Product Description
An uproarious and lacerating meditation on life--and death--by a celebrated new voice on the comedy scene. Leary employs his ferocious wit and sharp intellect to confront society and its ills and forces us to face the issues we are all most afraid of. "Absolutely brilliant . . . the real cutting edge of American comedy."--The Boston Globe.Amazon.com Review
Leary manages to be harsh and hilarious about foibles andsituations, stupidity and hypocrisy. No Cure for Cancer is the writtenversion of a series of monologues he wrote while in the UnitedKingdom. Perhaps the most memorable aspects of the book are thespeculation about a story drawn from a supermarket checkout newspaperabout a man who lost his penis in an industrial accident;Leary's childhood experience of being shot in the head by his brotherwith an arrow; and his rants about drugs, the psychoses of New York, and the kind of childhood no one would willingly claim is normal forAmerica, but probably (and frighteningly) is! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars great seller
i would definately buy from this seller again.Book in good condition as described.

5-0 out of 5 stars loved it
I purchased Denis Leary's "No Cure for Cancer" as a gift for my son and couldn't resist reading a little before wrapping...it is just hysterical! He is witty, sarcastic, and spot on with his humor. If you like Denis Leary, you will love this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Anybody got some apirin? I think I've got a cold."
Sardonic. That word came to mind when I arrived at this page and simultaneously thought of Denis Leary. You knew he was sardonic though, already, didn't you? Then he's probably much less of an actor, considering his persona on film/stage and off leaves no room for wonderment. But he is consistent.
No Cure for Cancer is an extended rant, travelling through the general touchstones of Drugs, Drink, More Drugs, Smoke, Meat, War, Life and Death. Throw in a hefty dose of 1st generation Irishness, some common sense, and a fashionably regretfull 1970's existence and you've got a good read. In particular, the Introduction and the passage about his father stand out. Entertaining, occasionally laugh-out-loud inducing, and consistent with his character in film and on his TV shows.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dennis Leary strikes another blow ...
Thank you Dennis for giving all those hope who are a little light on the talent side, but who own a leather jacket, let their hair down in their face and a possess a disproportionate affinity for their own jokes. They CAN make it in the biz. A 21st-century Paul Lynde, Dennis knows how to go for the jugular and doesn't take any prisoners. Don't let appearances fool you, he's tough -- even though he has arms like Lindsay Lohan. And for those of you who are always comparing his face to Keith Richards, I call sour grapes! I didn't laugh at this book, but I don't think that was the intention.

5-0 out of 5 stars Denis Leary - No Cure for Cancer
Excellent - easy read; short, light and hilarious.

Leary recalls his days of drug use, whilst also taking a swipe at all the do-gooders and whingers in society.

Product Description
The New York Times bestseller

One of America's most original and biting comic satirists, Denis Leary takes on all the poseurs, politicians, and pop culture icons who have sucked in public for far too long. Sparing no one, Leary zeroes in on the ridiculous wherever he finds it-his Irish Catholic upbringing, the folly of celebrity, the pressures of family life, and the great hypocrisy of politics-with the same bright, savage, and profane insight he brought to his critically acclaimed one-man shows No Cure for CancerLock 'n Load.

Proudly Irish-American, defiantly working class, with a reserve of compassion for the underdog and the overlooked, Leary delivers blistering diatribes that are both penetrating social commentary with no holds barred and laugh-out-loud funny. As always, Leary's impassioned comic perspective in Why We Suck is right on target.

4-0 out of 5 stars Denis Leary: Why We Suck
Well, I was sure if I was going to like this or not.Sometimes Denis Leary can be funny on stage but lets keep in mind he steals all his material from other comedians, especially Bill Hicks, who was a comedy god.And you can tell he does in this book as well.He mentions the illegal immigrants joke where he says if we want to build a wall who do you think is gonna build it.This joke has been stolen by so many people so oh well.He also goes on a tangent about him being a doctor which kind of surprised me.He says we need to actually buy his book and he shows his certification that hes a doctor, which i think is dumb.I also think some of the stories hes talking about in his book he has exaggerated or just plain made up.

