Product Description
Return to the lush green hills of Ireland, where love is touched by magic--and where the Gallagher siblings explore the depths of their fiery hearts.Amazon.com Review
In the small village of Ardmore, Ireland, Gallagher's pub isthe center of the lively seaside community and the home of threepassionate siblings: Aidan, Shawn, and Darcy. As a world traveler anda barkeep, the eldest brother Aidan has just about seen and heard itall, but when a quiet professor from Chicago enters his tavern, he isinstantly intrigued--and certain that there is more to Jude Murraythan what meets the eye.

Jude has returned to her grandmother's ancestral home to sort out herthoughts, know her heart, and "find Jude F. Murray in six months or less."After a life of deliberate security, Jude finds herself recovering from afailed marriage and a disappointing career. With the pretense of a researchexpedition, Jude leaves her life in Chicago and moves into the charminghouse on top of the faerie hill. Surrounded by the awesome scenery andrelieved by the simplicity of life, Jude excuses her visions of ghosts andfaeries as signs of her mental recovery.

But the inhabitants of Ardmore, and Aidan Gallagher in particular, don'tdismiss these apparitions with such convenient logic, and Jude learns tolisten more carefully to the messages in the world. As Aidan andJude draw closer to each other, Jude struggles to discover, balance, anddefine the complex parts of her soul.

In the character of Jude Murray, Nora Roberts has created asophisticated woman whose internal development from skittish recluseto confident lover is realistic and convincing. Carefully avoiding the"good man is a solution to all problems" plot, Roberts lets Jude andAidan interact and develop individually, as well as together as acouple. While this modern tone is refreshing, it feels a bit at oddswith the supernatural, faerie themes. As this is the first in a seriesabout the Gallagher siblings and the faerie legend, perhaps thesethematic contradictions will sort themselves out in the subsequentnovels. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Irish story
you can tell Nora loves Ireland. Besides the storyline which was a page turner, the description and welcoming of Ireland was wonderful. Made you want to take a trip to Ireland and be welcomed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my faves!
'Jewels of the Sun' and 'Tears of the Moon' (books 1 and 2 of the Gallagher series) are among my favorite NR books. They are both full of characters I wish I knew and places I'd love to visit. I finished the books feeling that I'd lived a short time in an Irish village!

The relationship between Jude and Aidan is complex enough to be interesting, but not so angst-ridden as to be tedious. I could identify with Jude in the process of recreating herself, and I liked seeing the impact of it in the way she viewed herself and on her evolving relationship with Aidan. I also liked the little bit of magic thrown in! The character development seemed very well done. I felt like I knew the main characters well and really liked them. But there were also great secondary characters that I became attached to. Really fun book! It's on my keeper shelf!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lighter Fare
I know Nora Roberts is a widely read author - probably because her style is simple and straightforward. Before I read Jewels of the Sun, I had read a couple of books by Frank Delaney - a much deeper, more interesting author. So by comparison, this Roberts book pales.

A couple of things stand out:Jude, the lead character, lives in a house with a ghost and seems unfazed by it - even when she first discovers it.And then the ghost appears a few times in the story, but has no interaction with Jude.Conversely, Jude has several encounters with another tortured spirit, who says he is using Jude, but we never know why.

Aside from a few things left unconcluded, the book was fun reading about an Irish family that could have lived anytime and anywhere in Ireland.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheesy
I'd read several stories by Nora Roberts before I came across this book and considering the amount of good reviews it had gotten I was expecting something amazing. But my goodness was I mistaken. I couldn't finish it and finally gave up around chapter 15.

I pushed myself to read as much of it as I could but I couldn't take it seriously. It was just one irish cliche after another and I wouldn't be surprised to hear if a few leprechauns popped up later in the story . There seemed to be endless paragraphs describing the misty green hills and the red haired freckled faced women of the village. And don't get me started on the dialogue. It was so corny that I would cringe when I'd read it.

I didn't enjoy Roberts' take on life in Ireland and I'll be staying well clear of any other books set in the Emerald Isle !

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple yet ...
Absolutely stunning work. I have seldom been more engrossed in such a beautiful and real story. I would love to fimd myself a character within this world. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The stinking rich along side the desperately poor
This is a story about a time in Russia when some people were stinking rich while others were desperately poor. The author does an excellent job in portraying these two different lifestyles. Not surprisingly there is a revolutionary movement afoot. Arkin, the chauffeur of Nicholai Ivanov is secretly involved with the revolutionary Bolsheviks.Valentina Ivanova, the protagonist and a first rated pianist is the jewel of St. Petersburg. Contrary to the wishes of her parents she trains to become a nurse. She marries not the person chosen by her parents but someone she genuinely loves.
The story is loaded with action but unfortunately at times the action is unconvincing. How many times did Arkin get shot but still lived? He was like a cat with nine lives.
It is also very vague how Valentina gets to the house where her handicapped sister Katya who has been kidnapped, is being held. The story about the fire and their escape is sooo unbelievable.
Sometimes the story gets too noisy and needs spacing and clarity and other times I felt it was distorted and disjointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Prequel
The Jewel of St. Petersburg is the prequel to The Russian Concubine and The Girl From Junchow. I am a huge fan of Furnavall's books and this is a great addition to the Ivanova family saga.
Furnivall has a way of bringing history to life before your eyes while telling an amazing story. Although I know little of Russia's History this book brought to life a time and place that is foreign to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Jewel of St. Petersburg
I know I say this a lot, but I really liked this book.My favorite part of the book was the setting. I love that it was set in Russia during the revolution. There was so much turmoil and unrest during this time thatit definitely added a raw grittiness tothe story. There were a lot of characters in this book, but not so many that you lose track. The story focuses on Valentina. She is from the aristocratic society whose path is already predetermined. Valentina decides to buck the system and make her own destiny. I really liked the strength of her character. She was willing to do what ever it took to save everyone she loved.Speaking of love, let's talk about the romantic aspect of this book.Valentina is expected to marry well, but she falls in love with a engineer, Jens Friis. Her heart belongs to him from the first moment she sees him, but she longs to please her parents also. This is an interesting relationship full of many complications.I enjoyed this aspect as well. The story line was very compelling and it kept me interested to the last sentence.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Historical Novel
An interesting historical novel that held my attention. It took awhile for me to get into the story but it was intriguing.I've always been fascinated with this period of Russian history.I want to read the sequel to this novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kate Furnivall's Trilogy complete!!
Fans of Kate Furnivall's work will be delighted with this latest addition to the Ivanova family saga. Delivering the prequel to the initial 2 books that followed Lydia's journey, Kate now focuses on Valentina and her own challenges through a beautifully portrayed Tsarist Russian setting. The Jewel of St. Petersburg is totally immersive as the characters and plots develop with Russia's ever present threat of revolution as a backdrop.
I really had a hard time sleeping while reading this book as it was nearing impossible to put down. This book crystallizes Valentina's motives and character which perfectly support and underpin the sequels.
Loved it!

Every jewel tells a story. Through his work at Sotheby’s and Christie’sand his own extensive research, Stefano Papi has spent years unravelingthe mysteries of Russian imperial jewelry. 3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, but superficial with factual errors
This is a magnificent book.I have never seen diamonds and aquamarines look so beautiful. The photography is great and it is a noble effort. However, I was surprised to find a number of serious mistakes in the book. For example, Olga did not travel to Yekaterinburg with her parents, it was Maria.I found a dozen errors like this, it wasn't a pleasant experience, I wanted the book to be better. The book also is ignorant of many important facts regarding Alexandra, her jewels and their fate.I would say buy the book for the pictures.Let us hope that someday we'll get a great book on Alexandra and her jewels. This is not it.

