Is anybody in there?
Okay, I want to know what happened? Did Hugh Laurie's brain go on vacation 2/3rds of the way through the book? When I sat down to read The Gun Seller I thought that it was fun, witty, and exciting. The sarcasm was fun for a while, but then it got irksome. It was a bit showy and over the top. Every paragraph and almost every sentence was hosed down with mockery. Then, about 2/3rds of the way through the sarcasm just stopped. There must have been a serious kink in his ridicule hose. Uh, where did Hugh go? It ended with all seriousness and down to business with a few chuckles here and there. Overall the book was an okay read, the story line was good, but I felt like he rushed the ending or overdid the beginning. I can't decide which.

I like it
I waited for almost a month for this book because I live abroad. I haven't finished it yet, but I like what I have read of it. I recommended it to anyone who likes books full of humor.

LOVE THIS BOOK!!
This is one of the best books I've ever read!!!The quick wit of Hugh Laurie is just amazing.It has everything.I would describe the main character as a really sharp-witted, more interesting and likeable James Bond!Because of it I'm ordering books that Hugh Laurie co-wrote.

What a surprise. Dr. House can write!
Dr House is a fantastic writer. He's dry, witty and very thoughtful and timely as well. It has a great plot, very well thought out. I found it very difficult to put down.

Would easily make a great screenplay. I can't wait for his next book.

almost everything you wanted to know about House, seasons 1-3
okay, this is a good book for the scope it takes on...an analysis of the first three seasons of everybody's favorite medical misanthrope, Dr. Gregory House and his supporting cast of characters (including his ubiquitious cane)....considering the show just finished season six.

however, if you're not really familiar with the show, which i assume is who this book is aimed at, this book can be confusing at times.

British Quirkiness
There is something about the way the British write and the subjects on which they write that I really enjoy. Who else could entertain you with a story about Protugese irregular verbs? What a fun adventure. If you like British humor and an off-beat tale, you will love this book. Hugh Laurie reads the book especially well, a most important consideration when listening to a book.

The Garments Of Identity Interpreted By Hugh Laurie
This, the third installment in the Professor Dr. Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld series, is witty and sly like the predecessors, but I found it to be slightly weaker than the first two. The first volume "Portuguese Irregular Verbs" is my clear favorite, and is one of the best things written in the last ten years; likewise "The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs" never fails to entertain (I still laugh when I think about von Igelfeld practicing veterinary medicine without a license.) In the earlier books, von Igelfeld had more numerous (but briefer) adventures that allowed for a quick pacing; here the plotlines begin to drag a bit. Don't misunderstand me, I loved "At the Villa of Reduced Circumstances," I just liked the other two storylines more. Since this book makes reference to events and characters in the first two volumes, I do recommend reading (or listening to) them in order, though it isn't strictly mandatory.

This time, von Igelfeld absorbs himself in a faculty political intrigue (which is sly, yet at times candidly accurate in its absurdity) as he takes a visiting professorship at Cambridge. Not only does he get totally immersed in academic political struggles, he has major issues with English toilets. (These two parallels surely can't be coincidental.) In the end his dealings with the politics of Cambridge and English bathroom design leave a clear opinion of Germanic superiority in von Igelfeld's mind.

Soon after the return from Cambridge, von Igelfeld is invited to become a Distinguished Corresponding Fellow at the Colombian Academy of Letters. This eventually leads to political intrigue at a different level when von Igelfeld is held captive at the Villa of Reduced Circumstances and encounters a strange group of rebels and government loyalists. It all concludes with von Igelfeld becoming the President (yes, of the country, not the Academy) and thus a target for violent overthrow. His ability to extract himself gracefully from that situation is dealt with in a most ingenious and amusing manner.

