Life Changing!!
This book changed my life for ever!!It is so complete... I would recommend everyone to read it so you can have an idea of how our government is silently killing us.I was so amazed by it that I continue searching and reading books that had to do with healthy eating and in less than a year I became vegetarian eating just healthy food, organic when possible.Trying my best to be green in regards of household cleaning products and simply everything we buy and put in our bodies everyday.It is the best thing I have done and I love it!!

Buy organics for their rich nutrient contents

"Modern" agriculture implemented in its production process fertilizers which are being processed out of oil.Nitrogen, phosphor and potassium (NPK) are being supplied to plants, but without trace elements.Since plants are incapable of producing minerals, when you eat vegetables or fruits you don't get enough of those. So you have two options. Capitalism likes you to buy "supplements", so they can make an extra dollar. If you are more intelligent, you definitively go for organics. Dr Jensen says this makes sense, for your health and even for your pocketbook, although organics are sometimes more expensive : "If you have to pay two dollars a pound for certified organically grown grapes, versus sixty-nine cents a pound for sprayed grapes, let me point something out : It's better to pay a lot for something than a little for nothing. You're always ripped off no matter how little you pay for nothing. This is an economic fact."

sincere and readable but lacking scientific weight
I bought this thinking it might have some hardcore science (in a digestible form for the layman) like 'The Hundred-Year Lie' or 'Our Stolen Future'.It is much more lightweight than that - although it is basically a scientific discussion, it does not have any great depth.It discusses depletion of the soil, knock-on effect on human health, and general environmental issues.I liked the tone and sincerity of the authors, and liked it enough to read all the way through, but didn't feel like I learned that much.On a related topic, there's a good and more up-to-date book about what makes healthy soil (and food... and people...) called 'We Want Real Food' by Graham Harvey.

Useful
This book has gotten me back into doing what I used to do: buying organic.It got expensive, the organic food store is an hour away... and I got lazy.This book woke me up again.It has also raised a desire in me to start my own garden.The information is mostly good, though maybe a little scattered.

There is a little bit too much eco-hysteria for my taste, and I don't worship "Mother Earth" either, but those views don't affect the useful information in the book.Some of the info might be outdated by now, so I'd recommend doing some more research before implementing some things (e.g., detoxification).

I just finished reading this book and have started to re-read it.I have been so touched by this book; it has tranformed my attitude and thoughts about my health, the earth and environment.I only hope that everyone who reads my review will read this book or, at least, consider an organic diet in support of preventative health and farmer's whose growing methods are replinishing the valuable topsoil and doing away with highly toxic chemicals.It is hard to believe what "modern society" has done to our planet and health in such a short amount of time. In a classic case of failing to see the forest for the trees, Jensen, a homiletics professor and author of two works on narrative preaching, says that preachers tend to analyze biblical books to glean the slightest bits of exegetical data, yet miss the thrust of the overarching story they try to convey. Jensen contends that preachers get too caught up in an analytical, left-brained mentality that obscures the power and meaning of the good news story.

In these pages Jensen helps us approach Mark's gospel with eyes wide open rather than with microscope in hand. He treats Mark's gospel as a narrative whole and challenges preachers to tell the gospel's story to their congregations. In doing so, Jensen emphasizes the strength of biblical stories. He says that these stories are powerful in and of themselves, that they work without much explanatory help. The problem is that listeners never hear the entire story, because it's always told to them in bits and pieces.

Jensen's adaptation of what Robert Alter (author of The Art of Biblical Narrative) calls narrative analogy assumes that ""... parallel acts or situations are used to comment on each other in biblical narrative."" In other words, if Mark told story ""B"" to flesh out the reality of story ""A,"" then perhaps preachers today can do the same thing in their preaching. Students of Jensen have enthusiastically embraced this approach: ""This is great, we never get to hear them (stories) whole!"" How did it ever occur to us that we could improve on the story of the Prodigal Son, for example, by reducing it to ideas?

Richard A. Jensen teaches homiletics at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa, and Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Shattered Vocations
"Shattered Vocations"by Mark Jensen focuses on the personal crisis a person may experience when leaving a job, voluntarily or involuntarily.The author writes from an admittingly Christian point of view.

Among the points covered include:

1.While the world gives praise to those who put everything into their work, the Bible does not view as our chief purpose and advises regular rest from work.
2.We must direct our passions toward human and divine relationships.
3.Work can be very demanding but often fails to provide deep fulfillment apart from God.
4.Sometimes we must say no to social structures that makes us less than what God created us to be.
5.Loving and serving others is a cornerstone of God's vocations for us.
6.When in a period of darkness, do not assume that you are being punished by God.Use this time to be more sensitive and dependent on Him.
7.Jesus' life consisted of a rhythm of engaging others and being alone with the Father.
8.Jesus' prayer and solitude were central to what He was doing.
9.At times a troubled heart may be a sign of sensitivity instead of wandering or desertion.
10. Honestly searching for God's purpose for our lives will sometimes be lonely and full of struggle.

Having gone through some job losses of my own, I can attest to the truth in the points mentioned above.Being a life-long Southern Baptist, I must respectfully disagree with the earlier reviewer's comment of "the best of what Southern Baptist used to be".I would like to know what he means by that.Several Southern Baptist churches provide counseling and other services to members of the church and local community who have suffered a job loss.While the Southern Baptist Convention has faults like other denominations, the convention has made strides in assisting people who are going through a job crisis.