4-0 out of 5 stars more of a memoir
This lovely book is read more as a memoir than a jewelry book. Many photos are of jewels that were destroyed or lost, so the book also act as an archive of these wonderful creations. The text is very well done but with so many Marias, Alexandras and the complicated system for russian last names, a genealogical tree or guide would have been so welcomed (next edition maybe). If you love russian history or jewelry, a great addition for your library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Jewel of a book
For fans of Jessica Fletcher (and Donald Bain), Murder She Wrote: the Queen's Jewels is one of the best books in the Murder She Wrote series.Jessica's shipboard adventures include old favorites Michael Haggerty and Dennis Stanton in a suspense-filled sailing across the Atlantic. Jessica's adventure begins in London and continues at sea with mysterious characters and sinister persona. I have enjoyed this work more than other recent Bain novels, and I am sure long-time fans of the television series will enjoy the references to earlier adventures with Michael and Dennis. This book will both entertain you and keep you guessing. It's a must read for Jessica Fletcher fans. I eagerly await and pre-order each adventure.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great MSW Book!!!
This series never disappoints me!Another great story. This series is so well written, characters and places...It is so easy to picture all the details while reading..I eagerly await the next one!! If you enjoyed the TV Series "Murder She Wrote" then don't wait..Start reading!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Choppy Crossing for Jessica Fletcher
If "Murder on the QE2" was a bestseller in Donald Bain's Murder She Wrote book series, then "The Queen's Jewels" is sure to top the sales rank with vengeance. The newest Jessica Fletcher mystery is one of the better reads in the series, and avid fans will be ravenous for more.

From the beginning, the story is reminiscent of the popular TV series. First, the introduction of Michael Haggerty (portrayed by Len Cariou from the show), a British MI6 intelligence agent, enters the picture. His appearance brings a smile to the surface of things. Espionage and danger will soon follow, however, as many fans of the TV series will recall from watching the episodes in which Michael appeared alongside Jessica during her various travels. With Haggerty's interest in the case, nonstop action quickly ensues. And it doesn't let up.

Once aboard the Queen Mary 2, Jessica realizes midway through the crossing that another old friend is onboard--jewel thief turned insurance investigator, Dennis Stanton, played by the charming Keith Michell on the TV serial. Though Stanton does not get enough page time, he is a marvel to watch, as always, and his involvement in the case is limited. I would have thought he would have been better apt for the case than Michael Haggerty, considering Stanton's penchant for jewels and his brush with thievery in the past. Also, his infamous, trusty umbrella cane from the TV series is missing here. I wanted more of his character. Maybe Bain will bring him back, and the cane, in another outing. Aside from Stanton and Haggerty, the story offers a slew of other colorful and interesting characters, some toxic, which Bain paints with a deft hand. George Sutherland makes a cameo, and the moments with he and Jessica are to be savored like fine wine. When they are together, there is a side to Jessica Fletcher, a limitless spark of hope, that endears the heart. But the mystery is what the reader looks forward to. And after 34 books, the core puzzle is a great one.

"The Queen's Jewels" is a strong entry in the popular whodunit series, filled with espionage, well-formed characters, and an intense and complex storyline to die for. A fast-paced caper that will have you finishing the book in one afternoon. The ending is sad, which is an unlikely characteristic for a Murder She Wrote novel, but it works. Quite well indeed.

5-0 out of 5 stars complex amateur sleuth
Cunard offered writer Jessica Fletcher a chance to travel on the Queen Mary II from England to New York at no cost if she serves as a writing instructor.Jessica eagerly agrees and flies to London. She goes to a dinner hosted by her publisher; there she meets Kim Chin-Hwa whose partner Walter Yang bought a blue diamond called the Heart of India.

She learns the gem was stolen and Yang murdered. Jessica's Scotland Yard friend Inspector George Sutherland expects the diamond to be sold as he tells her the business partner has an air tight alibi. Also attending the party Jessica's British publisher throws for her is M-16 Agent Michael Haggerty who has come in from the cold to find the diamond. Former jewel thief now insurance investigator Dennis Stanton wants to find the Heart of India before the QM-II docks in the States. There are others connected to the stolen gem so Jessica applies her grandmotherly kindness asking questions until she concludes who is involved in the theft and now all she has to do is prove her theory.

It has been years since the show ended, yet Donald Bain still captures the essence of Jessica that makes her a fan favorite. The Queen's Jewel is a very complex amateur sleuth tale due to the numerous characters with multiple motives concerning the deceased and the jewels. In an ironic twist of fate, a notorious jewel thief on board is connected to a series of jewelry robberies that occurred just prior to the ship's departure. However, once again this is Jessica's mystery as she calmly investigates the suspects sailing with her.

[Siren PolyAmour: Menage a Trois,  M/F/M]

Since leaving home and heartbreak behind eight years before, Shelby Daniels has been very careful to keep her involvement with men about just one thing: sex. No dates, no meaningful discussions, no plans for the future. So far, it's been a pretty satisfying system, as long as she cuts the men loose once they show signs of wanting to take their "relationship" to the next level.

Then the sudden death of her uncle forces her to return to the small mountain community where she grew up and face the reason she left it behind. Two reasons, actually: darkly, devilishly seductive Gabriel MacKenzie and gorgeous, fun-loving Justin Walters, whose kisses could send any woman to heaven. Young, confused and afraid of being forced to choose between Gabe and Justin, Shelby did the only thing she could to stop their torrid tug-of-war from tearing them apart. She ran away to culinary school and never came back.

Now, a shared inheritance means that best friends Gabe and Justin will finally get the chance to prove to Shelby that she doesn't have to choose — and they're willing to do whatever it takes to show her there really is love in Three For All.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot! Hot! Hot! For All
Raina James packs a lot of story into this awesome short book.

They say it's hard to go home again and Shelby Daniels has a better reason than most. Not one, but two men fighting over her has kept her away far too long. It has also kept her from seeking love from any relationship.
When a tragedy forces her home, she falls straight into the arms of Gabe Mackenzie and Justin Walters. The two men she'd run from to avoid the tug of war they once created, are now willing to share her. With a second chance, Gabe and Justin do their level best to convince her that there is enough love for all.

I adored this story from start to finish and highly recommend it!

After eight years Shelby has to return home and face her past which includes coming to grips with the fact that she loves two men - Gabriel MacKenzie and Justin Walters.

Shelby Daniels ran away to cooking school eight years ago rather than face the fact that she might very likely come between best friends. In love with Gabriel and Justin, she is unable to choose between them and so runs as far away as she can. When her favorite uncle passes away, Shelby must return and face the two men she left behind years ago and in doing so she realizes one very important thing. She still loves and desires them both.

Gabriel and Justin have been best friends for as long as they can remember. The only person that has a problem with Shelby loving them both is Shelby. When her uncle leaves his assets to all three of them, Gabriel and Justin decide then and there that she will not run from them again, no matter what it takes to convince her.

THREE FOR ALL is an erotic look at the hard decisions that must be made to actually have a relationship involving three people.Shelby's refusal to make Justin and Gabriel choose between her and their friendship eight years ago was a grown up decision but it almost cost Shelby the happiness she so richly deserved.Gabriel and Justin's ability to love her in spite of her trepidations shows just how strong both characters really are.Add in their dreamy good looks and seduction skills and I was blushing.

THREE FOR ALL is erotic and almost innocent despite the fact that it is a ménage. All of the characters are learning how to deal with their relationship and I wish them all the luck in the world!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Books Of All Time
Anne Bishop is an extremely talented author who keeps you captivated in her books. No one comes close to her in my mind. The black Jewels series are my favorite books! And like all Anne's books contain: humor, romance, action, drama, torture. She does it all! You will not find better books than these. I have read mine over 8 times, and it still keeps me captivated!

1-0 out of 5 stars like watching a B movie
the emotional outbursts the characters would inflict upon the reader was very much like watching a B movie.the actor/character was required by the directer/author to respond to a situation but the viewer/reader is not quite sure what they are responding to. i found myself often thinking to myself "why is this person flailing about?".character development is poor.the attempt to be secretive about a characters person was taken to the extreme and left me very disinterested.now couple that with a constant stream of grotesque impossible situations.what was with someone, who can only be described as having god like power, being controlled by a ring around his organ that could administer pain?pain that he could, if he really wanted to, overcome and obliterate people? why would he not take back control for good?this is only the third book I can ever remember not finishing it is so bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book purchase I've made in a long time.
I'm a little slow, so it took me a while to get used to the caste and jewel hierarchy this series has, but once I got it, everything clicked into place and it was... bloody effing fantastic. It was captivating, exciting, insert every positive word to express how much I loved this series, and more!

