Product Description
Blessed with a natural beauty, Scotland-born actress Deborah Kerr (1921-2007) provided the cinema with memorable studies of English gentility. A star in British pictures before she was 21 and a Hollywood fixture from 1946 on, she projected a cool reserve and stoic nobility, often hinting at passion and insecurity beneath the surface. Frequently portraying selfless, sympathetic women, she was brilliant in such roles as Anna Leonowens in The King and I (1956). And in a fascinating departure from her normal range, her portrayal of the sexually frustrated Army wife in From Here to Eternity (1953) resulted in the screen's most famous "clinch"--the beach scene with Burt Lancaster. Though she never won an Academy Award despite six nominations, Deborah Kerr received an honorary Oscar in 1994. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Portrait Rather than a Scandal Seeking Reference Biography
I find the author's biography to be referentially helpful, which is what an honest biography should aim for; the referential, informative narration productively substitutes for the usual scandalous, affair-driven, hyperbolic sell points from which biography authors often construct their narrative-accounts. Instead, the author is respectful of his subject. Rather than seeking to dream up a concocted, fanciful life-narrative based on gossipy accounts, the biography aims effectively to reflect a life while concentrating on its professional achievements. In that sense, the biography captured best Kerr's essence, whose flashiness was reserved for portrayals of characters in front of movie cameras rather than the self-portrayal of a Hollywood star. I think that the biography serves best in that context Kerr's fans and students: it is, as the biography implies, what they love so much about her and what Kerr's colleagues, without fail it seems, learned to appreciate with awe.

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid film career bio
Capua typically writes biographies that place more stress on the film and stage careers of his subjects rather than subjective attacks on his subjects' lifestyles and controversial social interactions. This book on Kerr is no different.I tend to gravitate toward more directly-narrative biographies with this type of focus rather than half-baked or questionable commentaries written for the sake of drama. These are also the type of books common of his publisher. The book also contains several very agreeable photos, typical, too, of Capua's books.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Money!
Hey I want to write a book about Deborah Kerr! So I'll Google for any articles or interviews, watch the Bio Channel, probably read Eric Braun's biography and a few others like, say, Bob Mitchum's, David Niven's and that other English guy Stewart Granger's, for stories about Deborah and call the British Film Institute. Then I'll put all the bits together and write them down in a book. Ok, so there are small inaccuracies, like thinking Guildford is a town in Sussex, or that it's only 20 miles between Surrey and Bristol, or that Deborah was told of her brother's murder which caused her great pain, when this was actually kept from her by her family and I'll write briefly and vaguely about most stuff, including unsubstantiated affairs, use phrases like "hastened to Deborah's side" and I'll hurtle through her illness and death to get to the end as fast as possible because I can't give any actual details of her last years, but it'll be just like reading a magazine so that'll be ok, right? Wrong. Sad to say, this is a lazily researched and badly written, superficial book. I'm pretty sure at least one hackneyed sentence is exactly the same as one in Getting To Know Her, the Bio Channel feature. It's obviously unauthorised, as there is nothing from Deborah's family. A piece of work that just skims the surface of Deborah's life and work, most of which any fan of Deborah's has surely read somewhere else. Those who don't know her probably won't bother to get halfway through. It's a shame when it's been a long wait for a new biography. And the price in the UK is outrageous, for such a slim paperback. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Time for A New Biography
This book was written in 1977, when typically, star biographies were neither particularly honest nor too personal. This is a gushing tribute to DK's supposed unspoilt and unpretentious behaviour and does a good biblographic job of her film career. There is an interesting summary of her early years and the apparently effortless break into stardom, but it doesn't address any personal issues or obstacles. For example she apparently told Noel Coward in 1959 that she was fighting for custody of her children and then there are the rumoured affairs with two co-stars. It would be interesting to hear of her life since 1977, particularly with regard to her battle with Parkinson's Disease. She's still alive, which is certainly worth celebrating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Biography of a wonderful actress
This is a truly fantastic book. I finished it in less than three days, because I just couldn't put it down. It gives you insight into the actress' life, career choices and character, without being too explicit and vulgar. After you read it, you really feel like you KNOW Deborah Kerr... And wishyou had. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Humourous, but not cheesy -- a rare find
Superb. You know those little books you pick up in the doctor's waiting room to pass the time? The ones with one funny witticism one each page, united by a general theme?

This is better. The theme is more directed, yet at the same time the content is less redundant. And they're actually funny, yet at the same time there's a serious side inherent in the topic. Even if you don't know any MKs personally, you'll enjoy this one. A great addition to any personal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wide-ranging, accurate view of the MK (missionary kid) world
The first item:"1.You can't answer the question, "Where are you from?"

Wow!I read that first line, and was captured by this little book.I grew up in Zaire (now Congo, again...) and also spent timein several other countries along the way.My mother is an MK too.Thisbook is 100% right on.I have always felt like a foreigner, no matter if Iwas in boarding school, back at the mission with my folks, or "home onfurlough" to the States.

The book is serious, but also hilariouslyfunny.I have indeed watched nature programs and thought about what thatanimal/insect tasted like, and marveled at the selection of coffees in thegrocery store, laughed at the names of compact cars (because I knew whatthey really meant), spoken at churches even though I am not a pastor, beenexhibited at Sunday School, and my home does look like a museum of Africanart. It took me years to remember not to cross my 7's, and to throw awayempty jars and tins.

If you are an MK, please read this book.It willcomfort you to know that your feelings of alienation and lonliness areshared with thousands of others - you really are not alone. It will alsoremind you of the fun times, whether you were a missionary kid in Africa,Asia, Central, or South America.

If you are trying to get to know an MK(a feat if you can accomplish it, since we don't usually let people tooclose), you should also read this book.It will give you some insight intotheir world, which is so different from the one you grew up in.

5-0 out of 5 stars You know you've read a good book when...
Possibly the greatest set of words to ever be written down in this order. With the exception of the recipe for chocolate chip cookies, but that goes without saying. ... Read more

Product Description
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) is a film by the British film making team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger under the banner of The Archers. It stars Roger Livesey, Deborah Kerr and Anton Walbrook. The title derives from the satirical Colonel Blimp comic strip by David Low but the story itself is original. The film is renowned for its beautiful Technicolor cinematography. The film begins in 1943, the middle of the Second World War. The leader of the defenders in a Home Guard training exercise, Major General Clive Wynne-Candy (Roger Livesey) is "captured" in a Turkish bath by soldiers led by a young lieutenant who has decided to strike preemptively, in contravention of antiquated conventions of war, as he believes this is how the Germans fight. Candy protests in vain that "War starts at midnight!" ... Read more
