Product Description
William Holden was a Hollywood star whose career spanned four decades, more than 70 films and three Academy Award nominations. "Golden Holden" won an Oscar for his role in Stalag 17 and, after films like Sunset Blvd., he became one of Hollywood's most powerful stars in the late 1950s. His personal life included international adventures and romances with such stars as Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, yet he suffered from alcoholism and clinical depression. This biography covers his entire life and career, from boyhood through his greatest successes, short decline, re-emergence in The Wild Bunch, and his legacy of support for African wildlife. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars William Holden: A Biography
This is a terrible book. Most of it copied from decades-old articles and interviews already published. No attempt appears to have been made to research or interview people who might actually remember Mr. Holden. It merely lists his films chronologically--again, no real attempt to critique his acting etc.A waste of time and money.Bill Holden deserves much better!

5-0 out of 5 stars A very focused and enjoyable read
It's refreshing to read a well-written, insightful, "focused" biography, and I found this read to be exactly that.Weeding through the potential fluff and providing well-founded, exacting research is something Capua does well -- especially in his last three biographies.Capua tends to focus more on the facts to allow the reader to draw their own conclusions and feelings about the stars he chronicals, rather than filling a book with speculation, ill-founded half-truths and misleading representations. As an English translation from the Italian writer, this book is a surprisingly smooth and effortless read, unlike many translations. This book would be a good addition (not substitution!) to the shelf for any Holden fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a new book
As a big fan of Bill Holden, I enjoyedthis book.In some ways this biography goes deeper than the previous one. Yes Thomas gave more details about Holden private life, however the Capua book charts in a very clear way Bill's life from his childhood in Pasadena to the Hollywood fame and the years in Europe. The author gives deeper details and anecdotes about ALL Bill's screen roles, something that Thomas barely did and often skipped. Even though the Capua book is not as emotional and sentimental as Thomas, I think is still a well researched and honest portrait of an amazing man.
Finally after 26 years a book on William Holden that is not out print! Just a bit expensive like all McFarland's book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Save your money.
This seems like a very poor rehash of the Golden Boy bio by Thomas. I expected some new material on Holden or at least some photographs not previously published. I'm sorry I wasted my money on this book, don't waste yours. Feel like I got ripped off big time.

1-0 out of 5 stars KEEP YOUR MONEY
A great book on Golden Holden is written byBob Thomas called Golden Boy. No need to read any other book about Bill. It is the sad and true story of a wonderful but troubled man. ... Read more

the guide works. Let it work for youOpportunities are all around us, yet conditioned by our past and held back by the acceptance of an unfulfilling future, they often pass us by. the guide delivers a simple tried and tested, step by step approach on how to free ourselves from an unfulfilling past and achieve everything we ve ever wanted.Written by Dr William Holden, Chairman of internationally acclaimed specialists in behavioural transformation, Sewells, the guide is a new work of extraordinary power and simplicity delivering achievable life changing lessons on every page.the guide is delivered via a series of lessons that Maya instills in her lifelong friend, Paul. Like Maya before she transformed her life, Paul s existence on earth seems to be a daily struggle of financial, work and personal worries, dogged by the search for something meaningful.Maya explains to Paul how to take control of life and change. She explains that we are all a product of our own conditioning, beliefs, attitudes, feelings, emotions and behaviours the guide, unlike other books of this genre, explains not just what we should do to improve our lives, but also why and how it works. It is not enough for example, to develop a positive attitude about the future; we must also develop a positive attitude about our past and take positive action. If you want to choose a day to change your life for the better, make that day today; the day you begin reading and acting on the guide.Critical acclaim for the guide:- The simple principles and practices contained in these pages do work and we ve got an Olympic Gold Medal to prove it - British Women s Olympic Gold Medal Winning Curling Team A book that makes sense. It gives explanations of why things happen but also gives practical ways to change and reach your true potential. A must-read. 5-0 out of 5 stars Poor Guy.
Holden was such a great actor, but a poor family man. Alcohol is the demon here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated Actor
William Holden is one of the most underrated actors of Hollywood.Evidence by far is that this is the only book on his life. The book is a heartfelt tribute to what appears to be a caring, thoughtful and professional actor who always remembered the ensemble of people who helped him reach stardom. It is also a very sad tale of a person who never overcame his demons and was finally killed by them. His life and career were cut short and it is our loss.