A super-powered girl who has token emotional scars, and is loved by everyone who matters would normally spell a disastrous Mary Sue, but Anne Bishop has cleanly avoided that route. Jaenelle is a lovable, fleshed-out, brilliantly written character, and it's hard not to fall in love with her and her story.

Three books for the price listed is a bargain. Amazon also offers great customer support - my first shipment got lost in transit and they shipped me a replacement with no cost and upgraded the shipping speed. A++

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the genre's greatest stories...
Oh, I think is my very favorite fantasy series - if not my very favorite set of books altogether! I just love it so much! It still makes me laugh and cry even after all these years of re-reading it! It is such a darkly beautiful story. And I am looking forward to the newest addition, though I have a bit more re-reading to do before I will be reading that! As for this omnibus edition itself, this was my first time reading it here and I must say, it had one major plus of containing the whole trilogy in one place. But, that one place made for a rather awkward and heavy volume that was rather uncomfortable to carry around or curl up with. I think that my mass market copies are superior for comfort, though I am not sure how many more re-readings they can make it through!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good even if you are a cook!
I come from a long line of Italian cooks-and I am a good cook, even have the fluffy hubby to prove it. ;) Yes, the recipes are simple-but they taste good and get you thinking outside of the box. This isn't just for people who don't cook much. I think a lot of people can benefit from learning new ways to spice classic foods. It would have been better in cookbook form, but that's okay. I love the simple dressing recipes and especially the favorite soup recipe. Of course I have changed the recipes up a bit, as a real cook would do. Especially a cook in a small town where lentils aren't easily found. Use these as a springboard for a healthy lifestyle and adapt them to your family. I am always looking for healthy with a twist, and I am using this book, so it was money well spent.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book, only one thing missing.........
I was so excited to recieve this cookbook. The book is great .Lots of beautiful pics that will make your mouth water! My only disappointment was that there is no serving sizes or calorie content for any of the dishes.I have recently been working hard on losing weight and trying to get my family to eat HEALTHY.Though this does fit the bill for healthy eating, I am alittle nervous to make the dishes without knowing the calorie or fat content.I sent a email to them in request to information in regards to this, a few weeks ago, and still have not recieved a reply back. That disappointed me too.So, if you just want a good cookbook for healthy eating, this one works. But if you are concened with going over a certain calorie goal, you will not find that kind of information in this book.Hope this helps.

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't get it
I'm glad I got this book from the library first - I suggest you do the same. I paged through this cookbook two different times and the only recipes that caught my eye were for salad dressings. I have other healthy cookbooks and this one offered nothing noteworthy to me. I was surprised to find such basic recipes asmashed yams and quesadillas. Maybe it would be helpful for a beginner. The one plus - there are plenty of nice pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it!
I love this book, the recipes are easy to follow and the pictures are gorgeous. I've already made the celery soup and the salmon with maitake mushrooms and turned out delicious!

This is the next amazing installment of the Black Jewels series that neatly ties in storylines from the previous books and provides a more in depth look and our favourite characters. Couldn`t put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dreams Made Flesh
The Anne Bishop "Black Jewels" series is complex and wonderfully written."Dreams Made Flesh" continues in the surreal rhelm with the continuation of the different character stories you 'need' answered. They are a great escapism into a fantasy world where good versus evil.....

1-0 out of 5 stars the darkness was not merciful
This book is a supreme let down after the first three, which were excellent, dark and mysterious. All characters fell flat, in each story, except maybe the first, but come on, it was about a spider, not even yet kindred.
Jaenelle's midnight voice is tiresome and over-used and Daemon and Lucivar have spent so much time on the killing edge and killing field that it is truly ridiculous. The characters go into violent rages over petty things. It seems that Bishop must have been drunk or something while she wrote this one, and I can't understand why the editer let it pass. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A Jewel in His Crown
This book is well written and entertaining. However, I felt like the author does a lot of name dropping causing the reader (who may not know all those "famous" people) to wonder if the author is genuine in who she knows or if she is overly proud of who she knows. And although the book quotes a lot of scripture, keep in mind that the entire book is the author's INTERPRETATION of those scriptures. Some are more stretched than others, but it is based on opinion. But with all that said, if you can see past that you will pick up a few tips on self esteem and seeing yourself as God sees you.I do think there are better books out there though, at least I hope so.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR WOMEN
I really enjoyed reading this book.It is written in such a way that it would be easily enjoyed by young ladies as well as older women.A must read for all females!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I thought
This book was ok. Seeing all the reviews here on Amazon made me have high expectations, since it was all 4 and 5 stars. Some people said it was life changing...I wouldn't go that far. If you want something that has the same message but is more inspirational, read a Michelle McKinney Hammond book. She says similar things but in a fun, uplifting way that actually makes you feel good about yourself and have a renewed zest for the Lord. I don't think I'll reread this book. I gave it two stars because it has a positive message that women should hear, but there are other books that can say it better.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT DEVOTION/BIBLE STUDY
ONE OF THE BEST COMBINATION DAILY DEVOTION, BIBLE STUDY AND JOURNALS I HAVE EVER USED. IT GOES BEYOND SURFACE STUFF BUT GIVES YOU ENOUGH DEPTH FOR A DAILY TIME WITH GOD. IT'S WELL WRITTEN AND CHALLENGES YOU TO TAKE ACTION EVERYDAY TO LIVE AS A JEWEL IN GOD'S CROWN. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for All Women - A Must Read
A JEWEL IN HIS CROWN is a delightful study into a woman's life and her place in the royal court of God. Both the book and workbook provide an in-depth exploration of issues relevant to a woman's life at all stages and her relationships with all people.

Shirer points out that women are Royalty, and they need to look for their place in God's Court. As daughters of the King, women should put on their own crown and at once take upon the qualities of one in a royal court.

It is vital for women to claim their inheritance. If they don't' they block God's purpose for their life and insult Him by trying to be someone they are not.

Though the book or workbook can easily be used separately, together they provide a more complete tool.

The book(s) are filled with topics, which encourage women to be women, to glory in their likeness to God, and to embrace the fact they were specially fashioned by Him.

The book version includes in each chapter: a study, a prayer and a list of things to consider.

The Journal is unique. Chapter by chapter, it accompanies A JEWEL IN HIS CROWN perfectly. Questions, quotes and scriptures are designed to bring a woman's gem-like qualities to the surface, where they belong.

Shirer relates her own difficulties in relationships and then later, candidly shares the important lessons she learned from overcoming the trials.

Both books are rich with tools to bring all women into the glory of their womanhood.

Audience: A JEWELL IN HIS CROWN, the book and journal, is suitable for teens and young adult women. Older women will benefit as well, as the knowledge extracted from these books will teach women about their value as a woman, and prepare their spirits, mind and bodies for the man God has chosen for them. By doing so, and applying the principles in the book and journal, unmarried women can then enter into a married union with the fullness of grace God has provided, with the man God has selected to be their groom.

Either book, or both as a set, would be an appropriate gift to a young woman in her teens and can aid all women in their journey as God's woman.

Married and older women as well will enjoy the set and be able to deepen their understanding of their place in God's Kingdom, their place on the earth, and their place in other people's lives.

Product Description
A Pulitzer Prize winner makes her debut for young readers.

Abby Lovitt has been riding horses for as long as she can remember, but Daddy hasn't let her name a single one. He calls all their geldings George and their mares Jewel and warns her not to get attached. The horses are there on the ranch to be sold, plain and simple.

But with all the stress at school (the Big Four—Linda, Mary A., Mary N., Joan—have turned against her) and home (nothing feels right with her brother, Danny, gone), Abby can't help but seek comfort in the Georges and the Jewels, who greet her every day with soft nickers. Except for one: the horse who won't meet her gaze, the horse who bucks her off, the horse Daddy insists she ride and train. Abby knows not to cross her father, but she knows, too, that she can't get back on Ornery George. And suddenly the horses seem like no refuge at all.

