Product Description
Few women in America are as adored -- and accessible -- as Teri Hatcher. As the Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award-winner for her portrayal of ditzy divorcee Susan Mayer on ABC’s hit series Desperate Housewives, she’s attained a level of success late in her career (in Hollywood terms, anyway) that most women would kill for. But in real life, Teri deals with the same issues as so many women: divorce, single motherhood, bad dates, turning forty . . . So it’s no surprise that when Burnt Toast was published in hardcover, it received tremendous attention and went on to become a major national bestseller.

Full of Teri’s foibles and successes, unexpected vulnerability, andfrank openness (from looking in the refrigerator for Mr. Right tobeing told by her daughter’s pediatrician that she should datemore), Burnt Toast is a funny, intimate, uplifting portrait of one woman’s daily struggles and successes on the road to living an inspired life. ... Product Description
In the executive offices of the four major networks, sweeping changes are taking place and billions of dollars are at stake. Now Bill Carter, bestselling author of The Late Shift, goes behind the scenes to reveal the inner workings of the television industry, capturing the true portraits of the larger-than-life moguls and stars who make it such a cutthroat business.

In a time of sweeping media change, the four major networks struggle for the attention of American viewers increasingly distracted by cable, video games, and the Internet. Behind boardroom doors, tempers flare in the search for hit shows, which often get on the air purely by accident. The fierce competition creates a pressure-cooker environment where anything can happen . . .

• NBC’s fall from grace—Once the undisputed king of prime time, NBC plunged from first place to last place in the ratings in the course of a single season. What will be the price of that collapse—and who will pay it?

• CBS’s slow and steady race to the top—Unlike NBC, CBS, under the leadership of CEO, Leslie Moonves, engineered one of the most spectacular turnarounds in television history. But in this ruthless world, you’re only as good as last week’s ratings . . . .

• ABC’s surprising resurrection—Lost and Desperate Housewives—have brought ABC the kind of success it could only dream of in the past. So why don’t the executives responsible for those hits work there any more?

• The end of the news as we know it—In a stunningly short period of time, all three of the major network news anchors—Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw, and Peter Jennings—signed off, leaving executives scrambling for a way to keep network news relevant in an era of 24/7 information.

• Crazy Like Fox—They’re outrageous, unconventional, and occasionally off-putting, but more and more people are watching Fox shows. Most of all they keep watching American Idol. How did Simon Cowell snooker himself into a huge payday? Stay tuned . . .

In Desperate Networks Bill Carter digs deep inside the industry, delivering utterly irresistible “dish” that you won’t find anywhere else. It’s the perfect book to read when there’s nothing on TV. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great READ
A MUST READ for anyone who's in the television industry. It's a great read and great way to familiarize yourself with the big TV players in the industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars surprised me
Since I don't watch a lot of TV and have only watched one of the shows the book focuses on (heard of most of the rest of them though), I didn't expect to enjoy it nearly as much as I did. However, it was a fascinating read of the inner workings of the television business.

It's written very well though one must question how the author obtained the information to say "so-and-so thought X" since he describes rather minute details of people's reactions and inner thoughts. I'm not sure he he did numerous interviews and then wrote them all up in a narrative or what but regardless, I took some of it with a grain of salt but enjoyed it all nonetheless.

It gives a good portrait of the minds of TV executives: they seem to be a hard hearted, shamelessly greedy, and self-absorbed bunch. When I watch TV now, I feel like a pawn in their game as what you're seeing on TV is not so much the idea of a writer as it is a pandering to advertisers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great look into the television industry
This book is a great insight into not only the network television industry as a whole, but also provides a very interesting look at the history of your favorite television networks and shows from the past few decades.

This book focuses on the lives of the heads of the four respective networks.Even though they were names that most have never heard of, they are the ones responsible for deciding what we are going to watch on television.

A great read for people like myself who have no knowledge of the behind the scenes workings of network television.

5-0 out of 5 stars An in-depth look @ network TV in the 21st century!
Having devoured Carter's 1994 book The Late Shift (a fascinating story of the Leno-Letterman late night TV battle) when it was released, I can safely say he's done it again w/this fascinating glimpse inside the 4 networks and the decisions that helped shape primetime TV in recent years...especially fascinating are some surprising facts revealed along the way, such as how:

- CSI was nearly passed up by CBS in favor of a detecive dramedy called "Homewood PI", which was to star Tony Danza
- The "results show" on American Idol was created out of necessity so all viewers could vote (its UK equivalent, Pop Idol, is able to tabulate all votes immediately after the show airs b/c the country's entirely contained within one time zone, unlike the States)
- Julia Louis-Dreyfus was considered for the role of Susan on Desperate Housewives
- Who Wants to Marry a Multi-Millionaire, had it not turned out to be one of Fox's biggest fiascos, would've become a franchise that included a sequel, a "reverse" version that had a wealthy bride picking from a series of prospective grooms, etc.

