Product Description

George Grant (1918-1988) is widely regarded as one of Canada's most influential philosophers and political theorists. His best-known work, Lament for a Nation (1965), presented a radical reinterpretation of Canadian history and inspired a surge of nationalist sentiment across the country. Along with Grant's other books, it addressed the major cultural shifts and dilemmas of our age, and introduced several generations of students to the basic questions of political philosophy.

This study aims to guide the reader toward a clearer understanding of Grant's thought. Focusing on his six short books and some of his most significant articles and speeches, Hugh Donald Forbes provides both an introduction to and an overview of Grant's career and his many contributions to the fields of political science, philosophy, religion, and Canadian studies. Throughout Forbes sheds light on some of Grant's more contradictory and complex ideas, and provides an assessment of his impact on the Canadian political and cultural landscape. Forbes also relates Grant's work to that of three disparate and controversial European thinkers - Martin Heidegger, Leo Strauss, and Simone Weil - providing contexts and comparisons outside of the strictly Canadian framework in which he is normally situated. Comprehensive and lucidly written, George Grant: A Guide to His Thought is an invaluable resource for students, general readers, and academic specialists alike.

Product Description
Mel Watkins is an iconic figure in the development of the 'new' political economy. Since the 1960s he has combined scholarly writing with political activism for a range of issues, from Canada's economic dependency on the US to the role of social democratic parties to aboriginal rights. This collection brings together Watkins' most important scholarly articles. In "Staples and Beyond" Watkins addresses the "staple thesis" of Canadian economic and political development and, in particular, the effort to extend Harold Innis' work by giving more explicit consideration to class relations and the role of the state. He considers the historical nature of Canada's economic dependency in relation to tariff barriers, foreign investment, the multi-national corporation, and wide-ranging free trade and investment agreements. He also examines the evolution of economics and political economy as academic disciplines and reflects on the relationship between intellectual scholarship and political activism.Taken together, the papers in this volume provide an invaluable contribution to our understanding of the nature of the Canadian economy and the political options for forging a more independent and equitable country. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars If you know Photoshop/Illustrator, this book can help you switch to web design tool
There are not so many books about Fireworks and this is really a shame because Fireworks is a really good tool - take some Photoshop , add some Paintshop Pro and Illustrator and you get an excellent tool for web design.
This book is meant for anyone who already entered in the world of web design and had experience with Photoshop or Illustrator. This book can be reallyuseful to all interaction designers and Flex/AIR developer because it can help them improve visual experience of their' web applications.
When you start reading this book you'll realize this book is not for dummies. First chapters give an overview what can you do with Fireworks and which tools/palettes/effects can be used for improvingyour working skills. Don't expect many details about these tools, you will get guidelines where to find asolution for your problem".

As I said, this book is dedicated to web designer and how to improve your work with bitmaps and vectors, how to create a page header, how to use pickers and selectors for both types of graphics. There is a quiet interesting chapter about creating standard please wait"- Ajax animation. I'm sure this chapter can help you build your own image for this purpose.

It the next few chapters you will learn more about creating visual prototypes of Flex/AIR application, Flex skinning and exporting and preparing your design for web developers. Since latest Fireworks CS4 version and CS5 version supportFXG export, you can try experimenting with new information and how to use it in this new environment.

Overall, it's not bad idea to learn more about setting your graphics for final web layout. Flex skinning topics are little bit out-dated because new Flex 4 component framework(Spark) has a different architecture but you can use these fresh information for creating layout protypes, exporting them to FXG and creating new Spark skins in just a few minutes.

Since there's Fireworks CS5 on the market, I expect we will have a new edition of this book available in our bookshops.
I have to say, this book has three really good case studies - how to create a web layout for your blog, how to create aweb design and how to refactor it for typical CSS template. Third case study is about creating a decent web shop layout - pretty useful tutorial.
Summary - really useful book for all web designers who want to use a tool for web designers.

