4-0 out of 5 stars A space exploration fact book
All the answers to all the questions you have about living in space.Have you ever wondered what it's really like for an astronaut in our space? From the exciting moments to the day-to-day details, from serious to the humorous, here you'll find the most up-to-date answers to every question you've ever had about living in space.

5-0 out of 5 stars What It Is Like To Fly In Space
I heartily recommend this book to anyone, adult or teenager, who wants
to know what it is really like to fly in space. One would think that astronaut autobiographies would talk about what it is really like to fly a mission, but only Mike Collins' book "Carrying the Fire" really does this.Bill Pogue's book is not an autobiography, but he does, in a question and answer format, tell the reader about the experiences of space flight.Pogue, along with fellow astronauts Gerald Carr and Ed Gibson flew the last Skylab mission leading to the then American record of 84 days in space. This gave Pogue plenty of time to think about his experiences (other astronauts who flew the much shorter duration Mercury, Gemini and Apollo missions said that the fact that their flight plan was so crowded, they didn't really have time to absorb the experience).
One interesting thing is that Pogue mentions that he did have some problem with space sickness, but that within a day he was able to work
a full-day's schedule.Apparently, he was somewhat understating his problem because director of Flight Crew operations Deke Slayton who chose the flight crews, said in his book that this crew suffered more than others from this, and Pogue had it the worst which surprised Slayton since he had flown with the Thunderbirds, the Air Force's aerobatic team which puts planes and pilots through violent spins and dives. This shows that space sickness is a different phenomenon than regular air sickness.
Another interesting thing he points out that people don't think about is that once the space helmet is on, it is difficult to deal with itches on the head and face. The helmet does have a protrusion for the nose into which the astronaut can insert his in order blow in order to equalize the pressure inside the ears, and this protrusion can also serve to scratch the nose. However, he points out that his ears would also itch and there was no way to deal with this, except to try to think about something else.
After reading this book, I have to take my hat off to these men who endure thedangers and discomforts of space flight in order to push back
mankind's boundaries frontiers of knowledge.

Product Description
It is increasingly accepted that "institutions matter" for economic organization and outcomes. The last decade has seen significant expansion in research examining how institutional contexts affect the nature and behavior of firms, the operation of markets, and economic outcomes. Yet "institutions" conceal a multitude of issues and perspectives. Much of this research has been comparative, and followed different models such as "varieties of capitalism", "national business systems", and "social systems of production".

This Handbook explores these issues, perspectives, and models, with the leading scholars in the area contributing chapters to provide a central reference point for academics, scholars, and students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars jasper johns
here is a fabulous book on the american painter Jasper Johns.
As usual, the museum of modern art offers us a big book (more than 400 pages), with beautiful pictures of his work and a great look at his artistic evolution.
So, if there's a book about Jasper Johns to buy, this is the good one!
very complete and great page setting.

Did you miss the Johns retrospective at NY MOMA?This book captures the essence of an American Michaelangelo.Subjective? You bet!If you have even the slightest interest in modern art your library is not complete without this retrospective. The many color and b&w photographs are superb, and it is accompanied by a solid chronology of Mr. Johns's life.Emphasis is on original works, but includes a good selection of more important lithographs (I recommend the prints Catalog Raisonne by ULAE if you want a complete reference work in this area).A tour de force by Varnedoe and his editing team! ... Product Description
Using foam core, hot glue, plywood, steel, scavenged street lumber, asphalt, a radar gun, liquor, turntables and LPs, Tom Sachs has built a 4,000-square-foot installation that links the idealistic modernism of Le Corbusier with the commercialized modernism of McDonald's. Remote-control cars and their racetrack form the connective tissue that binds the disparate parts of Nutsy's together, from the ghetto and modernist art park to the bong-hit station and piss station. Representing the culmination of Tom Sachs's studio activity over the past two years, Nutsy's was originally inspired by Le Corbusier's 1952 Unité d'Habitation housing block--a massive 12-story structure which has come to symbolize both the integrity of modernism as well as its subsequent corruption. In thinking about modernism's ideals, Sachs--ever the bricoleur--was driven to explore its other side. Modernism and bricolage act as a kind of foil for each other in Nutsy's, with the resourcefulness of bricolage standing in contrast to the grandiosity of modernism.Edited by John G. Product Description
1498. Sebastian Cabot age fifteen, can only wait and wonder. His famous father has abandoned him at home in Bristol, England, but has taken the boy's older and younger brothers, Ludovico and Sancio, on his second voyage in search of the Asian mainland. On his first journey, sailing north across the Western Ocean in 1497, John Cabot had discovered the New Found Land. He returned to England a hero.

Five years earlier, Spain had given Christopher Columbus a similar welcome. He had found Asia, he claimed. And by a southern route.

Cabot was skeptical and set out to the north again to prove his old friend a fraud.

But silence followed.

Now, Sebastian and history are confronted with a tantalizing mystery. What has become of Cabot's second endeavor? Letters to the boy from fourteen-year-old Sancio tell of a fearsome storm and its aftermath. They, and the surprising climax to Sebastian's and Sancio's shared story, make for unforgettable voyaging. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic and entertaining!!
I think that Henry Garfield did an absolutely perfect job wrighting this book. This book hints that Columbus, Cabot's childhood friend, really wasn't as fearless and daring as history books insist.According to this book, Cabot was much more intent on knowing, without a doubt, that the land he reached was, in fact, Asia.Columbus, finding land after crossing only half the distance to Asia, immediately wished to end the voyage.Knowing that he hadn't found Asia, yet not willing to return home a failure, he told the queen that he had found a string of islands off of Asia's coast. Cabot, reading the signs that Columbus showed, knew that he hadn't really found Asia.He knew that if he left, proved Columbus a lier, and then returned home to King Henry, he would become famous!Putting this into mind he left for Asia.
While Cabot leaves to find Asia, he leaves his middle son, Sebastian, at home.Sebastian, jealous of his father's occupation, becomes a river pilot.Sebastian learns a lot about Columbus and the world around him while his father is gone.If you want to know more, read the book to find out...

