Product Description

William Forsythe’s twenty year career as director of the Frankfurt Ballet helped to reinvigorate the language of classical dance. His work today continues to see him lauded as one of the greatest choreographers of the postwar era. He is responsible for challenging fundamental assumptions about staging ballet, and for creating work that draws from such diverse fields as higher mathematics, architecture and neuroscience.

This collection brings together essays from a diverse range of critical voices on ballet and contemporary dance studies, alongside analysis and testament from Forsythe’s collaborators and company members, as well as the director himself.

Forsythe’s craft is studied in relation to a variety of production elements, with essays examining the balletic approach, performance history and development, and the use of lighting and music. William Forsythe and the Practice of Choreography offers students and practitioners of ballet and contemporary dance a fascinating insight into the creative world of this visionary director.

Editorial Review

Product Description
Around the world, the American-born avant-garde choreographer William Forsythe is considered one of the most significant and innovative figures in contemporary dance. As the Director of the Ballett Frankfurt from 1984 to 2004, he transcended the boundaries of the genre, creating abstract and geometric dances that were contorted, formal and difficult. Always a proponent of the use of text, he drew on architecture, art, linguistics, physics and philosophy, oftentimes presenting his work alongside distressingly stark lighting and electronic music scores. In 2005, Forsythe founded his own smaller and more flexible company, with which he has continued to redefine the parameters of the performing arts. Increasingly, he is working on multimedia collages--which he presents in art galleries and public spaces with the goal of destabilizing viewers and forcing them to acknowledge their bodies. This volume presents recent installation and film works alongside a text by Forsythe and a dialogue between Forsythe and critic-curator Daniel Birnbaum. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Raising Arizona is a 1987 American comedy film directed by the Coen Brothers and starring Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, William Forsythe, John Goodman, Frances McDormand and Randall "Tex" Cobb. Not a blockbuster at the time of its release, it has since achieved the status of a cult film. Typical Coen Brothers fare, the movie is replete with symbolism, visual gags, yodeling folk music, unconventional characters, flamboyant camera work, pathos and idiosyncratic dialogue. The movie ranked number 31 on the American Film Institute's 100 Years... 100 Laughs and number 45 on Bravo's "100 Funniest Movies." ... Read more

This journal Choreography and Dance contains primary source material as well as the perspectives of dance, and cultural critics and a complete list of Forsythe works up to 1998, and previously unpublished rehearsal and performance photographs of rarely seen works.
American choreographer William Forsythe, director of the Ballett Frankfurt, has created new terms anddirection for classical ballet during the last twenty years. His influence on ballet aesthetics and his work have galvanized dancers and audiences around the world and secured him a commanding presence on the next generation of dancers. The impact of Forsythe's ideas can be compared to that of Nijinksy's choreography for Diaghilev, and his methods resonate with those of the great modern dance radicals Merce Cunningham and Trisha Brown.
Senta Driver was a Guggenheim Fellow for 1978 and sat on the board of directors and the executive committee of Dance/USA. She is now on the Board of the Dance Notation Bureau. Driver has publ ... Read more
