Failed to persuade me that her reputation has suffered unfairly
According to the authors, "many young people associate the name of Susan Hayward with lavish Hollywood trash. That is a terrible injustice". That may have been true, at least in America, when this book was first published twenty years ago, but today most young people, unless they have a particular interest in the history of the cinema, would not associate the name of Susan Hayward with anything at all. That may or may not be an even more terrible injustice, but the fact remains that Hayward, although a household name in the forties, fifties and sixties, has long since ceased to be one, whereas some of her cinematic contemporaries and co-stars, such as Ingrid Bergman, John Wayne, Gregory Peck and Ava Gardner are much more vividly remembered today.


The authors may consider it an injustice that Hayward is remembered more for her weaker films than for her better ones, but even by their own critical analysis she was not a great actress. Their assessment of her career is, roughly, that she made two great films ("I'll Cry Tomorrow" and "I Want to Live!", both from the late fifties) and several dozen bad or indifferent ones. Whether that analysis is fair is difficult for me to say, because there are many of her films that I have never seen. (The likes of "My Foolish Heart" and "White Witch Doctor" are not exactly staples of the British TV schedules, even on specialist movie channels). Certainly, the two films which Laguardia and Arceri single out are good ones (although I am not sure that they merit the label "great" when compared to others of the period such as "On the Waterfront", "Bridge on the River Kwai" or "Rebel without a Cause"), and both have an excellent performance by Hayward at their centre. Nevertheless, few if any of the other Susan Hayward films I have seen can compare in quality. "The Conqueror", for example, which she made between "I'll Cry Tomorrow" and "I Want to Live!", verges at times on the ridiculous, with a particularly inept display of acting from Hayward herself making a bad film even worse. (She made the film unwillingly, under pressure from her studio bosses, and it shows).


Given her background, it is perhaps not surprising that some of Hayward's performances seemed rather amateurish. She was born in 1917 to a working-class Brooklyn family, her original name being Edythe Marrenner. (That is the spelling the authors use throughout, although other sources spell her surname as "Marrener"). Prior to taking up acting, she worked for a time as a model. Like many of the stars of the "Golden Age" she secured a film contract (initially with Warner Brothers) without having any formal training as an actor or any previous acting experience. Film acting was a profession which one learned upon the job; the Hollywood moguls often distrusted professional actors, who had found it difficult to adapt to film-making during the silent era, and even during the early days of sound in the 1930s looks and personality counted for more than technical acting skills. (In some sectors of the industry they still do even today).


The authors tend to concentrate more on their subject's personal life than on her career, although even her private life was not particularly noteworthy by the standards of some film stars. She does not emerge from this account as a particularly attractive personality- she had a fiery temper and a serious drink problem, and could often alienate those close to her. She quarrelled, for example, with most of her family, and was estranged from her elder sister Florence. (The roots of this estrangement may have lain in sibling jealousy- as a young woman Florence had show-business ambitions of her own, which never came to much). Nevertheless, she was never involved in any major scandals and her love life, with only two husbands and a handful of extra-marital lovers, was almost monastic by Hollywood standards.


Her first marriage, to fellow film-star Jess Barker, came to an end largely because of his jealousy that her career had proved more successful than his. The authors speculate that her performance in "I'll Cry Tomorrow"- a biography of the singer and actress Lillian Roth- was so convincing precisely because the film was made at a time when Hayward's personal experiences- marital breakdown, a struggle against alcoholism and a failed suicide attempt- closely mirrored the experiences of the character she was portraying. Her second marriage, to the Georgia lawyer and landowner Eaton Chalkley, with whom she was deeply in love, was, on the surface, more successful. According to the authors, however, there was an underlying problem even here. Chalkley was a devout Catholic, but was divorced from his first wife, and his remarriage to a woman who was herself a divorcee had the effect of cutting him off from the sacraments of his Church. The spiritual torment this caused him was a continuing cause of tension in their marriage, one that was not resolved until Chalkley was reconciled with the Church shortly before his premature death from liver disease.


It is perhaps significant that the longest chapter in the book is the final one, which deals with Hayward's final illness and her own death from cancer in her late fifties. It is as if the authors, having set themselves the difficult task of trying to interest their readers in a film star whose reputation has faded and whose acting was all too often second rate, decided that the best way of making her interesting would be to try and arouse sympathy for her as a plucky lady who faced death bravely. The book, however, although it contains some useful biographical information, never succeeded in persuading me that Hayward's reputation has suffered unfairly.

