Dignity is often defined as the quality of being worthy of esteem or respect. Self-esteem, self-regard and self-respect are all values that every child and adult should bestow upon themselves and others. The words," I feel like nobody," this simple phrase should never be spoken or come out of the lips of a child or an adult. We are all somebody and we all have the right to have our thoughts and opinions heard and recognized. Our accomplishments should be praised and our shortcomings and mistakes understood, explained in order that both children and adults learn from their errors and not by being ridiculed because we are not perfect. This brings me to my review of a very innovative and creatively written book; Dignity Rocks by author Stephanie Heuer.

Children are sensitive to the moods, words and actions of adults, their peers and their teachers. Harsh words or being ignored or laughed at, can create a negative effect on a child's self-esteem and self-worth and more. Children look to the adults in their family, older siblings, and teachers for respect, guidance, acceptance and security. The author of Dignity Rocks makes a strong statement to both adults and children about how it feels when a child cannot speak his or her words and their voices go unheard. Making a child feel invisible, alone or upset when family's fight can often make the child feel isolated and alone. The author asked many different youngsters to fill in the blank: I feel like nobody when__________. This is a powerful statement and the answers were quite poignant, revealing and heartfelt. A child who feels like nobody when parents fight and no one listens to their words can turn themselves off and often feel alone in their own private world. When someone talks about them behind their back, or laughs when they fell down or trip, their self-respect and dignity are bruised and it can leave a negative effect on that child and make them think twice about trying to do something new in front of others for fear of being laughed at.


Children do not like to be ignored when they need to speak to an adult as shown when the little boy wants his mother and she is engaged on the phone. When a father no longer lives at home and the child cannot say good night to him the child feels like nobody because the other kids have their dads all the time. The way a child dresses is not often their choice but that of a parent. Not every parent can afford designer clothes, shoes or fashions. Children feel left out when they dress differently from their friends and are hurt when they are laughed at and do not fit in with the current trends.

There are many important points that are made by the author and many children who answered her first question as to when they felt like nobody. These answers are crucial to helping adults understand just how harmful their actions and words can be to child's dignity and self-worth.

On the opposite side she counteracted the negative feelings and asked the same children to respond to the prompt: I feel like somebody when: on child answered: When my dad plays ball with me; another when:my friends recognize what I do best, a third: when no one interrupts me when I speak. My favorite: when everyone in my family does everything together. This reminded me of my Sundays when my Dad was not working and we all spent Family Day doing whatever would make the entire family smile and happy.

Added to the book and helping the reader to understand how each child felt about expressing their feelings in both prompts are the illustrations. The reader can see and feel the emotions of the child that is upset about being made fun of or feels alone. The reader can see the look of joy and elation on the same child's face when something great and wonderful happens that makes the child feel like a somebody.

On page 26 of the book the author provides a guide for educators, group leaders, parents, and youth groups to help teach life skills, character education and DIGNITY and the true meaning of the word. Dignity Rocks should be in school libraries, the office guidance counselors, study schools, hospital libraries, group homes, and schools and in every home for all children to read. Dignity Rocks and so does author Stephanie Heuer for writing this book and sharing it with us.

I would definitely recommend this book to every child, parent and adult to read.

It does not disappoint
The emphasis of this book is on creative techniques, graphics and imagery.If you are new to CS2 you will appreciate that it also introduces CS2's new features.When I purchased this book, I also purchased the Photoshop CS2 Bible. I love them both.What I especially appreciate about the Professional Edition is that it takes you beyond the basics, expanding on features of Photoshop that make creative artistry more easily accomplished.Camera Raw, the Channel Mixer, Levels, and Curves all help a photographer produce outstanding images from less than outstanding shots.These features are explained in detail in Photoshop CS2 Bible, Professional Edition.It has helped me tremendously.

Deke McClelland is quite possibly the most accessible and humorous Photoshop guru around, rivaled only by Scott Kelby and Russell Brown. In the introduction to this book, he asserts that he was born in Verona in 1511, and later, with diabolical intent, developed a pathogen code named the "Pernicious Instrument of eXtreme Evil" (you guessed it, "pixel" for short). Then, in the words of the introduction, "When his invention turned out to help rather than hurt photography, he went quite mad. He now inflicts his revenge by writing educational books and hosting training videos."