This is another great volume by Alexander McCall Smith, and I recommend it everyone with a dry sense of humor and an inclination to mock the excesses of academia. I have read the book and listened to this reading by Hugh Laurie, and they provide different but complimentary experiences. Laurie is an excellent choice to read this book as he excels at accents and linguistic nuances. The four CD's are divided into numerous short tracks pausing at logical points in the plot, making it very user friendly for people listening in short sessions. I love to read, and I recommend reading the original highly, but also love this audiobook adaptation, which is perfect for those on the go.

a great listen to for long trips
I must admit I've become addicted to Mr. Mc Call Smith. All the books in this series are fabulous- this is book three- please read them in order- you need to get to know the characters and all their "issues" ...and of course having Hugh Laurie read to you on a long boring road trip......what more could one ask for?? ... Getting to know House
I am a big fan of the House MD TV show, and was very thrilled to see this book had been published. It is full of interviews with the stars and creators of the show, plus a few pictures. I've really enjoyed reading it. I do wish there were more photos, though. And an episode guide would have been nice, too. But its still a good book for all House fans!

If you love the TV show House, Read this book!
This book is a great way to find out more about the characters and actors on House.It gives a great deal of insight into what it takes to put a one hour drama on the air. The attention to minor details that might not even be on the show is amazing.

The forward is hilariously wirtten by Hugh Laurie. He is also interviewed numerous times about his character and about the show itself.

It seems to me that Ian Jackman had direct access to the cast and crew.

I find the book very well written.

I'm a big Laurie fan and there's not much out there on him so it was refreshing to see a comprehensive story on his life finally published. This was well researched and I learned quite a bit about Hugh.Very entertaining and easy read.Two thumbs up from me.

An utter waste of woodpulp
WARNING:This review only applies if you are already a Hugh Laurie fan.If you know next to nothing about the man, you might find it an interesting read.

The above sentence says it all.I bought this book looking for information that I couldn't find at IMDb, or in reading reviews of his work and the odd interview that he's managed to give over the years.It actually has LESS information than you can find at IMDb ... and seems to have been written by someone whose only contact with Hugh is READING those reviews and interviews he's given over the years.

I was looking for information about his early life, but by page 17 we're already at Eton and we get to Cambridge on page 21.I was looking for information about Hugh'sfamily, but the author covers his marriage in two paragraphs, mentions his oldest son twice and the other two children only in passing.His brother is mentioned once and his two sisters not at all - not even their names!

I know Hugh isn't one to talk a lot about his family, but it's plain from even a cursory reading that the author of this book didn't personally interview anyone, much less anyone who actually KNOWS the man.

Save your money and buy Hugh's movies.At least those will make you laugh. ... Read more

another awesome brit
read everything you can get your hands on, he is hard to find in the states too. his writing is witty and deep at the same time. brilliant.

Battle of the sexes?
This is a really good book. IMHO really good authors aren't only funny or only serious, but both because that's how real life is. Both Sam and Lucy are, in a way, caricatures - Lucy the former career girl panicked about her waning fertility, Sam the bewildered male who can't see what all the fuss is about - but they seem real and endearing through the "diary" format of the narrative.

Without giving away any real spoilers, I'll say that I love the character development in this book - how Sam comes to share Lucy's desire to have a child, how both characters come to be more sympathetic to each other through the process, and of course the ending that illustrates that real love and forgiveness are possible.

But good heavens, I really hope that if I ever want to have kids I'll prove fertile - this book really shows you all the hoops that reproductive technologies make couples jump through!

First half good, second half BAD.
I agree with the other posters who thought this book was hilarious--up to a point. Where it all went south for me was when the husband started acting like a total jerk by writing a screenplay about their experiences, selling it, and starting filming on the project. I won't spoil the rest, but by the end I was so disgusted with the husband, the wife, and their situation, that I wanted my money back. I'm so glad I bought this used instead of new.

Also, maybe this shows the male point of view on infertility well, but not the female one. There's so little detail on what the woman actually goes through in a trying to conceive cycle--it's laughable.

If you get it, enjoy the beginning, and don't feel bad about skimming the second half. The shift in tone and characterization is jarring; too bad the author spoiled such a good beginning.

A much needed sense of humour for all infertile couples !
Being infertile can be hell ! However, a sense of humour can help you cope better, and this book provides that. Even more importantly, it will help you communicate better with your spouse, because you'll be able to understand each other's perspective much better !