The Best of the Best on Legendary Susan Hayward
This is the best of the best of Susan Hayward. A review with love and dedication to viewers, who unlike me, did not have the fortune of meeting Mr. Moreno.

How did I meet Eduardo Moreno? In the late 1990's, I started a web page on Susan Hayward. It was titled the Susan Hayward Georgia Web Page. Why did I start a web page on actress who wasn't as famous as Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball and Joan Crawford. Precisely for that reason, I felt Susan Hayward should be in the same league as some of the other big stars. Susan was not only a beautiful actress but a smart one. Before I tell you about my encounter with Eduardo, let me tell you why I fell in love with Susan Hayward.

In my childhood, I fell in love with Susan Hayward. I remember stories my mother always told me while driving home from my grandparents on how she was so sad that Susan Hayward was dying. Susan Hayward at the time was younger than Farrah Fawcett, Goldie Hawn, and other big name older actresses of today. She was dying from brain tumors. However, Susan being the tough fighter as she was broke medical records and lived three youngers than what doctors expected. I fell in love with Susan for her courage and strength.Eduardo's book covers this story and on Susan's rise to fame, her struggles, and tragedies. There are many rare photos in this extensive book. Also, the book lists every movie Susan Hayward has appeared in and her rare television performances. Susan's only play "Mame" is mentioned with rare photographs. If you can't find the hardback book, buy the paperback only. Even if you have to pay $50, it is well worth it for this rare out of print book.

Now, how I met Eduardo. My web page required many sources and pictures to be used. Luckily, an email friend of mine knew Eduardo Moreno. She gave me his number and I called. He was very glad that I was doing a web page on Susan Hayward. Even after 15 years since his book was last published, Eduardo still thought and love Susan Hayward. Through arraignments and the loving care of my ex-significant other, I was able to fly up to New York and stay with Eduardo Moreno. It was a rare treat. He had scrap books piled high from the floor of his attic which had nothing but pictures and articles of Susan Hayward. We spent hours looking at some of the scrap books. Unfortantly in comparison to the Smithsonian Institute, it would have taken at least 2 weeks to see everything. Many of the rare pictures in the Films of Susan Hayward came from Eduardo's personal collection. Eduardo had a beautiful oil painting of Susan Hayward in his living room. We started a friendship and kept in touch over the next year. I visited Eduardo one more time around Christmas of 1999. I am glad I have pictures of the two of us and his autographed book of the Films of Susan Hayward. Unfortunately, My significant other and I had a nasty fight and I moved out of the house after 8 years. I had to go back to work and had to stop my Susan Hayward web page. I lost contact with Eduardo Moreno. I heard from my email friend that he wondered what happened to me. I was too ashamed to tell him that I had to stop the Susan Hayward web page. Finally, I heard in October 2000, Eduardo died from a sudden heartache. I was very sad. He was a wonderful author and friend. In all the books published about Susan Hayward, this is the best. Eduardo Moreno never made much money from the publishing of this book but was happy anyway because he could share his love for Susan with others. He was hoping a reprint would have materalized but it never happened. Today, I am not sad that Eduardo Moreno is dead. I am happy because I know he has finally got to meet Susan Hayward and will be with her forever.

In my memory of my sweet friend, Eduardo Moreno, please buy this book. Please have the priviledge of enjoying many rare photos and learning rare facts on this beautiful, gifted, underrated actress. Eduardo's book was created from love. It has been my honor to talk to you and be able to tell you about my rare encounter with Eduardo Moreno. Enjoy the book.

Jewels are Small and Precious
While short (I read the book in about an hour.), this gem contains enough wisdom for a lifetime.

The book's insight is challenging, and it can be read at levels ranging from the "feel good" to the profound: you either need a strong spirit to take it all in, or you will grow to have a strong spirit if you follow its wisdom.

The edition I read (Australian) was titled, Advanced Souls, Bag of Jewels.

I felt the need to write this review and sing my praises about this collection after receiving other books in this genre by a different author which proved to be greatly disappointing.

I own many books of this type used for divination through bibliomancy and practice this magick daily.

This book has an attractive cover with its inside text written in calligraphy script. It also has a fabric tassel/bookmark attached from the binding which makes a nice touch. The quote on each page credits the origin from which the quote came which is nice to have available for when I go searching for other motivational quotes. It has also steered me in a good direction on purchasing other meaningful books because of the references to the author and/or book titles.

For the purpose of divination through bibilomancy, the collection of Susan Haywards books has my top recommendations. They are easy to communicate with and have a very nice reciprocating energy. The quotes have depth, dimension, and a good loving energy within them.

