Still the best bio in Gene Kelly
Even though Hirschhorn gets the birth date wrong, this is still the definitive biography of Gene Kelly.

Perfect and honest biography
This book by Clive Hirschhorn did an excellent job of giving every fact a Gene Kelly fan needs to know. I love that there is no "dirt" on Gene Kelly, and Hirschhorn does not try to pretend there is. A well written bio. I highly recommend this to anyone wanting to know about the fabulous Mr. Kelly.

A fascinating read!
I could not put this book down. As a life-long Gene Kelly fan who first became entranced by his talents as a child watching "Singin' in the Rain," I can't imagine a better way to gain insight into my screen hero than this book.All of the key players in his life are contributers through interviews (including Kelly himself.)It is a stimulating read from the first page to the last.Now I am trying to find a copy to own!If you have one to sell, please contact me.

I love Gene Kelly

I Liked This Intro to an Amazing Life
It is sad that the errors that were noted by the other reviewers have marred the book. I did not know they were there and so what I got from this book was this fantastically gifted man and the passions of his life. This compact life is really full of drama. The monologues, debated in other comments, are based on the things Kelly expressed in other ways, as I understand it, but they weren't necessary. I was not bothered by the concise description of the many long years of fizzles and disappointments in Kelly's later life. I can recommend this book as a very enjoyable read, and quite good for young readers, but it seems clear a big, fat, long, unimpeachably correct bio would make a lot of other people happy.

How on Earth...
The most startling thing about this book is that it actually got published. It would be an understatement to say Alvin Yudkoff is not a legitimate biographer. It's been a few months since I read this book but I seem to recall that there were little to no primary sources. The bulk of the book is Yudkoff's use of quotes from other written sources which undermines Yudkoff credibilty as a real biographer.

The author hangs his tenuous narrative on what he imagines Gene Kelly is thinking as he sits throughhis AFI tribute. Yudkoff, in turn, takes enormous license. These "memories" are the basis to go back in time to begin the history of Kelly's life. Yudkoff never acknowledges that his narrative is anything but fact. Kelly comes across as a bitter and negative man if we're to believe the imaginary narrative the author has created. Yudkoff refers to Kelly's dislike of Cary Grant. The only reason this might be, Yudkoff tells us, is because Grant questioned the validity of Kelly's relationship with his first wife, Betsy Blair. This is never backed-up with a passage or quote from anyone. Is Yudkoff now claiming the same capability with Grant, that he can read his mind as well?

Reading this book I found myself asking: what is it that Alvin Yudkoff may have in common with John Keats? Oh yes, one thing, they both wrote when they were on opiates. Too bad Yudkoff didn't share any of Keats genius for writing.

And as many have mentioned before, the author truncates the book by just dropping most of the narrative about Kelly's life after his second wife Jeanne Coyne died. A half-written life is not worth reading. Better to read Betsy Blair's biography. Both husband and wife come across as two fascinating human beings.

This book should be in the fiction section.
I have never read such an atrocity in my entire life. This "biography" by Alvin Yudkoff is filled with so much inaccuracy and conjecture I started marking the pages where I could prove his information was wrong. There were at least a hundred post it notes by the time I was done. I even turned it into a paper for my film class- proving how inaccurate this biography is. I got an A. All the proof you need is to watch any of Gene Kelly's movies, read his ex-wife Betsy Blair's autobiography, or read Clive Hirschhorn's biography. Yukoff even took direct quotes from Hirschhorn's book and twisted them around to suit his own agenda. Unlike Yudkoff, Hirschhorn DID personally interview Kelly and his friends.
And it was so maddening to read while Yudkoff purported to know directconversations between Kelly and his family and friends, or the thoughts running through Kelly's head while at the AFI celebration of his work. I can't figure out why someone who claims to be a fan would churn out such drivel and paint the fabulous Gene Kelly as a horrible person who thinks he's better than everyone. I have read other biographies of Debbie Reynolds, Stanley Donen, and Betty Garrett and I am not fooling myself into thinking Kelly wasn't fallible. I realize he had drive that was hard for other people to take, but NO ONE else painted him out as mean just to be mean. Just as a man dedicated to his craft. Yudkoff should never have written this book of lies.

