Andrea King got it right.
I have many friends in interfaith families and we have all have kids from elementary school through college. Being in an interfaith family means tackling tough decisions, and I think some people want to "shoot the messenger" in their criticism of this book.If you tell your children you expect them to "decide" on their religion, it is like expecting them to "decide" whether to do their homework or "decide" whether to say please and thank you.

I would never dream of asking my children who they love more -- me or their Dad.I think if you ask them to chose your faith or his faith, that is exactly what you are asking them to do.

I was not raised Jewish but have made it a priority in my life to have Jewish family, and one of my greatest joys is being part of a synagogue community where my family can share the joys and sadness of life and my family is nurtured.This is certainly not the only path, but I don't think it is realistic for a couple to be a part of two different religious communities.After 18 years of parenting I believe that most people who can't decide on one end up with neither.

Thought provoking
Andrea King's book challenges us to consider some thought provoking dialogue and considerations on the always controversial subject of religious upbringing in an interfaith family.

This book portrays how 2 families dealt with the hotly debated topic in 2 different ways and the outcome of those decisions.

As the author raises issues for couples to address, she in no way suggests there is a perfect answer.The book merely gets our minds moving in the direction of communicating with each other our feelings and thoughts with regards to some of the future decisions we might find ourselves facing as a family.

I highly recommend this book for interfaith families as a good start to communicating religious differences and decisions.

Not the best choice...
I purchased this book without reading the reviews and I regret that now! The book essentially tells the story of two interfaith families, and how they coped with the spiritual education of their children. One family opted to raise their children as Jews, the second choose to raise the children as both , which led to little or no religious based education. This was quite disheartening for me, as our plan is to both baptize our children, and have a traditional bris or naming ceremony. I wanted to learn how to teach my kids about God, Jesus, and the bible staying as true as possible to both Catholicism and Judaism . Understanding this is going to be quite a challenge I was putting a lot of hope into this volume. Unfortunately, this book offered no practical solutions, except to favor raising your kids as Jews. At no point did this text offer any solution on what to do if both parents are very strong in their faith and want to pass that on. I am disappointed that a book that asks a simple question never really answers it. At one point in the book, the daughter of the 'both' family indicates she is sorry she isn't anything. She 'resents she was raised without a real religion'. That is so sad, and this book never explains what to do to prevent the result.
Try a different source. This one will only frustrate you.

Superficial overview
This book was okay, though a bit superficial and not as in-depth as I would hope a book on this subject would be. I also didn't like how the two families were composites of many different families whom the author had interviewed, just for the sake of simplicity.

Apparently the truth contained in these pages, regardless of how it wasn't as in-depth as it could've been, offends people in interfaith marriages who want to raise their kids as "both" instead of picking just one religion. The two boys who were being raised Jewish seemed more secure and happy in their religious identity than the three kids who were being raised "both." Those kids felt more conflicted and angry, and confused over which religion they truly were a part of, which they ought to choose, why they weren't doing more in either religion, why they couldn't have just one religion like their cousins did. The oldest, Hannah, felt this especially keenly; she wanted a place to call home, comforting religious rituals that united the family instead of divided them, the type of religion she could turn to when the going got tough, instead of her parents trying to be two religions at once and in the process seriously dumbing down both. I wasn't raised in any religion, though my parents were both Christians, and I felt the same way she did; how come all of the other kids get religious holidays, memories, and coming of age ceremonies?

The librarian on duty when I checked this book out said she was in an interfaith marriage, and that she couldn't wait for me to return it so she could immediately check it out herself. The information in here may be more of a superficial overview than a real in-depth discussion, but it gets the point across well, as evidenced by how strongly some people feel over reading the advice to pick just one religion.

Hurtful if you're Christian
I found this book to be very biased.I am Christian, my husband is Jewish and we are raising our children Jewish.If you are considering converting to the Jewish faith, then you'll find this book supportive and it might work for you.However, don't be misled into thinking it's a book for interfaith families.This book left me hurt, more confused and even a little angry.I do NOT recommend it. ... Important Health News
Andrea King Collier and Willarda V. Edwards, MD have written a book that can benefit every single woman who cares about the men in her life. The book may be entitled The Black Woman's Guide to Black Men's Health, yet, it is "every man's" book and guide.