From Pulitzer Prize winner Jane Smiley comes an emotionally charged and action-filled novel for young readers, set in the vibrant landscape of 1960s California horse country. ... Read more

Abby is one busy seventh grader.Between school, church, and her family's ranch, there is little time for much else.

Abby can't remember much about her life before the horses that her family raise, train, and then sell. The mares are all named Jewel, and the geldings are called George. Her dad feels that if they each had individual names, it would seem like they are going to stay permanently.

Still, Abby can't help giving some of them special names.

Jack is an unexpected colt whose mother died shortly after his birth.Abby immediately feels a connection to him and wants to do all she can to ensure his survival. Then there's Ornery George, who just can't seem to be tamed.Abby's father doesn't understand her fears and wants her to show this horse who's the boss. With a stranger's help, can Abby make this horse into a gentle giant?

Each chapter in this novel features illustrations relating to horses. This was an excellent tale set in the 1960's.Anyone interested in horses and ranch life would enjoy it, and it's also appealing to others, as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Children' books
One would expect Amazon to indicate that books are meant for children. This is not so. So I bought a wrong Jane Smiley book because of the author who I admire.

5-0 out of 5 stars Georges and the Jewels
Abby helps her father with the family business: buying and selling horses. This feels like it used to be a fairly smooth operation, but Abby's sixteen-year-old brother recently left due to differences with their father, putting all the work on Abby, who is facing down Ornery George, the first horse she's genuinely a little afraid of. Abby's dad is determined to train all of their horses to the point where "a little girl could ride them," and Ornery George is light years from this goal.

Meanwhile, a new girl has arrived in Abby's small seventh grade class, creating drama with the Big Four, a group of girls that rule seventh grade with an iron fist. Abby is a girl who can only be described as nondescript. She keeps her head down and minds her own business, keeping silent when she sees things and ignored when she tries to bring anything up. Stella, the new girl, stirs up trouble without even trying, and drags Abby into it both as a buffer and a scapegoat, all for the attentions of a boy that finds wonder in discussions about bologna sandwiches. Abby just wants to get through seventh grade, keep the one friend she's got, and get a good grade on her Catholic mission model without her born again parents finding out and having a fit.

Oh, and she also wants to figure out Ornery George, who is a long way from help. The book does a nice job with Ornery George. There aren't any quick fixes to be applied to his character, and Abby is not the sole person responsible for his training. She's a good rider, but she's inexperienced and frightened. Not to mention, Ornery George has her number. The descriptions of the training they put George through are nicely done, and I actually followed a lot of it, which means I can give this book bonus points for making sense. Like I said, no wacky sudden revelations will be found here. Ornery George is a slow but steady student, and Abby is an easy kid who is falling into the business of buying and selling horses without really realizing it.

The one qualm I have with the book is what felt like a loose end regarding what happens when Abby's parents find out about the mission models the school is having the kids build. There's a string of religion in the book that abruptly comes to a frayed end, with Abby getting worried about her father Bible thumping one of her teachers as she looks on helplessly. I didn't expect the religion aspect to come to some great enlightened ending here, but there was something about it that felt unfinished.

The rest of it, however, finishes quite nicely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific book, particularly (but not only) for young horse-lovers
Fabulous story of a hard-scrabble stable in California, in the 1960s, where all the horses are named either George or Jewel.Seventh-grader Abby is the narrator, and what a great voice! She's the daughter of strict Christian parents, and a down-to-earth and no-nonsense young horsewoman.Along with exercising the horses, raising an orphaned foal and staying out of the way of "Ornery George," Abby deals with the "Big Four" (the "in group" of girls at school) and various other issues and adventures.THE GEORGES AND THE JEWELS had one of the most even-handed portrayals of religion in any book I have read recently. While showing the constriction of Abby's family's faith, it doesn't belittle it, nor hold it up as a good example. The pencil illustrations at the start of each chapter add tremendously to the reading experience.I will be recommending this book, and sharing it with others!

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I purchased this book for my grandchildren who love horses; unfortunately there was too much family dysfunction and radical religious rhetoric to risk giving it to innocent children.
In the past I have made mistakes buying books, but never have I been so outraged by the content. The constant reference to some homemade religion where, "the men" did the preaching, "there was no minister."
The little girl could not tell her parents about a school activity of building "mission" replicas at school as an assignment on learning how California was settled because of the "wrongful history of the Catholic Church."
The eldest son had been "kicked out" of the home, and his mother has to sneak around to see him. Most of the family time was spent tiptoeing around a father who was, "righteously angry or resolute in his determination or dedicated to rectifying evil."
Also racial profiling and discrimination, "Did this boy who has a Mexican name and therefore is probably Roman Catholic witness to you while you were working together? " And the final straw for me was this remark;"The thing is, the Roman Catholic Church is a great and powerful enemy. Our great and powerful enemy. It has done many things over the centuries to our people and to its own people that are not easy to speak about."
I wish so much that I could return this book and get my money back. It is so sad that religious prejudice was part of this book, I saw no way in which it enhanced the story of the horse training, which was also done at times, behind the fathers back. Definitely not a book for children. ... Read more

Product Description
A prequel set in the “dark and sensual world”( 11th Hour) of the national bestselling Black Jewels Trilogy.

Jared is a Red-Jeweled Warlord bound as a pleasure slave by the Ring of Obedience. After suffering nine years of torment as a slave, he murdered his owner and escaped—only to be caught and sold into slavery once again. The notorious queen who has purchased him, known as the Gray Lady, may not be what she seems. Soon, Jared faces a difficult choice: his freedom, or his honor.Amazon.com Review
In this engaging story of Jared, a Red-Jeweled Warlord and unwilling pleasure slave, Bishop returns to the world of her Black Jewels trilogy (Daughter of the Blood, Heir to the Shadows, and Queen of the Darkness). Jared, who has murdered his owner and attempted escape, is recaptured and sold to the mysterious Gray Lady. It soon becomes clear that Jared's new queen is not what she seems to be, and he joins with his fellow slaves--all of whom hide their own secrets--to protect the Gray Lady. During her desperate flight from Dorothea SaDiablo, the Black Widow intent on destroying her and claiming her territory, Jared comes to terms with his own demons and discovers what it means to be truly bonded to a queen.

Bishop uses her usual skill to move interesting, rounded characters through a well-drawn world. Although this is a standalone book, there are ties with the events of the trilogy, most especially the appearance of the compelling Daemon Sadi. The author still pulls no punches in describing the sexual violence and misery that are as much a part of this intricate world as the gender role-reversals and the often-agonizing demands of honor and magic. A pleasurable read for fans of emotionally charged fantasy who enjoy both complex characters and societies, and who are not averse to following characters through their struggles and achievements. --Luc Duplessis ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Least favorite book of the series.
I love the Black Jewels series. I've read the trilogy, Dreams Made Flesh, and Shalador's Lady repeatedly, over and over and over again but never tiring of them, and Tangled Webs and Shadow Queen to a degree.

But this book was just a tl;dr explanation of The Spell used in Book 3, and not a very exciting one at that. Everything was mediocre. The threat, the plot, the characters... To be perfectly honest, if I were a new fan reading this prequel as a first introduction to the series, I wouldn't have given the rest of it a second glance.

And Anne Bishop COULD DO BETTER. Cassidy and Gray from Shadow Queen and Shalador's Lady are a lot less powerful than Lia and Jared, but they provided more entertainment and were more interesting. I found myself wishing for Lia and Jared's journey to end already and I couldn't wait to finish the book so I can say I've read it and put it behind me.

This is one BJT book I'm not going to be re-reading, and I only hope no new fan judges the series by this book alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prequel, not sequel in the Black Jewels series...
This was the first time that I have re-read this book and I think I enjoyed it much more the second time around. The first time, I think I was too busy being disappointed about the absence of so many of the major characters and with Daemon's "guest star" status. That, and the fact that this is more of a prequel than the fourth book in the series... This time, I enjoyed the story more. It is a good story and I'm excited to re-read one more Bishop book before reading her newest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Introduction to the Jeweled World
First of all, it is my opinion the book would have been more appropriate if introduced between Daughter and Heir.Since the timeline occurs before the birth of Jaenelle, it would have been a better way give depth to the Dorothea and Daemon characters and their adversarial relationship.

