Product Description
David and Jacob live in the same little, ordinary town, but it's almost as if they're from different worlds. David is so poor he can barely feed his family. Jacob is so consumed with staying rich he thinks about nothing but money. But the two men have one thing in common: they both believe that miracles are big, magical things that can only happen somewhere else, to someone else.

But when Jacob wakes up from a nap in synagogue one day, sure that God has demanded twelve loaves of bread from him, all this changes in amazing ways you'd never expect.

A delightful, timeless legend based on Jewish tradition, In God's Hands tells of the ordinary miracles that occur when we really, truly open our eyes to the world around us.

Endorsed by Protestant, Catholic, and Jewish Religious Leaders ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Contemporary parable
In God's Hands is a fable about how God meets the needs of people in unexpected ways. The story is based in a Temple, which connects families who have very different socio-economic status in the community.A man prays for help feeding his family, and God answers the prayers through another man who has plenty to share.Neither man comes into contact with the other until the Rabbi catches on to what is happening and introduces the two men to each other.A great story for children of all ages!

Product Description

From the vantage point of the United States or Western Europe, the 1970s was a time of troubles: economic "stagflation," political scandal, and global turmoil. Yet from an international perspective it was a seminal decade, one that brought the reintegration of the world after the great divisions of the mid-twentieth century. It was the 1970s that introduced the world to the phenomenon of "globalization," as networks of interdependence bound peoples and societies in new and original ways.

The 1970s saw the breakdown of the postwar economic order and the advent of floating currencies and free capital movements. Non-state actors rose to prominence while the authority of the superpowers diminished. Transnational issues such as environmental protection, population control, and human rights attracted unprecedented attention. The decade transformed international politics, ending the era of bipolarity and launching two great revolutions that would have repercussions in the twenty-first century: the Iranian theocratic revolution and the Chinese market revolution.

The Shock of the Global examines the large-scale structural upheaval of the 1970s by transcending the standard frameworks of national borders and superpower relations. It reveals for the first time an international system in the throes of enduring transformations.

5-0 out of 5 stars They Don't Make Decades Like This Anymore
The 70s. An era sandwiched between the chaotic hedonism of the 60s and the finanical hedonism of the 80s. A 10 year span that began with the Kent State police-state murders and had the BeeGees, Watergate, Pol Pot, Ayatollah Khomeini, Obi Wan Kenobi and Jonestown sprinkled in before the drama-filled year of 1979 ( year, in fact, that merits its own book.) This collection of essays has, like all such books, some good and some not so hot entries. I generally found the economic ones a snoozefest (though the revelation that securitized mortgages started in 1970 was interesting) but the best ones concerned global politics, interdependence and security issues. The eradication of smallpox, a triumph of both medicine and Cold war superpower cooperation, is heralded as an example of the harmonization of human interest, though the author notes this was an under-the-radar low budget program that no one bothered to politicize. Sexual, feminist and decolonization liberation movements are discussed as being the natural successors of the 1960s cultural revolutions, and even rock music's groupie followings are discussed in this context. Overall, for any contemporary history buff,a must read. You may not agree with all of the essayists (the obvious apologist for Kissinger ignored so many of his evil legacies I almost thought he was referring to some alternate universe bizarro Kissinger), but hey, that's what historians are for, controversies, thought provocation and debate. ... Product Description
Bakhtin and Lawrence share remarkable affinities. Bakhtinian dialogism is effectively a philosophy of potentiality, and Lawrence, or at least the Lawrence who authored 'Women in Love', may well be its High Priest. Both thinkers address questions of unity, newness, and the creative process. In this study they enter into complementary, genuinely Bakhinian dialogue, one in which 'The word in language is half someone else's' (DiN 293). One surprising result of this comparative examination is that some prevalent, deeply damaging biases about the nature of Lawrence's achievements are undermined: Is Lawrence a misogynist, or is he essentially, as he seems evidently to fear in 'Women in Love' and rather consistently elsewhere, an over-compensating momma's boy? Chapters 1-2 use Bakhtinian theory as a means of testing pertinent criticism of Lawrence, and provide a detailed conceptual basis for the readings of his fiction that follow. Is "Women in Love" a Bakhtinian 'open totality'? How is dialogic openness (as opposed to modernist indeterminacy) a 'form-shaping ideology' of comic interrogation? 'Is Women in Love' not only open-ended and unresolved, but also about its open-endedness or unfinalizability? In methods and meanings, in forming depths and explicit surfaces, this study explores the sum and substance of the novel's dialogicality, and finds that the shape of its dialogic openness is interrogative. Indeed, in Chapters 3-4 characters are identified (and scrutinized) by the questions they ask. Four principal characters ask these self-shaping questions: 'How much do you love me?' asks Gudrun of Gerald, whose 'What do women want, at the bottom?' like Ursula's 'Do you really love me?' and, have surprisingly revelatory depths. Birkin's ludicrously encompassing and apocalyptic 'Is our day of creative life finished?' not only expresses a fundamental authorial narrative intention, it simultaneously and self-correctively mocks itself for so doing, and does so in ways that may well suggest intuitive insights into the nature of Bakhtinian carnival laughter. In large measure, 'character' in the Bakhtinian framework appropriated by this study is essentially a question personified, one that is made to walk and talk, so to speak, within the intersecting chronotopes or 'time-space' zones of the novel. Such ambulatory interrogations then either connect or fail to do so with other characters-as-questions in 'living conversation'. 'Women in Love' achieves a polyphonic or dialogic openness, one that Lawrence in his later fictions cannot always sustain. Subsequent to it, univocal, simplifying organizations in his work supervene, in ways that the last chapter explores. In his later fictions, dialogic process collapses into a stenographic report upon completed dialogue, over which the travel writer, the poet or the messianic martyr preside. There are, nevertheless, even in his later works, happy exceptions to this diminution of dialogic vitality. Lawrence's consummate, dialogic openness of thought and expression can be discerned in the ambivalent laughter of The Captain's Doll, of St. Mawr, and of 'The Man Who Loved Islands'. In these retrospective variations on earlier themes, laughing openness of vision takes new, 'unfinalizable' or 'open' shapes. ... Read more