4-0 out of 5 stars fireworks rules for web production
Historically, web designers who create "eye catching" graphics referred to Adobe Photoshop as the tool of choice. This may be true for many designers, but Fireworks CS4 appears to be THE production tool for WEB 2.0 build and deploy. This is my opinion after working through this excellent book profiling ALL the TOOLS and STOCK ITEMS that you get in Fireworks CS4. If you want to BUILD an interface for a website, this tool is the place to start and this book will walk you through ALL the techniques and tips you need to create eye catching, functional web layouts.
The book is very thoughtfully arranged. The content of this book covers the tools, sample work projects, visual effects, integrating with Flash and Flex, two case studies and much more. This is THE book to purchase and complete before proceeding with any studies you may be contemplating to learn the Flash application. All your assets will be easily created by Fireworks CS4 and ready to pack into Flash to add the animation and interactivity.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for any Firework user
Like all the books in the Foundation series, this book is an good resource for those who want to start using Fireworks and even for those who have already used who will find valuable information within its pages.

This book is divided into three parts:

Learning Fireworks: This part shows the most basic concepts of this application as the implementation and integration with other applications CS4, the work with bitmaps and vectors and the optimization process and export for web.

Using Fireworks: This part explains the creation of common tasks such as using filters and creating animations. A big surprise of this chapter are the most advanced topics as creating and editing skins for Flex, the development of prototypes using AIR, the use of extensions and the use of JavaScript and Flash to automate tasks and extend Fireworks.

Fireworks in Action: This part shows step by step 3 of interesting case studies: a blog, a navigation system that uses CSS and a website prototype for e-commerce.

In general I like about this book:

- The explanation of all the concepts are very clear.
- Use large images which is very important for the screenshots since it facilitates the reading of menus and commands.

I do not like failure to include sample files which is of great importance since it facilitates and encourages them to practice the concepts read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unhelpful to those who know Photoshop and Illustrator but not code.
This is the first time I have posted a negative review, but because there are so few reviews on this book and so few books on Fireworks CS 4, I felt it was important for people to understand what they were getting withthis pricey and thin book. This book will not help you unless you already know how to write code (maybe not even then, since I can't get past the code speak and other assumptions this book makes). The author should not have named this book Foundation Fireworks CS4.

What you do get: a basic overview of the graphic tools within Fireworks - not such big news for people already familiar with Photoshop and Illustrator.

What you don't get: helpful basic information about how to use Fireworks as a Web Tool - not even how to create a button.Sure, they give you an overview, but this is so vaguely described that one would not be able to do it, unless they already knew how to do it...They do go into great detail about how to apply effects, filter, gradients etc to a button, but what about how to actually create one?

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
I've been really pleased with Foundation Fireworks CS4 and constantly use the book as a reference for inspiration and motivation! ... Read more

Product Description
Book contains the screenplay, exclusive material aboutthe making of the film, and still photos from the film as well as linedrawings. This book is the tie-in to the new film NottingHill, which is set to open in June, starring Julia Roberts andHugh Grant, by the screenwriter of Four Weddings and a Funeral.Julia Roberts stars as Anna Scott, "the great movie star of ourtime-an ideal- the perfect star and woman", and Hugh Grant is William, gentle an assuming, who owns a small travel bookshop in the NottingHill section of London.Theirs is an unlikely, awkward alliance thatwill make you roar with laughter, cringe and cry with pleasure.Notting Hill is an intelligent, uncynical love story, just whatwe need for the end of the 90's.Amazon.com Review
Who hasn't ever dreamed of meeting a movie star, falling in love, and discovering the feelings are mutual? Richard Curtis's Notting Hill is a funny, enchanting, lighthearted take on just such a fairy-tale premise. Curtis's screenplay of the film--which stars Hugh Grant as an ordinary British bookstore owner and Julia Roberts as the world-famous actress who waltzes into his store and his life--makes for an effective and enjoyable read, chock full of the snappy, witty dialogue that made Curtis's Four Weddings and a Funeral such a hit. Fans of the movie will be pleased to relive such moments as Roberts's and Grant's first embarrassing meetings and her appearance at a small dinner party for Grant's sister, where she turns the situation upside-down. On the page, the story is charming if a bit slight (it doesn't feature a rowdy and riotous supporting cast á la Four Weddings), but as wish fulfillment and romantic comedy, it's irresistible and will leave a smile on your face to rival that of our heroine. In addition to the finished script, the book includes scenes that didn't make the final cut (great ones, too--it's too bad they won't be seen); loads of color stills from the movie; an engaging introduction by Curtis detailing the genesis of the film; and an affable if offbeat afterword from Hugh Grant himself. --Mark Englehart ... 5-0 out of 5 stars As Good as the Movie!
A Very Good Screenplay! Like it like the movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book!
This is one of my favorite movies, and incidentally, my favorite screenplay! It's an excellent representation of the movie--many full-color pictures of the best scenes in the movie. It even includes story boards, cast and unit lists, and an afterword by Hugh Grant. The photographs were taken by Clive Coote, one of Great Britain's most famous photographers.

