4-0 out of 5 stars Informative book yet outdated.
Wonderful, informative book about a very good British actor.Since this is I believe the only biography on him his theater work was something new to me.Also the chronicle of the making of the Long Good Friday was a delight to read since it took so long to be released.Good choice of pictures though the book needs to be updated badly. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Support for budding poets!
George Ella Lyon's, "Where I'm From," is a wonderful gem for giving teachers of young poets an accessible link to how a writer thinks, imagines, and prepares to write a poem. The collection is perfect for teachers that want to launch a new year with an opportunity for students to do some writing. The signature poem, "Where I'm From," can be used to model student writing that invites everyone to share something about themselves and begin the process of building community in the classroom.Ms. Lyons has a very down-to-earth way of expressing her encouragement to budding writers. There is a poet in all of us, and this book will help students find their writing "voice."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for teachers
This book teaches about writing poetry and is suggestive of things teachers could do with their students.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, inspiring, usable book for writers and teachers.
George Ella Lyon has been inspiring writers and teachers for years. Her writing exercises and her lyrical way of talking about writing keep her indemand as a workshop leader and speaker at schools. At last we have thisbook!I have used her exercises for years in my writing workshops, alwayswith results that far exceed the writing that students have have done up tothat point. Those same exercises have led me into writing poems I didn'tknow were waiting to be written. No one is better at evoking the voices ofreal people or helping a new writer really see what she is trying to get onpaper than Lyon. The exercises in this book are wonderful, but a closereading of Lyon's poems is perhaps the most rewarding part of Where I'mFrom for writers and teachers alike.Highly recommended. ... Read more

Excerpt: Robert William "Bob" Hoskins, Jr. (born 26 October 1942) is an English actor, known for playing Cockney rough diamonds, psychopaths and gangsters, in films such as The Long Good Friday (1980), and Mona Lisa (1986), and lighter roles in Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and Hook (1991). Hoskins was born in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England, the son of Elsie Lillian (née Hopkins), a cook and nursery-school teacher, and Robert William Hoskins, Sr., a bookkeeper and lorry (truck) driver. One of Hoskins's grandmothers was a Romani. His father, a Communist, brought up Hoskins as an atheist, and he now describes himself as an agnostic. In 1967, aged 25, Hoskins spent a short period in kibbutz Zikim in Israel (though he is not Jewish). According to the production notes on the Special Edition of Who Framed Roger Rabbit, his acting career started when he was sitting in a pub enjoying a beer when someone came up to him and told him to go upstairs to audition for a play. So he did and actually got the role. Before that day a career in acting was the last thing he ever thought he'd have. After beginning his acting career on the London stage in the late 1960s, Hoskins first gained wide attention in the original BBC television serial version of Dennis Potter's Pennies from Heaven as sheet music salesman Arthur Parker and On the Move (both 1978), an educational series intended to tackle adult illiteracy. Later, he played Iago in Jonathan Miller's BBC Television Shakespeare production of Othello. Hoskins's performances in British films such as The Long Good Fr...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=164228 ... Read more

Excerpt:Alfred Edward Housman Alfred Edward Housman (pronounced / ha sm n/ ; 26 March 1859 30 April 1936), usually known as A. E. Housman , was an English classical scholar and poet , best known for his cycle of poems A Shropshire Lad . Lyrical and almost epigrammatic in form, the poems were mostly written before 1900. Their wistful evocation of doomed youth in the English countryside, in spare language and distinctive imagery, appealed strongly to late Victorian and Edwardian taste, and to many early twentieth century English composers (beginning with Arthur Somervell ) both before and after the First World War . Through its song-setting the poetry became closely associated with that era, and with Shropshire itself. Housman was counted one of the foremost classicists of his age, and has been ranked as one of the greatest scholars of all time. He established his reputation publishing as a private scholar and, on the strength and quality of his work, was appointed Professor of Latin at University College London and later, at Cambridge . His editions of Juvenal , Manilius and Lucan are still considered authoritative. Life Housman was born in Fockbury, a hamlet on the outskirts of Bromsgrove in Worcestershire , the eldest of seven children of a country solicitor . His mother died on his twelfth birthday, and subsequently her place was taken by his stepmother Lucy, an elder cousin of his father's whom he later married in 1873. His brother Laurence Housman and sister Clemence Housman also became writers. Ho... ... Read more

Excerpt: Sir Charles Spencer "Charlie" Chaplin, KBE (16 April 1889 25 December 1977) was an English comic actor and film director of the silent film era who became one of the best-known film stars in the world before the end of the First World War. Chaplin used mime, slapstick and other visual comedy routines, and continued well into the era of the talkies, though his films decreased in frequency from the end of the 1920s. His most famous role was that of The Tramp, which he first played in the Keystone comedy Kid Auto Races at Venice in 1914. From the April 1914 one-reeler Twenty Minutes of Love onwards he was writing and directing most of his films, by 1916 he was also producing, and from 1918 composing the music. With Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, he co-founded United Artists in 1919. Chaplin was one of the most creative and influential personalities of the silent-film era. He was influenced by his predecessor, the French silent movie comedian Max Linder, to whom he dedicated one of his films. His working life in entertainment spanned over 75 years, from the Victorian stage and the Music Hall in the United Kingdom as a child performer, until close to his death at the age of 88. His high-profile public and private life encompassed both adulation and controversy. Chaplin's identification with the left ultimately forced him to resettle in Europe during the McCarthy era in the early 195...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=5142 ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Super Mario Bros. is a 1993 science fiction adventure film loosely based on the video game of the same name and its entire franchise. The film follows the exploits of Mario (Bob Hoskins) and his brother Luigi (John Leguizamo) in a comical dystopia ruled by King Koopa (Dennis Hopper). Super Mario Bros. was originally a critical and commercial failure upon its release in the United States. Harsh criticism was aimed at the film's darker atmosphere and its inaccuracies compared to the game's franchise. The film was also largely disliked by Hoskins, Leguizamo and Hopper themselves due to the very notorious production problems they faced and having negative opinions about the film's nature similar to critics. ...
