Verse-by-verse explanations with a literal translation

Shouldn't a Bible commentary clarify what God's Word actually says? Going beyond questions of authorship, date, sources, and historicity, respected linguist and teacher Gundry offers a one-volume exposition of the New Testament that focuses on what is most useful for preaching, teaching, and individual study--what the biblical text really means. Providing interpretive observations in a "breezy" style that's easy to read and adaptable for oral use in pulpit or classroom presentations, Gundry directs his book to an evangelical audience. His crisp translation of the New Testament inserts various phrasings of passages in brackets, allowing for smooth transition from original text to alternative and contemporary readings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It took a lifetime!
Robert Grundry's Commentary on the New Testament is surely the work of a lifetime of careful study and also prayerful attention to the Scriptures. It is invaluable as a resource for reflections and homilies on the New Testament readings of the liturgy. I am profoundly grateful to him for this gift from his faith and perseverance.

Dr. Gundry has given his life to the interpretation of New Testament Greek. Hopefully ministers and teachers will take the time to read and contemplate this volume of great work. ... Read more

Principles of Biochemistry, 4/e has a well-deserved reputation for being the most accurate biochemistry textbook in the market. 4-0 out of 5 stars Good product.
I purchased this product in good condition here on Amazon and was able to sell it in good condition on Ebay. It was not new, but because I needed it for a class it was functional, it had all pages and every page was legible.

2-0 out of 5 stars FRUSTRATED AND ANNOYED!!!
Its been almost a month since I ordered my book and it still hasn't arrived. Part of the purchase included a question testbank which I received promptly but the book hasn't arrived. I've sent 4 emails to this seller and still haven't received a reply or information on my order. So I suggest if you need something promtly don't buy from this seller. I'm getting behind in my class and will now have to buy another book.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL BUY :)
It was here really quick and exactly as the orginal book except easier to carry around. GREAT PRODUCT>

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as Good as Expected!
I had to purchase the book because of the General Biochemistry course that I took at school. Although it is a well-written book, it does not provide the materials that are covered in our class. I do not even know why this book is required for an upper-division general biochemistry course! In other words, the book is very superficial and does not have enough substance.

Moreover, there are a lot of errors in the answer key section. You can pay slightly more and buy Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, but at least you would have something that you can learn from. I would not recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Biochemistry text that leans more on the chemistry side...
This book was adopted by my university for a senior level / first year graduate level biochemistry course. It is well written and contains no messy jargon.Literally all of the text is useful information. In addition, it is concise.

My chief complaints about the book are: 1) the illustrations require substantial updating to be compared to what is presently available even in inferior texts.2) it lacks clinical/biological correlations and focuses instead on the quantitative nature of biochemistry (acid base calculations etc)Clinical correlations are certainly essential to applying biochemistry concepts. If this book had either or both of these two items, it would have earned 5 stars from me!

Instead, I recommend the following texts:
- Biochemistry: outstanding illustrations and concept coverage.
- Marks' Basic Medical Biochemistry: A Clinical Approach: outstanding clinical correlations with concise concept coverage and good illustrations (although not in full color)
- Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition: outstanding text and illustrations!

This commentary demonstrates Gundry's conviction that Matthew relied on the Gospel of Mark and the document "Q." Gundry presents an alternative reading of the Greek text of Mark, putting forth the thesis that Mark's Gospel constitutes a straightforward apology for the shameful manner of Jesus' death; as such, Mark is essentialy an evangelistic tract, Gundry says, rather than an obliquely written handbook of Christian discipleship and church life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Commentary That Needs No Apology
Gundry's Commentary on the Second Gospel is simply the most thoroughly researched and meticulously documented study in print! His thesis is relatively simple: The Second Gospel presents an apology for the circumstances surrounding Jesus' death.

All commentators on Mark end up dealing, in one way or another, with the fact that there exists two distinct types of literature within the narrative. The first kind, largely toward the beginning, consists of success stories in which Jesus works miracles, casts out demons, heals the sick, forecasts the future, draws large crowds to himself and so on. These characteristics were highly estimated in the first century Greco-Roman world. The second kind of literature, largely towards the end of the Gospel, consists of Jesus' passion in which he is betrayed, forsaken, denied, and ultimately crucified. Such characteristics would bring shame upon a person.