Although written with his characteristic wit, McClelland always returns to the point, very carefully and thoroughly explaining the precise steps needed to achieve various results in Photoshop, so that even a beginner will be able to follow along easily. Having said that, this book is true to its "Professional Edition" designation - it covers very advanced techniques. For example, one very interesting bit of information I picked up is that Layer Styles (automated effects provided in the Layer Styles palette) can be "deconstructed" - that is, by choosing Layer > Layer Style > Create Layers, you can take over and edit each layer of the effect to your satisfaction.

Attention to detail is one of the hallmarks of this book - in the chapter called "Painting and Brushes," McClelland even covers the hardware a Photoshop artistwould probably use (the Wacom tablet), and elaborates on the techniques it can facilitate.

Well written and designed, and with color photos and screenshots throughout, this is a tome (649 pages!) that should serve as a useful reference for years to come. Although this is written to cover Photoshop CS, nearly all of the techniques covered would apply to Photoshop CS2 as well. Supplemental information can be found at dekemc.com.

Great photos and graphics, sage advice.
The features you need, the advice you want, the examples you'll refer to again and again: that's what you'll find in this book. The experience and insights that the authors bring to this book have made it one of my favorites among computer books in general and my total favorite among Photoshop books. I recommend this edition of the Bible to anyone who has already used most of the basic features and wants some expert advice to move them on to the next level. The "Professional" tag is appropriate, but you don't need to be an expert to use the book: that's where it takes you. Don't expect this book to baby you and for every single button and dialog box to be covered, because this is a book focused on the features you use for more advanced projects, and the work that pushes the edge of the design envelope. If you're looking for coverage of everything in the Photoshop menus and tools, get the main CS2 Bible, the one that's like 1500 pages. If you want to learn specific stuff to take your work to the next level, the Professional Edition is the one you want.

Best Desk Reference
I teach others how to use PowerPoint.I design and sell PowerPoint templates.I would say that this is the perfect desk reference for anyone who has to give presentations.In clear, step-by-step instructions, this book tells you how to do everything off the shelf.I use it often.The only downside is that macros and VBA are not addressed.However, I appreciate a book that also gives tips on making the actual presentation as well as how to use PowerPoint.After all, making slides is only half the battle.

No Error!Picture Instructions Included
The reviewer just before this review stated that this manual has an error in that it leaves out instructions on adding pictures to the PowerPoint.The reviewer was in error, as pages 284-285 discuss formatting a picture and page 279 describes how to apply a picture fill.The entire chapter 11 deals with inserting clip art, including WMF, CGM, BMP, PNG, GIF, and JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Groups) formats.This chapter clearly describes how to insert these types of images into a PPT presentation.

One glaring omission
I thought I was going to like this book, and in fact it does cover most of the topics fairly well. It is well-organized and includes a useful CD. But it has one GLARING omission: no discussion, not even a mention, of inserting pictures. So if you have scanned images or images from a digital camera, you won't get any help from this book. This is such a common use for Powerpoint that I kept thinking I was mistaken, but it's just not there. Animation, sound files, clip art, Word Art, graphics you draw -- all are covered, but photographs and scanned images (i.e., JPEGs, GIFs, TIFFs, etc.) don't get a mention. This powerful capability of Powerpoint is my associates' (university faculty and physician-educators) stock in trade, and the real reason they use Powerpoint. Sadly, the book spends a huge amount of space on what is really trivial decoration - clip art images and Word Art. What do the author's think is important? Why do they think we use Powerpoint?

Its a very good book in the sense that it clearly explains how to use powerpoint2000 and how to design presentations and present them. It does not however give you assignments to do, not does it give you questions to test what you've learned.

Us and Them
Anyone familiar with Evangelical Christianity of the last forty years could probably reel off at least a half-dozen proposed candidates for the Antichrist. In Naming the Antichrist, Robert Fuller demonstrates how often crises within the nation and the American Church have precipitated the naming of religious and/or secular forces within the country as minions of the Antichrist. In so doing, he connects the theme of a satanic influence seeking to undermine the nation's status as a bastion of true Christianity forming out of the experiences of the Puritan influence in the British colonies in America and passed down as a unique element of our American heritage.

Fuller begins his exposition with an overview of the history of the concept of an antichrist. His view of the Biblical texts largely assumes secular biases and is the most unsatisfying aspect of the book. However, it has little bearing on what follows and can largely be ignored. The book begins to hit home with the assumption of many Protestant Reformers that the papacy was the Antichrist predicted in Scripture. This assumption - born in the struggles of the Reformation and its aftermath - was gradually discarded by many European Protestants over time but became etched in the collective consciousness of those who left for America.

