5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book... my sister is named Jennifer Jones
I bought this book as a unique gift for my younger sister, who is named Jennifer Jones. This is one of the cutest gifts I've ever gotten her, and I included it as part of a birthday present for her.She loved it and was shocked to find her name as part of this sweet children's story. She traveled through Europe and had adventures, too, in the way the character Jennifer did.I used to tell people "Jennifer Jones won't leave me alone" as she was my pesky little sister. Her boyfriend thought the book was very funny, too, when he read it, and he teased her about her "chasing" him into submission until he went out with her.Although in reality he had chased her as she was so sweet and endearing.:)(His words)I think the story is incredibly cute and also wonderful if there is a Jennifer Jones in your life as there is in mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charming
I came across this book at a consignment store and bought it for $1 without even reading it as my hands were full. One of my best friends is named "Jennifer Jones" so I couldn't walk past without picking it up.Originally I planned to send it to her, but it's just such a cute little rhyming story with a nice rhythm to it that I don't want to give it up!My 6 month old seems to enjoy the illustrations as much as I do.Instead of passing on my $1 copy I came here to order my bestie a brand new one!I think it'll make her day.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Cute!
My children love this book and so do I.The little boy's reactions to Jennifer's amorous advances and then to her absence seem realistic and are very endearing. Another cute "kissing" book to check out is "The Good-night Kiss" by Astrid Mola.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have Worth every cent!
I came across this book while volunteering at a childrens book fair. I just fell in LOVE with it and had to buy it for myself! I have no children, but have read it to my nieces and they loved it too! I am proud to have this 'childrens book' on my bookshelf!

5-0 out of 5 stars SUCH a cute book!
This book is perfect for young children and the young at heart.Adults will love it as much as their children.I read it with first and second graders. They sympathized with the narrator's "Ewww, a girl LIKES me" feelings, and they giggled when he changed his mind.Boys and girls had different reactions over whether or not the narrator should tell his friends of his change of heart.

In a time when children would rather turn on the TV than listen to a good story, this one won over the crowd. They even asked me to "Read it again!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a rare biography
This is a very well written and well edited biography. Not too cerebral and not too simple. I've probably read at least 100 biographies of movie stars, mostly of classic movies and this one rates up there as one of the best. I've realized that an interesting subject does not necessarily make for an interesting book but this one does justice to both. Jennifer Jones lead a long, varied and unusual life with plenty of tragedy.Epstein does a great job of covering everything: the making of her movies, her personal relationships and personal quirks. (When you read of how wasteful and extravagant she was with beauty cream and nylons, you'll die!)Portrait of Jennifer

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful! but.....
i found this to be a wonderful book beautifully written by the author, but there is one thing that is sadly lacking in the book, thats miss jones refusal to speak to the author, i have a question that i'm burning to know "why did she get involved with david selznick? was it love or merely her burning ambition?" throughout the book you never get a feeling of true love between the two, it was as though they were both using each other, but other than that question the book is informative and a great read- zero boring parts!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Towering Portrait of Jennifer Jones
I have to say that this book is a many-splendored thing. Finally, a bio on Jennifer Jones!

I remember the very first time I ever laid eyes on Jennifer Jones. I was probably around 8 or 9 years old and it was the NBC broadcast premiere of The Towering Inferno. I started watching it in mid film and saw this white claded woman running through a smoke filled hallway and banging on the door.

Needless to say, Jones was one of the few people who actually acted in the disaster epic and I was a Jennifer Jones fan from that day on.

Portrait of Jennifer is a biography on Jennifer Jones, the only other bio I know of is called Star Crossed, a book on Jones and her erstwhile husband Robert Walker. But this book concentrates solely on Ms Jones herself. This is a shame. It seems of all of the stars of yesteryear, Jennifer Jones is often the most overlooked and ignored. When the New York Rockette had their first Black performer, also named Jennifer Jones, nobody made the connection. It is a shame, but this book remedied that and gave Jennifer Jones the recognition she deserves in writing.

