also tells all the models, when they were introduced and the characteristics of each. A very informative book to have in your library! You will NOT be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Another fine offering from author Ray Miller. Love for the car is palpable. Primary source documents are present. The photographs are excellent. I've had the pleasure of running across a couple of Miller's books about Chevrolet, and they are also wonderful pieces of work.

Product Description
Well established as the premier sports anthology, The Best American Sports Writing embraces the world of sports in all its drama, humanity, and excitement. This year's illustrious contributors join the ranks of such celebrated writers as George Plimpton, David Remnick, and David Halberstam. Their exceptional talent and experience continue the series' tradition of excellence, which prompted the Boston Globe to hail it as a "venerable institution".Amazon.com Review
A couple of years ago, RichardFord himself was included in this annual anthology with apersonal--and funny--meditation on hunting with his wife. It's nosurprise, then, that Ford, one of America's finest novelists (The Sportswriter),would turn to DavidMamet, one of America's finest screenwriters and playwrights(Glengarry GlenRoss) to anchor his superlative collection of the year's bestwith a very personal and very funny meditation on a deer-hunting tripin Vermont to mark his 50th birthday. "As a hunter, of course, I am afraud," Mamet admits without much prodding; as an observer of themacho milieu, however, he hits the bull's-eye: "To hunt deer in thickwoods in a snowstorm is one of the most beautiful, happiest, thingsthat I know. I was enjoying it so much," he confesses, "that I missedthe deer," which were passing in front of him a mere 20 yards away.

If Mamet missed his deer, Ford misses nothing, bagging trophy pieceson Ali (by DavidRemnick), Michael Jordan's finale (by DavidHalberstam), a Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo (by JohnMcPhee), the end of Cal Ripkin's streak (by ThomasBoswell), bowling (by SteveFriedman), pool (by J.D. Dolan),and women's pick-up hoops (by Melissa King). Tradition--and sevendecades of good craftsmanship--brings ShirleyPovich's final Washington Post column into Ford's sights aswell.

"There's just something in the American sensibility thatvalues joining the often primal yet contrived acts of sport to theintensities and suave logics of well-made prose," writes Ford in hiskick-off to the volume. "It seems to free us.... Plus reading sportsmay be the only reading for pleasure most Americans ever do." TheBest American Sportswriting 1999 certainly adds to that. --JeffSilverman ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Celebrating JESUS!:)
I bought this as a gift for my dad for Christmas so Im not sure if it's good or not... I didnt want to give it any stars because I have no idea about it but I had to give it atleast one star.So dont take my rating as a "true" rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Home Run, Touchdown, Triumph
If you've liked previous editions, you'll enjoy this one, too. Same formula, and a seemingly inexhaustible supply of human-interest stories from the sports world. Choosing a favorite or two is tough, but I love the bittersweet ones, such as about one of baseball's great "bonus baby" players who never panned out, or about the insane distance bicycle racer.

I'm delighted to see an article from a blog breaking through the "print barrier" in the series. I'm a little disappointed that so many stories came from the NY Times, as well as a couple of plain things from the Washington Post.A little more edge and a little less conventionality has been nice in other editions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sporyswriting as Literature
The 1999 edition of "The Best American Sports Writing" has plenty of moments that will enthrall avid sports fans and even those less avid who merely like a good story. The series is a national treasure, which collects the best sports related writing every year and puts it into a single easy-to-read volume. The sports included run the gamut from the traditional team sports of baseball and football to more extreme examples like mountaineering. The main requirement for inclusion is great writing, and that's wht this series delivers consistently.

The best articles in the 1999 edition include Thomas Boswell's account of Cal Ripken's voluntary stoppage of his historic games played streak, Steve Friedman's biographical article on tormented 2nd generation professional bowler Pete Weber, Allen Abel's hilarous tribute to the long-folded World Hockey Association, and Adam Gopnik's insightful explantion of why World Cup Soccer fails to excite American fans.As always, the quality of the reporting means that even if you have only a margainal interest in the sport described, you'll still find it entertaining.

Overall, another fine entry in an outstanding series.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been longer
Hard to believe Amazon.com can't keep their years straight when it comes to reviewing this series. Anyway, the latest collection of sports writingwas all right but nothing special by the usual high standards. It's asmaller collection than normal, and there are a few hunting and fishingpieces that I couldn't get into. That didn't leave a whole lot, althoughwhat was left was pretty darn good. I particularly enjoyed the articles onthe parents of a benched high school football player suing the school, andon the 1998 World Cup. ... Read more

Product Description
The Ford Model V-8 was introduced in March of 1932. Seeming at first to be merely a new eight-cylinder vee-type engine packaged in a body so similar in appearance to the Model A, many overlooked the significance of the event. Regardless, America was then embarked on an exciting automotive image and the first "primitive" Ford V-8 engine became the first of a common line that except for the War would last until 1954! Twenty-two yearsfollowed in which the basic power plant of the Ford motor car would be relatively unchanged!

