5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent basic guide to the art and philosophy of Bruce Lee by his number one student.
This is a fantastic overview of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do by his number one student, the legendary Dan Inosanto. This book was published in 1976 but I am fortunate to have a signed (by Dan Inosanto) copy. This excellent book covers conversation with the author, Wing Chun, Jun Fan, Jeet Kune Do, The way of JKD, Beyond Bruce Lee, The JKD family tree and JKD terminology. In conclusion, this is a book for anyone who is interested in the evolution of Jeet Kune Do and how other arts influenced Lee's thinking about the reality of combat.Rating: 5 Star.Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Martial Art Myths, Season of the Warrior: A poetic tribute to warriors, Pro-Systems Combatives Vol. 1, 2, Monadnock Defensive Tactics System, Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton, PR-24 Police Baton Advanced Techniques, Never Trust a Politician, Haiku Moments: how to read, write and enjoy haiku)

5-0 out of 5 stars i had this when i was too young to understand what it was!!
i had a rare 1st edition copy of this and 1 or 2 other "bruce lee" books(paper back).my uncle brought them back from korea after he served there during vietnam.if i had realized how special they were i would have held onto them!!i was 8 or 9 when they were given to me.hind sight is 20/20!!!!!sigh,another in a long line of things ive had and lost.oh well its just stuff,or is it?!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Warrior Art
This book teaches one how to kick freaking ass if neccessary.
Of course Dan Inosanto includes the philosophical aspects of JKD in this book, so it's not all about 'ass-whoppin' but the ass kicking part is great.
Keep in mind that Dan Inosanto is considered pretty much the co-creator of JKD.He helped Bruce Lee all along the way so he deserves credit as being co-creator (almost).
Also, keep in mind that JKD is not so much a rigid system as much as it is a way of staying flexible and being efficient in your fighting skills.Understanding the Tao (way, system, flow)of fighting, not so much really a 'style' per se.Bruce Lee in his later years was very clear on that.He didn't want it to be seen as yet another style as much as a whole philosphical/spiritual system to bring into your fighting that can bring one closer to spiritual enlightenment.
So, get this book, learn to get to enlightenment through physical action and kick freakin ass (in self-defense).

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book by Dan
IN MEMORY OF MARIO PONTILLO
Since the late 1970's, I have studied Mr. Lee's "Way of the Intercepting fist." I have the 1st editions of all the "best" books on Bruce's work.
Dan published this in 1976, I have the original in my possession. It use to belong to Mario, whom was a great fighter that followed Bruces teachings from afar. Mario has passed on to better things, just as Bruce has. Get this book if you can.

My favorite quote: "Knowing is not enough, you must apply; willing is not enough, you must do." -Bruce Lee

Please do not hesitate to check out my Poetry book that I published while in the U.S. Navy in 2003; "Under the Rose: Poetry of Tragedy, Essence, and Romance"

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
A true work of art. Dan takes the reader through the reform and changes jkd under went following Bruce Lee's passing as well as showing many techniques of jkd. At this point in time the book being almost 20 years old it is just as informative and enjoyable to page through today. Unfortunatly I borrowed my copy to a friend almost 15 years ago and haven't seen it since. I truly hope the book is put into re-print so I may buy another copy. Not only does Dan take the reader through the history and comcepts of jkd he also loads the book with pictures of the(now)old Filipino Kali Academy. Truly a collectors item. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great intro to a fun subject
I was looking for a book for a nephew who was interested in martial arts films and came across this one, which was attractive, useful, and extremely readable. It's a great gift for those who want an introduction to this interesting figure.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bruce lee

The book, Bruce Lee by Linda Tagliaferro, is an action-packed biography, including Bruce Lee in his fantastic movies like: "Enter the Dragon", "Fists of Fury", "Way of the Dragon," "The Chinese Connection". "Way of the Dragon" was later known as "Return of the Dragon" because it was released in the United States after Bruce's final movie, "Enter the Dragon".

I would rate this book with four stars because this book has a lot of action in it and good fighting sequences. The book also shares about marriageto Linda Lee having two kids, Shannon and Brandon Bruce Lee .Brandon was born on February 1, 1965 and Shannon was born on April 19, 1969.

