Product Description
An epic love story and adventure set against the harsh, beautiful background of Antarctica. Alice is a scientist: she relies on method, precision, proof. But when her relationship with Oxford artist Peter Brown collapses spectacularly, she is forced to evaluate her own life for the first time. In her thirties, childless, tied to Oxford by her work, it is time to break away. Alice's mother, Margaret Mather, is famous as an adventuring anthropologist, one of the first women in Antarctica many years before. Alice accepts an invitation to go in Margaret's place to the southernmost point of the earth, and stay there for months, away from the world that has let her down. Little does she expect the strangeness of a place coloured blue and white, lit by an unearthly permanent sunlight. And nothing has prepared her for the close confines of a small base shared with eight men and one other woman. A base where tensions run high, where the hostile environment traps them, and where the distance means no-one has a past. Where she feels such a strong attraction to a man with danger in his face that she cannot speak to him. And where she discovers something else that will change her life forever! if she survives. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars saved by Antarctica
The storyline is predictable and far-fetched, and has a film script feel to it, but it is just about worthwhile reading for the wonderfully written descriptions of Antarctica which really seem to capture the essence and wild spirit of the place.

5-0 out of 5 stars great new find
This is a great book with a sympathetic and intelligent main character. Though the first chapter didn't really fit with the rest of the book, in my opinion, the rest of the book flowed really smoothly and had page after page of absolutely beautiful imagery. While this is the first book I've read by this author, it certainly won't be the last. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book...
I am 24 now, but I read this book when I was 10.I absolutely loved it!I also got a chance to meet Jacqueline Wilson and she is wonderful! She read an excerpt from her book "Cliff hanger".That is what made me want to buy the book.It has a lot of situations that many young girls and boys have gone through, including myself. The book shows a girl that becomes a heroine however, there is one small detail that impresses me more.It shows a girl trying to make the most of what her family has at the moment. It certainly opened up my eyes and appreciate what I had.I wouldn't recommend it for anyone younger than 10 because of certain situations they may not understand at that age.Great read! Highly recommend for ages 10 and up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not uplifting...
I am really curious about the 5 star reviews that this book has received...maybe because I was reading it to my 7 year old - but it talks about being homeless, about parents separating, about having to move into a B&B instead of having a home...I just didn't want to put those negative images out there.(Maybe I am a fuddy duddy and just didn't know it!)

Maybe this is just for a different age group - but I didn't get this book at all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Elsa ~ The mane-haired heroine!
Elsa is a frizzy lion-haired 10 year old who is NOT keen on staying at the rotting, peeling "Royal Hotel" or, as some of the letters have fallen off, Elsa would say "Oyal Htl" but there she has ALOT of adventures! She meets a group of vandalisms and eventually becomes great friends with them, along with Naomi, the girl who loves to read in the loos! She saves the hotel from burning to cinders with her loud voice and eventually moves to a 5-star hotel, where she has the time of her life! Have fun with Elsa in the 100% recommended, highly entertaining, incredibly amusing, and sidecrackingly hilarious "Bed and Breakfast Star"

A++

5-0 out of 5 stars A fabulous read
I read this book at age 9 and couldn't put it down. This book is perfect for girls ages 7-10 who still have yet to master the art of reading. The story is about a girl who's parents are separated and she moves around veryoften. She is so witty and good- natured that she finds an adventure inevery move she makes. The illistrations are simple and yet unique and Iwould recommend this book to any girl, around the age of 7-10.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of The bed and breakfast star
I read this book when I was younger, and I absolutley loved it. I'm 15 now, and I still have to say this is probably the best book I have ever read. I love all the titles by Jaqueline Wilson, but this one is myfavourite. Probably because this story covers all emotion. It is at timessad, but others very funny. The main character is great, and JaquelineWilson captures the emotion perfectly. You can see the character clearly inyour head. If this is an adult reading this review, considering buying itfor a child, do! This is an excellent book, and even if your child does notlike reading they will find it very hard to put this book down! ... Read more

Product Description
Ten-year-old Mandy must endure torment from three nasty bullies in school, but she finds solace in a new friendship with an older girl.Amazon.com Review
Mandy White hates looking 8 years old when she's really 10. She's tired of her babyish blond braids, her bunny sweaters, and her fussy older mother who won't let her cut her hair or buy cool clothes. But most of all, Mandy's had it with being her same old boring self. "I just wanted to stop being me. I wanted to grow up a whole new person, not Mandy White." To make matters worse, Mandy is constantly reminded of her shortcomings by beautiful, raven-haired Kim, the school bully. "Girls like Kim never wear glasses or braces.... They never have a silly haircut. They never wear stupid baby clothes.... You can't tease girls like Kim. There's nothing to tease her about." Then Mandy meets Tanya, the wild foster kid from next door. Tanya is 14, dyes her hair bright orange, wears "great clacky high heels" with every outfit, and fears nothing. With Tanya at her side, Mandy feels like she could face an army of Kims. But will Mandy ever learn how to get in touch with her own inner "bad girl" so she can face down Kim once and for all?

