2-0 out of 5 stars What in the world?
This is by far the worst textbook I have ever used. Each chapter has tons of information, which is a good thing, dont get me wrong though. However, I found the book is written in a very unorganzied way: information are everywhere, the authors introduce a topic and lead you to nowhere. I just have a hard time to understand the main theme/focus of each chapter. This could be my own problem (i.e. being dumb and stupid,) but nothing like this ever happened to me before.
By the way, I think the older version is actually better written than the current edition. The 4th edition has a clear cut between sections and better flow from one to another.
Why do I have to pay almost $100 on a new book while I need to read the older version for better understanding?

Product Description

Che Guevara is one of the most controversial and iconic figures in recent memory and is still a hero to many. Che Guevara: A Biography provides a balanced and engaging introduction to the famous revolutionary leader. Based on original research, the biography reveals how Che's early life prepared him for leadership in the Cuban Revolution. It also explores his revolutionary activities in Africa and Bolivia, as well as the circumstances surrounding his tragic death on October 9, 1967.

More than just a record of events, the book cogently examines Che's contributions to the theory and tactics of guerrilla warfare, his ideas about imperialism and socialism, and his enduring political legacy. It includes original information on the 1997 discovery of the hidden remains of his body and on the celebration of his life and ideals by the socialist regime in Cuba. And it looks at the reasons why leftist political leaders, movements, and governments in Latin America and the Caribbean still pay homage to this charismatic man.

This is a well designed book, the packaing, feel and printing are excellent quality. Not all of the drawings are reproduced in color but, for the price I can't complain. Product Description
Ever since public interest necessitated a dramatic expansion of the government's involvement in the protection of public health, the consumer and the environment two decades ago, a powerful counter-movement to curtail socio-economic regulation gained momentum. The authors assess the long-term consequences of the Reagan administration's attempts at regulatory reform through an in-depth study of how two of the biggest regulatory agencies--the Federal Trade Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency--were affected by these reforms. The new Second edition continues the coverage of American regulatory politics through the Bush administration, concluding that twelve years of aggressive deregulation have ultimately foundered. ... Product Description
This concise undergraduate textbook brings together Earth and biological sciences to explore the co-evolution of the Earth and life over geological time. Written for a one-semester course, it explores the Earth system at and above the surface of the Earth by examining the interactions and feedback processes between the geosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. It also explains how the Earth's surface environment involves a complex interplay between these systems. Through a wealth of features and student questioning, the book allows students to understand how physical controls make our planet hospitable for life, investigate the processes of global change that operate on a range of timescales, understand important cross-disciplinary connections and explore how the whole Earth system has evolved. Finally, it assesses how and why the climate of the Earth has varied over geological time, and considers whether life itself is passive or an active agent for change. ... Read more

Product Description
The Orange County coast had its Joy Zone and its Fun Zone in the early decades of the 20th century. Knott's Berry Farm sprouted from a simple berry stand in Buena Park. The spot that would become Walt Disney's theme-park empire began as a citrus grove in Anaheim. Before long, Orange County was recognized as the nurturing ground for the growing amusement park industry. This book concerns the early history of such parks in the county east and south of Los Angeles, before high-tech digitization, when custom cars, enormous alligators, stunt planes, dolphin leaps, and movie stars' wax likenesses thrilled patrons. Some amusement parks have come and gone over a century of development, and some are still here, changing with the times to create new adventure and excitement for park goers. ... Read more

Product Description

More than 80% of college students are drinking. More than a third do drugs. For students struggling with substance abuse, temptations on campus—and stressors that can derail abstinence—run high. In response, several colleges and universities offer effective support in the form of recovery communities, which are more appropriate to campus settings and young adult development than traditional 12-step groups alone.

Substance Abuse Recovery in College explains in authoritative detail what collegiate recovery communities are, the types of services they provide, and their role in the context of campus life, with extended examples from Texas Tech University’s influential CSAR (Center for the Study of Addiction and Recovery) program. Using data from both conventional surveys and end-of-day daily Palm Pilot assessments as well as focus groups, the book examines community members’ experiences. In addition, the importance of a positive relationship between the recovery community and the school administration is emphasized.

Topics covered include:

  • The growing need for recovery services at colleges.
  • How recovery communities support abstinence and relapse prevention.
  • Who are community members and their addiction and treatment histories.
  • Daily lives of young adults in a collegiate recovery community.
  • Challenges and opportunities in establishing recovery communities on campus.
  • Building abstinence support into an academic curriculum.

This volume offers clear insights and up-close perspectives of importance to developmental and clinical child psychologists, social workers, higher education policymakers, and related professionals in human development, family studies, student services, college health care, and community services.

Product Description
This book is not a "how to" guide for those looking to break into the field of advanced planning but a "what's next" manual for already successful advanced planners who want to extend existing relationships with the ultra-affluent.With an aggregate of nearly $12 billion in assets, the "ultra-affluent" - individuals who have a net worth of at least $25 million dollars - are seeking cutting-edge financial expertise. Indeed, since the Internet bubble burst, the damage inflicted on the portfolios and psyches of the very wealthy only heightened their belief in the value of professional guidance.