Almost everything I'd seen before I bought the book only included pictures of Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant--this book is different! It doesn't leave out Spike or any of the other small but memorable characters.

Anyone who's a fan of the movie will love this exquisite book. It gets an A+ from me!

4-0 out of 5 stars Movies written by writers are worth reading
I'm a sucker for this guy. No, not that guy, not Hugh, but Richard Curtis. And Tim McInnerny. I liked the movie, of course--otherwise I wouldn't havebothered reading the screenplay--but the screenplay was better than themovie. Edited-out scenes, alternate storylines, a very funny afterword, lovely pictures. Plus the book's printed on just the most wonderful paper.I'm a sucker for good paper.

3-0 out of 5 stars All hail British humor
"~This simple story about a travel bookstore owner and a famous actress is a romantic-comedy that's actually funny! appreciated with the written screenplay, which is where this hilarious movie formed from.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smile your way through the Script
I enjoyed the movie greatly, but it was reading the script which really made me appreciate the sheer genius behind it all.Kudos to Richard Curtis! It is amazing how much he manages to get into a scene - everythingWORKS, to tug at the heart strings or strike the funny bone.

The scriptreveals a few of the artistic choices that had to be made in the process ofcreating the script and the movie; however, this is a very polished endproduct - definately a last draft (with a few choice bits of scenes thatdid not make the cut at the end) and perfectly co-ordinated with filmstills and photographs, all on luxurious glossy paper.

However, it isamazing how, having watched the film and knowing the charactrers, it ispossible to visualise scenes in your head while reading the script - anespecial plus for the left out scenes.I am now dying to compare myimagination with the director's cut, which I have been told might beavailable on the DVD version. ... Hugh John Grant (born 9 September 1960) is an English actor and film producer. He has received a Golden Globe Award, a BAFTA, and an Honorary César. His movies have also earned more than $2.4 billion from 25 theatrical releases worldwide. Grant achieved international stardom after playing alter ego of writer Richard Curtis in the sleeper hit Four Weddings and a Funeral (1994). He used this breakthrough role as a frequent cinematic persona during the 1990s to deliver comic performances in mainstream films like Mickey Blue Eyes (1999) and Notting Hill (1999). By the turn of the century, he had established himself as a leading man skilled with a satirical comic talent. In recent years, Grant has expanded his oeuvre with critically acclaimed turns as a cad in Bridget Jones's Diary (2001), About A Boy (2002), and American Dreamz (2006). He has been criticised by students of cinema for putting emphasis on nuanced mannerisms, for the predictability of his movies, and for his unwillingness to stretch as an actor . Elizabeth Jane Hurley (born 10 June 1965) is an English model and actress who became known as a girlfriend of Hugh Grant in the 1990s. Born inBasingstoke, Hurley was a struggling actress in 1987, when she met Grant while working on a Spanish production called Remando Al Viento. In 1994, Grant became the focus of worldwide media attention due to the global box office success of his film Four Weddings and a Funeral. Hurley accompanied him to the film's London premiere and was noted for wearing a plunging black Versace dress held together with gold safety pins. According to The Guardian, Hurley was "then known as 'Hugh Grant's girlfriend,' now known as 'Hugh Grant's former girlfriend,'" due to their high-profile romantic relationship that ended in 2000. The highlight of Hurley's professional life has been her association with the cosmetics company Estée Lauder. The company gave Hurley her first modeling job at the age of 29 and has used her as a model for its products, especially perfumes such as Sensuous, Intuition, and Pleasures, since 1995. ...
