Product Description
Thomas Hardy's first love was poetry. It was not until 1898, when he was 58, that his first book of poetry, Wessex Poems was published. For the final years of his life he abandoned fiction and devoted himself entirely to poetry; he is now not only regarded as one of the most important English novelists but is also a poet of major stature and increasing popularity. The Complete Poems includes Hardy's more than 900 poems, complemented by detailed notes. Collected here are his eight books of verse, all the uncollected poems, Domicilium, and the songs from The Dynasts. This new edition contains an additional poem, The Sound of Her. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardy's First Love
Hardy's novels evoke dark moods and frequently feature innocent victims of others tragic flaws. Strangely his poetry is a mixture of light and dark but leaning heavily on the light as his focus on memory of loves lost and other themes can be uplifting rather than grim. I've always found it fascinating that a novelist as richly talented as Hardy would turn from fiction and concentrate only on poetry in his later years. His novels are among my very favorites and I read them repeatedly. For me, having this collection of his poems is icing on the cake even though I am not a frequent reader of poetry. Thomas Hardy was a literary genius and these poems are infused with his artistic integrity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
Perfect! What more needs to be said? This collection was delicious and is a treasure for any Hardy fan. Enjoy every bite!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardy Poems
The book was in excellent condition and arrived as promptly as one could expect. As of this date I really haven't had a bad experience with any of my book orders. Thanks so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great poems from a great novelist
Considering how depressing Hardy's novels can be, his poems are curiously uplifting, full of descriptive power and a love of rural England.Among his classics are "The Darkling Thrush", "Channel Firing" (great World War I poem), and "The Oxen" (beautiful Christmas poem about nostalgia and faith).

Like his novels, the poems illustrate Hardy's capturing of the past and his sense of something greater than us shaping our lives and our feelings. These are apparent in "Last Words to a Dumb Friend", his lament for his deceased cat.In this, the very home where the cat lived seems to resonate with the cat once he has passed to "the Dim" (i.e., beyond Death):

"And this house, which scarcely took
Impress from his little look,
By his faring to the Dim(NOTE: faring = travelling)
Grows all eloquent of him."

5-0 out of 5 stars The Poet ofPast Time and Past Love
Hardy had a life-long fascination with the paradox of memory: how people, events, and even isolated feelings can be buried by time and later resurrected in the fullness of emotional memory. His central aesthetic principle is that of `the exhumed emotion,' which one can wryly interpret as a graveyard variant of Wordsworth's "emotion recollected in tranquillity." But for Hardy, it was a mysterious capability, like his comment that "I am cut out by nature for a ghost-seer." Hardy's aesthetic of the "grotesque" frequently features past lovers as ghosts or elusive phantoms.

In"She, to HimIII" he muses on the "souls of Now" who would disjoint / The mind from memory, making Life all aim, / And nothing left for Love to look upon." In this brief phrase, from the start of his career, can be found four of the major themes of his entire life and work: the present ("Now"), memory (past), Life, and Love, all in tension with one another.

The volume contains innumerable poems of unrequited love, regretted love, guilty love, repentant love, etc. etc. One of the great English poets of the 20th century. Ranks with Yeats and above Heaney. ... Read more

Product Description
Trying to call every market turn? Tempted to act on impulse rather than fact when investing your money? A major mistake made by most investors and traders today is to try to call every market turn - a tactic that has very little chance of success. Not only is there a tendency to lose perspective in attempting to call every trend reversal, but also we invariably exhaust our objectivity and ultimately lose touch with the markets.

THE FACTS ABOUT SPECULATION is a series of warnings about the dangers of speculation by the unprepared investor. Long considered an investment classic, Thomas Gibson demonstrates superior skill in analyzing, examining and offering the most important influences on stock prices. Concentrating on human errors in speculation, he maintains that excesses of emotion are principally responsible for a majority of speculative investment decisions. ... Read more

Product Description
"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? . . . The Shadow knows!" And who knew The Shadow better than his creator, Walter B. Gibson. Relatively few people have heard of Gibson, but many more are familiar with The Shadow having heard the program on the Blue Coal Radio Program in the 1930s and read the Street & Smith Shadow novels.