The attractions of this story were the rustic setting (which I think Ms. Bishop did a better job of presenting than in the 3 preceding books), the power of the characters (none overwhelming, and some even a hindrance to the journey), and the care taken to give the main characters depth.Jared was a compelling protagonist, as his power did not overwhelm his vulnerabilities.True, his jewel was the darkest among the principals of the story, but his lack of experience in channeling that power and his emotional scars were a great counterbalance for the storyline.

Though the Lia and Blaed characters could have used more fleshing out, Thera's and Garth's presence was wonderfully written throughout. Talon was the ideal model for the concept of a Warlord Prince Ms. Bishop conveyed in her previous efforts (and continues to be in Shadow Queen). Many Black Jewels fans may not agree with me, but I believe this was perhaps the strongest book of the 4-book series, since the power of the protagonists did not overshadow that of their enemies. This led to a conclusion that required the heroes to overcome with a combination of wits, luck, and then, finally, raw power.

In conclusion, one personal note:I approve of the last book of the series (Shadow Queen), drawing on the storyline presented in Invisible Ring and also giving added dimension to the major characters of the previous series, and look forward to Shalador's Lady to be released in a few days.Good work, Ms. Bishop!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Story
I'm an avid reader of specific genre's, I loved this book, great story, magic mayhem, mystery, and romance. Definitely not for younger readers. Perfect trade off between Laurell K. Hamilton (Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter Series) purchased in waiting for Laurell's new book release.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thinking of this as a prequel
I read the Black Jewels Triology some time ago and could not believe how good it was. When I saw this book at the book store the other day I picked it up thinking I'd really like to experience the Blood world again. I won't give a synopsis as so many other's have done that beautifully in their reviews. What I want to talk about is why I rated this book 4 stars. I really think it deserves a 3.75....my reasoning? This book was very slow to get started. Not to mention that it took Jared a minute to get over the pleasure slave mentality(like the whole book) and Lia to come into her full strength. This was very frustrating for me because in the Triology all the characters are strong blood warriors and strong queens or black widows, they just simply radiate power, no weakness is evident anywhere, not really.

In this book, the entire group is wounded, beaten down and uncertain. But as the story continued and I stuck with it, I found myself becoming entranced in the world again, especially when the action started heating up and Daemon Sadi made his entrance. Once I was hooked it took me about a day and a half to finish and I couldn't resist re-reading the triology again. Anne Bishop is an excellent writer and I love this world of the Blood and the jewels, this story was different, but for all of that it was good. Amazon refers to it as book 4 in this series, but really...in my opinion I think it should be considered Book 1 as it happened 700 years before Jaenelle was born in Daughter of the Blood. Good point of refrence for insight into Daemon Sadi and Doreatha SaDiablo too. I'd say this is worth reading, because it is a precursor to a triology that for lack of a better word, just ROCKS!!!! ... Read more

In this violently passionate, "darkly fascinating world,"** the Blood rule: a race of witches and warlocks whose power is channeled through magical jewels. Ambitions unfurl in this second novel of The Black Jewels Trilogy, as the realm's dreams of a liberator have finally been made flesh...

Jaenelle, singled out by prophecy as the living embodiment of magic, is haunted by the cruel battles the Blood have fought over her-for not all of them await her as their Savior. Nothing, however, can deflect her from her destiny-and the day of reckoning looms near. When her memories return. When her magic matures. When she is forced to accept her fate. On that day, the dark Realms will know what it means to be ruled by Witch.Amazon.com Review
Anne Bishop plunged into dark fantasy with her first book,Daughter of theBlood. She described a world where Blood Witches have alwaysruled, drawing males to their courts through seductive power. Anambitious High Priestess destroys more powerful females beforematurity and has enslaved the strongest males, weakening magic andcorrupting natural bonds between men and women. Sexual violencepermeates Terreille. Jaenelle, born to be Queen, is vulnerable untiladulthood. Though guarded by male Warlord Princes, Jaenelle isviolated. Daemon, her destined Consort, rescues her but is convincedhe attacked her and goes mad.

In Heir to the Shadows,Jaenelle's vampiric, adoptive father, Saetan, and her foster-family ofdemons shelter her. To restore her memory and emotional balance, theymove to Kaeleer, where Jaenelle befriends the kindred--animals withmagical and communicative powers--and gathers a circle of youngQueens. She also heals Lucivar, Daemon's half-brother, who offers abrother's love and a warrior's fealty. As she recovers strength andmemory, Jaenelle resolves to restore Daemon and cleanse Terreille.

Bishop subverts readers' expectations; the "darkest" powers reside invirtuous characters, demons and vampires are kindly, and Jaenelle'sadolescence is more comically normal than horrific. Her vibrantcharacters and descriptions will keep readers hooked, anxiouslyawaiting what promises to be a riveting conclusion. --Nona Vero ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
I honestly don't review books very often on here, despite being an avid reader. Usually I come here to read other trusted reader's opinions on books that fall flat, or exceed expectations. This books however, has many mixed reviews.

After reading great novel's with strong heroine's as the leading role (Tamora Pierce, Kristin Cashore, Robin Hobb), Jaenelle really falls far from the tree. The first book was really spectacular, probably because ( which many readers have already said), of Daemon. He really carries the story in the first novel, through his insights and love for the Mary Sue Jaenelle. I am 3/4 the way through this second book, and as I go through, I find myself having to go back sometimes a hundred pages to understand what is precisely going on. This book is very disjointed, one minute you are watching Jaenelle stride out of the hall, fiercely determined to rescue Daemon, and the next she is...married? poisoned? and you don't even know why she was there in the first place? I had to go back an reread just to make sure I didn't miss something in the book, because this seemed incredibly disjointed. Then there is the huge battle seen that they just stumble into, and I can't help thinking, why isn't anyone concerned with Daemon and how he is supposedly very close to being lost forever? There is no sense of a time-crunch, ever, in this book. Bad things just happen and then they are fixed, and nobody even stresses terribly about the bad things, just this somewhat spoiled queen (Oh no, she has a sad look in her eyes! Certainly that is much more pressing than your lost mate and all your other problems). I'm tired of reading about all the males who fall head over heals for this undeveloped, shallow character. She has no character flaws besides the fact she was raped, which I don't even consider a flaw, so much as a trauma. It's completely unrealistic, and it doesn't leave you loving the character. After reading the reviews for the rest of books here on amazon, I'm really tempted to just quit while I'm ahead, because it seems after the first book, all of the following are a disappointment.

It really is a shame, to have such a great start and then just have all your characters floundering through scene after scene. I wish Anne Bishop had spent more time editing this book, or re-reading it, because certainly then she would have realized the mistakes she made, and maybe would have provided us with a more suitable sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully wicked world
I picked this series up as a teenager about 10 years ago. I loved it then, I love it now (I just rebought the series, my brother stole my last set). It's so easy to get lost in this world.

if you've read "DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD" and it left you hanging- you are going to love this book- so many stories in a story. I wouldn't recommend them (black jewel trilogy)for children under age thirteen simply because there are some sexual parts in the books. Also, the sellers i purchased these from are great - I bought these from amazon and they all arrived in great condition and cheaper(even with shipping) than the ones at the used book store.

Product Description
A classic text on the path to God through knowledge. The basic teaching is that God alone is the all-pervading reality; the individual soul is none other than the universal soul.

According to Shankara, it is the ignorance of our real nature that causes suffering and pain. The desire for happiness is essentially a longing to awaken to who and what we truly are.

