Product Description
Your roadmap to becoming the CEO of your own job and a leader for organizational change. Argues that the responsibility for renewing the vital bond of trust and commitment is far too important a task to be left to senior management, and shows how you can secure your own future--and the future of your organization--by responding actively, creatively, and effectively to the new demands of the organization in flux. Demonstrates why now--more than ever--we must take responsibility for becoming leaders of change rather than waiting for our organizations to take the first step.

Dennis T. Jaffe, Cynthia D. Scott, and Glenn R. Tobe draw on their extensive consulting experience with corporate executives and managers of such leading organizations as IBM, Pacific Bell, General Mills, The Gap, National Semiconductor, and Estee Lauder to demonstrate how to: * create a new employee empowerment contract * define the values and vision that will guide you to a new sense of mastery in life and work * develop a committed, productive workforce across the organization * invest in the future by designing work groups and systems that develop the new skills and capabilities required in yourself, in others, and in the organization.

Product Description

Although he is perhaps better known as a poet, Duncan Campbell Scott's many short stories are worthy of attention for their quiet power and enduring readability. This volume brings together a selection of stories that range across many diverse settings: a typical village of nineteenth-century Quebec, a genteel household in the Ottawa of the 1870s, and the isolation of an Indian village on the north short of Lake Superior, among others.

Product Description
The more you know about classical music, the more you love it. Now, thanks to Classical Music For Dummies, you can achieve a whole new level of insight into both the composers and the compositions that have made classical music one of the great accomplishments of humankind.

Classical Music For Dummies doesn't assume that you have a degree in musicology -- or even that you took a course in music appreciation. Rather, the multimedially gifted David Pogue and renowned conductor Scott Speck explain classical music in terms you can understand, and they describe musical elements so that you can hear them for yourself.

A reference you can dip into at any point, Classical Music For Dummies covers such topics as

  • The various forms that classical music takes -- from symphonies to string quartets
  • What goes on behind the scenes and on stage to fill a concert hall with great classical music
  • How to recognize, by sight and by sound, the many instruments that make up an orchestra
  • The nuts and bolts of classical music -- from rhythm to harmonic progression
Plus, Classical Music For Dummies comes complete with a CD containing over 60 minutes of masterpieces compiled especially for the book. The CD also includes a demo version of the Angel/EMI Classics For DummiesTM multimedia interface to try out on your Windows-based PC or Macintosh computer.Amazon.com Review
In a time when school music classes (if they exist at all)teach their students the finer points of the themes from TheTwilight Zone and Jaws instead of real music; whenclassical radio stations are converted to Lite Rock or switched to a"top 100" classical jukebox format; and when even churchesincreasingly favor banal "Jesus Is My Boyfriend"-style slopinstead of Bach, Mozart, and Vaughn Williams, classical music maylegitimately be seen as an endangered cultural species. Enter ScottSpeck and David Pogue, who take out the unnecessary mystery, and offeran easy-to-swallow quickie education, ranging from Gregorian chants tocontemporary composers such as John Adams and John Corigliano. If youcan't tell an oboe from a bassoon, there's also a dandy guide to theinstruments of the orchestra, and once you're through that informationyou'll know the difference between a concerto and a sonata. Best ofall is the introduction to music theory, which actually makes adaunting subject seem easy. It's all supported by a helpful enhancedcompact disc (it works in your CD-ROM drive; it plays on your stereo'sCD player) containing more than an hour of representative musicaltidbits from good EMI recordings. Although the tone is unremittinglyflippant and the jokes are, for the most part, pretty bad,Classical Music for Dummies is one of the better works in thisseries, and really does provide a useful reference for a subject toooften seen as arcane. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
The authors were informative, and kept it interesting and real, throughout.
They used just enough humor, interspersed with many facts, which prompted me to
either look up the term, listen to the music on UTube, or look to see if my public
library had MORE books on the particular composer they would mention.
I highly, highly recommend this book, for anyone who loves classical music, but doesn't
have much knowledge about the basics, and would like to learn more.
I even emailed the authors, and both were pleasant, and helped me find more out about
classical music history.
This book also comes in audiobook form.

This books deserves a BRAVO!