British author Jacqueline Wilson has perfectly captured the voice and musings of a 10-year-old in transition. Her discussion of issues like bullying and foster care is leavened with humor and sensitivity, without seeming condescending or message-laden. Mandy White joins the ranks of Amber Brown and Anastasia Krupnik as a realistic and honest heroine for girls in their "tween" years. (Ages 9 to 12) --Jennifer Hubert ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable book but with some confronting themes
I recommend that parents read this with their kids (esp younger readers, eg, my daughter is 8yo but loves Jacqueline Wilson books) rather than leaving them to read on their own.It contains a few confronting issues, eg, references to a parent's suicide and drug abuse, that may need a little explaining.Otherwise, i think it is a really valuable book - not only enjoyable for kids but brings up some really pertinent issues for young people, eg, bullying and friendship, the importance of not judging people, dealing with 'uncool' parents etc etc. There are a lot of kids like Tanya and Mandy out there and books like this are helpful in giving a better sense of the complexity of their situations. I also liked the way Mandy's mother was portrayed, ie, her character displayed a level of complexity not normally found in books for this age group.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is great!
This is a moving, angry, and sometimes funny tale from Jacqueline Wilson.
The book's about a ten-year old girl called Mandy White who certainly doesn't look 10. She doesn't really like herself and gets bullied at school by mean, bossy Kim and her nasty gang.
One day Kim's behaviour really gets out of control, and Mandy gets knocked down by a bus.
While recovering from the accident, Mandy meets a girl called Tanya who's really cool and dresses like she's 16, not 14, and wears her hair in this ultra-cool style. She immediately befriends Mandy and Mandy's life gets much, much better, even though Kim and her gang of girls still torment her. It doesn't matter that Tanya's not from a very good background and Mandy gets treated like a baby.
Read the book to find out more.

5-0 out of 5 stars 1 of my favorite books!!!!!!!!
My favorite part was the drawings!I also thought how the chapters were actually named after Mandy's felt pens was cool.I was on the edge of my seat when Tanya shoplifted.I INSIST YOU READ THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Girls....a total winner!
A book about Mandy White, a 10 year old girl that looks like she's 8. She meets Tanya across the street. Tanya has horrible roots but that doesn't effect the girls' friendship. Mandy becomes alarmed when her and Tanya go shopping and Tanya shoplifts. Once Tanya gets caught they try to run away. Tanya and Mandy get caught while Tanya is trying to catch Mandy. Tanya tells the police that Mandy is innocent so they let Mandy go. Tanya ends up going to Juvenile Hall.
This is my all-time favorite book, EVERYONE SHOULD READ IT!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It was good
i liked it. At so e times i wanted to cry. It was something i did not want to think about. It was also funny. My favorite character was Oliver. he was cool and smart. It was kinda scary. I mean no wants to have to go in to care. Well some people might because they lead a bad life. It was easy to read. Hope you like it. I love Jacqueline Wilson!

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't Put the Book Down!
The story is captivating. I couldn't put the book down. Fortunately it is a small book, which didn't take long to finish. I love the story; it made me cry a couple times. A good read for both children and adults.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I think that Illustrated Mum is a really good book, but I think that it can be a little intense, so I don't recommend for readers younger than 10, unless you read with a parent. It was very realistic and I really cared about the characters, especially the main character--Dolphin.It is the kind of book that you wan to read over and over, and you most definitely want her life to get better.Jacqueline Wilson is a really great author.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mom/teacher enjoyed this one a lot!
This book was sad, interesting and emotional without being depressing. Issues handled sensitively. Easy to feel empathy for the characters. I'd recommend this for grades 5 and up. Some senstitive subject matter like mental illness and foster care.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book, No Matter What Your Age.
I have not picked up and read a juvenile fiction book in a long time, but this one piqued my interest when I looked through the audio books at our library.I'm very glad I did! This is one of the best juvenile fiction books I have ever read, and I used to read tons of them as a young girl.

Dolphin and Star have a very flambouyant mother named Marigold who is a manic depressive/alcoholic, dies her hair bright red, and sports tons of tattoos; she's man crazy and dresses too young for her age. While Star, who is 13 is sick and tired of not having a normal mother, 11 year-old Dolphin adores her regardless of the torment she endures in school, and the fact that Marigold often leaves the girls unattended to fend for themselves, scaring Dolphin silly a lot of the time. Then one night Marigold brings home Star's father from a concert, and the girl willingly moves in with him, leaving poor Dolphin to deal incapably with her mother's craziness. This is a very good, realistic portrait of what an awful lot of children probably go through, and Dolphin tells the entire story. She is a sweet, smart, funny, and lovable character who truly loves Marigold though she can't always understand her mother's wild behavior, but she is also the one who inevitably must resolve to get Marigold help as her condition worsens.

I am related to someone very much like Marigold, so I could relate to Dolphin's story telling as I watched my relation's daughter go through similar experiences.Actress Josie Lawrence is an amazingly versatile talent who does lots of great voices, and her performance is so intimate, it never seems like she's reading from Wilson's book.A great story anyone remotely connected with a situation like this can relate to, and maybe you even know a few people who possess these very realistic traits.A superiorly well-done job, I would recommend this book to anybody and everybody. ...