All told, a great read for anyone who wants to know more about the ever-changing face of primetime TV and the backstories of current hit shows!

3-0 out of 5 stars A Desperate Writer's Attempt to Kiss Up to Networks
Bill Carter has spent years covering TV for the New York Times and in order to keep his inside sources, he needs to kiss up to them. This book is filled with inside stories gleaned from the first five years of the new millennium and some of the stories are interesting. But the writer has the bad habit of using over-the-top adjectives about the network bigwigs he is covering. The bigger the person in power, the bigger the superlatives used to the point of it being laughable.

In the end CBS chief Les Moonves, who is called "genius," comes across as inept and power-hungry.Once the writer's bias is stripped away the real story here is that those in charge of network TV have no clue how to program hit television shows. In virtually every case of a major success, the network leaders initially scoff at the program but then take credit when it becomes a hit. And none of these rich, elitist programmers seem to know what mainline American viewers want to watch.

Bottom line--the book has interesting stories for those who are addicted to how networks program prime time. But the author's writing style is stilted and lacks credibility. There are a number of factual errors and the reader should beware that what is presented as fact is actually the author's filtered view of an industry that he needs to kiss up to in order to keep his job. ... Product Description
From America’s most beloved comedic actress and the star of Desperate Housewives comes a personal, heartfelt, and often very funny manifesto on life, love, and the lessons we all need to learn -- and unlearn -- on the road to happiness

Teri Hatcher secured her place in America’s heart when she stood up to accept her Golden Globe for Best Actress and declared herself a "has-been" on national television. That moment showcased her down-to-earth, self-deprecating style -- and her frank openness about the ups and downs she’s experienced in life and work.

But what the world might not have seen that night is that Teri’s self-acceptance is the hard-won effort of a single mother with all the same struggles most women have to juggle -- life, love, bake sale cookies, and dying cats. Now, in the hope that her foibles and insights might inspire and motivate other women, Teri opens up about the little moments that have sustained her through good times and bad.

From the everyday (like the importance of letting your daughter spill her macaroni so she knows it’s okay to make mistakes) to the rare (a rendezvous with a humpback whale -- and no, he was not a suitor), the message at the heart of Burnt Toast -- that happiness and success are choices that we owe it to ourselves to make -- is sure to resonate with women everywhere. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Rambling and Insecure Charmer
This 3 and 1/2-star book starts off a rambling mess and gradually hits its stride as the TV star pulls back the layers of her life. She tries to get philosophical but doesn't have enough depth to pull it off; yet you will be charmed by her attempts and in the end find her endearing.

Hatcher is an insecure perfectionist who doesn't like her body, has daddy issues, wants to be a supermom and thinks she'll never find the right man. Those themes run throughout the book. She also has a lot of behind-the-scenes stories about her TV shows, the tabloids, the red carpet and what it's like to be a real person in Hollywood (like spending $8 on a vintage dress for a major party). She doesn't name any names but instead gives fake names to most of the people she dealt with. Some of this is very frustrating because she keeps telling the reader how bad she feels about herself, yet eventually it becomes refreshing to see her grow in her self-esteem and provide lessons for others.

There are a few shockers in here--she tells of going to a male massage therapist who touched her private parts and she is "confused" over whether it's a compliment or an assault. She tells of a nude statue that her mother gave her when she was 11 that is her lifelong most important possession (weird) and how it was broken by Diane Sawyer's crew shooting an interview at her house. And about every other page she talks about crying her head off, such as the time she was at Bed Bath and Beyond on Christmas Eve when a woman gets upset at Hatcher stepping in front of her (Hatcher takes many opportunities to tell of times when people think she is being a diva but the star says she is just misunderstood).

