Product Description
Since its premiere in 1936, Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf has become a classic beloved by generations of children and adults. For this enchanting new version of the story, Bono and his childhood friend Gavin Friday have collaborated on a stunning boxed set that includes a clothbound book and enhanced CD. The beautifully produced hardback book contains 64 pages of Bono's original paintings-with help from his daughters Jordan and Eve-to illustrate the story. And the enhanced CD features a fresh and funny rendition of the musical score, narrated in a sly and hilarious reading by Gavin Friday and performed by the Seezer Ensemble. Royalties from the project will benefit the Irish Hospice Foundation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter and the Wolf
Wonderful!A delightful story with interesting illustrations.A fresh change from the typical children's book.Accompanying CD brilliant.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful package (CD, Book)
My husband bought this to share with our seven year old and he had fun following along while his dad turned the pages.
I took it to my preschool class and shared it during storytime one day and they loved it. It held their attention and was entertaining to them.

The illustrations are not too wild for children. They are very child-like.
Anything that has double enterder is for adult minds, not theirs.

I recommend it as a wonderfully narrated, musically accompanied and interestingly illustrated adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars For Adult Bono Fans or can be adapted for children...
"Beware... for wolves come in many disquises."

Peter lives with his grandfather in a cottage surrounded by a high stone wall near a deep, dark forest. In the story we meet a number of animals. The story is read by Irish musician, Gavin Friday, who has a very enjoyable sensuous voice.

To make this book kid friendly (from my teacherish perspective), I'd recommend glueing the first cat picture page shut. You could buy one for the kids and one as a collector item - so if you object, the problem can be easily remedied. I just think it is a little too suggestive for younger children (unless they are used to art museums, then they won't blink an eye), although adults will easily see the double meaning of the book's contents that seems to deal with temptation and being swallowed up by darkness. The other pictures seem fine.

The duck with the bill that extends out like a cross seems to be in contrast with the first bird that looks more like a dove. I took it to mean you should live your beliefs instead of just making them a show. Pretty clever to show that in an illustration so subtely. The dove and the cat also contrast sharply and the meaning is very clear.

Bono's illustrations are beautiful and he drew the pictures with the help of his children. I purchased this for a collector friend and couldn't help myself, I read it first and listened to the CD. For some reason, I thought Bono would be reading the story.

My dad heard me listening to this in the office and thought it would be fun to listen to on Halloween. There are fun elements of suspense throughout the music and now and then it gets a "little" scarry.

For adults who heard the music as children, the combination of the music and the story makes the story much more meaningful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter and the wolf
This CD and book set is absolutely wonderful. Maurice Seezer and Gavin Friday have done a fantastic job of the musical arrangements and Gavin's voice is perfect. The illustrations by Bono and his two girls are perfect, it just shows how talented they all are. I have purchased this as a gift that my 18 month old daughter will hopefully have foreverand I will make sure that I also get a copy for my soon-to-be-born son.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!
When I was a little girl I loved to listen to the story of Peter and the Wolf.As an adult, I have grown to love celtic music and traditional Irish instruments. So when this set came out I was eager to purchase it -- and I was thrilled with what I got.

The music is beautifully performed by the Friday-Seezer ensemble. Each instrument comes alive as the animal it is supposed to represent. While the music is definitely Prokofiev (no doubt about that) it has an Irish flavor that is just enchanting.

Although I wasn't too keen on the pictures when I viewed them on a website, I thought they worked wonderfully in this book accompanied by the music.

And last, but not least, Gavin Friday cannot get enough credit for his wonderful narration of the story.

All in all, the story is whimsical and fun, just like I remembered it to be.I agree with the other reviewer that it would be nice if the book were larger, but aside from that I have nothing but praise for this set. ... Read more

When Prokoviev premiered "Peter and the Wolf" in 1936 he can scarcely have foreseen quite how successful his playful classic would become or how consistently it would delight children of all ages for years to come. Now in a remarkable publishing venture, Bono and his childhood friend Gavin Friday of the Virgin Prunes have collaborated to produce an irresistible and enchanting version of the classic story in book form and enhanced CD. The beautifully produced hardback story book will contain 64 pages of Bono's original paintings - with help from his daughters Jordan and Eve - to illustrate the story. And the enhanced CD gives a totally fresh, funny and original rendition of the classic musical store, narrated in a sly and hilarious reading by Gavin Friday. 2-0 out of 5 stars Pornographic book
I'm not a prude when it comes to literature but I found the illustrations offensive for a child's book. The illustrations of the cat and Grandpa both depict human genitalia. In case you think that this is just my misinterpretation of the drawings, I polled multiple adults without telling them about the pictures and they all had the same conclusion. My 5 year old daughter did not like the modern Peter and we couldn't understand why the duck has such a ridiculous upper bill. The classic version of the story is better.
I enjoyed the accompanying music and narration- it is creative and not overdone.I would recommend purchasing the music CD separately.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it!
This purchase was a supreme disappointment!

Those familiar with the traditional rendition of Peter and the Wolf will immediately notice this versions diminished story line.Although the music was technically/creatively competent, the numerous omissions were a clear distraction.

The accompanying book was an absolute flog.Bono's illustrations were feeble, and at times inappropriate (especially the rendition of the cat). His jaunty presentation of Peter, wearing sunglasses, was an obvious narcissistic self-homage.Family and friends universally agreed that this book had a "negative feel" to it.I salute Bono and his musical talent... but he is clearly out of his depth with this book.

Do yourself a favor... stay away from this purchase!

As North Carolina enters a new century, perhaps no southern state faces a more intriguing combination of challenges and opportunities. Changes in the state's economy, shifts in its population, and a widening breach between urban and rural areas are just some of the forces that are reshaping North Carolina at this pivotal time in its history.

5-0 out of 5 stars A definitive analysis of changes in North Carolina
This is the most comprehensive andinformative state atlas I have ever reviewed.Excellent maps, great charts and clearly written text makes"The North Carolina Atlas" a book that needs to be on the shelf of every public library and in the hands of all North Carolina devotes.Over the last century North Carolina has transformed itself from a struggling southern state to one of the fastest growing economies in the U.S. "The North Carolina Atlas" provides a definitive analysis of the changes that have created this wonderful state.

History, population, urbanization, and economy are transforming forces that molded North Carolina into what it is today. Each of these sections are clearly laid out so that the reader can make a critical analysis of the change and form an assessment of the coming changes that the future may bring.

Especially interesting are the sections that deal with quality of life in North Carolina.Crime, education, health care, water and air quality, cultural arts and outdoor recreation are profiled and supported by scores of maps, charts and diagrams. This is a book I would especially want in my possession if I was considering moving my family and business to this State. Highly Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars More Than Just Maps
As Governor Jim Hunt says in the forward, "North Carolina is at a crossroads in its history."This "atlas" provides not only a wealth of information, but an intelligent perspective on the future ofthe state as it enters the 21st century.

Subjects matter includes thenatural environment, history, population, urbanization, economy, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, trade, politics, air quality, water resources, crime, health, education, arts, and recreation.I foundthese topics to be presented in an effective manner and certainly moreenlightening than the statistical record one might imagine.

I alsodiscovered, before I placed my order, that I was able to preview some ofthe book's illustrations at the UNC Charlotte Cartography Lab web site.

Iwould recommend this text not only to students, researchers and teachers, but anyone interested in a comprehensive and knowledgeable summary of thediverse state of North Carolina. ... Read more
