5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT for use in therapy sessions
I'm a child therapist, and I bought this book to use with my clients. It conceptualizes the idea of a "hurt" as an object that grows and grows, eventually crowding the protagonist out of his bed, until he finally talks to his dad about his hurt. The talking makes the hurt get smaller and more manageable.I have found this a perfect story for children who struggle to talk about all kinds of different hurts, and they really connect to the underlying message that talking helps. The story also models healthy coping skills which are great to process with kids. The pictures provide a nice visual for the metaphor of The Hurt.I've found that my clients from ages 5 and on like this book-- even some of the teens enjoy having it read to them! This would also be a great book for parents to read to kids.

5-0 out of 5 stars A WOW Book!
This is a WOW book because it takes a very difficult topic, unspoken, repressed hurt and addresses it in a very visual and effective way for young people. A MUST for your children's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for healing hurts
This book is an excellent tool to help children and even adults give their
pain a concrete image, and help them learn how to let go of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Hurt is a must for your bookshelf
I first heard of this book from a first grade teacher. We were discussing her relationship and the pain her husband was experiencing during their divorce. She felt that his unresolved pain from childhood had lead to his inablity to bond. She had enormous compassion because she understood his hurt though he had left her. When she read this book to me as we sat in small chairs in her class room one day after school, I wept as she turned the little pages.

Little book, big message, valuable insight, extremely well written. I have often wanted to write Teddi Doleski a letter of appreciation for this book. I share it every chance I get. Sincerely, G. Auxier

5-0 out of 5 stars magical
The Hurt is a beautifully written book for children and adults. It can be used in a therapeutic setting or for everyday reading. The book deals with the anxiety, loneliness, and upset that can result from the internalization of feelings. The character learns to ease this anxiety/pain by verbalizing his internal distress and seeking out the comfort of his father. Teddi Doleski magically captures the "hurt" that results from conflict/teasing/internalization of unhappiness and the tendency for this "hurt" to grow without assistance. The book then provides the character with ways to cope with these feelings and externalize his emotions, which results in decreased "hurt." I buy the book in bulk and provide all of my clients and friends with a copy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ambitious, but not obvious.
This book of plays will grab you and shake you and never let go.The representations of diverse characters in common situations set behind uncommon dialogue create a world just like real life, only more interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars Plays about people now
These are plays about people now, of color, in this country. This writer deals with history to show how we really treat each other and ourselves. BLADE TO THE HEAT is a play like no other -- sexy, musical and complex. The other plays in this collection are equally daring. This writer tackles Oedipal issues, race, brown on brown discrimination, and even HIV/AIDS. But his plays are about people first and most. This is a great book to teach with at the high school and college level. Wonderful stuff for students and theatre departments looking for real stories and real feelings.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Publisher...
"These courageous plays vibrate with deep emotional authenticity and subterranean political consciousness--brave plays by a brave writer speaking for many marginalized voices--speaking with honest passion and lyrical anger.Oliver Mayer is one of the few American playwrights who is showing us today what the theatre of tomorrow can be like."

Jose Rivera, screenwriter | The Motorcycle Diaries

"A great writer with firebrand dialogue. Oliver Mayer contributes not just as a playwright, but as an educator and a Latino who has kept his roots."

Stephen Adly Guirgis, writer | Jesus Hopped the "A" Train

"Like the best jazz, Oliver's work in The Hurt Business is bold, passionate, always brave, always new.He writes about America, in all its colors, and won't settle for less than the truth."

Product Description
After suffering the traumatic loss of his child to abortion the day before his twenty-fifth birthday in 1999, William found himself in a mental and emotional whirlwind of despair and regret, of depression and guilt. Nothing could prepare him for the devastating experience of losing achild and the emotions he would encounter in the aftermath. The many thoughts and emotions that he experienced after the abortion were becoming far too much for his mind to contain. Eighteen months after the abortion, he began writing letters to the child he lost as a desperate cry for help.

Realizing the purpose behind the pain, William battled every emotional demon imaginable to document his journey. He knew he wasn't alone in his grief. He wanted others who have suffered from the loss of their children to abortion to know that they too, were not alone. He worked on this journey over the course often years. He has seen the depths of an emotional hell, in which he questioned his own will to live.

Dearest Angel ... is the document of his journey; a journey of regret and repair, of grief and gratitude, and of hurt and healing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read yet not easy to read
This is a topic you never really read much about. How do fathers feel when their children are aborted? This book has a very conversational style to it so it reads nicely, but the subject and the raw emotions in the book will definitely put a lump in your throat. Whether you are pro-life or pro-choice you cannot deny that abortion touches an emotional chord in the people that live through it and experience it. The author has shared his most intimate private thoughts regarding his child lost in an abortion and his relationship with the child's mother. ... Read more