Product Description
Whether a marketing campaign or a museum exhibit, a video game or a complex control system, the design we see is the culmination of many concepts and practices brought together from a variety of disciplines. Because no one can be an expert on everything, designers have always had to scramble to find the information and know-how required to make a design work until now.

Universal Principles of Design is the first comprehensive, cross-disciplinary encyclopedia of design. Richly illustrated and easy to navigate, it pairs clear explanations of every design concept with visual examples of the concepts applied in practice. From the "80/20 rule to chunking, from baby-face bias to Ockham's razor, and from self-similarity to storytelling, every major design concept is defined and illustrated for readers to expand their knowledge.

This landmark reference will become the standard for designers, engineers, architects, and students who seek to broaden and improve their design expertise. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
It was amazing. The book maybe took a little bit to arrive, but it is well taken care of and in good shape.

The book is great: contains more than 200 principles of Design that everyone who is into creative careers can use, not only for design related stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book for Anybody in Any Discipline
On impulse, I purchased a copy of the new 2010 edition of this book from a local bookseller.

This is a terrific book, a concise compendium of 125 "universal principles of design" that is classified in the Art/Design catagory, but might just as well be read by anyone interested in cognition, behavior, psychology, marketing, sales, general business -- I cannot think of anyone who would not benefit immensely.

This book presents distilled nuggets of wisdom with a lucid explanation, references to scholarly studies serving as basis, and great illustrations. Each of the 125 principles discussed is treated, typically, in a single spread with text on the left and illustrations on the right. One thing I appreciate about this presentation is how easily accessible the information is for my own information overloaded brain.

Universal Principles of Design is the essence of understanding and thinking about human-to-human interface in and with the modern world.

This book is both theory and practice, a bound volume of reliable experience. Just past age 50 myself, I've often heard the expression, "If I'd known then what I know now..."This is a book I'd like to go through item by item with my children, because it is essential to transfer experience. Building on these sound principles of design, and learning to reason and balance solutions, will prove invaluable to anyone seeking to develop effective thinking and good judgement.

I have not been so thrilled with any book purchase in years! Highly recommended!

Just spotted on back cover: [...]

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly a one-stop source for considered design
As someone who is relatively seasoned in the design industry, and a person who considers the usability and "experiential" elements of online design daily, I was very pleased with this book. I also think it would make an excellent book from which to teach design in general, since the principles literally apply to all design, always. This book does not teach much of the standard aesthetic principles, but instead uses those ideas to describe the principles behind actually applying design to real life. It is easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to digest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Kindle version versus latest Hardcover version
The Kindle version is from 2003 and has 100 principles. The latest 2010 version is in hardcover and has 125 principles.I wanted the Kindle version so that I could search, highlight and create notes electronically.I was disappointed to discover the Kindle version was not also the latest version.I now own both :|

3-0 out of 5 stars Growing Up With Herself
William Holden is listed as the 25th most significant film star by the American Film Institute, but he has not attracted the interest focused on stars like John Wayne or Humphrey Bogart and little has been written about him since his death in 1981.This book is more about Virginia Gaines than it is about Holden. So, if you are interested in Holden's life and work, you will not learn much from this small book.Although there are some interesting anecdotes about Holden, most of the book is devoted to the author's experience of being ignored as a child by her mother, 1940s film star Brenda Marshall.Virginia Gaines was adopted by William Holden when he married her mother, and, by her own account Holden treated her well to the extent that he devoted much time at all to her or to his sons, Scott and Peter. As she tells it, Gaines was raised mostly by servants. This is not a "Mommy Dearest" expose but it tells a story of benign neglect which was an experience shared by many children of Hollywood celebrities.Being a film star does not help people to be great parents and few have performed both roles well.If you are seeking insight into William Holden as an actor, or as a man, the Bob Thomas biography, "Golden Boy," is a better choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars An insightful look into the life of William Holden and his family
I was very excited to learn about this book, as there is not much out there written about one of my fave stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood, William Holden. This book is a memoir written by his stepdaughter, Virginia Holden Gaines. Holden adopted her when he married her mother, Ardis (also known as Brenda Marshall).

