5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest
I'm an old time musician, who is still active in music, and appreciate the American Songbook. Jerome Kern is right up there with Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, Johnny Mercer, etc. as one of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced. This is a collection of his work that I'm most happy to own. ... Read more

Product Description
In what has become the biography of the father of American musical theatre, Gerald Bordman demonstrates a keen understanding and sympathy for Kern the man, as well as Kern the musician.

No "rags-to-riches" folk hero, Jerome Kern grew up on the periphery of the American-Jewish elite, achieved early success, and moved throughout his life among the era's leading personalities and performers. Bordman follows Kern's career from its beginnings on Broadway and London's West End before World War I to his death in 1945. He reveals how Kern's 1914 hit "They Didn't Believe Me" established the pattern for the modern popular ballad; how his famous Princess Theatre shows during World War I helped end the dominance of European musicals on Broadway; and how with Show Boat he initiated the Americanized operetta style that dominated the American stage for decades.Examining the scores for all of Kern's shows and films (including fascinating discussions of such famous songs as "Look for the Silver Lining," "Ol' Man River," and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes"), Bordman demonstrates not only how Kern dramatically changed perceptions of what theatre music should or could be, but also how developments around Kern influenced him and his music. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The whole story
The author is a distinguished historian of American musicals. In this volume we learn not only about Jerome Kern but about the theater and music industry from the early and mid-twentieth century.Bordman has a full command of the primary and secondary sources, and it's doubtful that any other historian will attempt a more exhaustive Kern biogaphy. But there's the fault: the story is overwhelmed by details. It takes a dedicated reader to wade through the barrage of facts about Kern and the theater.I made it, but many others, I'm afraid, won't.The word "definitive," controversial as it is, may surely be used in this case.Bordman is a fine writer as well as researcher, and this helps enormously. ... Product Description

A founding father of the modern American musical, Jerome Kern (1885–1945) was the composer of legions of popular songs, including such standards as “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “Ol’ Man River.” His 1927 Show Boat with Oscar Hammerstein II helped to set a new standard for musical theater.

This book is the first to provide a critical overview of Kern’s musical accomplishments throughout his career. Stephen Banfield ranges from Broadway, to Hollywood, and to London’s West End, drawing on unpublished manuscripts and scores to assess the composer’s extraordinary oeuvre.

Kern’s life, personality, and working methods are given due attention, as is the development of his work from the early musical comedies through the collaborations with Hammerstein and P. G. Wodehouse up to the later film scores. Banfield focuses especially on the musical and lyrical structures of Kern’s compositions, illuminating beloved works and shedding light on compositions often overlooked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable addition to Kern scholarship
"Jerome Kern," Stephen Banfield's contribution to the Yale Broadway Masters series, is a learned, beautifully written work that deserves careful study and will yield enormous pleasure to fans of the Broadway musical. On all levels--as biography, as musical study, and as theatre history--Banfield succeeds brilliantly.

Despite Kern's enduring popularity and his strong influence on such beloved composers as George Gershwin and Richard Rodgers, Banfield reminds readers how little we know today of the Broadway "sound" of Kern's shows because of the absence of cast recordings and the scarcity of published vocal scores. In his examination of Kern's development as a composer, Banfield closely examines three representative Kern stage musicals ("Sitting Pretty," "Show Boat," and "The Cat and the Fiddle"), paying close attention to characters, dialogue, song placement, and performance history, and the results are a revelation. Moreover, unlike many critics of Broadway musicals, Banfield is an extremely sympathetic scholar of song lyrics, and his careful analysis of Kern's collaborations with P. G. Wodehouse, Otto Harbach, Oscar Hammerstein, Johnny Mercer, Yip Harburg, and Ira Gershwin is a welcome and long-overdue addition to Kern studies.

Banfield's enthusiasm for his subject and the clarity of his writing are a joy to encounter. He has thought long and deeply about his subject and brings the kind of zeal that makes the reader want to hear all of Kern's music. There is not a trace of condescension in Banfield's approach, and the reader comes away with heightened respect for "tunesmiths" such as Kern who have yet to be fully understood or appreciated for their huge contribution to American musical culture, both serious and popular. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very good reading
Sometimes, the best way to learn about America, it to read about people that have had a major influence on American culture. Kern is a good example of a composer that produced a unique collection of show tunes that eventually became some of the most loved standards of all time. The interesting facts exposed in this book are: Kern had one of the better literary book collections and also collected coins and eventually silver antiques. The author documents his success in New York, his dominance in musicals, his success in Great Britain, and how he eventually lands in Hollywood where he does a few movie sound tracks and works with movie greats like Fred Astaire, Ginger Rodgers, Bob Hope, and others.

Kern loved Irvin Berlin and had somewhat of a falling with George Gershwin who apparently idolized Jerome Kern early on in his career. Jerome Kern also worked with some of the best lyricists of all time.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Prolific Music Maker.
This book was first printed in Great Britain in 1978; this edition was printed in Hungary. He was one of our best immigrants, among other composers of his time.He worked with Ira Gershwin on "Cover Girl."Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly was in "Long Ago and Far Away."His best-known show was the January, 1946 Showboatat the Ziegfield Theater in New York.In it, Helen Morgan was Julie and sang a mean "Why Was I Born."Alan Jones was terrific as Gaylord singing "Only Make Believe."Paul Robeson was spectacular in this show and appeared in the movie version, singing the symphonic poem "Ole Man River" and "I Still Suits Me," recorded with Druary Lane Orchestra in London, now a collector's item. The movie version had Ava Gardner and Howard Keel.It had a long run at London's Adelphia Theater, and later a revival.

In his heyday, he and wife Eva gave small dinner parties at the Beverly Hills, California, but grew tired of the L.A. life and returned to New York where his blood pressure was too high and he collapsed near his old stomping grounds of New York City and later died on November 11, 1945.He had been a master of turning popular music into an art form.Unlike George Gershwin, he had no ambitions to write a concerto, a symphony, or an opera. He stuck to his venue and became a legend. At a "Vaudeville Cabaret" by a local group, the host JN present an evening of hilarity and music from the '30s.Some of Kern's best known compositions include Till the Clouds Roll By, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes, Look for The Silver Lining, Long Ago and Far Away, All The Things You Are, and had planned to do the score for 'Annie Get Your Gun'.

3-0 out of 5 stars the real story
it is fasinating to lean the true story of his life as oposed to the movie story in till the clouds roll by. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Jerome Kern," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Jerome Kern in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Jerome Kern when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Jerome Kern, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
