Heaven and Earth
The book follows the first twenty years of Hayslip's life, beginning in the Vietnamese village of Ky La.The United States/Vietnam war begins early in her life, and she discovers that her centrally located village is stuck in the middle.By day the villagers are technically controlled by the U.S./Republican force, and threatened to ensure their loyalty, but by night the Viet Cong attacks and claims the village for their own, a process which is reversed the next day.The villagers try to pacify each side, and many are destroyed by both.Hayslip tells her family's story- they alternatively first for and are attacked by the Viet Cong, depending on the changes in the wind.

I liked this book very much.Although I sometimes found it difficult to keep abreast of the movements back and forth in time, it generally fit together fairly well.Hayslip does not blame either side for the war- in fact, she is attempting to make both sides understand one another better- despite the fact that she suffered brutally from both.Instead, she tells her story to share the futility of war to get the average person what they really want in life: family around them, lasting love, watching children grow old- peace.

A True Account of the War,July 1, 2001
I found this book engrossing and hard to put down! It is so beautifully written. Le Ly has a poetic way of expressing her deep feelings and emotions. How a cruel tortureous childhood could have produced a woman with such an overflowing capacity to forgive and inspire others is simply inexplicable! In her small village of Ky La, Le Ly is recruited as a child spy and sabotour for the Viet Cong. Because of this tragic situation, Le Ly had suffered imprisonment, torture, rape, and the death of many cherished family members all before the tender age of 16! This devastating fact of war, became the reality of many young women living in Ky La. Possibly the most astounding fact of all, is Le Ly's undying faith in humanity. Even after all the hurt and anguish the war had caused her, Le Ly freely forgave her persecutors and even appreciates them for "without them i could not have discovered myself or the mission of my life". As well as telling the unforgettable story of her harsh childhood, Le Ly also writes of her reunion with her beloved family.

A book for those who want a true account of the war
As a 14 year old young lady, i found this book remarkably touching. It gave me a truer understanding of what life during the vietnam war was really like. Hayslip shows how forgivness has delivered her from an excruciatingly brutal past! She actually honors and appeciates her persecutors,as well as others whom she came across during her years in vietnam, for they have shaped her road to self-discovery. This rare attitude has inspired her as well as many others, including me. During her stirring testimony, Hayslip becomes a 12 year old recruited spy and saboteur for the Viet Cong. Because of her position, before the age of 16, Hayslip suffers imprisonment, torture, and rape. Her familygradually slips away and, at times, leaves her to fend for herself in the filthy streets of Siagon.Hayslip has poetically recounted her journey to self-discovery and forgivness. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't truely grasp how bad and degrading a war can be for a young woman and to those who have had difficult childhoods. Hayslip illustrates how it is possible to overcome and benefit from past experiences!This is definitly a must-read! ... Read more

You know it's good when . .
You read a book and then more or less forget about it, except that you keep coming back to it in your idle moments.In my case, I had a grad student in my office last week who mentioned that she was going to China to teach English and I found myself telling her, "You HAVE to read this book.It's about an American woman who goes to teach English in China right after the Cultural Revolution and the Chinese woman she meets there, and a love triangle and the baby she tries to adopt . . "and of course I completely blanked out on the name of the book, and spent twenty minutes on the internet typing in "english teacher, cultural revolution, " and so forth until I finally found the book.But it was worth the search.

The author herself is a Chinese actress who immigrated to the US, and her authentic voice rings true throughout the work.In many ways, I think it's the modern-day rendering of that old classic, "The Ugly American,"and that's actually the reason I find myself recommending it to my students.Catherine is so likeable in her earnestness and her sincerity and her completely inability to understand how vast the chasm is between her and the students, including Zebra, whom she tries to teach.For example, when she tells the students that she is divorced and then, in her american way, tries to joke about it, she seems almost completely aware that her students are offering her the sorts of condolences that you might offer when someone dies, because they regard the situation as tragic.Catherine's rock music and her easy sexuality are simply so foreign to her students, as are the types of life choices she makes and provides as examples to them.It was chilling to realize how many times, for example, she put the students in danger with the secret police through the outings and events she planned for them -- and she herself was completely unaware of this.This is the sort of book that should be required reading for students who plan on studying or working abroad.It serves as a great read, a fascinating jumping off point for future discussions and a cautionary tale for those who risk becoming "the ugly American."

Not her best work
Save your time and money for one of her later work...not worth the time to read.

