Product Description
The theological impact of accepting the absolute authority of biblical scripture is enormous—especially for women who attend and serve churches. But until now, few books have been willing to address this issue head on.

Sarah Lancaster looks at the way women in the church have dealt with the question of scriptural authority and how they can address it in the future. Some women, she says, accept the authority of the Bible without question and stay in church without change of attitude or action. Others deny that the Bible has any authority, completely leaving Christianity in the belief that the Bible and Christian tradition are irredeemably patriarchal. Still others recognize that while scripture is largely patriarchal, it is authoritative for their life of faith.

The Bible possesses a narrative coherence, its story resonating in our own lives. For women, the Bible can continue to "ring true" to their experience, letting them acknowledge scripture's authority in spite of its problems. The Bible is not about patriarchy; it is about how God is present to us and interacts with us in order to bring us to fullness of life.

Lancaster says that women can criticize those things in scripture that help maintain a patriarchal world without invalidating scripture's authority. Scripture, she argues, informs, forms, and transforms. With its combination of narrative and feminist theology, Women and the Authority of Scripture brings a powerful new perspective to the doctrine of biblical authority in the contemporary world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A nuanced exploration of scripture's authority as relational
Today when the authority of scriptures across religions is being touted as the reason why a people must go to war, Lancaster's book could hardly be more timely.Although she writes specifically to engage some feminists' tendency to locate authority in the subject, her work has much broader application. After grappling with the concept of revelation, she launches into an extensive analysis of authority based on the work of philosopher Richard T DeGeorge.A feminist herself, Lancaster, sensitively navigates the twin shoals of absolutism and relativism and anchors the reader in a compelling appreciation of scripture's unique authority.A must read by anyone who sees this issue as central to what is going on in today's world. ... Product Description
Do we act, live and breathe our faith? What do United Methodists believe? Do people notice a difference in the way United Methodists practice faith in the Church and world? A Year with John Wesley and Our Methodist Values is an engaging and provocative study of the practices of discipleship that are of ""the Methodist way."" Brief scholarly reflections on Wesleyan themes are followed by short essays making recurring Wesley tenets timely and relevant to today's world. Covering an aspect of distinctly Wesleyan theology a month, the collection of essays contained in this book provide an in-depth yet easily approachable 12-month survey of the Methodist tradition for clergy and laity alike. ""A Year with John Wesley reveals and makes plain the essence of John Wesley's life and witness,"" writes one reviewer. ""A Methodist way of living becomes accessible through these great themes expressed in contemporary language and situations. Those who read and reflect upon these pages will gain understanding of United Methodist theology, polity and practice, but even more significantly, they will learn what it means to walk with Christ in our contemporary world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Loved It
I was lucky enough to do an interview with Sarah Eden back in February, and I was finally able to get my hands on a copy of Courting Miss Lancaster when I was home in Utah last week. I curled up today and thoroughly enjoyed entering the wonderful Regency world Eden created. This was my first Eden book, and it made me want to read ALL her other books even more so. I loved the characters Athena and Harry, they were so cute with each other and as the story went on I just liked them more and more. I loved the supporting characters as well; the formidable Adam and loving sister Persephone. The plot was a lot of fun, especially the crazy guys Harry was introducing to Athena. It definitely was one of the best regency's I've read. I loved Eden's take on marriage, which can sometimes be painting in a negative light in Regency novels, but Eden brings an honesty and love that was endearing and true. I would definitely recommend this to everyone, especially those who love romance, regency and humor.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but not like the movie
The book was very good, but not like the movie version.I think I liked the book version better, but guess Hollywood had a better idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Redemption of Sarah Cain
Beverly Lewis has an amazing gift writing about the Amish. The Redemption of Sarah Cain was wonderful and I will read it again. The descriptions made you feel like you were watching real life events. I would have liked for Sarah to have stayed with the children in their home when she married Bryan. Miriam just didn't seem like the appropriate person for the children. I realize it was probably best for them to stay with an Amish person. Loved the book.I always enjoy her books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This book was pretty good but definitely not one of her best.I did enjoy reading it but it did take me a while to get into. While at first Sarah was extremely unlikable the reason behind it all made sense and reading the transformation was wonderful. The ending was predictable but a good one.

4-0 out of 5 stars MISTY EYES
you know when i read any of beverly lewis'amish books i cry with great compassion, envy and love for all the characters. i can't stop reading these fantastic love stories.i only wish it were me in the stories.my horse ferrier is amish and i share much of what i read with him and he does verify what really happens in the amish world. i have the best of both worlds, my amish ferrier and beverly lewis.
thank you so much for these stories.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book and movie of this Beverly Lewis title are both excellent.
When Sarah's sister dies she leaves her Old Order Amish children to Sarah who is a big city reporter/writer. Talk about culture shock.

The children are so precious and you cry a lot with them. They have a very hard time adjusting to city life and so want to go home.

Sarah learns a lot about love and herself. I will not spoil the book/movie for you. Also the movie soundtrack is also excellent and great music to fall asleep by.

Highly recommend all three items. The movie and soundtrack are called the Saving of Sarah Cain.

Highly recommend this read. ... Read more
