Preceded by Michigan Agricultural College: The Evolution of a Land-Grant Philosophy, 1855 1925, this second volume explores the Hannah years.

Today, Michigan State University cannot be separated from the enormous influence of one man, John Hannah, who steered its growth, academic programs, influence, and international prestige. During his tenure as Michigan State College and Michigan State University president, the land-grant institution grew from an enrollment of just over 6,000 to just under 40,000. This dramatic increase necessitated an extensive building program. The curriculum was also upgraded and modified. In 1944, the Basic College, a national prototype, was established to provide instruction to incoming students. Other innovations included Adult Education (1951), the International Program (1950s), MSU Oakland University (1959), and the creation of a medical program (1960s). As the twelfth president of Michigan State University, John Alfred Hannah served from 1941 to 1969. Dogma, Theology, Christian Doctrine
Our Legacy- The History of Christian doctrine written by John D. Hannah is a comparison and contrast of different trains of thought. What is the meaning of God's word, who God is, and the will of God. The presentation of the development of Christian thought through the last two thousand years is clear and respectful to the authors contrary views. Different aspects of Christian theology are developed through the presentations of the differing views. One learns why Roman Catholic thought and evangelical protestantism differ greatly. To a lesser extent Greek Orthodox.Reading this book an evangelical and Catholic will develop an understanding about modern liberal theology. The modernist perspective is a relative small part of this work when covering the 1750 to 1900 time period.(Albert Schweitzer, Friedrich Schleirmacher,Charles Finney),All in clear presentation. John Hannah developed differing perspectives about the Authority about the bible, The Trinity, The person, of Christ, The work of Christ, Salvation, The Church, and End Times. The book covers six time periods of thought and seven subjects, so all perspectives are kept to a couple page. A great read, a great starting point to understand theology.

This is a must have for any student of the Bible. Hannah brilliantly summarizes church history and organizes his book around key doctrines.It is interesting, fresh, conservative and extremely helpful for spiritual growth. Useful but CD lacking
Although the charts are useful, the CD would be much more useful if the comments in the printed charts were in the powerpoint material as "Notes".In order for this to be completely useful as a training tool, those printed comments for each chart must be typed into the powerpoint slides on the notes pages for each slide.

A Must-Have for Students and Teachers of Church History
With many images to help the visual learner and clear explanations for all students of church history, this book is a wonderful asset to a personal, academic, or church library. The CD includes all the charts, making it an easy-to-use resource for teachers. Highly recommended!

I feel this book of charts is a bit oversimplified. The CD is useful. If I had looked thorugh the book prior to purchase I probably would not have purchased it. With that said it is worth the money. ... Read more

This is an outstanding series on Christianity.Subjects are presented in tables and charts to summarize the massive amount of information and give one an overview.This is the place to start.Well done.

Very Interesting
A young woman treads the hallways of the Union hospital with a mission to serve the young men that are fighting in the bloodiest war seen on this fair land of ours.While her son is out fighting the battle, her battle is at the hospital attempting to provide better care for the soldiers.

Excellent content, I just wasn't too crazy about the format that it was wrote in.

A Woman who Cared...
Hannah Ropes kept a diary for only one year during the time she served as a nurse in the Civil War.She actually supervised Louisa Mae Alcott and was responsible for manyof the reforms in the hospital where she worked.She was a well-spoken woman who was also not afraid to stand up to her male supervisors.She cared very much for, "her boys" as she called the patients she worked over day and night.She is one of those women who has not been given credit and has not been well-known until recently.Her untimely death ended a daring career as a feminist and take-charge Civil War Nurse.This is fascinating and inspirational reading.

I'm mad at Ms. Ropes. She should have written more!
Hannah Ropes was a feminist of her day. Yet she believed a wounded soldier needed a motherly woman's touch. These letters are a great gift and the editing job on the book is superb. Ropes worked herself to death in Union hospitals in Washington D.C. The Union lost a good nurse and history lost a terrific writer. (In fact Ropes was a writer before the war.) She battled anyone who got in the way of good health care including going all the way to and old friend, the Secretary of War to roust out a thief in the hospital system. She poignantly describes the wounded wrecks who passed her way and the efforts made by those who cared are poignantly described as well. Ropes writing abilities were great. They are aided markedly by the brief biography of her which serves as introduction to the book. Through it, we come to know the iron will of the woman which was so beneficial to her as a nurse but which she herself down-played. For any who value "first person history" this book is a gem! ...