HYSTEROSALPINGOGRAMS AND ALL THAT
Ben Elton's style has been got under a bit of control since the heady early days of Stark. He still takes the occasional potshot at incidental targets, but he no longer fires a scattergun in every direction as he did then. As often, he picks a topic that might seem to call for the utmost delicacy and tact and treats it with the utmost frankness and even ribaldry. The topic in question is human infertility, although there is a very entertainingly-handled sub-plot of life within the BBC in addition. His style of comedy has always been to highlight the grotesque side of things, and so it remains here. This doesn't show any lack of human sympathy on his part - indeed very much the reverse I should say - but he is not for the shy or the oversensitive much less for the solemn or the pompous.

The processes of human sexuality verge on the absurd at the best of times whatever else can be said about them. When we factor in the exceptional manoeuvres increasingly demanded by a desperate mid-30's childless wife from her less committed husband, culminating in the lurid rituals of IVF, I think it's fair to say that it takes a certain type of writer to deal with such a theme successfully. Ben Elton handles it brilliantly. We are not spared the most graphic or intimate physical and anatomical details, but the comic style Elton adopts really masks a true delicacy of perception. Indeed I'm inclined to say that nobody with less of a sense of humour than the two protagonists show in this book would have been able to see the whole gruesome process through. The humour is very English humour, and I think I know what it's modelled on to a great extent. During the years of the Thatcher Terror, there used to be a hilarious column in the magazine Private Eye purporting to consist of letters from her husband to a friend named Bill. These were written in a very public-school idiom, probably derived basically from P G Wodehouse but influenced by minor literature such as the Molesworth books, familiar also from Oxford common-rooms and similar places of association, and updated more recently into the dialogue of the chattering classes in Islington and similar parts of London, the form in which we find it here. This idiom can take the heaviness out of the most serious situations without trivialising them, and whether or not I'm right about its precise origin in this book that is the way its author tries to use it, and tries very successfully in my own opinion.

The author never speaks to us directly throughout the whole book, using instead the device of diaries written by the husband and wife, much as is done in Julian Barnes's Talking it Over. The device works very well here. Ben Elton is an observer and critic with a particularly acute eye for human behaviour and attitudes, and it helps if he steps back a little from the narrative for that very reason. The incidents in the story are often Rabelaisian and hilarious, but the dilemmas and worse that the characters face are touched in with no little sympathy as well as perceptiveness. The style of writing has even gained a little (dare I say this?) refinement, to its and our general benefit I'd say. The ending is genuinely touching, so on balance 5 stars. ... Read more

Sadly short
I love the book "Three Men in a Boat", and I love Hugh Laurie's comic timing, so I expected this audiobook to be a riot. When I listened to it I found it amusing, but I was still disappointed. The book is chock-full of hilarious anecdotes and digressions, and almost all of them have been removed from this version. They have left almost nothing but the actual story itself, which unfortunately consists in great part of the narrator saying, "And then we passed Iffley, which is a pretty little town... And Streatley was next..." It didn't even contain Harris's account of his battle with the swans! Hugh Laurie was hilarious, as you would expect from the man who played Wooster to perfection, but the abridgment left much to be desired. I recommend reading the full book instead.

Dry British humour - to be enjoyed with a cup of tea
I am not fond of audiobooks but this one is a gem. Imagine Mr. Wooster (as in Wooster&Jeeves) reminiscing of a trip with his pals sans Jeeves to get them out of trouble. I am looking forward to Mr. Laurie narrating the Journal of a Pilgrimage (by JK Jerome).

Interesting listen
I picked this solely because of my love of Hugh Laurie, and he is indeed entertaining to listen to.

Though this doesn't indicate length except saying "abridged," it is indeed not very long - just two discs - and I think I'd have liked even more (I think it ran a bit over 2 hours at most?).

