Product Description
This penetrating study of the Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami's life and work engages a cross-cultural dialogue between Mehrnaz Saeed-Vafa, an Iranian filmmaker, and Jonathan Rosenbaum, a film critic, both of whom have an intense interest in Kiarostami's work. A pioneer in Iranian cinema and considered one of the most controversial and influential filmmakers alive, Kiarostami has written or directed more than twenty films. He gained notoriety in the West in the 1990s with the breakaway films "Close-Up" and "Through the Olive Trees" and became the first Iranian director to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival for "Taste of Cherry". He is also largely credited for his contributions to the Iranian New Wave. Abbas Kiarostami is the first full-length, English-language study of his work. A unique and resplendent collaboration featuring two distinct but complementing perspectives, the book places Kiarostami and his films in a national context and provides American readers with valuable insights into Iranian culture, Kiarostami's portrayal of women and politics, and his influence on other filmmakers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Decent intro to this Iranian master
This book consists of a 41 page essay by Rosenbaum, a 30 page essay by Saeed-Vafa, a 22 page dialogue between the two authors and ends with 20 pages of various interviews with Kiarostami.Rosenbaum, always a strong proponent of world cinema, gives an good introduction to Iranian cinema in general and also to Kiarostami.Saeed-Vafa writes as a native Iranian and from a feminist perspective. Both essays are interesting and informative.

My major criticism comes in the dialogue between the authors:Rosenbaum uses the conversation to continue a spat he was having with fellow writer Howard Hampton, who thought Rosenbaum liked foreign directors too much and domestic directors too little. While Saeed-Vafa tries to bring the dialogue to more relevant topics, Rosebaum continually brings Hampton back up: "What about Hampton's charge that I..." and later "Maybe Hampton thinks I'm being snobbish..."He just comes off as being petty. The two authors also take shots at well-known movie critic Roger Ebert for not liking Kiarostami.

Overall, this is a good introduction to Kiarostami and I would still recommend it to those interested in him or Iranian cinema in general, but the dialogue section gets a little bogged down with the professional spat between Rosenbaum and Hampton. ... Read more

Product Description

Abbas Kiarostami's films--Close-Up, Life and Nothing More, Through the Olive Trees, Taste of Cherry (winner of the 1997 Palme d'Or at Cannes), and Ten--have taken their place alongside the masterworks of world cinema. Yet Kiarostami, the most influential filmmaker of post-revolutionary Iran, has produced a body of work that is as rooted in contemporary Iran as it is universal in appeal. Respected cinema historian Alberto Elena has used Iranian sources wherever possible and sought to frame Kiarostami's oeuvre within the context of the rich artistic and intellectual Persian tradition that has nourished the director. He examines his blending of fiction and reality, and his recurring themes of death, meaning in life, isolation, solidarity and the lives of women. Kiarostami's career, from his early days as an illustrator and graphic designer to his current master-status, is also explored.

Product Description
This bilingual edition of recent verse by the celebrated Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami (award-winning director of such films as Close-Up and Taste of Cherry) includes English translations of more than two hundred crystalline, haiku-like poems, together with their Persian originals. The translators, noted Persian literature scholars Ahmad Karimi-Hakkak and Michael Beard, contribute an illuminating introduction to Kiarostami's poetic enterprise, examining its relationship to his unique cinematic corpus and to the traditions of classic and contemporary Persian poetry. Of interest to enthusiasts of cinema and literature alike, Walking with the Wind--the second volume in Harvard Film Archive's series "Voices and Visions in Film"--sheds light on a contemporary master who transforms simple fragments of reality into evocative narrative landscapes. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Not haiku ... acute visual perception translated into verse
The translators of this work provide a very astute introduction to the poetry placing it in perspective with regards to Kiarostami's cinematography, the Persian poetic tradition and 20th century innovation.Through this they guide the reader to listen for the space between objects compared, to observe the "grand scheme" implied in the particular, to note how the "obvious" is unobserved and surprising.

An example from the introduction of this last point: "... a sycamore leaf / falls softly / and rests / on its own shadow"

The poems are like haiku in that they are minimalist and nature based. However, the sensibility of the cosmic purpose present in these poems differs from the sensibility of cosmic nowness of the (Zen) haiku tradition.

An example: "... the clock /reads seven minutes to seven" reads in these poems as "seven" intentionally invoking cultural connotations. In haiku, it would more likely read as factual observation ... enlightened observation, perhaps, but observation.

The book is beautifully printed, Persian and English side by side, one poem per page. The poems must be read slowly, allowing the visual image time to form in your mind... but what perfect visual images ... images to savour and explore. My one regret ... I cannot read the Persian in this bilingual edition. ... Read more

Product Description
The Islamic Republic of Iran is at the center of world attention politically, socially, and culturally but it remains largely a cipher to the West. Award-winning photographer Mark Edward Harris has traveled throughout Iran to produce the first contemporary photographic book on a place seldom seen or understood. His images of daily life offer a fascinating look at a society of juxtapositions ancient and modern, commercial and spiritual, serene and intense, political and personal. With chapter introductions and extended captions providing context for the images, Inside Iran is a crucial look at a country whose future is likely to influence our own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL BEAUTIFUL BOOK ..
THIS IS A BEAUTIFUL BOOK, FULL OF INFORMATION AND GREAT PICTURES ..
RECOMMEND IT TO ANYONE INTERESTED IN SEEING MORE OF IRAN ..

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos

This coffee table book meets my standards for the genre: quality and size of photos, sturdy paper, a minimumof text and a balance of people culture and scenery.

I like that it is geographically arranged. It starts with a map showing the country and its many neighbors. There is an introductory paragraph for each area's chapter.

Coffee table books should have big photos (so I think), especially now that we can see small ones on the internet, and this book meets that criteria. There are several double page shots of city and country scapes.

On the negative side, the chapter introductions are on black paper, which pulls down the photo on the opposite page and makes the text, no matter which color is used, hard on the eyes. While I am not a good judge of what the balance of content should be in a book on Iran, two things were missing that I did want to see depicted. One is North Tehran, not only a streetscape, but how the women there dress (presumably more stylishly?) in public. The other, the remembrances for the martyrs of the Iran-Iraq War.I understand there are elaborate memorials and would have liked to see one or two.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eye and Mind Opener
The breadth and scope of text and photos are remarkable. The sights are memorable, the insights unforgetable. ... Read more