Harsh; yet a good insight to China
The year is 1982, only six years after Mao's death and China is only beginning to open up to the West. The narrator, a woman named Zebra succeeds in describing her very narrow, limited world, a world which holds almost no options of change and no possibilities of getting out, of improving your state. There seems to be comfort nowhere and even Zebra's home closes around her when she needs to give up the room she shares with her brother. The limitations seem to be even on the mind, one's wishes, loves and dreams. A feeling of suffocation pervades and is very clearly transferred to the reader.
Katherine is an American English teacher which symbolizes the entire Western world for her Chinese students. Everything she does, her actions, topics of conversation and the way she looks has the air of another place. Katherine represents a far away desired place which seems beyond reach; yet, she manages to evoke feelings and thoughts which are sometimes hard or forbidden to deal with. For the Western reader the limitations and the Chinese way of thought are not always comprehended - a good example would be Katherine's story about her youth. Her parents, so she tells her students, wanted to move near Lake Michigan. They preferred the suburbs... she loves to breath the air and listen to the waves at night... These words are totally uncomprehended by the Chinese students. They could not understand the meaning of "preferred", "bought a house"... "decided"... We never thought, writes the narrator that we could have an option to choose... that a person can do what he "likes" to do...

This is post revolution China but it seems that one person is meaningless and his future can be determined by some uneducated personality which happens to be in charge of a little "power" and the ability to determine one's fate.

I read this book holding my breath, expecting the tragedy that was sure to come. The book is an easy read but its content is harsh and thought provoking... For me it provoked feeling such as how lucky I am to be living in the Western world. Zebra describes her life and the change her life undergoes after she gets to know Katherine. The American Katherine undergoes a change as well.
All in all the entire book leaves you with a very heavy feeling, but still ahighly recommended read and a good insight into China.

A disappointment after Red Azalea
Red Azalea is one of my favourite novels, and so I read Katherine with great anticipation. I was very disappointed--the story was weak, and the writing not as sharp as what I expected after the freshness of Red Azalea. I think it is common for writers to have difficulty with their "sophomore" book though, especially after such a smashing debut, as Min had with Red Azalea. Happily Becoming Madame Mao was very good, and I am looking forward to reading Wild Ginger.

The Best Fiction I have ever Read (and a story).
Katherine by Anchee Min is a wonderful book. I was browsing through my local library, (where I used to work until not to long ago) and I stumbled upon it. I had read Red Azalea previously and when I saw Katherine (and Becoming Madame Mao) my heart started to race. (I had not come in to looking for other books by Anchee Min.) I also picked up Becoming Madame Mao and on my way out in the new books display guess what I found? Wild Ginger.

God bless Anchee Min. She brings to America what we had long expected, the true horrors of Red China. Her characters evoke their emotions to an amazing extent (I am talking about Jasmine and Lion Head specifically in Katherine). She is truly an excellent writer.

Well, now I have all of the books she has ever written (I own Red Azalea). I can't wait for what she will come up with next.

I find this book inspiring, though tinged with tragedy. Inspiring because it contains some excellent original art and poetry by the very talented Bernhard Pock. Tragic because it was published as a memorial after his early death from AIDS. Pock was the son of Nancy Kwan who contributes a short introduction. The poetry is observational and philosophical. The artwork, ranging from sketches to photographs of Pock's sculptures, reveal an artist of considerable imagination and vision.
Also included are some very eloquent and moving condolence letters sent to Nancy and her partner Norbert Meisel after Bernhard's death.This book and Pock's movie Rebellious stand as his legacy and gift to the world. Well worth checking out. ... Read more

What A Disappointment
A CD that contains fifty poems of my favorite poet read in part by perhaps my favorite actress Meryl Streep-- now that's a CD you can tip your hat to-- well not exactly. If there ever was a poet whose works do not need background music while being read, it has to be those of Miss Dickinson. If we have to have music connected with the poems, we can listen to those poems that Aaron Copland and Ned Rorem set to music. The music on this CD had become pretty much a mild aggravation, a little like getting two radio stations on a car radio late at night, when on poem number 33, "The Lonely House," I recognized Robert Schumann's famous "Traumeri"as the music swelled. There is no excuse for this.

The editors have allowed themselves to name some of the poems included here. Anyone who has ever read Dickinson knows that she never named any of her poems and that they are usually identified by first lines.It also would have been convenient for the listener if the words to the poems had been included with the CD. They are not. Neither are we told which reader is reading what poem. (In addition to Ms. Streep, Glenda Jackson, Stephanie Beacham and Sharon Stone read as well. While I recognize Glenda Jackson's voice and Ms. Streep's sometimes, I do not have the faintest idea what either Sharon Stone or Stephanie Beacham's voices sound like. I would gladly have paid more for a better produced CD.

