5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Book on Playing Golf
This is a good book for women who consider to take up playing golf. Cheryl Ladd is not only a good actress, she also can write very well. I enjoyed reading her book.

5-0 out of 5 stars funny and insightful, nice tips
This is probably the book i've read the fastest in my entire life.I felt it was a different approach to writing about the game.It was refreshing.Through Cheryl Ladd's anecdotes and experiences over 20 years of golfing one does get acquainted with the game, major tournaments, major players and so on.I was sort of expecting a little "Lady Golf Manual", but this was so much better and fun to read. Oh... and the Token Chick side tips...a great touch!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for beginning women's golfer!
This book was not only entertaining, but very informative! Very enjoyable and lots of tips.

1-0 out of 5 stars Token book by a Token Chick
I tried not to put this book down and just give it up-it was a true test of wills!Cheryl Ladd may have accomplished her goals as a golfer but the book is nothing but fluff as big as Farrah Fawcetts' hair in the '70's.A real disappointment in a book that I thought would be more provacative, at least have a few good golf tips!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad for a girl!
I played golf years ago, and gave it up because I'm a tomboy--and got tired of hitting from the girls tees, scavenging for clubs in the "women's" corner of the huge golf store, and the fact I would never hit as far as my husband.Recently a GIRLFRIEND convinced me to take it up again.I scoffed at this book, when I saw it--but my husband mentioned it, after seeing her play in a golf tournament on TV.And you what?!I laughed out loud. She made me realize golf for women is different.Chauvinists still exist in the modern world, we can't hit as far (get over it), and golf with your husband can be enjoyable.I'm not sure the golf instruction was enough, or needed--but I'm going to try the stronger grip she suggests.I'm sure she paid the big bucks for some good instructors--so I'll try it. ... Read more

Excerpt: Gary Owens (born May 10, 1936) is an American disc jockey and voice actor. His polished baritone speaking voice generally offers deadpan recitations of total nonsense, which he frequently demonstrated as the announcer on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Owens is equally proficient in straight or silly assignments and is frequently heard in television, radio, and commercials. He's best known as the voice of Space Ghost on Space Ghost. He also was himself on Space Ghost Coast to Coast in 1998. Owens was born Gary Altman in Mitchell, South Dakota, the son of Venetta (née Clark), an educator and county auditor, and Bernard Joseph Altman, a county treasurer and sheriff. Jack Haley and Gary Owens, 1979.Owens was a journeyman DJ/announcer throughout the midwest and southern U.S. in the late 1950s, finally ending up at radio station KEWB, Oakland, California in 1959. Owens moved to KEWB's sister station KFWB in Los Angeles in 1961. From there, he joined the staff of KMPC in 1962 , (replacing previous host Johnny Grant), where he remained for the next two decades working the 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. shift, Monday through Friday. A gifted punster, Owens became known for his surrealistic humor. Among his trademarks were daily appearances by The Story Lady (played by Joan Gerber), the Rumor of the Day, myriad varieties of "The Nurney Song", and the introduction of the nonsense word "insegrevious", which was briefly included in the Funk and Wagnalls Dictionary. His regular on-air radio terms included "krenellemuffin", as in ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=605506 ... Read more

Excerpt: John King Fairbank (24 May 1907 - 14 September 1991) (Traditional Chinese: ; Simplified Chinese: ; pinyin: Fèi Zhèngqng), was a prominent American academic and historian of China. Fairbank was born in Huron, South Dakota on 24 May 1907. He was educated at Sioux Falls High School, Phillips Exeter Academy, the University of WisconsinMadison, Harvard College, and Oxford University (Balliol). In 1929, when he graduated from Harvard summa cum laude, he went to Oxford as a Rhodes scholar in order to study British imperial history. At Oxford, Fairbank learned that the Qing imperial archives were being opened, and he decided to go to Beijing to do research for his doctoral degree in 1932. In Beijing, he studied at Tsinghua University under the direction of the prominent Chinese historian Tsiang Tingfu. Wilma Cannon came to China to marry Fairbank and began a career of her own in Chinese art history. In 1936, Oxford awarded him a D.Phil. for his thesis on the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs. He returned to Harvard in 1936 to take up a position teaching Chinese history, the first full time specialist on that subject. He and Edwin O. Reischauer worked out a year long introductory survey which covered China and Japan, and later Korea and Southeast Asia. The course was known as "Rice Paddies," and became the basis for the influential texts, East Asia: The Great Tradition (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1960) and East Asia: The Modern Transformation (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1965). Following the outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941, Fairbank was enlisted to work for the US government, which in...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=1474234 ... Read more