The author originally contacted Jennifer Jones for her participation in the book, which the former actress respectfully declined. Thus the book is mostly from hearsay and second hand accounts....but however, the author still managed to paint a fascinating portrait of the actress.

Born Phylis Isley, the book traced Jones' vaudeville childhood, to her marriage to Robert Walker. She was then discovered by David O. Selznick, which lead to her Oscar winning performance in The Song of Bernadette. She and Robert Walker became the star couple in Hollywood...which ended with her marriage to Selznick and her divorce from Robert Walker. Robert Walker's life was pratically destroyed after Jennifer divorced him and ironically, it seems Jennifer's promising film career was stunted (albeit unintentionally) by Selznick, who was so obsessed with her that he limited her roles mostly to romantic leads.

The bio also went onto Selznick's death, Jones' suicide attempts, her marriage to her Norton Simon, and a comeback to the movies which was aborted with the tragic suicide of her daughter.

There are also some background info on her various movies, and fans of "The Towering Inferno" may be interested in some tidbits in the book, such as Jones provided the material for the gown she wore in the film (white silk that costed around a hundred bucks a yard...and I am talking about 1970 dollars!).

In any case, after reading the book, Jennifer Jones came across as most of her onscreen roles: a seemingly timid and frail woman who possesses a high degree of strength and independence.

I hope that she realize she still has fans out there, and I wouldn't mind seeing her in a movie again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading
I was named after Jennifer Jones, so I naturally had curiosity about her life. When I found a copy of this book, I bought it and read it in a matter of a few days.Jennifer Jones was a much more fascinating personthan I had anticipated.Although I found the book to be a little murky onpresenting a time/context of which events occur (particularly in relationto her first husband, Robert Walker), the book is overall very interestingand gives the reader an enthralling portrait of this great actress. ... The book I purchased from was received in a very timely manner and was in excellent condition when I received it. I would definitely purchase from this seller again (thebookdude)

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved this book!
I enjoyed reading this book. It was not dull and very informational! I think I am a little spoiled because my other books are not as well-written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Workplace success...
This book has all sorts of information that will help any group of people working together get along better because of a greater understanding of different kinds of people.

3-0 out of 5 stars not for MBA students
This book was required for an MBA class. It is more suited for undergraduates. It does not encourage deeper thinking or analysis appropriate for the graduate level.

The book is strong in theoretical understanding but weak in management applications. It is nice to be able to list the names of motivation theories, for example, but the authors seem uanble to provide criteria one might want to consider for policy decisions.I wonder if this book is by and for academics who have no real life work experience but need to publish or perish.

End of chapter supplementary articles are only from the New York Times.Although the book's introductory material lets us know how wonderful this is, a greater variety of source material would enhance the overall effectiveness. After all, the book does speak of diversity.

To its credit, the book is reasonably readable and does not overwhelm us with too much esoteric academic speak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book. Must have it, if you are studying Org. Behavior
A colorful introductory textbook on organizational behavior that integrates concepts, theories, and research findings to examine individuals in organizations, groups and organizational processes, and inter-group relations and the organizational context. Case studies illuminate concepts and provide managerial implications. There is a diversity of heuristic features, some integrated into the text and some at the end of each chapter or part.

Great book. Must have it, if you are studying Organizational Behaviors (OB).

Also, this book is well known to many of top ranked universities in Graduate Programs (MBA) and No. of copies this books have been sold are in few hundred thousands !!! (@ 380,000 copies) justifies it's strength and quality of knowledge as well.