The Buddhist version of a Magic 8-Ball

Spooky
This is just spooky. I bought the book and without reading it, I just turned to a page, and there was the answer to my question. I then read the book, and that was the only page that applied. Spooky. The book otherwise is full of lots of wisdom.

Very Inspirational and Uplifting Book
Bibliomancy or the art of telling the future through the use of random selection of books is an interesting method of divination which I believe is what this book is designed to allow its owner to do.While it is up to you as to whether this is a valid idea, the book itself is quite good.

In essence, it is a book of uplifting and inspirational quotations and if you meditate or contemplate on the random page that you turn to, much like the author suggests, I found it to be a motivational and sometimes peaceful or comforting tome.There are many passages randomly placed on the pages in this book and if it fails to help you in some way, then the fault may lie in the expectations of the reader and not the book itself.

I highly recommend this book for its wonderful content and its unfailing way of inspiring me even when I'm not feeling particularly good.

While My Castle was Burning, I was BusyLearning.......
I am sure many of you out there do not remember the great Spiritual War of 1988. It was fought between the Seers (who wanted to free men's consciousness) and the Warlocks (who wanted to confine it). A terrible Warlord named Rohbahr Sedivekkian and his troops were burning down towns and lands throughout the area and were fast approaching my castle. My spirit guides were urging me to leave immediately for I had little time. All I was able to save were bottles of coveted brandy, an oil painting of George Washington and this book of insights.

Well, as you would expect, I made it to safety, but the battle still goes on. Anyway, I drank the brandy, donated the portait of Washington to some museum, but I kept the book. This gives you some indication of Metamorpho's high-minded value system. Well, maybe? Just a bit?

This book has been with me for a long time, but it is so valuable in many respects. While alot of the quotes contained herein may seem simple to some, they always retain the ability to change as your conciousness expands. There are depths and levels here to explore. But what is interesting is that many of these sayings beg for an introspection of the self. There are grains and kernals of truth sprinkled about, but what you get from it or don't get, really relies upon yourself.

You begin to look at yourself and the world differently and you come away with new eyes that are able to see more clearly then before. The difficulties and trials of life don't seem to be as insurmountable as we think them to be. You begin to develop a new understanding and outlook by going within, and the evolution and growth from these quotes can be very helpful. As you read some of these you get the feeling that you are part of the collective energy of the universe and that, indeed, great power resides within each and every one of us.

The following are some examples of the quotes:

"I do not expect anything from others,
So their actions cannot be in opposition to mine".

"Man cannot discover new oceans,
until he has the courage to lose sight of the shore".

"Life is either a daring adventure
or nothing".

"Change is never a loss -
it is change only".

Those are just a few. Alot of these lead you to a more peaceful, calm thought. Alot of them open up avenues that you maybe never considered or always assumed closed. But, it is the positive nature of these affirmations which I am so taken with. It is a journey of evolvement and seeking answers below the surface. It says to hold a problem in your mind, open this book to any page and there will be your answer. In many ways, this is true. But, as I said, what you get from it is totally up to you.

Now, I must get back to writing my next lecture. Oh, and about Rohbahr Sedivekkian? Well, after much carnage, he achieved his evil goal. But, in the end, the joke was on him. Suzabella, the witch of the shore, zapped all his dignity and power and now he is but a pawn piece on the great big chessboard of life. Ah, the boomerang effect of the Universe. Dontcha love it?

I have been a fan of Susan Hayward for so long.I was glad to get this book! It is great and the cover is beautiful!

Unbelievably Overpriced!Not worth it!
I was very excited to see a new book coming out on this great actress.When I saw the price I thought it was probably a large coffee table book with a lot of big color photos of Miss Hayward inside.I knew something was amiss when I saw the size of the box it came in and how light it was when I picked it up.Inside was a very small hardcover book with reviews of her films inside and a very small commentary on her personal life.Interspersed were small black & white photos from her films.Only 174 pages, followed by index and research notes.I paid [money]for this!!Where did they come up with this price?There is no price listed anywhere on the book.I feel very ripped off.Don't make the same mistake as me. ... Excellent Reference
I've taken several film studies classes while in college and this book makes an excellent reference guide. The information she provides is to the point, easily accessible and supplements any film class. Sure, it's not a very interesting cover to cover read because it's a reference guide. It will help you when you forget specific terms and vocabulary in film studies, and terms are easy to look up quickly before you get called on in class!