Through the path of self-knowledge, Shankara clearly teaches how to awaken from ignornce created by the mind, and abide in the peace of our true nature. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shankara,S Crest Jewel of Discrimination
Excellent book. For those students of the path this book offers a very real and thought provking perspective on the essential subject of discrimination and other related topics. The text is well written and clear. Very Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Definition/Description of God
We are currently witnessing a spate of atheistic and agnostic, generally scientistic, denials of the existence of God (Often perceived as appropriate responses to the ongoing onslaught of machinations of the fundamentalist media). Alongside these inceasingly popular books, we have a lengthening list of works which approach religion and the objects of its concern from a phenomenological standpoint, materlialistic analyses tracing what amounts to a "natural history" of God, or God as conceptually conceived. How can one adopt the pretense of attempting to study God when one's attention is focused on the ever shifting sands of temporal/material existence, where the mind is kept ever flirting with one image, or illusion, after the next?
I beg all of the authors of these books to turn now to this venerable masterpiece - The Crest Jewel of Discrimination, which gives a precise and comprehensive description of the nature and existence of God: ". . . beginningless, endless, immeasurable, unchanging, one without a second . . . pure existence, pure consciousness, eternal bliss, beyond action, infinite, omnipresent . . . cannot be grasped since it is transcendent . . . cannot be contained, since it contains all things . . . without parts or attributes . . . subtle, absolute, taintless, indefinable, beyond the range of mind and speech . . . reality itself, established in its own glory, pure, absolute consciousness, having no equal, one with a second . . ."This extract may serve the prospective reader as an example of the succint yet comprehensive analysis given here. The book is, as always in the style of Sankara, eloquent in its spare and direct rendering and clarification of the most obsessively mystifying, often abstruse and yet essential subjects. The translation here, of 1947 vintage, is justly celebrated.
Wisdom is revealed on every page - remarkably, every question the devoted seeker might ask is answered in detail and, best of all, the reader can carry this diminuative treasure trove anywhere - the ultimate distillation of Truth in a mere 150 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-Duality Teaching of Shankara
The Crest Jewel of Discrimination teaches about Atman and Brahman, and how they are the true existence. Everything else is illusion. Atman and Brahman are a state of non-duality, which means that our physical existence is not real. It is the equivalent of a dream. Our life purpose is to realize the Atman, the Self.

The teachings of Advaita Vedanta are meant for everyone. Even though Shankara was a Hindu philosopher, this is applicable in every religion. A Course in Miracles teaches non-duality as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for those on the spiritual path
Shankara's Vivek Chudamani is a classic text orignally written in Sanskrit and is a must of anyone on the spiritual pathway to enlightenment (Hindu/Buddhist pathways). It makes you take a hard look at your beliefs and practices, social norms and customs and helps you separate the wheat from the chaff. Swami Prabhavananda and Christoper Isherwood have done an excellent job of translating it into English. The translation is easy to read, although the material is by no means a light read and is meant for someone who is serious about the pathway. It is a great book to read again and again as your awareness grows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foundation book of non-dualism
In my library Shankara's Crest Jewel of Discrimination (Viveka Chudamani) is the companion of Narada Bhakti Sutras. They are equally essential. 5-0 out of 5 stars great read
This book was a great ending to the original series set in the Black Jewels world. It had a satisfying ending that was not rushed to.

5-0 out of 5 stars I can re-read this series
I usually can't read fantasy or sci-fi twice, but I've read this author at least 3 times now and still find more things to enjoy. Each time I felt sad when the story ended. Bishop has fun dialog and great human(or Blood) interaction without turning it into a "love story". I read my boyfriend a passage and he thought that I was making it up to prove a point about a "you stole the covers" conversation we had just had a few days before. He read it for himself and laughed for 5 mins. He's not a reader but he likes the character interactions and the story so much that he asked me to read the books to him.
I feel my point is made. Read the "inside look" and see if you like it as much as I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO AWESOME!!!
What an incredible finale! No spoilers here, but read the Black Jewels Trilogy! My ultimate favorite series ever!

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT
WHEN I STARTED READING THE FIRST BOOK OF THIS TRILOGY(DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD), I THOUGHT THE PLACES, SOCIAL RANKS, RACES ETC. WOULD BE TOO MUCH TO REMEMBER.AFTER STICKING WITH IT FOR THE FIRST FEW PAGES, I DIDN'T WANT TO STOP READING IT.IT IS A GREAT STORY.NICELY WRITTEN.COULD'VE USED A MAP TO START WITH, BUT IF YOU LIKE WITCH, WITCHCRAFT STORIES YOU'LL LIKE THESE BOOKS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Queen of the Darkness
QUEEN OF THE DARKNESS is a terrific conclusion to the original Black Jewels Trilogy. A marvelous continuation of the trials and tribulations with The Blood, Kindred, and Landens. Jeanelle is faced with more hard choices that as usual leave Saetan, Daemon, and lucivar snarling and grinding there teeth. Be sure to read this book after DAUGHTER OF THE BLOOD, and then HEIR TO THE SHADOWS. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Just OK
Well 1st this is a Re-Release, it was actually book two in the series, which I did not know when I bought it, I thought it was a new addition to the series.

In a nutshell, the hero Grayson is a sex-addicted adrenaline junkie human (who has all the traits of the atlantean warriors even before he gets them legitimatly through weird fight/dream scene. He was not an endearing character until almost the end of the book. The no-name heroine "Jewel" had a lot of potential of being a well written character but it never flowed smootly, she evolved and devolved respectively throughout the book.

Without giving away too much, there were too many aspects that were harped on but not satisfactorily explained and the ending had a good battle scene, and then a split of the hero/heroine with a WTF coming back together.

Luckily I have read subsequent books already, becase while reading this book I really did not care for any of the Atlanteans of any of the races.

It was not horrible, just really not great either.Later books were better.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not up to her standard
This book was terrible! I usually like her books but this one was so poorly written and just plain stupid!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
I LOVE Genea Showalter and have read everything of hers I can find. This is the second book in Gena's Atlantis series and was worth reading.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very boring read
For some reason could not get into the storyline or the characters. Too much stuff happening all over the place with no real relation between any of it. The characters are unbelieveable and the situations were so forced. The concept could have been good but somehow got all lost and boring. Read all 4 books in this series only because I got them all at one time. Will not be reading anymore Showalter's stuff.

3-0 out of 5 stars Book 2 In The Atlantis Series
Gray James is sent to Atlantis through a portal to find the Jewel of Dunamis. His employer, the Otherworld Bureau of Investigations, discovered a book detailing the many dangers native to Atlantis.Unfortunately for Gray none of them took the book too seriously. After being hunted by vampires and demons, Gray knows that all the information was correct. When he's in a tight situation someone suddenly speaks to him in his mind and helps him make it out alive.Gray isn't sure whether he can trust the woman who speaks to him, but he makes a bargain to save her anyway.

I read this book quickly and found it very readable, but I can't really say that I'll ever want to reread it.I found both of the characters very shallow.Right from the start Gray comes off as a bit of an old fashioned control freak. He always has to be the one to save the day and if it becomes necessary to accept help from someone he beats himself up over it to an irritating degree.Jewel comes off a bit like a fourteen year old.She is insanely naive (even through her experiences seeing the surface) and throws herself at Gray again and again even when he is hot and cold with her.

It was frustrating watching Gray come up with excuse after excuse of why he couldn't be with Jewel.I personally thought the whole living in two different worlds excuse was good enough, but obviously not.For a while there every couple pages he would come up with something new and be totally serious about it.It really added melodrama to the story.I was also really frustrated that Jewel losing an ability with Gray was brought up but it was never really explained why that happened.

Even though I didn't enjoy the characters that much I did enjoy the world.I liked the take on Atlantis and all the explanations of the beings that lived there. There was a lot of action in this book and it was very fast paced. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars too idiosyncratic
well, i'm plowing thru this book. i think while it has a lot to offer, it's also all over the place. while 20 years ago i might have enjoyed this book with all it's authors idiosyncracies, i think nowadays it needs a rewrite and editing. it's not just a primer on tantra, but it seems to want to be all things philosophical, eastern/yogic as well. i guess if i didn't already know a lot of these things from hatha yoga i might find it more valuable.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Jewel and the Lotus
No other English book on Tantra captures the complete essence of the practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars The standard bearer of sexual enlightenment.
I'm not much into this whole Tantric thing, just dont have the patience for it and honestly I dont think I could keep a straight face through all the ritual of heart salutations and stuff. However, this book contains vital information on physiology and response that I have not found elsewhere.