Gundry goes to painstaking detail to show how Mark appeals to the various success stories in Jesus' life to immerse a shameful death, a death by crucifixion, in a sea of glory. Jesus' death on a cross then turns out not to be a thing of shame, but instead, the opposite turns out to be the case. According to Gundry, the Gospel of Mark presents, however paradoxical, a cruciform shaped theology of glory.

Two concerns a potential buyer may have: 1.)This commentary assumes some knowledge of Greek and technical terminology in exegesis from the reader and, 2.) the author's Pre-Millenial interpretation of the Olivet Discourse may seem strained to those whose interests fall outside the well worn millennial arguments.

This is a substantial work that simply must be consulted for any academic study in the Second Gospel and which should also prove a valuable tool for most who are interested in a detailed understanding of Mark. ... Read more

Product Description

Dry Water tells the story of Donald Strand, from the time of his arrival as a ten-year-old orphan at his relatives’ Manitoba farm in 1890 to his apogee as a successful farmer. It recounts the crises he faces during a troubled marriage and the great stock market crash of 1929. His life parallels the growth and development of Manitoba during the same period.

Stead considered Dry Water, written in 1934–1935, to be his crowning achievement. He was unable to find a publisher for it during his lifetime, although an abridged edition was published by Tecumseh Press in 1983. This new edition includes the complete typescript, a critical introduction, and explanatory notes that place this novel in its proper literary and historical context.

Product Description

Always daring Hollywood censors' limits on content, Billy Wilder directed greats such as Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, Ginger Rogers, Marlene Dietrich, Kirk Douglas, Audrey Hepburn, and Gary Cooper. Billy Wilder: Interviews follows the filmmaking career of one of Hollywood's most honored and successful writer-directors and spans over fifty years.

Wilder, born in 1906, fled from Nazi Germany and established himself in America. Starting with a celebrated 1944 Life magazine profile, the book traces his progress from his Oscar-winning heyday of the 1940s to the 1990s, in which he is still witty, caustic, and defiant.

Often playful and sometimes outrageous, but just as often very serious, Wilder details his rise as a Berlin cub reporter to a fledgling screenwriter in Hollywood's "Golden Age." He tells the stories behind his brilliant direction of such classics as Double Indemnity (1944), The Lost Weekend (1945), Sunset Boulevard (1950), Stalag 17 (1953), Sabrina (1954), The Seven-Year Itch (1955), Some Like It Hot (1959), and The Apartment (1960), among others.

A dazzling raconteur, Wilder gives the scoop on the royalty of cinema, from the maddening magic of Monroe to the uncanny empathy of frequent alter ego Lemmon. Though his natural tendency is to spin marvelous anecdotes on the subject of show business, Wilder also delivers penetrating and instructive observations on his craft. On screen, his special blend of cynicism and romanticism was always expressed in a style that avoided showiness.

Billy Wilder: Interviews includes in-depth profiles, spirited Q&A's, and on-the-set glimpses of the director at work. Taken together, the interviews form an unofficial memoir of a sophisticated artist once described by a colleague as the most unusual and amusing man in Hollywood.

Robert Horton is the film critic for The Herald in Everett, Washington. His work has been published in Film Comment, New York Newsday, American Film, and the Seattle Weekly. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Logic, History, Greek, and Scripture Defeat the Pre-Trib. View
Gundry's 2nd book on Eschatology (1st- "The Church and the Tribulation") is truly amazing. I have personally talked to him via email and his very goal for this book was to reveal the Historic Premillennial i.e. Post-Tribulationalism to an average layman. The book is filled with arguements from his more definitive and superior book, "The Church...". This book lays out simple arguements usually primarily logic along with Greek, History, and Scripture. Unlike his other book written in the 70's, this book presents more recent arguements from the Pre-Trib. concept. If an individual reads this and slowly understands the historic Biblical means of prophecy by interpretation and a basic understanding of Greek, then his other book is highly recommended. In Summary: Gundry presents great arguements that are hard if not impossible to debate whether it be the Greek understanding of "keep thee from" from Revelation 3:10 or the simplicity of the 1 phase, 1 complex event, the 2nd Advent, Gundry is a great representative of the Post-Trib. view and without doubt a great scholar.

