Lancaster to the Fore!
Jon Lake continues his history of the Avro Lancaster at war in this 2002 Osprey 'Combat Aircraft' volume, #35 in the series. LANCASTER SQUADRONS 1944-45 chronicles the rise of the Lanc to prominence as Bomber Command's main bomber, the Lancaster being turned into a devastating weapon of war thanks to improved tactics and technology. Yet, though German targets were sometimes devastated, the Lanc and Bomber Command in general ended the war with a mixed record of victories and defeats as revealed in Lake's comprehensive book.

The last two years saw Bomber Command raids improve in their effectiveness thanks to the creation of Pathfinder units, better radar, better target marking, etc. Yet, many raids, went amiss, doing little damage while suffering crippling losses such as the disastrous March 1944 Nuremberg raid and the ineffective "Battle of Berlin" campaign of late 1943/early 1944. Harris' mistaken and unyielding belief that Area Bombing attacks would win the war cost 10,000 British airmen in the 11 months following D-Day alone. Many would say unnecessarily lost.

Lake's book does a fair job of covering the Lanc's last two years in action but has the same problem as LANCASTER SQUADRONS 1942-43: trying to cram too much into 80-odd pages. Then too, in this second volume, Lake spends some ink repeatedly discussing the Area Bombing doctrine, taking space away from the "Lanc ops" theme. Several times he runs long, dull summaries on targets hit during such-and-such a month. And, as with the first volume, Lake includes very few first-person reminiscences, again resulting in a dry read.

Heavy metal fans will loves the dozens of photographs contained in the book. Likewise, Chris Davey's color profiles are a definite plus, being wonderfully done.

In all, LANCASTER SQUADRONS 1944-45 is a fairly good operational summary of the Lancaster's late war record but suffers from trying to stuff a size-20 body into a size-15 flying suit and, likewise, leaves out most of the human element which would have given more life to the Lancaster story.

The Avro Lancaster Goes to War!
Entering service in December 1941, the Avro Lancaster became the backbone of the RAF's Bomber Command. Yet the bomber's first two years of service were very much a period of trial-and-error as the aircraft assumed the lion's share of ops even as new weapons and tactics were tested and developed. Jon Lake covers Lanc ops during 1942 and 1943 in this 2002 Osprey 'Combat Aircraft' volume, #31 in the series.

Bomber Command's record of achievement was dismal in the early war years, most of its night raids failing to damage the German war effort in any way, shape or form. While the snake-bit Stirling was operational and the more potent Halifax was coming on line, the Lancaster would be Harris' weapon of choice. Initial ops were marked by mis-uses of the Lanc as in the disastrous April 1942 Augsburg mission, strikes against French coastal communities and work with the Capital Ship Bomb. The Lanc however soon showed its war-winning potential in the hands of 44, 97, 61, 207 and other squadrons. The development of the Pathfinder Force and new tactics helped ensure the Lanc would be Bomber Command's most effective tool.

Lake does a workmanlike job of summarizing early Lanc ops. Yet, in trying to cram two years worth of combat into 73 pages, his narrative is sometimes a long recital of missions flown with no details. Likewise, he relied on some 40-odd books in his research, generally foregoing first-person reminiscences, which add spice to a history. For those reasons, the text is rather dry. The book features dozens of photographs, some previously seen. Chris Davey's profiles though are marvelous, depicting 30 Lancs in all their painted glory.

So, if you're a Bomber Command, Lanc or just a generalist 'heavy metal' buff, you'll want to check out this Osprey title. Recommended. ... Read more

Interesting and Informative!
The cover story is about the LDS polygamists living in the Colorado City, AZ. and Hildale, UT. area just north of the western end of the Grand Canyon. About 6,000 live in the area. Joseph Jessop is the group's leader, and as 5 wives, 46 children, and 239 grandchildren. Merril Jessop was one of Joseph's sons, and married Carolyn Blackmore of the same sect in an arranged marriage. He was 32 years her senior, and though he did allow her to attend college, directed that she study elementary education rather than Carolyn's choice of pre-med. Months after the marriage, the sect leader gave Merril two more wives. After eight children with Merril, Carolyn left with her children and became the first member to leave and be granted custody of her children. She wrote a book, 'Escape,' chronicling her experiences. Merril is under indictment for marrying Warren Jeffs to an underage girl.

Elaborate funerals are the rule in the community - even when a child dies one can expect 3-4,000 attendees from several states. Children are raised in an environment of cooperation and freedom from television, junk food, and social pressures. The community, however, is quite computer literate; most have cell-phones, use laser surgery to avoid glasses, and prefer late-model SUVs. Theoretically it would be easy for any woman who wanted to leave to do so - there are no armed guards, and they drive. 'Escape,' however, tells readers that it is not so easy - most lack support systems or skills to do well on the outside, and have been taught to fear the outside as well.

Most residents avoid contact with strangers. Church members own a number of local businesses - hotels, tool-and-die makers, and have built a four-bedroom home in a day. Virtually all the children are home-schooled; the multiple wives work out a division of labor (eg. sewing, cooking, teaching) among them to mitigate conflict.

Women's primary role is to bear as many children as possible; doctors say that inbreeding has created problems within the community. In 1890, faced with the threat of federal seizure of church property, the LDS expelled the polygamists, and this group has been raided by authorities in 1933, 1944, and 1953. The group's greatest legal vulnerability has been for performing underage marriages - a practice they now claim has been stopped. Many of the group's young boys leave or are forced out, supposedly for being a disruptive influence.