Yes, there are breathing exercises, basics on chakras, mudras, and all that but there are also massage techniques, pressure points, and crucial data on the G Spot that can be incorporated into a normal routine that will become anything but normal. I credit this book with the creation of my own "Triple-Play" and that's one you'll just have to figure out for yourself.

Read this book, and apply its teachings to your own sex life. Forget about all this Tantric hoodoo and Kundalini, you won't find instruction on the Cobra Breath in here anyway, just howl at the moon. 5 Yonis

5-0 out of 5 stars kriya yoga tantra student
I'm currently a student of Kriya Yoga and this system, and found this book to be the building block of a solid pratice.I definetely recommend for the sincere student, I will not defend this work from humans as it was meant for human beings.I would say that you should research the authors and find out about them before buying this book if you have doubts.Simply put Sunyata Saraswati was a student of kriyananda(Chicago), Jaradan, and Satyananda(who taught him tantra). All of these teachers are from the Kriya Yoga tradition and traces back to Babaji.Bodhi Avinasha was a student of Sunyata and Osho, which should clarify her statis, I look forward to meeting her soon.Tantra is neither light or dark, it is both if any, which in reality is just a reflection of the goodness or evil in the practitioner.Never fear it and know that those which are meant for tantra will always find it, and those that aren't will gentle flow away from it.Namaste, with the love of mother(Shakti)!!!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Deception!
This book presents to the hungry soul a technique for awakening the Kundalini based on ejaculating the sexual energy through the orgasm. What they do NOT tell you is this:

"Man and woman can use sexual intercourse and the delights of love and kisses in order to become Gods or Demons.

"From the dawn of life, a great battle has raged between the powers of Light and the powers of Darkness. The secret root of that battle lies in sex.

"There is the correct interpretation of the mysteries of sex.The White Magicians never ejaculate the semen. The Black Magicians always ejaculate the semen.

"The White Magicians make the igneous serpent of our magical powers ascend through the medullar canal. The Black Magicians make the snake descend towards the Atomic Infernos of the human being."

(Quoted from The Perfect Matrimony by Samael Aun Weor)

This is why our humanity is suffering so much, and why life is truly getting more complicated and more painful: because we ignore the mysteries of sex, and we want to take our animal desire with us to heaven.

Do not be deceived by the illusion of desire: conquer your animal nature, and you can elevate your spirit.

For more information on REAL Tantrism, read the works of the Dalai Lamas and the works of Samael Aun Weor.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Duty and Treasure of Contentment
Jeremiah Burroughs (1599-1646), was a member of the grand Westminster Assembly as an Independent (Emmanuel College graduated 1624; preacher at Stepney and Cripplegate, London), and in "The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment" he offers a scripture-based practical book for edification and sanctification. This volume was written to encourage joy and faith resulting from the reception and application of solid doctrine.

Often within the vicissitudes of mundane life one loses sight of important truths as one's contentment decreases. Herein this towering Puritan instructs the reader in the necessity and means of attaining and practicing contentment.

This is an outstanding and useful book for the modern teen (he may need assistance in understanding the text) or adult, if you, like most believers:

- base your happiness on present conditions
- grumble and complain
- lack joy in life's daily work and pleasure.

Philippians 4:11: "Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content."

Other works by the author:

- "Commentary on the Prophecy of Hosea"
- "Learning to be Happy"
-and many others.

Burroughs' treatment of the subject of contentment focuses on the cause and fruit of the sin of petulance and complaining that so easily beset Christians as he provides Bible-based solutions that will promote reasoned and heart-felt obedience in the believer as the faithful embrace ongoing contentment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment
I read this book overy 25 years ago and was so impressed that I wanted it in Kindle form.Very helpful, but also very deep. I sincerely wish everyone could know the contentment as presented in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Christian contentment?Look no further.
To discuss the subject of discontentment is vitally important, particularly in our day where the diagnosis of depression is sky rocketing all around us.Burroughs is not afraid to tell us that discontentment in a Christian is sinful and unacceptable.Yet he does not leave us hanging - rather Burroughs tells us real Scriptural solutions to the problem; solutions that we will never hear from popular psychologists.

2-0 out of 5 stars You'll need to be discerning here
In Philippians 4:11, Paul says, "I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am"; he will not be swayed by the afflictions of living with much, or living with little--giving note to the fact that there are heavy afflictions in both circumstances. This is the subject and the work of Jeremiah Burroughs in his classic text, The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment. Originally published in 1648, Contentment later underwent some language modernization and was most recently republished by Banner of Truth as a part of their Puritan Paperbacks series.

I finished the text today and have some mixed feelings regarding Burroughs' thoughts on the topic. Burroughs' text focuses on attempting to unpack Paul's words to the Philippians. What does it mean to be "content"? How can that be achieved? What are the implications upon a content person's life? What if we're not content? Burroughs answers all of these questions quite clearly--sometimes too clearly. Unfortunately, at times his answers, well, just aren't really satisfactory considering the evidence.

Burroughs begins by defining contentment. After reading the first chapter (slowly), there was still a bit of ambiguity concerning what exactly it means for a person to be "content". I ended up attempting to draw conclusions of Burroughs' definition from the coming context of the book. Unfortunately, it still wasn't especially clear. It seems after finishing the book that Burroughs' means to say that contentment is a sense of being okay with, satisfied in, not needing more than, whatever physical circumstance we may find ourselves in. This seems to be a relatively obvious interpretation of Paul's words to the Philippians, however, Burroughs doesn't always sound like that's what he means when talking about contentment. Perhaps its generational.

Burroughs flows through a kind of rocky path of exploration. He begins with a definition of contentment, flows into how mysterious and miraculous a thing it is (although, doesn't seem to designate it as something Christians can exclusively enjoy), then moves into the modes of teaching Christ employs when instructing his people. Following that, he goes on to explain the `excellence' of being content. Up until this point, I tracked quite well and often added audible "hmm" noises to my reading. Following his bit on contentment's excellence, he moves into the sin of not being content, or as he puts it, the sin of a `murmuring' spirit. It's at this point that things began to swing a bit out of balance--at least in terms of the whole of scripture.

Burroughs makes the point well that contentment is a duty. We ought to fight for it, seek it, labor to attain it. It is also convincing that to be discontented is sinful and we should not be okay with that kind of ingratitude. Unfortunately though, Burroughs' bit on sin, unlike many of his contemporaries, seems never to really call back to the work of Christ on the cross. Frankly, I was a bit astonished. He had a great deal to say about God's wrath and his wrath poured out on the discontented, worldly heart. But strikingly little to say about the great ocean of wrath poured out on the dying Jesus on behalf of his bride, who would undoubtedly struggle to achieve contentment all her days.

His definition of `murmuring' is also a bit unclear. At times it seems that he means some deeper heart condition that is out of rest and ungrateful toward God. However, at other times, it seems that his definition might mean something more like complaining. At times of the latter, it's hard not to call to memory David's psalms, which are flooded with complaints.

When finally emerging from those chapters on the evils of discontent, Burroughs' returns to more useful discourse. Namely a conversation about how people regularly will excuse themselves from guilt in discontentment, followed by a clear and practical discussion of how to achieve contentment.

Much of Burroughs' text was convicting and inspiring. Some of it was discouraging and frankly, out of balance. However, while I disagree with a good chunk of his thoughts, even in the midst of questionable things, there are to be found nuggets of really good insights. I think unlike some of the other books in the Puritan Paperbacks collection, this one may be written more directly to its specific time period. Not that contentment isn't ageless duty, but rather his method and tone may not be suited well for all time periods.