Even all these shortcomings cannot mar the beauty of these rich and wonderful poems with such lines as "the sordid excellence as paradise" if they could just turn off the music!And many of Miss Dickinson's lesser-known poems are included, along with some of those most often anthologized, including my favorite poem "The Bustle in a House."

Dickinson was before her time
I've never been into poetry before but Ms Dickinson's poems just blow me away.The readers are perfect for the job - they put emotion and energy into the words making the CD a pleasure to listen to.Highly recommended.

Excellent Readings, But NOT the Poems Listed on the CD
These witty, sly, despairing performances breathe new life and new perspectives into the poems and the poet. Unfortunately, the poems listed on the back of the CD are NOT the poems you hear on the CD, which makes it difficult to know which actress is reading and exactly what she is reading. It's also impossible to directly access a poem directly --- everything falls under a 45 minute Track 1. Finally, this is Fifty Poems of Emily Dickinson, Volume 3. What happened to Volumes 1 and 2? I saw them once as cassettes, but never as CDs.

Perfect marriage of medium and message
Joan Allen, of all people, emerges as the stand out in this collection of wonderfully nuanced readings of poet Emily Dickinson's deceptively simple poems on nature and human truths. Just terrific!

The delivery is as smooth as Emily's poems
If you like Emily Dickenson (and I do) you will love this audio cassette. The readers include Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, and other great female talents. They read the poems with style and a subtility that matches the work of the poet. Work of art
The characters seem so real,..you will laugh, def cry , a lot of drama,.. the characters come to life and you will swear it wasnt something you read but stories friends told you,...hard to put the book down and say goodbye to these new found friends,...buy it !

watch the movie--avoid the book
I hate to rain on the parade, but I found the book to be dreadful."Farewell My Concubine" is one of my favorite movies of all time, and I was looking forward to the novel immensely, but it disappointed on virtually every level.The prose reads like the book was meant for students in junior high (though I acknowledge that might be the fault of the translator), and nothing is left to your imagination: just in case you're too thick to pick up on the fact that Dieyi, one of the main characters, is merging with his stage role, the book tells you so explicitly over and over and OVER.It's unsubtle and verges on insulting the reader's intelligence.The novel constantly violates the cardinal "Show, don't tell" rule of good writing.The three main characters, so rich and textured in the film, come out flat and two-dimensional here (Juxian is nothing more than a cipher).After a while, I pretended I was reading about three different characters entirely, just so I didn't have to associate them with the characters I loved in the film.

The movie "Farewell My Concubine" is a feast.Every time I watch it, I see something new in it, something else to admire.I couldn't believe it had emerged from this.Watch the movie, but whatever you do, don't read the novel; you'll be wasting your time.

Left me in tears
This book is not at all what I expected.I thought I would learn a little about Chinese drama and music and instead I was able to experience it for myself.I became Dieyi after the first chapter and felt all the pain that he endured.I was able to understand and connect to why he had never learned to tell the difference from fiction and reality.It is worth reading and now I am looking foward to seeing the movie.

Definitely worth investigating......both novel and movie
It was a really sad story. I feel even more sad after the actor Leslie Cheung(the one who starred Deiyi) commited suicide a couple of days ago. I cried every time I watched the movie. What is really sad about Deiyi is that he could never tell the difference between real life and the life on the stage. So did Leslie Cheung.

A companion to the movie
The book will deepen your understanding of the movie. The movie, brilliant as it is, plays like a "montage of highlights" and cuts out a lot--as films generally have to do--like what the two heros were doing during the eleven years before they perform one last time. It also ends differently.

(By the way, if you're in the US, unless you've seen the DVD, you've only seen part of the film. The US distributor, Miramax, cut around 20 minutes out of the film as it's seen in the rest of the world, making the already fast pace even faster.) ... Read more

Good, but can get boring
This story is a good story. It is not a bad story in any way. Anchee portrays her life during Mao's rule in an interesting light. She has explained it from both a personal and political side.

The story gets boring from time to time, but it is a good book if you have a day or two to kill.

Red Azalea
I just read Pearl of China and really liked the author's style. I bought Empress Orchid and one other of her books(Wild Ginger). This one is just not that interesting. Hopefully the other two will be better.

I felt like I was there
what a great writer. this book brought me into the story. I have learned so much about China. and felt like I was there.

