EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION. Thomas Arnold, seventh child and youngest son of William and Martha Arnold, was born on June I3th, 1795, at West Cowes, in the Isle of Wight, where his family had been settled for two generations, their original residence having been at Lowestoff, in Suffolk. His father, who was collector of the Customs at Cowes, died suddenly of spasm in the heart, on March 3rd, 1801. His two elder brothers, William and Matthew, died, the first in 1806, the second in 1820. His sisters all survived him, with the exception of the third, Susannah, who, after a lingering complaint in the spine, died at Laleham in 1832.His early education was confided by his mother to her sister, Miss Delafield, who took an affectionate pride in her charge, and directed all his studies as a child. In 1803 he was sent to Warminster school, in Wiltshire, under Dr. Griffiths, with whose assistant master, Mr. Lawes, he kept up his intercourse long after tin yhad parted. In 1807 he was removed to Winchester where, having entered as a commoner, and afterwards become a scholar of the college, he remained till 1811. In after life he always cherished a strong Wykehamist feeling, and, during his head-mastership at Rugby, often recurred to his knowledge, there first acquired, of the peculiar constitution of a public school, and to his recollections of the tact in managing boys shown by Dr. Goddard, and the skill in imparting scholarship which distinguished Dr. Gabell;—both, during his stay there, successively head-masters of Winchester. He was then, as always, of a shy and retiring disposition, but his manner as a child, and till his entrance at Oxford, was marked by a stiffness and formality the very reverse of the joyousness and sim... ... Product Description
This is History! is the Schools History Project's Key Stage 3 scheme of work for National Curriculum history. Through a combination of in-depth and overview units it offers a varied, relevant and challenging diet for the whole Key Stage 3 History programme of study. This book is an in-depth study about the English Civil War. Section 1 provides an innovative approach to one of the most important but most problematic aspects of the Britain 1500-1750 study unit: the causes and consequences of the Civil War. These topics are studied through examining the decisions which faced Oliver Cromwell - should he fight against the King? Should he execute the King? Should he accept the crown himself? The big task is for pupils to write their own biography of Cromwell - bringing these decisions to life. Section 2 is a shorter citizenship/political literacy unit exploring how the Civil War changed England's system of government. PLEASE NOTE: The accompanying teacher's resource book for this title can be downloaded for free at www.hoddereducation.co.uk/thisishistory ... Read more

Product Description

A scion of two great families, Arthur James Balfour was born to wealth and privilege and possessed intellect and charm in legendary abundance. On succeeding his uncle as Prime Minister in 1902, it seemed that he had come into his inheritance: a true grandee, his path to the summit of power seemed to be almost without obstruction. He held office longer than any other Cabinet minister and dealt with successes and defeats with similar equanimity during his 50-year career. Balfour was a Conservative but never a true-blue Tory like the powerful squirearchy who viewed him with awe but often found him difficult to understand. He was in fact many different things: a Scottish laird and an English sophisticate; a ferocious partisan and a celebrated philosopher; a champion of Christianity yet a defender of spiritualism; an Imperialist and a Zionist; an Etonian and a reformer of state education. His premiership was eventually destroyed by party strife, yet he was the maker of the 1917 Balfour Declaration as well as the 1926 Balfour Definition of the Commonwealth, and at age 73 he dominated the pivotal 1921–2 Washington Naval Conference. Balfour’s was a remarkable life, unimaginable today no matter one’s talents or wealth.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine book
R.J.Q. Adams' BALFOUR: The Last Grandee is a fine book. However, I strongly recommend reading Kenneth Young's 1963 biography before pursuing Adam's work. Young does a superb job of analyzing Balfour's philosophical volumes; as well, Young takes the reader back to the era in which Balfour lived and practiced philosophy, politics and the art of life. There is something rather too modern and easy-going about Adams' style of writing which does not suit the subject matter.Taken together, both books provide the reader and the serious historian with a broad and yet detailed sensibility of Arthur James Balfour. ...
