Awesome Read, Needs ti be a Set
This was an excellent book for learning how to theme Wordpress! It shows you how to theme a "child" theme for a theme framework, which is how most of the actual themes are built that are on the market today. The only downside is, if you do not know a thing about CSS or basic HTML you will be terribly lost. Luckily, I've been doing this stuff since I was 10. Another book to pick up from SitePoint is Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS, 2nd Edition which will explain a little more indepth about the inner workings of the theme's code (colors, links, text, images, etc.)

A very well done and much needed effort on WordPress theme design
There are maybe 25,000,000 people using WordPress to power their blogs and websites. (There are still lots of people who don't know that WordPress is a surprisingly powerful Content Management System.) Not everyone will be interested in designing their own WordPress themes. There are thousands upon thousands of free and commercial themes already available.

So why would you want to design your own theme? Because you want to? Because it truly personalizes your offering?Because it is a challenge?

Whatever your reason, this is the book that will teach you step by step how to design a WordPress theme. The four authors cheat a little bit here by stressing using a "theme framework", that is an already existing theme. Purists may eschew this approach, but the rest of us gain definite advantages by working with something that already exists.

You will need a knowledge of CSS and PHP. Knowing HTML wouldn't hurt.

The four author approach, which I had reservations about work out well, with each author handling a separate and distinct subject.

The book is beautifully designed, as are many Sitepoint books, profusely illustrated and the example coding (of which there isn't much) seems to work.

Overall, if you want to learn how to design WordPress themes, from almost the bottom-up, this is the book to study.

Gets you off to a good start, but...
This book gets you off to a good start developing custom themes for Word Press, but I quickly got beyond the scope of this book when developing my custom theme. For example, the book suggested using the Thematic WP theme as the framework upon which to build my theme, which I did. Once I got into the details, such as how to move the sidebar from right to left and how to add a div to the header, the book kind of left me hanging.I suppose that it's too much to expect that much detail from a book like this, though.

Great Book On Wordpress Themes
I can't recommend this book any higher than it is the best book on creating wordpress themes EVER!

A Great Way to Learn How to Create WordPress Themes
WordPress is finally in its 3rd version and is the most popular blogging platform on the planet. Everybody you has used WordPress goes through the process of picking a theme that shows what their blog website is all about.

But what if they want to create their own theme?

There are lots of themes out there to choose from, and most are free but none totally give you the flexiblity of being exactly what you want for your own website unless you build your own from scratch.

There are lots of online resources out there, but none cover the full gambit of themeing design, graphic design, theme templating (child themes), widget development and much more.

The book is very precise, easy to read, lots of visual illustrations, and has lots of great resources and examples.You dont have to be a graphic designers to understand how to develop and design themes and this books makes it easy for anybody at any skill level.

Sitepoint has always authored great books on design and development topics and this book on WordPress Themeing is no different.

Lots of information, but a bit disjoint
I am a business school student and used this book for a project.I found much of the information to be useful, but not very specific.It touches on all the major issues, but does not really go into detail.I guess that is to be expected as you could probably write volumes on each subject.

I would reccomend this book as an introduction to M&A, but it is not to be used as a reference for each specific area.

Also, the book is written by several authors with different styles.That means that there is often overlap in the things that they talk about and no consistency in writing styles.Not a horrible thing, but at times a bit distracting.