Excerpt: John Prentiss "Print" Matthews (August 27, 1840-November 6, 1883) was a Reconstruction era social reformer and African American rights advocate in Copiah County, Mississippi who was murdered in the act of voting after defying the local white supremacists order to not vote. Born near Hazlehurst, Mississippi to wealthy slave owning parents he became a Union supporter during the Civil War. After Democrats took over the area in 1875 Matthews was influential in organizing the Independent Party in Copiah County, consisting of black and white farmers. The Democrats began night riding to threaten African Americans ordering them to not vote for the Independent Party in the upcoming 1883 elections. The white Democratic leaders of Hazlehunt delivered a written ultimatum to Matthews ordering him not to vote. When he persisted, the precinct captain, a white farmer named Erastus B. "Ras" Wheeler, reached inside a wooden box for a double barreled shotgun and killed Matthews. Wheeler was brought to trial in May 1884 before a specifically chosen all-white jury who quickly returned a verdict of not guilty, much to the pleasure and expectation of the judge and the community. Knowing full well the guilt of Wheeler the jury posted a statement noting that if an "error" occurred it was "one of the head, and not of the heart." J.T. Dameron, a merchant, testified that he saw Ras Wheeler in a street car in Jackson on the 13th or 14th of February. Wheeler was talking in a low tone. He said; "Yes, old Hoar is coming down here on an investigation committee. If I get a crack at him I will kill him, too. I killed Print Matthews, or rather it was the Democratic ...http://booksllc.net/?id=17144579 ... Read more

The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars.
The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mystery Continues
Everyone intrigued by the tale of Lawrence of Arabia as told in David Lean's epic film, will want to get a grip on this disturbing end to the story. T.E. Lawrence may have been the most successful and famous real-life spy who ever lived. He could have been Prime Minister or Parlimentarian as was his less celebrated contemporary, Winston Churchill. Why did he instead enlist as a lowly private in several military regiments under assumed names, avoiding his fame? These are some of the questions Matthew Eden explores in this fascinating and well-researched novelization. It does not speculate endlessly, as many recent Lawrence books do, on the soldier's possible sexual preferences. But speculates plausibly on the possible uses others might have had for Lawrence, on Lawrence's own political interests, and the reasons why certain parties in 1935 might have wanted Lawrence dead. Best are the sequences of Lawrence and his beloved Brough Superior motorbike. Here are some of the best motorcycle riding descriptions I've ever read. I found it a very provocative book which inspired me to read further. ... Read more

Product Description
The 2004 reelection of President George W. Bush came as a shock to many politically liberal American citizens and intellectuals who opposed his first administration and its controversial policies and politics. Aimed at this “amBushed” political constituency, AmBushed, a special issue of SAQ, dares to ask how Bush’s reelection took so many by surprise and—through an analysis of the Bush administration and how it garners political strength and executes its policies—examines the way in which the political Left may regain its footing. The diverse perspectives—from respected intellectuals and scholars from the United States and abroad—reflect a range of opinions within democracy and intend to stimulate a constructive debate, fostering the development of new strategies to strengthen and improve the political agenda and efficacy of the Left.

One essay argues that the Left has ceded its political vision—forgoing active political organization in favor of simply voicing political criticism of the president—allowing its activist sensibilities and abilities to atrophy. Others explore the Bush administration, its masterful machtpolitik (power politics), its strategic feminization of its opposition, its aggressive expansion of executive-branch powers, and its flirtation with what some have labeled American fascism or totalitarianism; still others reflect on how the Left has insulated itself from both reality and politics. A contributor from South Africa draws parallels between apartheid proponents and their tactics and President Bush. Others analyze “Bush II” as the leader of the Christian Right, as a skillful exploiter and manipulator of the mainstream media, as the chief spokesman for “evangelical capitalism,” and as the world’s most powerful lobbyist for corporate interests.