4-0 out of 5 stars Are You Willing To Be Challenged?
Having been raised much like Robert Gundry, in a church and family that strongly believed in the pre-tribulation rapture view, I was not highly interested in reading a book that I knew would challenge my view. However, I am glad I did.

Bob Gundry takes a hard look at the rapture of the Church of Jesus Christ and he comes to the conclusion that the Bible does not teach the popular pre-tribulation rapture view expoused by popular teachers such as Tim LaHaye (LEFT BEHIND), Dr. John MacArthur (THE SECOND COMING), and many other evangelicals.Gundry looks at nearly every major second coming passage from Matthew 24-25 to 2 Thessalonians 2 to the book of Revelation to put together a view that was largly held by the Church until the late 1800's.

I would encourage you to read this book. While you might not agree with Gundry, he will rattle your theological cage.He did that to me.A friend of mine once said that he held to the pan-tribulation view.It will all pan out in the end.Who really knows when Jesus will come?I for one will keep my eyes on Him until He comes (1 Cor. 9:24-27; Hebrews 12:1-3).

For more on the post-tribulation view see George Ladd's THE BLESSED HOPE and his commentary on the book of Revelation.

3-0 out of 5 stars Right position, poor defense
This book defends, in my opinion, an essentially correct understanding of the Second Coming of Christ/Rapture.Unlike "The Church and the Tribulation", which is excellent, this book is confusing to the common reader.Mr. Gundry uses run-on sentences that leave the reader breathless. He jumps from topic to topic, leaving the reader wondering what he is trying to say.
The information in this book is important and true, and it needs to be communicated to the Christian community. It just needs to be communicated more clearly than this book is able to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Completely Blows Pre-Trib Out of the Water !!!
Bob Gundry, the leading name in Post-Trib Eschatology gives us a book that describes the message that the scriptures teach as a whole, not bits and pieces of scripture that pre-tribber's use in defense. This book also gives us examples found in the Early Church Fathers, written as early as the 1st Century that teach a post-trib rapture, none of the Church Fathers believed they would be saved in a secret, pre-trib rapture - they knew they would need to face the persecution fo the Antichrist and the trials of the Great Tribulation and that's what they wrote to their churches. Some of the Church Fathers were taught by some of the Apostles themselves. If you have been taught the pre-trib rapture all your life you should definitely read this book!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars I challenge pre-tribbers to read this one
This is not necessarily a step by step study of the post-trib position, but rather a comparison of the pre-trib theory to the post-trib.Out of the 7 or 8 books I've read that are opposed to the pre-trib "doctrine", this one shows more holes in the great escape mentality than all of them.A must read for anyone anti-pre-trib.A must must read for anyone holding the pre-trib theory. There won't be much you will be able to argue with if you are a pre-tribber, though history tells us you will.Forgive my bluntness and please give this book a try to make sure you know why you believe as you do.The majority isn't always right. As in some of my other reviews, let me also suggest anything by Robert Van Kampen, H.L. Niger and Marvin Rosenthal. ... Read more

Product Description
This work examines the connections between the Horton Foote's strong Texas connections and his literary art while considering the playwright's many decades of experience in the world of American theater and the lessons he learned from such authors as Henrik Ibsen, William Faulkner, and Flannery O'Connor. This book examines several major plays and the autobiographical writings of the distinguished American playwright and screenwriter Horton Foote. As a native of small-town Texas who began his pursuit of a career in acting in the difficult days of the Great Depression, Foote was able to find himself as a playwright while struggling as an actor in New York City in the 1930s. Writing stage plays and then working in early television, Foote developed dramaturgic expertise that he was able to apply to screenwriting, resulting in an academy award for his screenplay for the 1962 classic film "To Kill a Mockingbird". Later, he won another Oscar for "Tender Mercies" as well as a Pulitzer Prize for his stage play "The Young Man from Atlanta" (1995).This work includes a sequence of studies of plays, including "The Trip to Bountiful", "The Young Man from Atlanta", and Foote's great nine-play sequence "The Orphans' Home Cycle". ...