The title of the book is a bad one--she tries to claim at first that burnt toast refers to her trying different things and some don't work, yet later in the book you discover that she considers HERSELF "burnt toast" that no one wants and is just tossed aside (after her marriage ends and men reject her). Either way she doesn't explain it well enough for it to make sense.A better theme would have been something like "overripe bananas" because she tells a story of how she puts her overripe bananas in the freezer and eventually makes banana bread out of them. That is the better example of her life--she got ripe and before age 40 wasn't wanted by the business, froze herself away as a single mother, but then she turned herself around to become a bigger star with Desparate Housewives. In the end the stories are interesting but you have to get through some weak first chapters to get there.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this book Terri Hatcher is a beautiful person
I love this book its very motivating I would suggest getting this book for anyone who is stuck in a rutt

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous!
I loved this book! I normally avoid books written by celebs like the plague, and I wasn't a fan a Teri Hatcher...I had a look initially out of curiousity over the title, and then the blurb was interesting enough to give it a go.I am so glad I did! It's a fantastic collection of annecdotes and ideas about all aspects of life.Sometimes sad, often funny - it's very 'human'.Reading this book is like having a heart-to-heart with your best friend. You can't help but feel inspired, and ready to take on the world (one slice at a time!)

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I couldn't wait to read this book. I got on my library's waiting list. Finally it was my turn to read Burnt Toast.

I found it boring! So boring I couldn't even finish it as hard as I tried. I love Teri Hatcher as an actress and her personality in interviews.

I really wanted this to be a great book that I would take something from, but unfortunately....I was very disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars I throw the Burnt Toast away
I don't know why I was interested in reading this book.I have never watched a show Teri Hatcher played on and she isn't really a favorite actress of mine.I liked her on the Radio Shack commercials with Howie Long.I thought she exuded self confidence especially with someone as hunky and cool as Howie.

When I saw that she wrote a book, I was intrigued.I thought maybe she was writing about her life and how she became famous with a story full of name dropping and gossip and maybe a little thought here and there about her life's philosophy. This book was not what I expected.

Teri can be admired for her honesty and humbleness. She is significantly insecure and I think her age, like many actresses over 40, hangs over her head like a dark cloud. She wrote a witty and thoughtful book with a lot of advice for the average TV watching couch potato who now might be slightly inclined to change their life after reading this book. There were some comments in here that raised my eyebrow.Like when her daughter and her little friend were eating M&M's for breakfast and Teri says "Emerson, I just wanted you to know that I trust you with food. That's why I let you have the candy in your room-because I believe you know when you have had enough candy and you know what is right for your body and what is not .If you want to have M&Ms for breakfast once in while, like at a sleepover, well that's fine."The kid is 5 for Pete's sake! This sounds like something regurgitated from her therapist. This is not a book I am excited about reading.I think it is something an actress wrote to try and show how much she is like her typical fan when she really isn't.She is one of the highest paid actresses currently on primetime, how does this make her like you and me?She seems like a nice person, but the best part of this book is not her story, but the cartoons at the beginning of each chapter. ... Excerpt: Stephen Gary "Woz" Wozniak (born August 11, 1950 in San Jose, California) is an American computer engineer who co-founded Apple Computer, Inc. (now Apple Inc.) with Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne. His inventions and machines are credited with contributing significantly to the personal computer revolution of the 1970s. Wozniak created the Apple I and Apple II computers in the mid-1970s. Wozniak has several nicknames, including "The Woz", "Wonderful Wizard of Woz" and "iWoz" (a reference to the ubiquitous naming scheme for Apple products). "WoZ" (short for "Wheels of Zeus") is also the name of a company Wozniak founded. He is sometimes known as the "Other Steve" of Apple Computer, the better known Steve being co-founder Steve Jobs. In 1970, Wozniak had become friends with Steve Jobs, when Jobs had a summer job at the same business where Wozniak was working on a mainframe computer. According to Wozniak's autobiography, iWoz, Jobs had the idea to sell the computer as a fully assembled printed circuit board. Wozniak, at first skeptical, was later convinced by Jobs that even if they were not successful they could at least say to their grandkids they had their own company. Together they sold some of their possessions (such as Wozniak's HP scientific calculator and Jobs' Volkswagen van), raised USD$1,300, and assembled the first prototypes in Jobs' bedroom and later (when there was no space left) in Jobs' garage. Wozniak's apartment in San Jose was filled with monitors, electronic devices, and Wozniak had developed some computer games, similar to SuperPong but that had voice overs to the blips on the screen. Wozniak carried elect...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=27848 ... Read more

Wozniak's apartment in San Jose was filled with monitors, electronic devices, and Wozniak had developed some computer games, similar to SuperPong...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=27848 ... Read more