Readers are offered a state-of-the-art perspective of the ultra-affluent - who they are and what they expect from their advisors. Also examined is the interpersonal skills, technical knowledge, and professional networks employed by leading advanced planners. The current competitive landscape is analyzed as more advisors and financial institutions make a bid for the ultra-affluent in an industry subject to ever-changing regulations and tax laws. Above all, Prince and Harris delineate the ways in which advisors can better serve and anticipate the advanced planning needs of their ultra-affluent clients. ... Read more

Product Description
Drawing upon more than 30 years of experience in working with statistics, Dr. Richard J. Harris has updated A Primer of Multivariate Statistics to provide a model of balance between how-to and why. This classic text covers multivariate techniques with a taste of latent variable approaches. Throughout the book there is a focus on the importance of describing and testing one's interpretations of the emergent variables that are produced by multivariate analysis.

This edition retains its conversational writing style while focusing on classical techniques. The book gives the reader a feel for why one should consider diving into more detailed treatments of computer-modeling and latent-variable techniques, such as non-recursive path analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, and hierarchical linear modeling. Throughout the book there is a focus on the importance of describing and testing one's interpretations of the emergent variables that are produced by multivariate analysis.

Product Description

Creeping Conformity, the first history of suburbanization in Canada, provides a geographical perspective ? both physical and social ? on Canada's suburban past. Shaped by internal and external migration, decentralization of employment, and increased use of the streetcar and then the automobile, the rise of the suburb held great social promise, reflecting the aspirations of Canadian families for more domestic space and home ownership.

After 1945 however, the suburbs became stereotyped as generic, physically standardized, and socially conformist places. By 1960, they had grown further away ? physically and culturally ? from their respective parent cities, and brought unanticipated social and environmental consequences. Government intervention also played a key role, encouraging mortgage indebtedness, amortization, and building and subdivision regulations to become the suburban norm. Suburban homes became less affordable and more standardized, and for the first time, Canadian commentators began to speak disdainfully of 'the suburbs,' or simply 'suburbia.' Creeping Conformity traces how these perceptions emerged to reflect a new suburban reality.

4-0 out of 5 stars shows how Canada became more like the USA
This book describes the evolution of Canadian suburbia. In the early 20th century, territory outside the limits of major cities was usually occupied by working-class shantytowns; these areas were not popular with the well-to-do because of the absence of basic municipal services such as water and streetcars. Some residents of these suburbs commuted long distances; others were able to commute to nearby industrial jobs because even in the early 20th century, heavy industry needed more land than central cities could usually provide and relocated to industrial suburbs.

Nevertheless, Canadian suburbs actually grew more slowly than cities for much of the early 20th century. To a greater extent than in the United States, cities rather than suburbs resisted city/suburb consolidation; major cities such as Toronto did not wish to pay the expenses of extending water and sewer into suburbs.

After World War II, Canada massively increased government interference in the housing market. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHA), much like American housing authorities, specified minimum street width and other standards that were required for federal support.(However, Harris doesn't really discuss these standards in detail; were they as sprawl-oriented as the standards set forth by U.S. housing agencies?)

Because such financing was available only for new housing, CMHA and other Canadian agencies implicitly favored movement to suburbs with lots of open land. And because CMHA standards made it impossible to build unsantiary, unserviced shantytowns, suburban housing became more expensive and less working-class.

The latter trend was bolstered towards the Canadian trend towards adopting zoning ordinances and comprehensive plans; these plans, like their American counterparts, tended to favor rigid separation of land uses, as well as higher standards of housing quality.

Ultimately, Canadian government finance and municipal land use regulation made Canadian suburbs somewhat more like American suburbs: affluent and car-dependent. ... Read more

Although it otherwise is an impressive and useful work, we were disappointed by lack of color photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Idaho
I have used other books in this series and they never dissappoint. There is far more here than you can do in any one vacation, but I like it for the full overview that you get of the entire state. Don't expect a lot of maps and directions, but do expect some neat "insider" tips and different travel recomendations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Informative
Having only been to Idaho three times (once for 10 minutes!) I can say that this book will undoubtedly help me plan my next much longer excursion to the great state of Idaho. The chapters cover sections of the state with details on various cities, what to do, where to eat, etc., all of which will be helpful. As with any book on this subject, some items may be out of date even as the book is printed, but I trust that the author's references to restaurants and lodging are dependable.Having looked at other books on Idaho, this one not only covers the hidden gems, I think it covers all the unhidden gems this state has to offer.Though I already admitted I'm no expert on Idaho, I found this book to be comprehensive enough for someone planning a two-week trip to explore this corner of the US.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful
This book is helpful. There are not a lot of Idaho-specific guidebooks, and this one is pretty comprehensive. One drawback is that it does not have any pictures. Idaho has some beautiful wilderness areas and a few pictures would greatly enhance this book.