Shamefully shoddy......
I have my own personal barometer to indicate whether or not a book is second-rate (or worse).I start counting the typos, and when I hit "five," I officially distrust the author/editors.I hit five by the third chapter and knew I was in for a bumpy ride.This author should have concentrated on spell-checking and fact-checking, rather than obsessing with his thinly veiled,homophobic assertions (as mentioned by another reader, his repeated reference to "Leo McCrary" nearly made me hurl the book across the room!).This really was a maddening read, and it is hardly the biography that the great Gene Kelly deserves.Makes one even sadder to ponder that Kelly's own autobiography was lost when his house burned down in the 80's.That would have been a helluva read.

I'd throw this away if I hadn't gotten it at the library
I'm currently only up to page 175, and for the first time in recent memory, I'm giving up on a book. I've wasted way too much time on this piece of utter garbage. I have to thank the other knowledgeable and discerning reviewers here on Amazon for making me realize that there's just no point in continuing with this thing.

From what I've actually managed to get through, it's clear that Yudkoff is many things, but, first and foremost, he's a bad writer. No, strike that: He's a horrible writer. One thing I've always felt is important with biographies is accuracy. Not Yudkoff. He seems to value contradictions and poor research. How poor? I just read the section about HUAC, and he expressed great disdain for director Leo McCarey. He had several paragraphs about him, and mentioned his name numerous times. Now, if you're going to mention someone over and over in your book, one would think that you would at least research him enough to get his name right. Yudkoff calls him Leo McCrary.

The inaccuracies aren't the worst part of the book, by far. Yudkoff seems to be a Communist sympathizer, and that viewpoint is one of the main thrusts of his book. A couple years ago, I read Myrna Loy's autobiography. She was one of those who let her politics run her life, instead of the other way around, and every opinion, encounter and experience was tinged/tainted by her political view. She seemed to have a desire to bed every man in Hollywood, but only if they were a "good Democrat." As awash with politics as her book was, though, it pales in comparison to the hammer and sickle-waving contempt for all things right of Lennin found here. Combined with the glaring inaccuracies (not to mention the outright libel in some passages--Yudkoff takes courage from Cary Grant being in the grave to state his rumored homosexuality as fact), it's impossible to take this book seriously, and nearly impossible to take it at all.

One thing that's essential when reading a biography is trust: you have to be able to trust the author and his account of the person's life, otherwise it's a wasted effort. Very little of what Yudkoff writes--outside of direct quotes (and even those are suspect based on his glaringly poor fact-checking)--can be accepted as fact. This book was clearly written with an agenda, but unfortunately, that agenda doesn't seem to include an accurate retelling of Kelly's life. Avoid this like the bird flu. ... Read more

Wonderful Book
I really thought this book was great! If you are a Gene Kelly fan this book is for you. It has little tid bits about Gene that a fan would want to know. Gene Kelly- A Celebration mostly talks about the movies Gene made and his contributions to the movies. Great pictures also.I highly recommend buying this book.

A great book about THE MAN
This book is a must for all Gene Kelly fans.It has wonderful pictures of him, and allows you insight into his life.This book describes the making of each movie that he made.Buy this book, and I'm sure you won't regretit.