Product Description
Emily Dickinson was born into a prominent New England family. Sociable as a child, she grew increasingly withdrawn, and in later years became known as a recluse. Only seven of her poems were published during her lifetime. After Emily's death in 1886, her sister discovered the bulk of her poems and began publishing them, thus establishing Emily Dickinson as one of the greatest poets of the English language.Amazon.com Review
At the age of 23, Emily Dickinson receded from the socialwhirl of her prominent family into semiseclusion. For the remaining 23years of her life she was happiest when alone and writing. As sherequested in "The Prayer," "Great Spirit, give to me a heaven not solarge as yours, but large enough for me." Read by a group of verytalented celebrity women such as Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, and AlfreWoodard, these pieces lean toward the somber side of Dickinson's work(which, as her fans know, is very somber indeed). Poems include"Shipwreck," "Will There Really Be a Morning?" and "To Know Just HowHe Suffered." (Running time: 45 minutes, 1 cassette)--C.B. Delaney ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars What A Disappointment
A CD that contains fifty poems of my favorite poet read in part by perhaps my favorite actress Meryl Streep-- now that's a CD you can tip your hat to-- well not exactly. If there ever was a poet whose works do not need background music while being read, it has to be those of Miss Dickinson. If we have to have music connected with the poems, we can listen to those poems that Aaron Copland and Ned Rorem set to music. The music on this CD had become pretty much a mild aggravation, a little like getting two radio stations on a car radio late at night, when on poem number 33, "The Lonely House," I recognized Robert Schumann's famous "Traumeri"as the music swelled. There is no excuse for this.

The editors have allowed themselves to name some of the poems included here. Anyone who has ever read Dickinson knows that she never named any of her poems and that they are usually identified by first lines. It also would have been convenient for the listener if the words to the poems had been included with the CD. They are not. Neither are we told which reader is reading what poem. (In addition to Ms. Streep, Glenda Jackson, Stephanie Beacham and Sharon Stone read as well. While I recognize Glenda Jackson's voice and Ms. Streep's sometimes, I do not have the faintest idea what either Sharon Stone or Stephanie Beacham's voices sound like. I would gladly have paid more for a better produced CD.

Even all these shortcomings cannot mar the beauty of these rich and wonderful poems with such lines as "the sordid excellence as paradise" if they could just turn off the music! And many of Miss Dickinson's lesser-known poems are included, along with some of those most often anthologized, including my favorite poem "The Bustle in a House."

4-0 out of 5 stars Dickinson was before her time
I've never been into poetry before but Ms Dickinson's poems just blow me away. The readers are perfect for the job - they put emotion and energy into the words making the CD a pleasure to listen to.Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Readings, But NOT the Poems Listed on the CD
These witty, sly, despairing performances breathe new life and new perspectives into the poems and the poet. Unfortunately, the poems listed on the back of the CD are NOT the poems you hear on the CD, which makes it difficult to know which actress is reading and exactly what she is reading. It's also impossible to directly access a poem directly --- everything falls under a 45 minute Track 1. Finally, this is Fifty Poems of Emily Dickinson, Volume 3. What happened to Volumes 1 and 2? I saw them once as cassettes, but never as CDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect marriage of medium and message
Joan Allen, of all people, emerges as the stand out in this collection of wonderfully nuanced readings of poet Emily Dickinson's deceptively simple poems on nature and human truths. Just terrific!

5-0 out of 5 stars The delivery is as smooth as Emily's poems
If you like Emily Dickenson (and I do) you will love this audio cassette. The readers include Meryl Streep, Sharon Stone, and other great female talents. They read the poems with style and a subtility that matches the work of the poet. After hearing the presentations, I came away feeling that the poems were studied by the readers and for the most part understood and delivered accordingly. Thumbs up! ... Read more