Product Description
The United States is relying heavily on private firms to supply a wide variety of services in Iraq, including security. Based on the information available in published sources, this is the first time that the United States has depended on contractors to provide such extensive security in a hostile environment, although it has previously contracted for more limited security services in Afghanistan, Bosnia, and elsewhere. This book summarises what is currently known publically about companies that provide personnel for security missions in Iraq and some sources of controversy surrounding them. A treatment of legal status and authorities follows, including an overview of relevant international law as well as Iraqi law, which currently consists primarily of Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) orders that remain in effect until superseded. The various possible means for prosecuting contractors under U.S. law in civilian or military courts are also detailed, followed by a discussion of possible issues for Congress. This is an edited, excerpted and augmented edition of various government publications. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for researchers
The Greenwood Bio-Bibliography series of books offers valuable information for researchers and others interested in locating printed information about film stars. It gives detailed lists of magazine articles, books, newspaper articles, etc. with information about the content, photos, etc. of each article. The biography is brief (under 100 pages) but very well written and engaging and is good for those looking for a general synopsis of her life. For those looking for a juicy biography with more content, you will probably want to look elsewhere (actually the only full length biography of Jennifer Jones so far is "Portrait of Jennifer" by Edward Epstein). 3-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for the sexist message
I don't mind that the woman knows she's "a good wife" because she has gathered lots of food for her family, but it upsets me that her husband is mean to her after she makes a mistake in not respecting the bean mouse.I quote from the book:

"You foolish woman," cried her husband, "Hunka has punished us all for your greediness. You stole from the Bean Mouse, and now look at what's happened! You don't deserve your husband, who provides you with so much. You don't even deserve your poor, helpless children."

In my family, we try to see our mistakes as opportunities to learn, and I cannot read this page aloud to my children. We would never attack each other's worth, even for a large mistake that effects all of us.It's too bad, but because of this page I returned the library book and chose not to buy an otherwise excellent story of the importance of respecting all life.If we cannot expect husbands to speak with respect to their wives, then how can we expect people to treat mice with respect?

5-0 out of 5 stars A well told tale
I really enjoyed this book!It is a great tool to teach children about sharing.Children will find it easy to understand and the illustrations are great.Teachers will find it useful to teach students about the PlainsIndians and some of their customs.A detailed explanation about the miceand the original tale is included, as well as a glossary. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a biography should be!
Jennifer Vaughan Jones has written a compelling page-turner of a biography that is as gripping as a novel. The depth of her research and the connections she makes between people in the worlds of music and literature are commendable. While the book clearly tells the story of a woman who lived at a time when women were without rights and were the property of their husbands, Ms. Jones does not fall into the trap of making this story a hardline feminist rant. She maintains a realistic balance throughout, treating her "characters" fairly and perceptively.Even people who have never heard of Anna Wickham will find this book fascinating.Very highly recommneded

5-0 out of 5 stars A simply fascinating biographical study
Anna Wickham: A Poet's Daring Life by Jennifer Vaughan Jones (Viterbo University) is an informed and informative biography of the trailblazing female poet Anna Wickham (1883-1947). When Anna's husband felt threatened by her poetry, he had her committed against her will to a mental hospital. Yet it was within those restrictive and alien confines that Anna was stimulated to write eighty moving poems, and find the strength to flourish as a literary creator. Anna eventually separated from her husband and found an (unfortunately unrequited) love for Natalie Clifford Barney, a lesbian American millionaire. Anna Wickham: A Poet's Daring Life is a simply fascinating biographical study and presentation enhanced with exclusive interviews with members of Anna Wickham's family and a newly discovered written correspondence. ... Product Description
When you're the shortest guy in the sixth grade, standing tall isn't easy.

Michael Jordan does not play basketball. He's not named after the Michael Jordan. In fact, he doesn't resemble an NBA player at all.

Michael is the shortest boy in his grade, which is a problem for someone starting middle school. As if being the only boy sitting in the front row of every class photo isn't bad enough, his younger sister Emma loves pretending that she is his twin-and everyone believes her.

Needless to say, Michael worries that the journal entries he must write every week for literature class will immortalize a very bad year. But then an amazing thing happens-Macy, a pretty, blond eighth-grader, starts being very, very nice to him. Why she would go for a shorter, younger guy is a mystery, but Michael isn't complaining. He just enjoys getting tutored by her (even though he doesn't need it) and seeing her at his older brother's soccer games. Who knows where things could go from there?