But all that aside, i like how blunt he is in this book...this book is not for sensitive people.Im a woman and i got a little offended when he said that women cant be race car drivers. He says our dna isnt made for it.Well dr i disagree i would love to be a race car driver or anything crazy like that but maybe thats because im a lesbian i guess im wired differently lol.He bashes religion, fat people, children especially, i feel sorry for his kids. But everything he says everyone has thought at one point or another.Hes also a pretty good storyteller actually, when hes talking about the bully that used to harrass him and his friends and him having to fight him...that would make a good childrens book i think lol.I read this book and although i got offended about the whole women cant do certian things bit, i have a sense of humor and this book did actually make me laugh out loud a couple times.Which books can usually never do.So i would recommend this book to anyone not easily offended.Everyone needs to read at least 30 minutes a day and this is a good choice and will keep you entertained.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bill Hicks
Is this something original from Leary or just more stolen material from Bill Hicks....Leary biggest thief in comedy.Bet if you read really old stuff from Hicks...you might find he wrote a show about a drunk firefighter. Nothing original here.

2-0 out of 5 stars Humor Amid Some Very Long Rants
Dennis Leary covers a large assortment of topics including all areas of entertainment, politics, life, and celebrity. The theme of the book is in line with Leary's stand-up style which should give you a good idea of what to expect. If you are unfamiliar with Dennis Leary, he comes across like Jerry Seinfeld's surly cousin; observational humor with a tone of irritability.

Leary is very funny at times, but I would not rate this book very high in comparison to those from many other well known comedians.Too many of Leary's jokes tend to be aimed at shock value instead of quality wit or genuine humor. While some elements leave you laughing out loud, most of the routine in just exceptionally long-winded, often requiring pages of reading before punch lines are delivered.Leary is the master of tedious rants, but this book could have been vastly improved had he edited out many of the lackluster segments.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was great
I laughed out loud so many times while reading this book.I love Denis Leary's sense of humor and he writes just the way he speaks, which some people can't figure out how to do.Sarcasm is great and Leary uses it a lot.The stories involving his mother were great reads. He had a lot of funny things to talk about from his past and I enjoyed reading what he thinks of other situations.I have been a fan of Leary for a long time and I'm glad this book didn't let me down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Denis Leary is priceless, love the book!
I love Denis Leary, best potty mouth in town! I still look forward to his "dress off" with Craig Ferguson on The Late Late Show.
If you haven't seen his movie "The Ref" you are really missing out on a great laugh fest. I had to buy it also. Money well spent in both cases.
Enjoy. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE Denis but did not enjoy this book at all!
I was so completely disappointed by this book.I guess it just wasn't my style.I am Denis' #1 fan and was really bummed.Certainly didn't finish it.I felt like I completely wasted my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Enjoyable Replay of an Entertaining, Irreligious, Even Thoughtful Show
Trying to sum up Leary's (and Tolan's) humor is like trying to catch a gas molecule with a fish landing net, just forget it.Ever since season one, my wife and I have laughed, gasped, felt our throats tighten and eyes water, all in a time span of 2 minutes. If you have attention deficit disorder ("ADD" for you smart guys out there), you'll love this insanely-paced show and this book about it.It brings all the great, and not so great, memories of the series first seasons quickly back in focus. While reading it and looking at the pretty pictures, I found myself thinking, "What an incredible roller coaster ride this has been over the years!Look at all that has happened to all these wonderful characters, and how they've developed, good or bad, as time has passed by".
The pictures from, and episode synopsis for the first four seasons, is a great review of a wonderful show.Season four had some weaker moments in the writing department, in my personal opinion, (which along with $3.49 and tax will get you a cafe mocha at Starbucks)but happily for me, season five has come back with a real bang!Seeing inside the very closed and private family known as a firehouse, is a privilege very few of us civilians get to see.No, this isn't a realistic depiction of firefighters lives, just some of the flavor of it.It wasn't meant to be another "Emergency" with Johnny and Roy making 99.9% of their saves and never losing a member of their shift. This is Denis and Peter taking civilians idolized picture of firefighters, (oh yes, and Catholics too!) and showing that they are in reality, still human beings with lots of problems like the rest of us.They just don't share them with anyone outside of the firehouse family, because we just wouldn't understand what they are talking about, sort of like listening to Einstein explaining quantum mechanics."What did he just say?"Humor is reality squared, and Leary squares THAT!Rescue Me is a wild exaggeration of the lives of a special type of people, who are willing to lay their lives on the line for perfect strangers, every time they roll out the station bay doors.Firefighters and Paramedics have feelings and emotions too.And demons. The same as you and me.But they care more about helping others than telling everyone in the world about their own problems, like most of the rest of us.That's what I think Denis and Peter are trying to portray on the TV screen.
Bottom line, if you're still watching the show after 5 seasons, buy the book, you'll really enjoy it.In case you are wondering, no, I've never even met Denis, but I really admire the guy for what "The Leary Foundation" has done for our friends in the fire service. And since you're STILL reading this, protect your family by checking your smoke alarms every week and replacing the batteries every October.Stay safe out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny As Hell
When I first opened the book and saw almost all excerpts from the scripts I thought this might not bewhat I was hoping for.I bought it thinking that there'd be some behind the scenes stories that might be interesting. There is some, but not a lot. What they did do is select certian topics or issues that have come up in the series and then put up parts of the scripts that dealt with those issues. And they do it very well because I was laughing out loud every time I picked it up in the john(Good bathroom reading). If you're a big time fan, then you'll really get a kick out of this book...