Chock full of health information, I was interested in learning about my own health as well as my husband's. I found this book to be an ideal source of information.

The beginning chapters cover simple basic facts that can aid in determining what can affect a Black man's health. You can learn how to detect when something is happening to the men in your life and assist in helping before the situation gets out of hand. The authors advise that we as women obtain all information possible in terms of health care. I learned that communication is everything when it comes to finding out exactly how our men feel. Collier and Edwards talk about how to target the right doctor as well as the right insurance coverage.

The later chapters discuss the major issues affecting the health of our men. The authors discuss the effects of cancer, obesity, HIV/AIDS and other major illnesses. Because Type 1 Diabetes is an illness that affects my own family, I was very interested in the information. The authors explain what diabetes is, the system, the types and the treatment.

This is a book that crosses every creed, color and cultural line. But, this book is desperately needed in the Black community because we are so affected by lack of understanding regarding health care issues. These authors have taken a bold and much-needed stand.

Armchair Interviews says: Collier and Edwards have written a guide to help women guide their men to better health and in effect, a longer and more fulfilling life.

Excellent handbook.

A strong two thumbs up
Still with Me is a wonderful read, beautifully written and warmly delivered.It is universal in its message and will touch anyone who has lost a parent. I began reading the book in a restaurant as I dined alone; but became somewhat self-conscious as I cried almost as many times as I laughed, and sometimes that happened on the same page.This book promises to be not only a best seller but would make a splendid movie.

Still With Me
I felt as though I was in the same room with Andrea King Collier listening to her tell this story.It is a true account of the roller coaster of emotions that accompany caring for an ill parent.The book demonstrates the importance of preventative health care and the reasons to advocate for one's own health.It is fortunate that Andrea had the support of her husband, the distraction of two young children, the strength to care for her mother, and a sense of humor to help make it through even the darkest of days.This book is a tribute and an inspiration to all women.

Still With Me - a must read!
I was so moved and so utterly totally shaken by this book that I have been crying though the reading, my nose running and my chest tight. Now I am just raw with my grief. This book isn't so much about Ms Collier's mother as it is about all our mothers.
I am one of those daughter's who has taken on the care of an elderly parent. My mother is still living and I have been her "assisted care" for several years. In the years since my mother suffered a debillitating stroke I have struggled with the varying feelings of helplessness, inadequacy, andger, resentment - all of those and more.
This book is a gift to all of the daughters, all of the caregivers. It gave me permission to cry, to let it all out.
Beyond a clearly superior ability to write - the author posesses an indefinable quality that allows her to dip into universal truths and make them personal and immediate. "Unflinching" as one review characterizes it, does not even come close.

The Ultimate Love Story
"Still With Me" is a story of love, life, illness, loss and healing.It is an emotional journey that made me smile, laugh out loud, talk back to the book, and shed a few tears as I read.
This is a well-rounded look at how an illness affects the entire family, not just those closest to it. The depth of the love between the author and her mother is so clear in this story.The importance of annual exams and taking full advantage of access to medical care could be considered the moral of this story.

As a mother, I pray that my daughter will not have to face this experience; as a daughter, I pray that if I am faced with this, I will handle it with in such a loving and caring manner. This is a "must read" for anyone interested in health issues, dealing with a terminal illness, or just an old-fashioned story of the special bond shared between mothers and daughters.