America in its desire for the new, or the different, or the "better"went on a buying spree. Purchasers eagerly sought the "next year'smodel" and people everywhere became conditioned by advertising and bytheir environment to dispose of the old and acquire the new. True, changes were made, many of them appearances changes only, butfundamentally the differences in the succeeding Ford V-8 models werelargely in appearance and these changes contributed little to theimprovement of the basic item, a reliable, rugged. sturdy, andcomfortable vehicle. Above all, "a car for the masses" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars PENDULUM
My name is Steven Harvey author of the book IT STARTED WITH A STEAMBOAT which is about the first one hundred years of mechanical transportation revolution. In the process of writing that book I decovered many of the different aviation pioneers spoken of in the PENDULUM.
It is refreshing to find an author that has the guts to state that the Wright Brothers had help from other pioneers that came before them in producing a workable airplane. The fact that the modern airplane was the product of many different men that quite often fought each other just makes the store that much richer and the out come more breath taking!
This is a great book to add to your library that helps to fill in all of those blank spaces that other histories leave us with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pendulum . . . by Jack Carpenter
I have read a lot of books about early aviation and especially Glenn Curtiss, and Mr. Carpenter's book is among the best.It has been very helpful to me to put the entire chronology of the Wright brothers and Curtis and the development of flight in perspective because of the way he organizes his information. This book is most helpful when read AFTER a Curtiss biography, such as Roseberry's book on Curtiss.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Different Perspective on Early Aviation
Pendulum is written for the serious student of early aviation history.Unlike most stories that focus on the Wright brothers' struggles before Dec. 17, 1903, this book delves into what happened AFTER Kitty Hawk.

In 1908 Glenn Curtiss won the Scientific American Magazine trophy for the first public flight in America. It was he, not the Wright brothers, who received instant fame and glory. He built and sold civilian airplanes while they focused on a single sale to the American, British or French Army.

The book explains how early chronicles touted Glenn Curtiss, not the Wrights, as the pioneer of aviation.Thousands of Curtiss JN-4 "Jennys" were used to train WW-I pilots.Today the pendulum has swung to the opposite extreme.Few people know of Curtiss, inventer of the flying boat and father of naval aviation, but everyone has seen the photo of Orville Wright's famous "First Flight" at Kitty Hawk.

In a sometimes dry account, Jack Carpenter meticulously compares step-by-step progress of the three men, with more rare photos than any other book.He tells how they were influenced by Alexander Graham Bell, inventer of the telephone, and Henry Ford, the father of mass produced automobiles.

Having studied the lives of all three men, I think Pendulum is the only book that gives an unbiased account of the bitter patent lawsuit that delayed the growth of American aviation for 10 years. ... Read more

He had previously served as the 20th Premier of Manitoba from 1999 to 2009, leading a New Democratic Party government. Doer was born to a middle class family in Winnipeg. After graduating from St. Paul's High School he studied political science and sociology at the University of Manitoba for one year, but left to become a corrections officer at the Vaughan Street Detention Centre. He later rose to become deputy superintendent of the Manitoba Youth Centre. Doer's work environment was not always safe: he once had to deal with a hostage taking situation, and was attacked with a baseball bat on another occasion. Excerpt: Ruth Elizabeth "Bette" Davis (April 5, 1908 October 6, 1989) was an American actress of film, television and theatre. Noted for her willingness to play unsympathetic characters, she was highly regarded for her performances in a range of film genres; from contemporary crime melodramas to historical and period films and occasional comedies, though her greatest successes were her roles in romantic dramas. After appearing in Broadway plays, Davis moved to Hollywood in 1930, but her early films for Universal Studios were unsuccessful. She joined Warner Bros. in 1932 and established her career with several critically acclaimed performances. In 1937, she attempted to free herself from her contract and although she lost a well-publicized legal case, it marked the beginning of the most successful period of her career. Until the late 1940s, she was one of American cinema's most celebrated leading ladies, known for her forceful and intense style. Davis gained a reputation as a perfectionist who could be highly combative, and her confrontations with studio executives, film directors and costars were often reported. Her forthright manner, clipped vocal style and ubiquitous cigarette contributed to a public persona which has often been imitated and satirized. Davis was the co-founder of the Hollywood Canteen, and was the first female president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, was the first person to accrue 10 A...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=63517 ... Read more