3-0 out of 5 stars Where's Damian??
Shouldn't this book have included Damian? Or did I imagine this series actually once had an interesting young character? C'mon people! Damian is the son of Rescue Me's Holy Ghost. Don't you think he was worth mentioning?? Rumor is the Prodigal Son is in training to fight fires and save damsels in sexual distress. Revised Edition. Soon, I hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars book review

Product Description

Ann Leary's hilarious, poignant, surprising, and heartfelt memoir, An Innocent, a Broad, is a phenomenon -- a fascinating, hugely entertaining chronicle of two simultaneous, unexpected births: of a baby and a major show-business career.

When Ann and her husband, then unknown actor-comedian Denis Leary, flew to London in the early nineties, neither anticipated the adventure that was in store for them. Ann, in her second trimester of pregnancy, looked forward to a carefree mini-vacation in England before the onset of motherhood. Denis saw his upcoming appearance on a BBC comedy program as the opportunity he needed to rocket his career forward. Although they had packed for only two nights, it would be five long months before they would be able to return to the United States.

Ann's premature labor began the morning after the couple arrived in London and she suddenly found herself an unwitting yet grateful hostage of Britain's National Health Service -- a stranger in a strange land, abruptly plunged into a world of breast pumps and midwives, blood oxygen levels, mad cow disease, and poll-tax riots. Desperately worried about the health of their tiny, prematurely born son, Jack, Ann struggled to adapt to motherhood and make sense of a very different culture while, simultaneously, Denis found himself an overnight sensation on London's comedy scene.

At once an intimate family memoir, a lively travelogue, a touching love story, an inside look at the entertainment industry, and a side-splitting comedy of errors, Ann Leary's An Innocent, a Broad is an utterly engaging and unforgettable look at the bizarre twists and hairpin turns one can encounter on the road of life -- whether that road winds through a familiar neighborhood or a frustratingly foreign land.

Amazon.com Review
Just 26 weeks into her first pregnancy, Ann Leary's water broke--an event she sardonically refers to as "the PROM" (doctor-speak for "premature rupture of membranes). Unfortunately for her, the "PROM" took place while she was strolling along Oxford Street during a weekend trip to London, where her (then-unknown) husband Denis Leary was booked to perform a BBC comedy show. Forbidden to return home and placed on total bed rest, Ann gets "knackered" from the medications pumped into her body to prevent premature labor. In some of the book's funniest passages, she makes great efforts to prevent her many hospital roommates from discovering she's American, lest they suspect she's freeloading off the National Health Service. (Don't let the bad pun of the book's title put you off; Ann's sense of humor is often as biting and gritty as her husband's).