I look forward to future work by this author as her style of writing allows the reader to visualize the setting and the story will tug at your heart and beg you finish it.This is not "light reading", more a story with a message of love.It was wonderful! ... Read more

From the author: Objective: The purpose of this study was to examine performance effects of alcohol in young adult heavy drinkers (HDs) and light drinkers (LDs). Prior research has shown that HDs have alterations in subjective alcohol response in comparison with LDs, with greater reported stimulant-like effects and reduced sedative-like effects. It is unclear whether these quantitative differences extend to performance and objective effects. Method: Thirty-four subjects participated (20 HDs and 14 LDs) in three early evening individual alcohol challenge sessions. Subjects were examined on eye movement and psychomotor performance tasks before and several times after consuming either 0.8 g/kg or 0.4 g/kg ethanol or placebo beverage. Results: Alcohol produced similar impairment for the groups in psychomotor performance and saccadic velocity measures, with blood alcohol concentration dependent group differences on the smooth pursuit task and a marginally lower threshold for impairment for HDs on the saccadic latency task. Covarying for personality differences (i.e., disinhibition and boredom susceptibility traits) and family history of alcoholism did not significantly alter the findings. Conclusions: Despite prior findings of differential subjective response to alcohol in HDs and LDs, alcohol-induced performance impairment was comparable between the groups. Our findings suggest HDs may be particularly at risk for alcohol-related consequences because their greater sensitivity to positive alcohol effects and/or tolerance to sedative effects may not be accompanied by a lesser degree of alcohol-induced performance impairment. A Delicous First Bite of Round Table Lore
After reading Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon I became interested in learning more about the legends of the Knights of the Round table. Knights whose names I have known from childhood, names that are ingrained into our society and culture. This book gave me a great introduction to all the major players and their most popular tales. It is a beautiful book to look at and easy to enjoy. With just enough information to make a reader comfortable they have been given the whole story, but not so much that it is overwhelming. Once you have read these stories and profiles you will want to know more about these legendary figures. I think that is what makes this book successful, it creates interest in the subject, and leaves the reader to seek out more. Rather than trying to be the be all and end all handbook in Arthurian lore, it is instead the bedside companion easy to reach for and search through. I'm so glad to have this on my shelf, and anyone you feel might like to know more about these legends should have this book. Any student studying literature who is not familiar with Arthur and friends should read this book-- you 'll be surprised how many more references in classics that will suddenly become clear!

One of the Most Elegant Books of Arthurian Lore Available

This book is a wonderful resource for both those who are new to the myths of King Arthur and those who are already students of Arthurian lore.I wish I had known about CHRONICLES OF KING ARTHUR when I was struggling through the original Middle English version of Malory's LE MORTE D'ARTHUR.Andrea Hopkins has a scholar's pedigree but writes without the usual scholarly dryness.Gathered from the definitive medieval sources, she presents a cohesive and easy-to-follow retelling of the basic Arthurian legends.Her prose smoothly incorporates the work of several different authors into the individual tales, and the stories are told in refreshingly simple manner that still exudes a sense of wonder while providing the reader with a clear understanding of the events.

The chronicles themselves are divided into three parts:the birth of King Arthur and his rise to power, the golden age of his reign, and his decline and death.The numerous smaller episodes of Arthur and his knights within the cycle are then further separated into helpfully titled mini-chapters.The text is punctuated with a large number of beautiful illustrations taken from illuminated manuscripts, paintings, and earlier printed books, and the sidebars provide insights into various aspects of the stories as well as relevant historical facts.There is also a short list of the principal characters at the end of the book.The binding is excellent -- sewn rather than glued, which is rare nowadays -- and should hold up well.My only complaint is the lack of an index.An index would have made this book more valuable as a reference source.But it is still highly recommended in spite of this.

An Excellent and Useful Work
This book performs a service, much needed: it gives a coherent account of the "King Arthur" stories. The author goes through the massive relevant literature-romances and poems in middle and early modern English, and in various vintages of several other languages-to arrive at a reasonably balanced narrative that gathers all the main characters and the principal tales associated with them. Now, there are probably thousands of stories that impinge on this early constellation of narratives, and more that arise every year in tribute to the perennial fascination of those bright initial inventions. But it is these core stories that are the important ones, just as are the core stories of the Bible, and some few of the Greek myths, as basic cultural equipment.