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised
This was one of those I sort of HAD to read ,and expected to be boring. But I learned more about music in the process, not just classical music. It just kept surprising me with it's entertaining, yet informative stuff I never expected. Maybe it was just something I needed at the time, because (if you read my other reviews) I'm usually VERY critical.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good
These same authors wrote Opera for Dummies, a book I enjoyed very much.So I gave this one a try too.

The pluses:
I enjoyed the sections on the composers, their lives, and their notable works, as well as the section on the instruments in the orchestra and the personality types that play them.I also liked that the authors go into the definitions and structures of symphonies, sonatas, concertos, etc.

The minuses:
Much of the material in this book is identical to that in Opera for Dummies. But then of course you can't blame the authors for not re-writing the biographies of the composers for each separate book. But the thing I was most disappointed in was the very large musical theory section in this book.I felt this would be more suited to a "Music for Dummies" book. It's not necessarily necessary to understand music theory in order to appreciate classical music.I would have liked more biographies of lesser known composers; or more discussions of particularly famous works of classical music.

All in all I appreciate the approachable nature of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
After liking classical music for 30 years, this book has made listening to and understanding classical music even more enjoyable.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best dummies books ever
I've read many of the dummies books and Classical Music for Dummies is now my favorite. Prior to that, DOS for dummies was the best that I had read and that was back in 1998. This book is packed with great info and tons of listening suggestions. Thanks to this book I'm listening to Debussy's La Mer right now and I probably would have never known about this wonderful piece of music had I not bit the bullet and bought this book. Don't listen to the reviews that say that the humor is overpowering. Those reviews are coming from stuffy snobs that have no sense of humor. The humor in this book makes it an absolute page turner. Its fun when you're reading serious material for five or ten minutes and then along comes a zinger. The nicest surprise about this book is that I learned far more than I thought I would being that I have a pretty solid musical background being a guitar player. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Microsoft Exchange 2007 SP 1
helpful with updates. i bought the first Edition and could have gotten by with it but SP 1 brings a few more tricks into the mix so i figured i should have it.is it ESSENTIAL, probably not but if it is your primary job, i would advise it.get a PowerShell book too, there is one i recommend Professional Windows Powershell for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1

[...]

it gives you pretty good info on how to use the commands.also i recommend going to Microsoft.com directly and finding their A-Z for Exchange PowerShell commands, you will be glad you did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review based on Windows PowerShell content
I just finished reviewing this book.I looked at it from the perspective of its Windows PowerShell content as I'm a Microsoft MVP who specializes in PowerShell scripting.

PowerShell is becoming more and more important.Under the covers, PowerShell is the basis of all administrative tasks done in the Exchange 2007 Management Console.

PowerShell is new and can be intimidating. However, for anyone who wants to automate tasks and become more productive, they should start investing some time in learning PowerShell. The time will soon come where PowerShell will be the common scripting language used by all Microsoft server products.

What I like about this book is that it isn't too heavy on the PowerShell content, which is good for people new to the scripting language. Concepts are clearly presented, and then there's a small section on how to do the task in PowerShell with an example provided.

Apart from its PowerShell content, the book is very well laid out, and covers every aspect of Exchange that an administrator should know about. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Really Love this book!
I don't have children, but I found this in a children's asile in my local bookstore and I had to buy it! This is the book I have on my backyard picnic table right now and I read thru it daily and love it! It's NUMBER 1 on my list of books to read right now with summer here. The photos are wonderful; the small editorials are written so that anyone can understand them, and as an adult I don't see the "child -like" reading here, but rather a book that everyone can enjoy and learn from and all of Time Life Books are finely manufactured. For a book I'd rate them as "Excellent Quality" and suggest this along with the other's from this series would make a wonderful gift for children and adults alike. You'll learn alot about gardening, how to attract butterflies or hummingbirds to your backyard; wild flowering, A-Z, way too much to mention.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful lay-out makes this book a pleasure to read.
This book is beautifully designed and well organized.Full color photography enhances each page. It includes basic information on gardening with native plants, planning a garden, attracting birds, butterflies, and other wildlife to your yard.Photographs and desriptions of plants and trees, organized by geographic location, are accompanied by maps, field notes, tips, and drawings of animals prefered by each.Lots of references are included in the back. It may be geared more towards the layperson than the expert, but this book really opened my eyes to the possibilities of gardening.Gardening is not just picking pretty flowers anymore! Natural Gardening a joy to browse through and to read. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars look elswhere
This book is very thin on where you need it most. For instance, only the very very basics of SCR is mentioned. They do not even mention how to restore SCR. Try another book. Add-ADPermission, a command that is commonly used in Exchange, is not even found. A thick book, but nothing really covered well. Maybe a good book if you are brand new to exchange, and want something to read from cover to cover. You will be left in the dark if you use this a companion.