Nice memoir
I read three of Anchee Min's other novels before this - the Empress duology and Becoming Madame Mao. Compared to these, this book is not as good, especially since Min uses a lot of short sentences, so some parts almost feel like 'See Spot Run'. This offers a nice firsthand account of the Cultural Revolution, but does not offer a whole picture - not that Min can be blamed, since she had been confined to Red Fire Farm so much. I do wish she could have provided more detail on her home life - what was it like for her and her family to live in just two rooms after being forced out of their bigger apartment?

I wish that Ms. Min could have focused a little more on her family, childhood, and outside events, because compared to 'Empress Orchid', this book comes out as rather dry and lacking when it comes to description. If you're new to Anchee Min, I recommend that you read Empress Orchid before this book. It's a enjoyable read, but not the best memoir.

Autobiography by the "Anne Frank of China" Reads Like A Horror Novel - Essential Reading, Especially Under Obama
"Red Azalea" is to Maoist China what Anne Frank's "Diary" is to Nazi Germany, what Ayn Rand's "We The Living" and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn's "Ivan Denisovich" and "Gulag Archipelago" are to Soviet Russia.It should be required reading in every High School literature class in the semi-free world, even with its frank eroticism - today's students are already getting stuff far more explicit, and in this case it's there for a valid reason.

The imperative to read this work is especially true given the fact that high-ranking members of the current American(!) Administration, most notably one Anita Dunn, have expressed deep admiration for the collectivist butcher Mao - a dictator who murdered in excess of 30 million people, who engineered precisely the vast, subhuman misery chronicled by Anchee Min in this autobiography.Note too that "Red Azalea" focuses primarily on a period from the mid-1970s to her escape from the P.R.C. roughly a decade later - the events of this horrific story occurred only a very short time ago.

"Red Azalea" is not just a report on the unspeakable evil that is collectivism, it's a meditation on the will to survive, and on the psychological methods by which people under extreme material and spiritual bondage cope with the destruction of freedom and the extermination of hope."Hope" - now there's an ironic word, huh?

I myself had read all of the dry factual data about what Mao and his regime had done - and to a degree are still doing - to the people of China, but aside from the outsider's peek beneath the veneer of collectivist China afforded by Mark Salzman in his excellent book and film "Iron and Silk," I was fully unprepared for the stark, riveting story of day-to-day life - if you want to call it "life" - that Anchee Min relates in this book.The first fifty pages read like a horror novel - but this is an *autobiography* of a woman born in 1957, and of events she survived, from childhood right up to the 1980s.

Min's prose is bleak and unadorned with literary flourishes - and is all the more moving, even poetic, for that carbide-steel starkness.In a 2008 interview Min said she started Red Azalea as a practical exercise in learning English, and that querying people on elevators on grammatical corrections was her primary means of editing her work. The result, amazingly, is a book that reads more like a novel than an autobiography, to the point that I found myself repeatedly stunned by the self-reminder:"This - is - REAL."When you finish the last page of "Red Azalea," you will find yourself breathing a silent, horrified "Thank You" to the people who forged America's Declaration of Independence and Constitution, to America's first Founder, Aristotle, and to the people who today are struggling to defend those Founding principles from America's own unspeakably-corrupt collectivists.

In exactly the same way that American collectivist "intellectuals" denied the facts chronicled by Rand and by Solzhenitsyn about Russia - and who continue to evade those truths even in the face of the mountain of data released in the wake of the Soviet collapse - so American collectivist "intellectuals" stand up and, with utter ethical agnosticism, profess open *admiration* for Mao (not to mention the dictators Chavez, Castro, Ahmadinejad and the like.) Monsters like Anita Dunn - and politicians who place such monsters in official positions within government - are only able to live their hypocritical lives and to avoid the public ridicule and ostracism that justice would demand, by the fact that We The People rarely find enough information about horrors visited upon people halfway around the world - by the very same totalitarian dictators America's collectivists continue to worship. As in the case of the Soviet empire, we can be assured that the Dunn/Obama types will continue their corrupt flight from facts and ethics long after the Maoist regime has faded, China has embarked on the road to becoming a nation of ethics and liberty, and the old regime's human rights crimes have been fully exposed. Ms. Min deserves the highest gratitude and admiration for having first survived, then having related this harrowing life story to the eyes of the world.The rest of us should consider it essential reading.

Run, don't walk, to checkout for this book.Get extras and give them to family and friends - this story deserves to be heard as widely as possible.I would say it's a ready-made movie script, but Hollywood's "writers" and producers are orders of magnitude more corrupt and evil than even our collectivist politicians.So...just get the book. ...