This is a pleasant book to read, by a scholar, but not "scholarly". It is a medium-format glossy with many paintings and drawings by pre-Raphaellites like Beardsley and Burne-Jones that enhance the romance and magic that is so much of the appeal of the stories. There are wide margins to hold the occasional explanatory sidebar, as well as boxes convenient to--but out of the way of--the narrative flow, that discuss the bigger topics . Each of the stories is smoothly presented, with a seamless (but indicated) transition from Andrea Hopkin's connecting narratives to passages using the actual words (rendered into modern English) of the principal teller of the tale at hand, be it Chrétien, or Geoffrey, or some anonymous medieval writer. More than one writer may contribute his bit to a particular story, but the connecting material keeps the telling coherent and compact. This technique gives us a bit of a sense of the corporate authorship of these "legends", and some of the flavor of the individual style-especially Mallory's, whose words can be presented to us almost as they were written.

This book does, I think, succeed admirably, but I object to the lack of index. There is a list of the principal characters, and a glossary, but neither of these is cross-referenced by page number to the text. This book is not, strictly speaking, a work of fiction (tradition frowns upon indexing fiction!), though its "facts" happen to be the fictions of other writers. It deserves and requires an index. If it survives to a subsequent edition that repairs this lack, it will deserve a five-star rating.

Andrea Hopkins combines many of the best arthurian romances into this book, a "must" have for those interested in the legends of theround table. Sidebars tell you facts that you probly didnt know, about thedifferent authers, places, and things in the book, if you are a first timeor a veteran reader this is a good choice.

If you get one book about King Arthur, make it this one!
The more one reads about King Arthur, the more one realizes that there isn't just ONE legend of King Arthur, but probably hundreds.Each one has its own plot twists and heroes.Andrea Hopkins book takes the most prevalent texts and weaves them into a single tapestry, rich in detail.When texts are quoted directly, the original is noted in the margin.Sidebars contain complete treatments of subjects such as the Round Table, Sir Lancelot, Excalibur, etc. and how the legend changed from author to author, country to country. Easy to read with gorgeous illustrations, it's a must read for King Arthur fans, whether it's your first Arthur book or you hundredth ... Read more

Well-done for those who like the 1970s cosmic Marvel style
After many stories in which Abnett and Lanning updated the corny 1970s cosmic Marvel characters for a new generation (Nova, Vol. 1: Annihilation - Conquest, Nova Vol. 5: War of Kings, etc.), it's understandable that the pair decided to take a bit of a break and write some corny 1970s cosmic Marvel stories of their own.This volume is not to my general liking, but there should be a lot of nostalgia for readers who like characters with names like Starstalker who impress all of the other characters with their cutting edge nanotechnology, or high-level villains like the Sphinx who have huge plans and lots of Silver Age announcements of their intentions.These stories do have a lot of heart - Nova enlists a wise drill sergeant so his newest team members will be equipped for their jobs, then he strengthens his longtime friendship with Darkhawk, then he has an emotional reunion with a version of Namorita who has been plucked out of the timestream from some point before her tragic death (and the reunion includes the best use of the "Blue blazes!" catchphrase ever).Readers will like this collection if they like old cosmic stories or epic tales with noble heroes fighting obviously nasty baddies.I prefer the cosmic Marvel of the last few years, though, with gritty war drama and political intrigue and complex character motivations, and this volume is a step in a direction where I would prefer that the story not go.A well-executed step for what it is, but a step nonetheless. ... The Nova Corp Enters a "War of Kings"
There is a lot happening in Nova Vol. 5: War of Kings.Richard Rider has been stripped of his Nova powers by a corrupted Worldmind.As a result of the damage done to his body by the Nova Force powers, he seems to be dying.But Quasar is trying to help him hang on long enough to save a very green batch of newly recruited Nova Corp Centurions that are in way over their heads, including his little brother Robbie.

Richard Rider must also deal with the "War of Kings", a deadly battle between the new rulers of the Kree Empire "The Inhumans" and X-Men foe "Vulcan", leader of the Shi'ar Empire.It's a war so deadly and destructive that it just might rip the entire universe apart (literally!) and wipe out the Nova Corp...again!