However, as it is, it's pleasant to listen to and amusing at times, but one should appreciate the dry sense of humor Laurie and Brits tend to have: only the British can spend 20 minutes to describe a packing scene and make one laugh. : )

Perfect Format
I haven't heard the audio book but did read the book and the entire time I was reading it I was thinking how much better it would be to hear it. It would need some abridgement and a good reader so I'm pleased to see that it's been done and I will accept the evaluation of the previous reviewer. I rate the book three stars so I give it an extra star for the audio format.

Charming story and excellent listen
I'm an Anglophile, so I was excited to find a very British book being read by my favorite British actor, Hugh Laurie. The text is wonderful, with humor in abundance and lovely descriptions of the England they travel through. The times are represented well, and the language is a delight.

As read by Hugh Laurie, the characters are brought to life in a rich experience. I forget I'm in traffic, and not sculling down the Thames. I definitely recommend this for anyone wanting a relaxing, humorous taste of Merry Old. ... Read more

Fantastic First of Series
Funny, funny funny. von Igelfeld has to be a top 5 of favorite fictional characters. His circle of friends (frenemies?) are a delightful crew. Subtle dry humor at its best. The mishaps and missteps of the professor are priceless. Igelfeld is a delightful not-quite everyman, a snob, self-important and unaware of his glaring oddness. A lonely sort who lives in his head. Best of all, his nemesis is unaware that he is such. Igelfeld holds grudges, judges everyone (most as inferior to him of course) and as a result of his odd POV and pride he finds himself in delightfully hilarious and humiliating circumstances. Fantastic!

Featherlight and Ticklish
A very silly, light, and quick read. Smith's formula of giving people ridiculous names relating to their heritage and then putting them in conflict leads to a quality time out, particularly for those who have made much dealing with academia.

Portuguese Irregular Verbs
I found this to be a fun little book - not too deep or complex, just a series of light, humorous anecdotes. I wouldn't call it a "not to miss" book, but it was entertaining. Especially fun for me, since I was a student of languages, especially German, years ago.A perfect read for an airplane ride.

Laugh-out-loud funny
Rarely do books make me laugh out loud but these satiric tales of a German philologist and his misadventures had me rolling on the floor. The fact that I'm an academic trained as a philologist certainly adds to my pleasure, and clearly AMS knows the academic world well enough to create a hilarious sendup of the egotism and bombast stomping through the hallowed halls.

I must admit that almost equally funny are the people who gave these books bad ratings and called Dr. Smith bad names because they thought these were actual grammar guides! ROFLMAO!!!!

Properly Irregular Readers
It takes a fair degree of projection to imagine the types depicted in this book, (unless you happen to be a denizen of one of these abstruse little worlds) but trust that McCall Smith is able to portray the reality and simultaneously satirize it.

Not everyone's cup of tea, but a good choice for the sorts who chuckle over Wodehouse and find deep vindication in 'Eats Shoots and Leaves.'

This is abridged!
I was very annoyed to discover that this audiobook is an abridged version of the book.Many of the most delightful parts--the train ride with the smelly cheeses, Uncle Podger hanging a picture, Harris singing comic songs--have been removed in order to give the audiobook a more stream-lined feel.I don't mind that Jerome K. Jerome's ponderous philosophical interludes have been trimmed, but I would have liked to have known that I wasn't getting the whole book when I bought this CD!

For those of you who only know Hugh Laurie as Greg House M.D. - you're in for a surprise.You'd never guess that gravely voiced doctor could be the same posh Brit you'll hear on this recording.

His first-person narration of JKJ's Three Men in a Boat is without doubt one of the funniest things I've ever heard!The book itself is hysterical, but when Hugh Laurie gets his teeth into it, it transcends!His reading of this is my favorite audio book of all time.I keep it in my car and listen to it whenever I feel stressed or need a pick-me-up - or just want to laugh.I practically have the thing memorized, but it never gets old or boring.

When he starts talking about Montmorency (fox terriers are born with four times the original sin of other dogs!), I can't help but laugh out loud.

Buy this CD - it's charming, witty, sweet, surprising informative (JKJ meant for it to be a travel guide when he started) and Hugh Laurie turns it into a rare gem!