4-0 out of 5 stars E2K7 Admin Companion - essential
working with Exchange 2007 (E2K7) since July '07 and Exchange (5.5 and 2003) since1999, i am somewhat familiar with Microsoft's Mail products.the E2K7 takes it to another level and this book gives you the info you need. is it the best and the only reference you will need? no, certainly not but it IS a good place to start.PowerShell is very pervasive and the more you know about it the easier your life will be as the EMC (Exchange Mangement Console) is not the same thing you got in the last version Exchange 2003's ESM (Exchange System Management). my suggestion is to pick up a PowerShell SP1 book, i reviewed a great one recently and i have about 5 so far.
Bottom line, good book to have but you will need others especially concerning PowerShell. i own about a dozen of the Admin Companions and their Pocket Consultants as well. ... Read more

Product Description
The pioneer astronauts who took America into space tell their personal stories about the challenges they faced -- their fears, joys, friendships, and successes.

Chosen from hundreds of crackerjack pilots for their fitness, intelligence, and courage, the original Mercury Seven astronauts risked their lives to cross the space frontier. In We Seven, they take readers behind the scenes to show them their training, technology, and teamwork, and to share personal stories, including the lighter moments of their mission. They bring readers inside the Mercury program -- even into the space capsules themselves. We Seven straps you in with the astronauts and rockets you along for the ride.

Share Alan Shepard's exhilaration as he breaks through the earth's atmosphere. Endure moments of panic with Gus Grissom when his hatch blows, stranding him in the open sea. Race with John Glenn as he makes split-second life-or-death maneuvers during reentry, and feel his relief when he emerges safe but drenched with sweat.

Despite such heroism, Project Mercury was more than the story of individual missions. It defined the manned space flight program to come, from Gemini through Apollo. In We Seven, America's original astronauts tell us firsthand -- as only they can -- about the space program they pioneered, and share with us the hopes and dreams of the U.S. at the dawn of a new era. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The last solo space heroes
`We Seven' is a period piece. It was first published in 1962 and has been relatively hard to find for several years except as a used book. My one and only complaint about this reissue is that there is no new introduction - it is presented simply as it was published, which for some might be confusing; i.e. writing about the seven astronauts as if they were all still alive. There is an introduction by 'Life' and some black and white photographs and a detailed index.
What it does show is all the hope and naiveté of the time and the men involved, the mind set of the military and NASA then and all the hope and pride that went with it. It is indeed interesting to read again or for the first time. There is much emphasis on John Glenn, he seems to give longer and more detailed interviews. That is also what is fascinating about this account, it is the astronaut's words themselves; although one should be aware if you cannot tell that these are the public interviews. There is none of the gossip of private lives or complaints of operational conditions. Even the stories of failures, Gus Grissom's loss of his space capsule is dealt with as a disappointing accident as it was presented at the time: "at least we did not hide information like the Russians did concerning their space program".
Each of the seven tell of how they were chosen, how they worked together and were a team that brought America into space. These men, both the astronauts themselves and the NASA technicians that launched them are passing out of our lives. Only two of the original seven are left John Glenn and Scott Carpenter.

There are many books on the astronauts, many wrote their own individual stories, but this stands out as a singularity, one that was written in the pride of a moment, before Gemini, before Apollo; before the tragic fire that took Gus Grissom, Chaffe and White's life and before the destruction of two space shuttles that made many question NASA and the space program. The stories of the last solo space heroes' time of triumph still deserves to be heard and read. ... Read more