This was another fun read by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning who have given us some of the most entertaining cosmic adventures in Marvel history such as Annihilation, Annihilation Conquest and Guardians of the Galaxy.Abnett and Lanning have written such a fun and engaging hero in Richard Rider that I no longer wince but actually smile when he exclaims "Blue Blazes!"
There are some exciting and amusing confrontations between Nova and the mega powerful "Strontian" cousin to the Shi'ar "Guardsman", Ego the Living Planet as well as the current "King" of the negative zone...Blastaar.There is some nice interior art by Andrea DeVito and Kevin Sharpe with attractive cover art by Daniel Acuna.

As with the other volumes of Nova, this story is part of a larger event that crosses over into other titles like Guardians of the Galaxy.However, while having the other stories in the War of Kings saga adds to the enjoyment of this volume of Nova, it's not by any means a necessity and is still a very enjoyable read on its own and still easy to follow if you haven't read any of the other War of Kings titles.Nova Vol. 5 collects Nova issues 23-28.I recommend Nova: War of Kings.

Good, but not great, cosmic Marvel stories
This is a good collection of stories, but by Nova standards, it's kind of ordinary.In the last few issues, Worldmind has been recruiting a swarm of new Nova centurions, and this volume is largely concerned with clearing them out.First, there's an intense scene, the part that makes this a War of Kings crossover, in which a number of new heroes learn the limits of their experience, then Abnett and Lanning take a few issues to peacefully pare the cast to a manageable number.There are some nice developments with Quasar (the Wendell Vaughn version), some backstory for a scientist from Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S., and some really well-executed character developments for both Nova and his brother.The success of the volume as a whole depends a great deal on whether or not the reader is interested in Ego, the Living Planet (I am not), but it should satisfy both long-time cosmic Marvel fans and anyone who has been following this most recent Nova series closely.

Another fulfilling chapter
Nova has been the real success story of Marvel's renewed interest in their cosmic characters & this book continues his great roll that he's on.HAMMER, the imminent death of Richard Rider, the insanity of Worldmind, the consequences of rebuilding the Nova Corps and the horrors of war are all dealt with in this book.I can't say an awful lot because it will spoil it for you but I will say that if you are reading the War of Kings collection then I suggest you read that before you read this book because the end of the War of Kings is kinda given away at the end of this book.Overall, Nova is one of the most exciting reads at the moment and this continues this trend. ... The Path to Treasures in Europe
A well thought through and organized title. Definitely helped me in uncovering the treasures of Europe, and led me to places I had never been before, not even in my hometown (in the Netherlands). Also includesexcellent travel tips and suggestions for culture, food, health and aconvenient language guide.

Much better than "Lets Go Europe"
I traveled throughout Europe in the summer of 98, and found that it had much more information on cheap hostels than Lets Go Europe had.It also gives a brief history of the countries and regions.This book is the onlytravel guide you will need to bring when traveling in Western Europe.Theonly thing that it lacks is the Czech Republic.This book will help you totravel and have a good experience throughout your journey... good luck.

incredible and indespensable
I traveled throughout most all of W. Europe with this guidebook and foundit to be truly worth the extra pounds and space in my backpack. It gave themost comprehensive and informative information that I've yet found in aguidebook and helpedenourmously in the smaller towns or lesser knownareas.Though it could use some updating and I look forward to the nextedition,it proved invaluable on my last trip.

Don't leave home without it
I backpacked UK and France in 1996 with it.It's full of information that any backpacker or first time traveller will find invaluable such as itineraries, nuggets of history and accommodation of course.Totally indispensable.

Other than an interesting read on a boring train journey, its sheer volume takes up a chunk of valuable space in the backpack besides adding a few more pounds.Also, if u are only visiting 2 or 3 countries (like I did), consider rebinding it into several lighter and more portable copies.

Thorough and generally accurate.
I just returned from an exciting trip to Western Europe, and fortunately brought this selection along. While other guidebooks I have seen gloss over important details and simply tell what to see, this guide tells how to see and do it. From the moment one steps off the plane, this book acts as a guardian angel. It also endows the traveller a historical perspective that truly allows one to appreciate what one sees.