Comment aside, "Shattered Vocations" is an encouraging read for anyone going through a career or other type of crisis.

Recommended.

Representation of the best the Southern Baptists used to be
In this small volume, Jensen does a wonderful job of blending a psychological insight with compassion for a lay audience.In spite of many personal reservations about reading this book (Why waste the time?), I found enough nuggets in every chapter to keep me at it.

Jensen understands vocation to be more than Christian ministry and more than occupation.He understands vocation has to do with a commitment to follow a Jesus way of life.Occupations change, even ministerial ones, but the lifelong process of pilgrimage and growth continues unabated.

His chapter on the pain of loss is sensitive not only to losses suffered from external forces, but also the normal losses associated with our common human life cycle and those losses we bring upon ourselves.Jensen strives to communicate that loss, when seen within the shadow of the cross, becomes an effective tool to rid us of the falsities with which we so often encase ourselves.

He grounds vocation in both creation and covenant, in both who we are and what we are called to do, and challenges us to relive our personal experiences of God even when faced with loss.In what may well be the best chapter in the book (no. 4), Jensen reminds us that it is our individual experiences of God that sustain us through loss and provide a foundation upon which to rebuild our lives.

To me this book represents the best of what Southern Baptists used to be - a diverse people seeking to know the Unknowable in a personal and experiential way.While there is no mistaking his strong evangelical convictions, I doubt that Jensen could get this volume published today.He did remind me of why I was once a Southern Baptist, and of what we have all lost.

Classic in corporate law
This book has been a classic in legal literature since it was first published. It is amazing how current and up to date it is! If you are studying the inner workings of the corporations this is the book to buy!

The Modern Corporation and Private Property
Detail review of how corporations operate and the role shareholders play in buisness.A must for anyone desiring a better understanding of stocks.

Those who forget the past are condemned to relive it
This is an excellent, timely book on modern corporate structure and its philosophical and legal underpinnings. It was written over 65 years ago, but it is as relevant now as it was then. The large scale government chartered collectivist enterprises we know as corporations were well developed by the early 20th century. Over 80 years ago, most of the economy was controlled by these collectives, and most of those collectives were controlled by their management and not their owners. In fact, some of these enterprises might have hundreds of thousands of owners.

Berle and Means dissect what this change means in terms of Adam Smith's theories and more modern legal theories. What does it mean when one owns property that is controlled by others. What checks are there on the authority of corporate officers in their fiduciary roles? Who is the beneficiary of their trust? These questions are as relevant today as they were when this book was published.

The world of the unbridled modern corporation has its defenders, most of the sort that George Orwell called bully worshipers, that is, those who worship power, the more, the better. Unfortunately, as we seem to discover every generation or two, these structures have serious shortcomings when it comes to providing the goods and services that we expect. Today, as when the book was published, we are in a period of reassessment. The private sector has failed horribly, showing itself unable to manage the nation's finances, produce automobiles or deliver health care.

When times are good, people forget that corporations are just government chartered collectives, and what the government creates, it can monitor, modify and control. Berle and Means point this out clearly as they outline the rise of modern corporate structure. It was not created in one step, nor did it evolve naturally. Berle and Means then turn to the remedies that might restore the nation's faith in its private sector. In fact, one section of the book underlies much of modern security law, including such innovations as bans on insider trading, the creation of the SEC, reporting requirements, and restraints on the assignment of earnings and on issuing shares.

Berle and Means, and those who followed their advice in the New Deal did their job well. For decades, the markets ran smoothly, and when things are running smoothly, people forget the lessons learned. The engine of our economy needs a tune up, perhaps even a rebuild. This makes it a good time to learn something about how the engine works, and how it came to work that way.

Worthy of study today, as well as when it was written!
I was lucky to have Professor Berle as a teacher at the Columbia Law School. I read the book then (in the early 1960s) and re-read it recently. It is timely reminder that the corporation--that great engine of our prosperity--has undergone significant (and not for the better) changes--not only from when the book was written, but also in the forty-four years since I read it last.

worthless classic, error-ridden and misleading, even in 1932
This book was NOT the first to stigmatize giant corporations for "the separation of ownership and control." Rather, the key to the book's success was the timeliness of its appearance, during the Great Depression, not because it had anything new to contribute to our understanding of publicly traded big businesses.Far from being a riveting spellbinder, the prose is dry and never eloquent. But it possesses far more serious defects, e.g. that the alleged novelty of 20th century corporations -- that passive owners contribute funds to an enterprise that is run by others, professional managers -- is hardly anything new.The same status has always existed for limited partners in a firm with a managing partner; they must keep silent, exercising no voice or vote in management, lest they lose their limited liability status.The "innovation" actually began five centuries earlier in the great Italian merchant ventures:noblemen, clerics, widows and others unsuited to business affairs or uninterested in business decision- making, entrusted their wealth to entrepreneurs, in exchange for a share of the resulting profits.Berle & Means never acknowledged that dividing investment and management into two distinct functions is an example of specialization or division of labor-- and that everyone's participation is voluntary. Common sense asks: if shareholders really are being systematically shortchanged or abused, why do people continue to buy shares in giant corporations, and why do they buy new stock issues or reinvest their dividends in these companies?