Too Many Photos, Not Enough Story
The other reviewers have said what I am going to say:There just is not enough about Gene Kelly's life in this book.It's a little TOO "celebratory".Any conflicts that arise between him and othersat the time are glossed over as Kelly doing no wrong.Some of his failuresare presented as if they did not create a problem for the star, yet anyonewho has lived on this planet (so then everyone) KNOWS that Kelly's failuresand difficulties were probably not as ho-hum as the authors would like usto believe.In their attempt to be respectful of the venerable star, theytake us sometimes for fools who have not experienced life.I'm onlytwo-thirds of the way through the book, but it does not seem to me they aregoing to mention the fact that Kelly kept Michael Kidd from becoming morethan he could have been, speculated by some to be the result of jealousyand insecurity about the competition Kidd offered.Also, several ofKelly's famous dance numbers are referred to as "the mostremembered", "his biggest", "his most famous","his daringest", etc.Well, they can't ALL be that.Thisindulgence in hyperbole is reminiscent of a "That'sEntertainment" film.The photographs are wonderful, but the book'slayout creates an awkardly cumbersome book that is too heavy for what itcontains, and just doesn't "fit" well on your lap when reading inbed, nor does it carry around well when moving from room to room in yourhouse on a lazy Saturday when trying to enjoy your book.I know that seemspetty, but reading is an entire experience with a definite ritual.Theshape of this book interferes with that coffee-and-pajamas-on-the-couchritual.It's just too heavy and could have been easily condensed intosomething smaller and more manageable.Nitpicking aside, read this if youare a Kelly fan.It's a delightful journey back in time.

Colorful, but not entirely comprehensive!
Initially, this book is very alluring. Now, i'm not one to "dog on" anything affiliated with the legendary icon, Gene Kelly... However, this book is less than PERFECT.It contains many wonderful pictures, as well as commentary(nowadays, the "bare-minimum requirements of any "celebrity tribute" book), but lacks in-depth information about the artist.In that sense, this "celebration" does not do Mr. Kelly justice.Mr. Kelly is great, the jem of americana.Sadly, this book is only half as pristine.

A fantastic book on a fantastic man
I am so ecstatic that they finally have a book out there all about Gene Kelly.. The pictures are great.It's well worth your time to order it.. I am such a HUGE fan of Gene Kelly, he is the ultimate cure for the blues, him and chocolate Forever sigin' In The Rain.. :o) ... Read more

A nice paperback overview
If you can find a copy of this book, it's a short but sweet biography which concentrates on Gene Kelly's film career. Since it is part of the Pyramid Illustrated History of the Movies series, that is to be expected.

You'll find plenty of black and white photographs and reviewsof Kelly's films. The book was published in 1976 so it understandably endswell before Mr. Kelly's death. For a more in-depth look, I'd suggest eitherClive Hirshhorn's biography "Gene Kelly" or Tony Thomas's"The Films of Gene Kelly." Considering that there are only a fewbooks about Mr. Kelly that have been published, this is well worth pickingup if you're a fan. ... Read more

Not Free SF Reader
A reasonable collection of fantasy, with a 3.55 average.The best stories being Garth Nix's very funny and clever giant monster short, and Laird Barron's horror piece.

There is a quite brief piece by the editors about the state and source of stories in general, and each individual tale is prefaced with further info.

Bizarre and beautiful
YEAR'S BEST FANTASY 6, edited by David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer, is an engaging anthology of the absurd, the fantastic, the beautiful, and the horrifying, comprising twenty-three stories written by some of the best in the industry. The tales range from light and whimsical, as in "Still Life with Boobs" by Anne Harris, to dark and chilling, as in Laird Barron's much-acclaimed novella, "The Imago Sequence," which has been nominated for the World Fantasy Award in the long fiction category for 2005.

The book comes in with a tiger in Yoon Ha Lee's elegant parable "Eating Hearts," and goes out with a tiger, in Connie Willis's smartly crafted homage to H. L. Mencken entitled "Inside Job." Off-putting
There were crystalline jewels of insight - Perfect Moments, to borrow the author's terminology, such as his wife's observation that "when you are motivated by fear, you are not able to see the best path -- whether in death or in life."

Unfortunately, their number was insufficient to counter-balance a narrative that I found off-putting in its tone, which often felt didactic to me, and if not that, then so striving for perfection in Mr. O'Kelly's dying process that it almost became competitive.

I also didn't like the occasional comparisons between how well Mr. O'Kelly died versus others, who evidently didn't do it as well. Or how character or moral defects were the reason why some resisted Mr. O'Kelly's unwinding protocols.