Despite the doctors' best efforts, baby Jack is born two weeks later, while Denis is back in the U.S. working at comedy clubs (and trying to keep the couple from being evicted from their apartment). Jack is in relatively good shape, but Ann's mental state is at risk,as sleep deprivation, anxiety, and loneliness get the best of her. Among her postpartum goofs is befriending another woman whose baby is also in intensive care; she mistakes her for a slim, serene Earth Mother instead of the heroin-addict she really is. So, An Innocent, A Broad is not so much a drama of Jack's survival as much as it is a chuckle-fest at the expense of both Ann's predicament and of the Brits in general, whose overwrought sense of propriety is mocked non-stop. Beware if you think this might seem a perfect gift for a pregnant woman; the belly laughs are constant and likely to cause any expectant woman's water to break. --Erica Jorgensen ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Leary is great!
This is a fun book. Ann Leary is as funny as her husband. I read this when I was pregnant and it was very engaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Innocent A Broad
Such a refreshing take on premature births. Leary's humour is such a breath of fresh air! Loved it and highly recommend to anyone who wants to laugh.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and poignant
I loved this book. Ann Leary writes with wonderful self deprecating humor. You will be laughing and crying. If you are a Denis Leary fan this book will also give you details about how they met.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Memoir!
Funny, touching, and witty, I would recommend this book.Any woman who is a Denis Leary fan will become an even bigger fan of his wife (a talented writer in her own right) after reading this!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hi-larious
Ann Leary, wife of comedian Denis Leary, took a weekend trip to London during Ann's second trimester of her first pregnancy. The plan was for Denis (then practically unknown) to do a gig on a television show, do a little sightseeing and go home. What they didn't anticipate was Ann going into labor while walking along London's streets. Suddenly a weekend trip turned into a five month stay in Britain at the mercy of Britain's National Health Service. Leary hilariously recounts her attempts to avoid the American stereotypes while at the same time second-guessing every move the doctors and nurses make. It's scary enough to give birth to a two pound baby, but to do it in another country where the health care is FREE is quite frightening. At least to Leary. Thankfully for us she is willing to recount her fears, neurosis and ignorance of British culture.

This book was quite funny. Leary is an excellent writer and it's obvious that there is more that one comedian in the family. I really enjoyed reading this memoir. For anyone who's ever had a baby or traveled to another country--this is recommended. ... Read more

Product Description
Funny, moving account of three months in London that changed three lives forever, following the premature arrival of baby Jack, by wife of comedian and film star Denis Leary. An affectionate take on the Brits: why a consultant goes from Mr to Dr to Mr; the filthy taste of Lucozade and the weird but ultimately successful workings of the NHS. An incredible series of events kicks off during what was supposed to have been a brief, weekend trip to England for Denis to appear on 'Live at Paramount City'. At the time, Denis was an unknown comic still struggling for his big break and Ann was just five-and-a-half months pregnant. Their weekend getaway took an unexpected turn the morning after their arrival, when Ann's waters broke as they strolled along Oxford Street. The premature start to Jack's entry into the world saw Ann end up in University College Hospital while Denis used the following months to make it in Britain as a stand up star, partying with Joe Strummer and Mick Jagger in his spare time. It would be five months before the family would return to the United States. The Leary's lives were suddently altered as they now revolved around the NHS, poll tax riots, mad cow disease and a 24-hour badger watch on British TV. This account of the Leary's three months in London is a travel log, an intimate and moving look at family life and the birth of a baby, as well as an insider's account of launching a major career in show business. ... Excerpt: Sir Stephen Tyrone Colbert, KSJ, DFA, (pronounced ; born on May 13, 1964) is an American political satirist, writer, comedian and television host. He is the host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report, a satirical news show in which Colbert portrays a caricatured version of conservative political pundits. Colbert originally studied to be an actor, but became interested in improvisational theatre when he met famed Second City director Del Close while attending Northwestern University. He first performed professionally as an understudy for Steve Carell at Second City Chicago; among his troupe mates were comedians Paul Dinello and Amy Sedaris, with whom he developed the critically acclaimed sketch comedy series Exit 57. Colbert also wrote and performed on the short-lived Dana Carvey Show before collaborating with Sedaris and Dinello again on the cult television series Strangers with Candy. He gained considerable attention for his role on the latter as closeted, gay history teacher Chuck Noblet. It was his work as a correspondent on Comedy Central's news-parody series The Daily Show, however, that first introduced him to a wide audience. In 2005, he left The Daily Show to host a sp...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=335195 ... Read more

Leary is the star and co-creator of the television show Rescue Me, which begins its sixth season in June 2010. Leary was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, the son of Irish Catholic immigrants. Through marriage, Leary is a third cousin of talk show host Conan O'Brien and has jokingly said on Late Night with Conan O'Brien that "all Irish people are related."