Jennifer B. Jones's funny, upbeat novel perfectly captures a boy's nervousness about middle school, girls, and learning to stand up for himself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Characters!
Having always been the shortest one in all my classes for just about "forever," I could readily identify with the main character Michael Jordan as he enters middle school, the shortest one in his class.I loved all the characters--especially Michael's homeroom teacher Mrs. Preston and her insightful comments in response to Michael's journaling.A positive message and a delightful read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful, Readable Story
It's not easy to be a short kid with a tall name like Michael Jordan. But that's the plight of the main character in this humorous, lively book. As he struggles to adjust to middle school, Mike learns more about himself, his family, and girls. Though there are real issues explored in the story--some through a journal Mike keeps for his English teacher--the humor and love Mike shares with family and friends make this a gentle, charming book appropriate for all kids. I think it would lend itself well to the classroom (especially, Grades 4-6)as a fun read-aloud or for booklists, and would certainly be a great way to introduce journal writing to students. ... Product Description
Literary short stories by established and emerging writers.

Excerpts:

Ingrid Hill
Pavilion
A tent maker has just completed a job for the army, the construction of several officers' tents for field maneuvers. He is carrying brown canvas, a color just a little too rich, a little too beautiful, for the army. But dye lots are irregular. What can one do?

Jennifer Anne Moses
Duty Free
He remembered a time when he was maybe eleven or twelve when he'd suddenly been seized by the conviction that he was going to die, and soon, too.

Horatio Potter
Summer Help
Hiram wondered if these infestations and the twisting of weather were somehow connected to the newcomers, the sweeping in of unknown people filling the once wide-open spaces with the many things they owned--SUVs and four-door pickups, camper trailers, ATVs, motorbikes, horse trailers, trout boats, canoes--the entirety of leisure retail splendor.

Christine Sneed
Twelve + Twelve
Someone in the alley three stories below my window was calling out to someone else, and what he was saying was not very nice. Maybe he did it because we were all stuck in an ugly, listless March, ice visible everywhere and clinging to our lawns like a dense gray scum.

Matthew Salesses
The Grief Ministry
Pages of grief ministry research were spread out on the floor around me, near Sue Ellen's bed. I was asking God to help me be a better first responder.

Noa Jones
Brother Ron
He was a steady man, meaty but refined, carrying his large frame with delicacy. Fish bones in pudding.

Nam Le
Interview by Jennifer Levasseur and Kevin Rabalais
I don't want any of my stories to be a proof of me getting a place right. That's not what the stories are about. But neither do I want to give any well-meaning reader the opportunity to be jolted out of their suspension because I didn't get the place right.

Judy Troy
Cactus
On the third night his symptoms returned; he stopped breathing, and Beverly resuscitated him, which she wouldn't have had she been able to see the remaining eight months of his life. But she hadn't been able to see.

Randolph Thomas
According to Foxfire
The hogs had been nosing the trough, expecting breakfast, when we walked up. My uncle was right behind my father, and the hogs seemed to sense the men were up to no good.

Carmiel Banasky
Dinner in Diaspora
"We didn't light the candles." "We drank wine," Savi laughed. "We didn't say the prayers." "We'll do it next week, Ava. Don't worry."

Pamela Sutton
Tamer of Horses
Nothing in Philadelphia is plumb: the sidewalks; the doorjambs; the floors; the windows; the trim; the walls; the ceilings, which go a different way from the roofs; the chimneys; and the corkscrew staircases holding everything together. If you twirl up and down those stairs enough times for enough years you forget where you came from and can't recall where you're going.

Charles McCarry
Interview by Kevin Rabalais
I suppose I'm old enough now to admit this: My fiction is in some ways an attempt to explain my life to myself. I'm not Christopher and Christopher is not me, but we did a lot of the same things.