5-0 out of 5 stars The realistic possibilities of John Cabot's voyage and crew
The early explorers faced oceans of unknown terrors when they set sail to look for a shorter route to the Asian mainland. In 1492 Christopher Columbus thought he might have discovered Asia. But his rival and friend, John Cabot, felt that Columbus had not found a southern route to Asia. Based upon study, calculations and his own explorations, Cabot set out in 1497 to possibly prove his old rival wrong and to find this route himself.

When Cabot leaves Bristol, England, he takes his two sons, Ludovico and Sancio. He leaves 15-year-old Sebastian behind to care for the explorer's patient wife, Mattea. While Sebastian resents being left behind, he finds comfort in the letters he begins to receive from Sancio. The letters are filled with the long days of boredom and also some of the excitement as they embark into less explored areas. However, the letters stop abruptly and everyone is left to wonder what has happened. The only information they get comes through rumor and gossip as sailors come and go in the busy port. History sheds no light on this last voyage of John Cabot, but through the skillful storytelling skills of Henry Garfield, we catch a glimpse of what might have happened to this group of daring and brave explorers.

The letters to Sebastian from Sancio continue to be written but are not mailed, and it is this clever twist that allows readers to follow an intriguing path of the sailors' fates. Sancio, who is skilled in languages, writes to his brother that there is unrest among the men. This unrest possibly comes from two things: they feel that they have reached an Asian coastline, so it is time to return, and they are lonely for female company. "I think the sight of the native women has reminded some of the men of the loneliness of sea travel. There were two fights today." Sancio continues to assure his brother that he feels his father has discovered an important land mass from England.

"When we return to England, Sebastian, we will bring with us the certainty that a great mass of land, reachable by ship from the shores of Europe, does indeed lie in the Western Ocean. It is Father's discovery, and he will become famous for it. I daresay the world as we know it will never be the same."

The political maneuverings, the intrigues and deceptions are all captured in the rush of adventures that flow throughout this book. Henry Garfield presents a realistic picture of the possible horrors and heartbreaks that might have been experienced by Cabot's crew. Clipper ship tales are quite popular these days, and this exciting story of John Cabot's last voyage is sure to be enjoyed for its insights and wonderful historical pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly detailed stories worth a look for sure
Glenn Blake is not well known, but gosh I wish he were. The stories in this slim volume opened up worlds for me that I never knew existed. The geography is the obvious definition of the worlds I am talking about, but also the characters. They are fresh, dynamic, and always a bit quirky, though not enough to make them unbelievable. They are perfect people, if there can be such a thing. They argue, they hold grudges, and they live without restraint, but it is these things that make them able to interact with their severe geographical settings.

This is by far the best collection of stories I have read this year.Glenn Blake is an artist of much importance, and I can only hope that he continues to write and produce such beautifully rendered stories.Don't hold the thinness of this volume against the writer. The stories in here breathe new life into the short story form, and it is very rare for an author to do that in their first published collection.

Bravo Mr. Blake, and please don't stop writing.Mr. Blake's gift is one that I hope all of you will explore and enjoy.

Happy reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Masterful
This is a beautiful, haunting collection of stories about a part of the country I have no connection with, yet Blake brings me there, sits me down and says, "Look around." I didn't want to leave. Buy this book and read it again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real writer, real stories
Terrific short stories about things that matter written in a prose that knows that language might be music. Forget Franzen, buy this one instead. The only thing not first-rate about this book is the type-face, which is weirdly small. What were they thinking?Buy it anyway.

4-0 out of 5 stars A collection of treasures
To read the short stories in Glenn Blake's Drowned Moon is to swim through a subterranean town like the one in his story "Chocolate Bay," just below the surface of the narrative. These are compelling stories, haunted by the unconscious life of the characters. Blake makes the subtext of their lives palpable by seamlessly interweaving character and setting--swamps and bayous, houses with back porches, dogs in the yards. The exquisite light and color of this world is grounded by the down-to-earth people and their alligators, trucks, fishing, kids. One of the most accomplished stories is "Hazard," about old rivalries between two brothers, with an ending all the more satisfying for taking the reader so completely by surprise. Some of these stories will break your heart, even as Blake's comic sensibility makes you laugh. This is a collection of treasures--literary and humane--not to be missed.

4-0 out of 5 stars personal
I happen to know Glenn personally, and this is a very solid example of his work. The first story is especially good. His work is strongly steeped in Deep Southern culture, and well written.I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in the forefront of American short fiction, expecially those concerned with this near floundering facet of contemporary art.

Nothin' says lovin' like short fiction in the oven. ... Read more

Product Description
Come face-to-face with 22 arresting duotone etchings: the most recent ''portraits'' by British artist Glenn Brown. This oversized exhibition catalogue is printed on heavy coated stock and features striking, fullbleed endpapers. On display in 2009 at Karsten Schubert in London, Brown's etchings were composed over portraiture by Urs Graf, Rembrandt, and Lucien Freud. Engaging with concepts of duplication and appropriation, the complex, beautifully layered portraits are at once recognizable and completely unfamiliar. An essay by John-Paul Stonard, contributing editor of The Burlington Magazine, applauds Brown's work as a brilliant and bold reaction to the 19th-century tradition of copying the work of the ''Old Masters'' as a learning tool ...