This book is a very interesting and quick read. Most of the stories are about her growing up years. There is some interesting background info about Holden's family and his younger years, as well as her mother and biological father.

If you are a fan of William Holden, I urge you to get this book. You won't be sorry! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not faster, not smarter
I wanted to design my own web sites for my two businesses. So I bought MS Frontpage and a couple of books to teach me how. I'd never done any web design before. This book seemed most to the point, so it was the first one I started with.
After having read four more books on the topic, I can speak with some authority on which ones are good and which ones not.

Although this book isn't the worst one of the bunch, ("Absolute beginner's guide to creating web pages" is), it isn't much good either.

The layout is pathetic:- The book follows no logical order and one has to jump to this chapter and then to another one.

It is also short on step by step instructions, which makes it clear that the book was not written with novices, such as myself, in mind. At the same time it isn't authoritative, which means I had to spend a good deal of time searching the internet for answers which I think should have been in the book.

In the end I gave up because I felt that this book wasn't helping me at all.

Luckily for me, I'd also ordered " Build your own web site" by David Karlins (ASIN/0072229535), which had me up and running in no time at all. The funny thing is that Karlin's book has an almost overwhelming amount of information more than this book, even though it is only 222 pages, compared to 347 pages.

The information in Karlins' book is much more useful, and arranged much more logically.

After having spent hours struggling to find the relevant bits in "Faster Smarter", I gave up and took some aspirins. I went back to the PC, armed with "Build your own Web site" and in a short period of time I had a functional web site. And to me that is all that matters.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK if you want to stick with templates
I bought this book on the same day as I purchased frontpage, in hopes of creating a relatively simple, but original website. No fancy graphics, but a nice design that I could hopefully het frontpage to code for me. What a dissapointment. For example, I attempted to put in a navigation bar. The book covers this decently, but only if you use the pre-made buttons, and doesn't cover how to alter the buttons to look how YOU want. No thanks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Faster Smarter Microsoft Office FrontPage 2003
This book with the title of faster smarter did not prove to live up to its name.Another book pertaining to Frontpage 2003 with the name "FrontPage fast & easy" was a better fit to its name. Both books are from Microsoft Office, therefore, each has its place in the development of Microsoft's fine product.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a great little book!
Normally I do HTML code by hand, lately I've moved to FrontPage. I can't say enough good things about this fantastic little book. It has been very helpful for me every step of the way in my FrontPage implementation. A good starter book with solid design tips.

2-0 out of 5 stars Written in that other language - Microese
I got Front Page at a discount (quote unquote) - no expensive packaging AND no booklet.I have some experience with the programming world but was lost and knew I needed help. This was the first (and worst) place to turn.Like another reviewer, my wife thought this was just what I wanted...and at first I did too.But the presentation was jumpy and worse, it seemed as if the author were addressing a room of Microsoft business folks. Many of the explanations were of the obvious, particularly the review of all the menus. Why not put these in an appendix for later perusal?I was not looking for the dumbed-down Idiots series but I did need something that this did not fulfill. After much searching I found just the one and now am ready to go "on line" with my new site. ... Bill Holden shatters the icon through a varied and classically challenging story telling. He selected a classic historical happening, held it up to a mirror, remained true to it general literalness and fashion a thought provoking novel. His story of discovery sails from the West to the East, from the Carribbean to Europe. In his book Columbus is played by his mirror image, "Subumloc".