Scholarly, Well Researched, Dense with Theory
Susan Hayward has done a good job putting together a compendium of cinema concepts. Her work is very scholarly and well researched with a good deal of additional references (for further reading.)

Professor Hayward's bio says she is a Professor of French Studies.It shows in her book. If you feel like you haven't had your fill of post modernism, semiotics and structuralist/post structuralist theory, this book will get your diet straight.

This isn't the kind of book you'd just sit down and read from cover to cover. It's more of a reference.My complaint is that the book is a little dry and dense.

However, if you need a reference book on cinema concepts, this is a good choice. ... Read more

Adequate if somewhat one-sided biography.
Beverly Linet has crafted an adequate if somewhat one-sided biography of Oscar-winning actress, Susan Hayward.

Covering her life as a poor girl in Brooklyn with big dreams it moves on through her tempestuous years as a starlet unable to get the lucky breaks. Her torrid personal life, marriage and divorce to Jess Barker are the main focus of her life in the 1940s-50s.Susan (born Edythe Marrenner) finally achieves success and recognition as an actress with her Oscar nominated portrayal of an Alcoholic in "Smash-Up" and achieves happiness in her personally life with marriage to Eaton Chalkley.After four nominations she finally winners the coveted Oscar in 1959 for "I want to live".Tragically, he beloved husband dies in 1966 and after several years in seclusion Susan begins a comeback which is cut short by her death from cancer at the age of 57.

Throughout it all Susan remained intensely private.Her aloofness was a combination of myopia, nature and the years of struggle.But this only helped to make he as mysterious off screen as she was on it.This does present some problems for her Biographer.

This book is an adequate pop biography.The author is frank in revealing her admiration for her subject right in the introduction.However, that would soon be evident even to the casual reader in any event.Ms Linet has spoken to some family members who never before gave interviews, but she is all to willing to not pursue lines of questions that make those people uncomfortable.This does tend to create a one-sided view of controversial events.Too many interesting things are left inadequately covered for the book to be well rounded.It is however, interesting and informative within these limits and it gives a nice picture of Hollywood during the heyday of the "Studio System".

While I enjoyed this book well enough, I think that Susan Hayward is far more entertaining as an actress than this book was as a biography. ... Read more

Open to Any Page and There is Your Answer!
I LOVE this series of books. Whenever I felt doubt, or wanted a `message' I held my question in mind, opened to the page that my instincts led me to, and there was the answer I needed to understand.
Susan Hayward did an outstanding job in compiling the messages. They are practical, uplifting, insightful, and will surely help you with an immediate answer or new awareness regarding any difficulty or decision you are facing in the moment. I recommend all of the books in this series because of their truth and the upliftment and clarity they will bring you.

