Product Description
In Transcendence and History, Glenn Hughes contributes to the understanding of transcendent meaning and the problems associated with it and assists in the philosophical recovery of the legitimacy of the notion of transcendence. Depending primarily on the treatments of transcendence found in the writings of twentieth-century philosophers Eric Voegelin and Bernard Lonergan, Hughes explores the historical discovery of transcendent meaning and then examines what it indicates about the structure of history. ... Product Description
Over a decade has passed since Philip Hughes first chanced upon a notebook whose shape and rough, recycled paper inspired him: "I was captivated by the texture of the paper, by the book's shape, indeed by the whole idea of working in a notebook, something I had never done before". Many striking images of the landscapes he has encountered on his travels, from the South Downs in Sussex and the Luberon in the south of France to Bungle and Cabbage Tree Creek in Australia are included here. This individual record of ten years of travel is published to coincide with a touring exhibition in Australia of Philip Hughes's work. ... Read more

Product Description
The Politics of the Soul includes eight essays examining one of the most profound studies of religious experience to appear in the last century: that of the political philosopher Eric Voegelin. Voegelin is increasingly recognized as a political theorist of exceptional scope and erudition and the most important philosopher of history since Toynbee, and his treatment of religious experience is a crucial part of his overall analysis of existence and history. This collection of essays by prominent Voegelin scholars is the first book to explore the relevance of that analysis to the contemporary understanding of political theory, theology, history, and philosophy of consciousness, and as such it constitutes a significant contribution not only to Voegelin scholarship but to the current quest for theoretical foundations. ... Gratitude is expressed also to Howard Lindsay, Robert Coleman, and Sawyer Falk for their kindness in reading the book in advance of publication and permitting quotation of their reactions to it. Finally, the author wishes to acknowledge his personal indebted ness to his friend and colleague, Robert S. Gray, for critical assistance, and to Mary Corkins for painstaking typing and indexing. Preface IT will surely he apparent to even a casual observer that a book such as this must depend for most of its information on sec ondary sources. The use of primary sources, such as newspapers arid theatre programs, is the appropriate method for historians of limited periods or regions. Fortunately w c have had in this coun try a number of such patient annalists, and to them the present writer expresses his profound gratitude, as well as his apologies for any possible misinterpretation of their findings. Unfortunately, the number of reference books to which the present volume is indebted is too great for detailed acknowledg ment, though the titles are included in the selected bibliography appended to the volume. I must, however, pay tribute here to the monumental work of the late Professor George C. D. Odell, Annals of the Neiv York Stage, which is the most stupendous theatrical record ever compiled by an individual, and which re flects so remarkably its authors combination of scholarly in dustry and affection for the theatre... ... 1-0 out of 5 stars 1700-1950 ends in 1825? Where's the rest?
I am very confused. The title does not say Part One. The table of contents lists chapters up to XV but the text ends at chapter IV. Nothing on Amazon's website says anything about a partial text. I bought my copy from Shakespeare and Co. and nothing on their Marketplace page says anything about a partial text. Where's the rest of the book? ... Read more

1924. From the Introduction: The poems in this volume are almost entirely the work of students who were enrolled last year in the verse-writing course offered by the English department under my instruction. Between October 1923 and June 1924 about thirty undergraduates took this course, and more than half of them composed poems which I consider worthy of preservation. ... Read more