I found it difficult to reconcile the author's attempt to let go and to unwind his worldly ties in beautiful and meaningful ways, with a seeming need to choreograph the most minute actions, even beyond his death.

On the other hand, I respect that this book reflected his personal story, which was in accordance with his unique personality, his natural bent. He even touched on that a little by acknowledging how an accountant's world view (and a CEO's) complemented or ran counter to the process of living while dying.

Well grounded inspiration.
Eugene O'Kelly and his wife crafted a beautiful and inspirational manual for anyone who cherishes life and the world around them with Chasing Daylight. I found it astounding that a man who accomplished so much in a relatively short life would take his immenent passing with such grace and dignity. Choosing to not dwell onthe unfinished business in his life, but rather celebrate the time he spent with friends and family. I personally was able to take some of Mr. O'Kelly's ideas in his final days and convert them to exercises in my own life. Exercises which have improved my relationships and outlook on the world I live in. Taken not as dying man's memoirs but as an affirmation of his life, this book shines brightly on my shelf.

An incredible, inspiring story about living and appreciating this present moment, a gift we take for granted.A must read for every person before we face our immortality.A lesson about facing death with Grace and dignity, truly a remarkable man.My son worked for Gene and admired him greatly before his diagnosis, now I feel as though I know the beautiful human being he was.I urge you to learn from his journey, he and his story will always be a part of my life.Rhonda Evans

Courageous
In general, the premise of this book is nothing earth shattering.With themes including: end of life, struggle to survive, diagnosis of terminal illness, mortality, and the importance of friendships, family, and faith, several other similarly themed books spring to mind... Man's Search for Meaning (holocaust survivor), The Last Lecture (university professor), Tuesdays With Morrie (old man with ALS), and A Gift of Peace (priest).Finally, I come across Chasing Daylight, which adds a corporate executive's take on the matters of living and dying.

Eugene O'Kelly was certainly a powerful man, given his position at KPMG, but I was beyond impressed with how grounded he was.It is refreshing to see a man in corporate America who (at least appears to be in the book he writes in his last months of life), is so full of faith and humility.Eugene admits his struggles with some of the same things all of us struggle with- the balance between family and work, making time for friends and faith, living in the moment instead of the past or future.

How often do we get caught up in the daily grind?Tell ourselves we'll take better care of our health next year, volunteer more next month, that we'll call a family member tomorrow, or spend time with a child or spouse after we finish... watching the news, reading a book, washing the dishes, finishing a project?We all need to be reminded to cherish our lives, and to not wait for extraordinary days but to seek them out.For a man whose cognition was steadily failing, O'Kelly writes with remarkable clarity.I found the closing chapter by his wife especially precious, with her recollection of the last conversation she had with Eugene.

If I were given three months to live, and each day my sense of sight diminished, clarity of mind fogged, and several hours were occupied while I sat screwed to a table during radiation without the ability to move or even swallow, I don't know that I would take on the task of writing a book.Remarkably, Mr. O'Kelly did.This is an insightful book from a man who may not have had it completely right (who's to say there is a right?), but who shares some pretty good points from his life (and death) experiences. (Anyone looking for other extraordinary reads, I highly recommend checking out any and all of the books I mentioned earlier)

A native of Alameda, California , he batted and threw right-handed. A 26-season major league veteran, Rigney played for the New York Giants from 1946 through 1953. His most productive season came in 1947, when he collected career-highs in home runs (17), RBI (59), runs (84), hits (142), doubles (24) and games played (130). An All-Star in 1948, he was a .259 career hitter with 41 home runs and 212 RBI in 654 games. Following his playing career, Rigney served as the Giants manager from 1956-60, leading the club in its first season after moving from New York to San Francisco in 1958. He then became the expansion Los Angeles Angels ' first manager in 1961, moved with them to Anaheim , and remained until the 1969 season, winning the AL Manager of the Year Award in 1962. With a disappointing 11-28 record and mired in a ten-game losing streak, Rigney was fired by the Angels on May 27, 1969, and succeeded by Lefty Phillips .