A WELL-DONE BUT SLIGHTLY FLAWED BIOGRAPHY OF A GREAT ACTRESS
Brooklyn-born Susan Hayward possessed what was arguably the greatest combination of drop-dead good looks and sheer acting ability that the silver screen has ever known. She has long been a favorite of mine, having starred in quite a few true cinema classics, as well as any number of admirable lesser films. I had wanted to read a biography of the woman for some time, and am happy to report that Beverly Linet's 1980 work, "Susan Hayward: Portrait of a Survivor," suited my needs quite well. Ms. Linet was a professional acquaintance of Susan's, having worked in Hollywood as a journalist and a publicist in the 1950s and '60s. She was able to interview not only Susan's two twin sons, but also her first husband, Susan's nurse of later days, many of Susan's coworkers, her neighbors and her priest. Many of these interviews were exclusives. Ms. Linet clearly knows and admires her subject, but when she comes to an area that her research has not been able to delve into, she quite rightly admits it. Her biography of this great Hollywood star is written in a seemingly offhand, chatty manner, almost as if the author were telling you Susan's story over drinks in a sitting room. The reader is not burdened down with unnecessary trivia, and the book, at a little over 300 pages in length, moves along briskly. Indeed, there were times when I wished Ms. Linet would linger a while over one or another of my personal favorite Hayward films (such as "Smash-Up," for instance) for some in-depth treatment. Still, I, a Hayward fan of some 25+ years, learned a large amount from Linet's work.
We are told the story of Susan's Brooklyn youth, of her early modeling career, her arrival in Hollywood in 1937, and her slow but steady climb to the top, culminating in her Oscar win (for "I Want to Live") in 1959. But what was most interesting for me was the little-told story of Susan's later years: her second marriage (to a Georgia businessman), her short-lived theatrical career, and her sad final days. Ms. Linet tells Susan's story well; she is a good writer, and arranges her chapters in cliffhanger fashion. She is not averse to telling tales that depict Susan as a prima donna and as a moody recluse. Susan, pro that she was, had her quirks and problems, as do we all, and Linet manages to make her emerge as a well-rounded, complex, but ultimately admirable person. Indeed, Hayward's 27-month fight against cancer will inspire anyone who reads of it. This is one moving biography, indeed.
That being said, I must also report that Ms. Linet and her editors are guilty of some occasional sloppiness and/or poor fact checking throughout this book. I feel a bit churlish in pointing these things out, but feel I must, as they undermine what is otherwise a very well-researched piece of work. To start with, there are sporadic problems concerning dates. Linet tells us in passing that Warner Baxter won his acting Oscar in 1931; that date should be 1929. She tells us that Lex Barker passed away in 1974, whereas he really died in '73. She mentions a Barbara Stanwyck movie called "The Night Walker" and gives its date as 1968; that should be 1964. She says that January 21, 1971 (the date Susan's Ft. Lauderdale apartment caught fire) was a Friday; in reality, 1/21/71 was a Thursday. Susan's first wedding date is said to be July 24, 1944, but later in the book it is said to be July 23, and elsewhere it is said that "July 16, 1953 [was] six days short of her ninth wedding anniversary." HUH? Is it the 24th, 23rd or 22nd? Who knows? Or, if Susan was really born on 6/30/17, wouldn't she be approaching 49 when her second husband died on 1/9/66, not 48, as Ms. Linet tells us? Also, we're told that the March 1975 Georgia funeral march for Susan took place 17 years after the parade for her 1959 Oscar win; shouldn't that be 16? Slips like these can really distract a sharp-eyed reader. There are other goofs, as well. The author tells us that the actress Franciska Gaal was Norwegian, whereas in truth she was born in Budapest. She mentions a "Clausen Ave." near the Brooklyn Museum; that should be Classon Ave. She tells us that the star of the 1924 movie "He Who Gets Slapped" is Lon Chaney, Jr., whereas the date alone should indicate Lon Chaney, Sr.! Hayward's second husband's farm is said to be 40 acres in size; elsewhere, it is said to be 450 acres. An Ellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas is mentioned in the book; that should be Nellis Air Force Base. I could go on, but you get the idea. This book could surely have benefitted from another thorough going-over during the editorial process. Still, it unquestionably reveals much about Susan Hayward that has never been revealed before, and for that reason alone, I highly recommend it to all fans of this great actress, as well as to fans of old-timey movies in general. ... A succinct, thorough guide to film theory and technique
Routledge Key Guides are typically succinct, thorough, and extremely useful - and this is no exception. The articles cover a broad range of topics from simple editing techniques to sophisticated Lacanian theory. Hayward's tone is authoritative, but never pedantic. These entries are not excessively wordy and are thus useful to beginning film students, or even regular film buffs. That is not to say, however, that the book isn't useful to more advanced students. While most film students will probably own Bordwell's "Film Art", you may need to do a little digging before you find exactly what you need. This guide is very straightforward to use, so you never have to hunt around for, say, how the concept of "agency" relates to the cinema. This isn't really a replacement for a larger volume on film theory and technique, but it is a nice companion for easy access to lots of information.

The articles range from one paragraph for terms where a straightforward definition will suffice to 21 pages on psychoanalysis. Again, Hayward's goal is communication, not a dazzling display of erudition. Nothing against dense scholarly texts - this is just easily accessible by comparison.

The book is cross-indexed and each entry includes helpful tips for further reading. Add to that an extensive list of references, and three indices (films, names, and terms) and you've got a handy reference that you'll return to again and again. Whether you're trying to get a handle on the rapidly expanding world of film studies, or you're working on a paper and you need a quick reminder of what a "parallel reversal" is, this is worth picking up.

A good book which gives an overveiw of the various topics of cinema.If you want to know what one of the ideas are, read this book.Great for writing papers in the sense that it is concise and accurate.

However, if you want a real in depth understanding of the topics covered, you'll need to look farther.This is a great starting place for anyof hundreds of topics covered in the ook!

Absolutely essential and the most informative, so far....
This book seems to be the best cinema studies reference book, so far, on the market. It does cover most definitions from different film theories and cinema studies briefly, yet precisely. It does not have all of the filmstudies' essential vocabulary, but it has most of it.Numerous examplesare also supplied with every definition or argument.I should say, though,that the format could have beed better [easier to access]. But, other thanthat, this book is the perfect guide to your film studies.