Walter B. Gibson’s life and career come out from behind The Shadow in this biography. It covers his youth in Philadelphia, his development as a writer and magician, his wives, including the third, (Litzka, who was a harpist and magician in her own right), his time living in Maine and upstate New York, and his later years and death.

In addition to being credited with creating The Shadow (he used the pseudonym Maxwell Grant), Gibson wrote 187 books, contributed 668 articles to periodicals, created 283 stories for The Shadow Magazine, wrote 48 separate syndicated feature columns, reported the adventures of The Shadow and Blackstone the magician in 394 comic books and newspaper strips, and helped develop 147 radio scripts and many other works under numerous pseudonyms. Gibson has invented many widely used magic tricks and traveled with and befriended Harry Houdini, Howard Thurston, Harry Blackstone, Sr., and Joseph Dunninger. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Much more than I expected.
Possibly because of the format I thought that this book was going to be like many of the pulpateer biographies out there with a lot of rehashed stories and not much of anything else. But his one was realy entertaining. No scholarly disertation by a fanboy trying to make us think he is a professor and yet contains all the relevant facts about a writer whose life is as mysterious as his characters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Shadow fans and pulp affictionados
This book is great for Shadow fans, so grab this one before it goes out of print(as most other Shadow related books are)! There is plenty here for the seasoned Shadow fan, and the newcomer too.Pulp covers are reproduced in black and white, as are the various photographs of Walter Gibson. The biography is written in a clear, easy to read style, and is very informative.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Shadow Knows!
Walter B. Gibson is a very overlooked cultural influence in America, arguably even to this day.His Shadow character captured the imagination of a generation, and even spawned a movie (with a too watered-down plot) in the early 1990's.So much Shadow lore is available out there - comics, radio shows, and novels - but many overlook the profound effect of Mr. Gibson, who is entitled to a cult following similar to that of HP Lovecraft or Robert E. Howard.I give this book 4 stars because of the price - it should be about 15 dollars cheaper. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A seemingly reflective work of quaint and nostalgic poetry.
Chosen Poems, compliled by Hardy himself later in life is an essential look at Hardy the poet. While Hardy the novelist spun tales of romance and intrigue, his poetry suggests a more reflective tone. The sentimentalnature of most of his poems thrusts the reader into a mind coursing madlyabout lost loves, and the ancestrial rememberances of better times.Themetaphors are thick and the syntax archaic to a modern ear, however thesing song nature of much of the rhyme and meter ushers those of us ingeneration X back to the day of green eggs and ham.Near the end of the1978 edition edited by Francis Shapiro Puk Hardy's Epic Poem recounting thelife of Napolean is added making that edition a more complete andfulfilling read.I recommend Thomas Hardy's Chosen Poems as a vehicle totransport the bored reader to a time of ideal notions and loftyreflections.Your time will be well spent and your vocabulary improved! ... Product Description

Thomas Hardy is today recognised as second only to Shakespeare in the greatness of his achievement. Writer of fourteen published novels, two or three of them among the greatest in our language, of that remarkable Napoleonic epic, The Dynasts, of nearly eight books of verse containing some of the finest and most anthologised of all English poems, and a host of short stories, Hardy is a fascinating literary personality. James Gibson traces his life from his birth in a humble cottage in Dorset to his death and burial in Poets' Corner in Westminster Abbey. We see Hardy in the first thirty years of his life determined to become a great writer and earnestly preparing himself for that career. For most of the next thirty years he wrote novels which slowly brought him fame and wealth, and then, returning to his first love, poetry, he achieved a similar success as a poet. He is shown to be a highly professional writer who drew largely upon his own personal experience and took great pride in his calling.