The Elizabethen Settlement, with a compromise between Protestant and Catholic sensibilities, was totally unsatisfactory for the Puritans who wanted a church completely devoid of any remains of Roman ritualism. Cromwell's bloody revolution and the tyranny that followed soured the English on Puritan ideals and after the Restoration many of their negan a trek that would bring them to America. With them they brought their intense hatred of Catholics as the legendary "other" as they sought to build their "city on a hill." With no Catholics around to dread, the Antichrist rhetoric was put on a back burner but there was an inherent assumption that they were building the great Christian society free of popish influence. On the occasions that their hegemony was threatened, the natural inclination was to attribute a sinister motive with Rome as the likely power behind the nefarious plot.

The ineveitable assertion of British control over the colonies with its Church and "popish" Common Prayer was, of course, an obvious source of displeasure. But even events within their own communities were seen as threats. The perception of threats from without and within engendered a sense of trepidation that could and did veer out of control when a loss of their beloved "perfect Christian society" seemed imminent. The events surrounding the Salem Witch Trials demonstrates how events that could not be explained by their categories of thought could be combined with this fear to produce tragic results.

Out of this foundation came a tradition of "naming the Antichrist" as a method of closing debate, separaing "us" and "them", villifying the enemy, and protecting the societal hegemony. Whether the enemy be Catholic France (in the French and Indian War) or later the British (in America's war for independence), the struggle was painted in apocalyptic terms with the enemy an agent of the devil himself. Of course, many prominent Americans who supported these causes were Englightenment thinkers who were aghast at their allies rhetoric but were grateful for the wide support it generated. Thus the sometimes strage allies we see today with intellectual neoconservatives and Evangelical Christians is itself a tradition with a heritage.

This pattern would continue throughout the 19th century. Americans attempted to construct their "perfect society" that would transform the world with evangelization, orphanages, soup kitchens, temperance movements, and other social endeavors and a postmillennial eschatology dominated. During stable periods, the antichrist rhetoric would recede but resurfaced when a threat was percieved. These could be in the form of Enlightenment philosophy, Freemasonry, or Catholic and Jewish immigrants from Europe. During the Civil War, anti-slavery forces in the North and pro-slavery forces in the South demonized each other as Satan's minions.

The loss of Protestant hegemony in the 20th century brought an end to the dream of the "perfect Christian society" and there was a retreat into a pessimistic view and a developing dispensationalist eschatology. Yet the overall pattern for "naming the Antichrist" has become such a staple of American life that it survived in new forms. Theological modernists who disagree with all that came before now seek to build their perfect society and demonize opposition in a more secularized form. Our political discourse is centered on the inference of nefarious motives by the opposition. And, of course, Evangelicals have continued the unbroken American tradition of pointing to an enemy as the son of perdition.

Throughout his analysis, Fuller resists the temptation to sit in judgment but takes the role of historical analysis seriously. He provides a framework for understanding how American Protestantism achieved its distinctive elements and how this affected the country's history. For those seeking to understand the American tendency to see itself as a land of destiny and to see all of its conflicts - both foreign and domestic - in apocalyptic terms, Naming the Antichrist is essential reading.

Thoroughly researched, fascinating and scholarly...
First off the reviewer who said this book reveals how "dangerous Christianity" is completely off the mark and does this book a disservice.This book is not a critique of Christian values, culture or doctrine - it is merely a well researched glimpse at the history of the "Antichrist" (as either an individual or group) throughout history from it's roots in antiquity up to the modern age.

It's true that throughout history individuals and institutions have used the image and language surrounding the Antichrist to demonize (pun intended) individuals or groups of people.Today we in the 21st century can look back on this persecution through the lens of temporal ethnocentrism and deem such behavior immoral.But that's not the goal of this book.

Naming the Antichrist is a sober, unbiased examination of the history of the "Antichrist" in doctrine and popular culture.It is a well researched, if somewhat dry read that is fascinating to history buffs and potentially valuable to students and other researchers.

Further, anyone who is interested by the concept of the Antichrist would do well to read this book - particularly in light of our modern era's fascination with dispensationalism and it's impact on world politics.Fans of Left Behind or Hal Lindsey can brush up on the historical underpinnings of some of the concepts they weave in to their fiction.

I give it four stars instead of five because it is a dry read at times.Fuller set out to write a scholarly work and succeeded.