Because of my own reservations, I don't recommend this book unless your up for the challenge of discerning and scrutinizing the text. If that is something you're up for, there's some excellent insight to be gained here. If you're not up for that, may I recommend anything written by John Piper; God willing, the intended effect will be much the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars best book I read in 2007
The Rare Jewel of Christian Contentment is the best book I read during 2007.It caused me to think about whether I was really content with the circumstances God had given me or not in a way that is not the common teaching heard in this century. It was originally written in the 1600s so it takes concentrated thought to read it but it is a great way to take your mind off the exercise bike at the gym. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
An overview of the Buddhist path.

In Jewel Ornament, it says that reading teachings from Gampopa is the same as receiving teachings from him, and truly I think that is the case- this book not only gives you words, but also a strong blessing to develop towards enlightenment. It has been said that anyone who fully understands Jewel Ornament fully understands Mahayana Buddhism.

After reading this book, my Buddhist view is much more complete, and feels as though it will not let me down, as it's based on understanding rather than just words.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only for practicing Buddhists
This book is suitable only for practicing Buddhists as it lists a lot of what constitutes good karma and what constitutes bad karma and the consequences of each. Many of the consequences are repetitive, thus making this book resemble a law book. In addition, the author extracts the same point from many other texts, thus making it once more very repetitive. The list is not elaborated further, thus raising a lot of questions. This book surely must be read with a guidance from a teacher.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book when you know how to read it
I tried to read Gunther's translation of Gampopa's classic, but was unable to relate to it.If it weren't for Ken McLeod's podcast of his Then And Now class (www.unfetteredmind.com/audio, then go to the Classes dropdown), this translation would fair no better with me.Ken's podcast classes are helping in my developing an experiential relationship with the subject matter. This book, although written in medieval Tibet, deals with the questions of human confusion and struggle that impact us today, and provide direction on freeing us of this confusion and struggle, especially when Ken's podcasts are used as a study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect English reference book on Buddhism
I found this book is very useful for my buddhism study, the chapters are arranged in a very organized way. the contents are consise and accurate, it is like a notebook for most of the buddhism concepts and principles.

I really like it, and appreciate the English translation. it's great!

Product Description

New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh weaves a sensuous spell of romance that brings together the unlikeliest pair of lovers in the unlikeliest place of all–an infamous London house of pleasure.

She was unlike any woman he’d ever met in the ton or the demimonde. But Sir Gerald Stapleton frequented Mrs. Blyth’s euphemistically dubbed “finishing school” for pure, uncomplicated pleasure–and nothing else. So why was this confirmed bachelor so thoroughly captivated by one woman in particular? Why did he find himself wondering how such a rare jewel of grace, beauty, and refinement as Priss had ended up a courtesan? And when she needed protection, why did Gerald, who’d sworn he’d never get entangled in affairs of the heart, hasten to set her up as his own pampered mistress to ensure her safety–and have her all to himself?

For Priscilla Wentworth, the path leading to Sir Gerald’s bed had been as filled with misfortune as it suddenly seemed charmed. But Priss couldn’t allow herself to believe she’d ever be more to a man like Sir Gerald than a well-cared-for object of pleasure. Now, despite Gerald’s deep distrust of marriage, neither scandal nor society’s censure can keep them apart–only the fear of trusting their hearts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Precious Book, to be Read again and again!
I have read this book several times, which is rare for me. I love the traditional virgin heroine of historical romance, but this was even better. This novel was unique and heartwarming, it brought tears to my eyes more than once..

Sir Gerald Stapleton, visits a whorehouse and meets Priss. He continues to see her at the brothel several times a week until he notices that Priss has been abused by another costumer of the establishment. Gerald decides to keep Priss to himself, as his mistress.

Priscilla Wentworth is a woman down on her luck after the death of her father and brother. She must sell herself to survive the streets of London. She finds herself fantasizing that her most frequent customer, Gerald, is her husband when they couple. The relationship becomes even more complicated now that she is his mistress.

This story brings me to tears each time I read it. I think I can relate to the feelings of being unworthy and afraid to speak up. Priss is used time and again, but still continues to be her loving self, not bitter as you would expect. Gerald makes me angry time and again, but when his childhood is told all is forgiven. I fell in love with this story, and would recommend this book to anyone who loved historical romance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Starts out slow but really grows on you!
This was my first by Mary Balogh and at the beginning I was unimpressed and really didn't like the un-hero.I didn't like the sex and was really wondering where the hell it was going.Thing is I read it through and ended up really enjoying it.Both the characters grow and you start understanding why things were the way they were.I am impressed how well the author paints their stories and came to like both of the characters greatly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as other Balogh books
As a long-time fan of Mary Balogh's books, I was delighted to discover this "new" one. However, much as I appreciated the novelty of the romance between a gently-bred prostitute and the lord who loves her, I found the dialogue to be very clunky and simplistic. It simply did not have the sound of how people really speak, er, spoke in the Regency period.

I did think about Gerald's character, which was presented as not very smart and very unworldly.I wonder if MB was thinking that he had dyslexia and that is the reason he had no early ambitions for higher education. That would also account for the amount of time it took him to understand his estate's records and accounts. And maybe this accounts for his insecurity with his peers although I found it hard to believe that at his age he would be so unaware of the nuances of his world. His lack of success at Oxford could have resulted from either dsylexia or a learning disability. After all, not everything is new in the world even if the label is rather new.
SPOILER ALERT;
Like some other reviewers here, I wonder what the marriagebetween Gerald and Priscilla will be like once she is free to be Priscilla Wentworth. Will she take over the estate's accounts? publish her book or love poems? sell her paintings? In fact, she is quite terrifyingly competent and accomplished and it seems likely that Gerald would become even more insecure once she is fully revealed. On the other hand, perhaps her background as a prostitute will suffice to balance the scales. Or they could remain in the country for their whole lives.....no, not likely, given her desire for culture. MB has certainly given the reader full rein for imagination.

1-0 out of 5 stars Yuck!
this is the first Mary Balogh book i picked up, it will be the last! i could not even read through the whole thing.i was so mad... what a crapola hero and beyond submissive female. just lay there and don't move for sex? beyond selfish. he needed a prissish wife then, not a mistress...yuck!
i could not take this.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best "coffee table" book I've ever read
I bought this thinking I would just see a lot of pretty pictures. Not so - They are BREATHTAKING, and the text really explains what was going on when these jewels were being worn.I find it amazing that the Soviets kept most of these jewels intact, but, for the most part, these are full color up-to-date photos recently taken, and Prince Michael gives all the background to make them really important and in context.I read this staying up late, and in the next morning, and really LOVED it.BRAVO, Prince Michael!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not dissappointed.
This was my first purchase on Amazon. I read all the reviews and comments and was inspired to purchase the book immediately. To my amazement all of the comments were true. Before I even opened the book I knew it was of high quality, it certainly is a gorgeous book in terms of colour, cover, binding etc. It covers a the reign of Catherine the Great to Nicholas II. Each section on a ruler is accompanied witha light but informative biographie, full sized painted portraits and a close shot of the jewels craftedduring their reign. There is a insightful photograph of the Imperial regalia. Towards the latter rulers theere are photographs of some royal family members I have not seen online. Best of all there is a section named "After 1917" . This section has some interesting information along with photographs of various Russian royals (wearing jewels) and the royal jewels that have survived the revolution. If you are looking for a book with large full page colour photographs with text regarding their owners and origin. This is the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahh , The Romanov Jewels
Wow,

upon receiving this book, i couldn't put it down! Each page has beautifully photoed pics of endless diadems and emeralds! In fact, i got so worked up with the pictures that i didn't bother to read most of the small intros for each piece of jewelry. I would have to say, my most favorite part of the Romanov dynasty is Nicky and Alexandra ! Alexandra and her mother in law (DAGMAR, the dowager Empress Maria Alexandrovna) have the most stunning jewels i can imagine! Each picture has a small bio of where the jewels are or whether they survived the revolution as most of them have disappeared which puts me in a bad mood. But being on the positive side! I would recommend this to anybody who is in-love with the stunning mountains of jewelry the Romanovs once owned which of course would out do any other dynasty including the British empire.

This book is wonderful and addictive . LOL

Very Special thanks to Prince Michael of Greece who made this book come alive!