On March 31, 1993 a tragedy happen in the making of "The Crow" Brandon died. He thought he was about to get shot with a blank but instead he was shot with a .44-caliber. Eric Draven pointed the gun at Brandon. He fired the gun and Brandon fell to the floor. The scene ended, but Brandon didn't get up.

Read this book you will like this biography very much by Linda Tagliaferro.

3-0 out of 5 stars Bruce lee, easy as a b c
Linda Tagliaferro's biography Bruce Lee offers an uncomplicated outline of Lee's life for young readers in the nine to twelve age group. The book portrays Lee as a positive role model for youngsters of any ethnic background. Additionally, the book gives brief scenarios for all of Bruce Lee's adult films and also offers a brief and thoughtful outline of Brandon Lee's short life and film career.

Tagliaferro traces Lee's Life from his birth in San Francisco in 1940 to his all too brief brush with fame in Hong Kong before his sudden death in 1973 and subsequent posthumous stardom. The childhood years of Bruce `never sits still' Lee in Hong Kong are nicely sketched by Tagliaferro. Also the descriptions of Lee's early days in America given by his various friends are touching. For example, Lee's life at Ruby Chows Chinese Restaurant in Seattle as recounted by his friend Skip Ellsworth.Lee's room is described as being, `exactly the same size as a normal closet. He slept on the floor and the "desk" that he studied on was a wooden apple box.' Bruce kept his clothes folded on the floor next to his bed. There was one bare lightbulb hanging from the ceiling'.However, perhaps understandably, the later, more complex years of Bruce Lee's life are less fully portrayed.

The `facts' are presented simply and clearly. However, adult readers will be only too well aware that the `facts' being presented are only one version of Bruce Lee's story. My main criticism of the book is that the absence of any real interest in Bruce Lee by Linda Tagliaferro is a weakness. Also the previous titles by Linda Tagliaferro for example, Genetic Engineering: Progress or Peril? chart a rather odd trajectory into writing about Bruce Lee. Overall however, Bruce Lee is a very pleasant little book; well illustrated with carefully chosen photographs on nearly every page. Furthermore, it attempts to offer children a positive message about what can be achieved in the face of obstacles and discrimination. For adult readers, it's strictly for the `must have everything about Bruce Lee type'.Otherwise, find a child you can buy it for, then borrow it!

All quotes taken from, Bruce Lee, by Linda Tagliaferro, (A&E Lerner Publications 2000).

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, informative book.
Well-written, well-balanced book on Bruce Lee, with good pictures and some interesting facts I hadn't heard before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for all

5-0 out of 5 stars tao of jeet kine do
great philosophy book, must read twice to understand its meaning, not all applies to one individual but many things will, as a martial artist and in life in general.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This is a great book, not only on the subject of martial arts, but also the philosophy of life offered. You really get a sense of who Bruce Lee was as a person from reading his thoughts on the subject of life in general, which I found inspiring. As far as the quality of this hard cover version of the book, it is decent, but not perfect in that it is basically a paperback book glued to a hardcover, rather than a real hard cover book that is interwoven into the hard cover, as real hard cover library books are.I still would have have bought this book for the price having known this prior however.

5-0 out of 5 stars His response was awesome.
My best friend's birthday was coming up and I was at a loss as to what to get him.
I knew he liked this sort of thing and of course, Bruce Lee.
The day he called to tell me he got it was awesome. (It was a surprise)
He said he'd owned the book several times in his life and had had it lost and/or stolen every time.
He was happy to have it once again and I was happy with the decision to purchase it.
100% satisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Was expecting a lot more instead of basically Bruce's notes presented in an all most comic book form.If you took out all the over spacing this book would be perhaps 30 pages? Plus side is you see Bruce's thoughts and insight on paper.

3-0 out of 5 stars Zen and the Art of Kicking Butt
Bruce Lee was a very interesting man. If you're just curious about Bruce and want to know more about him, you'll probably like this book, but there may be other books about him that would suit you better. Personally, I had a keen interest in Zen, and I would say that there are about 30 pages in this book (out of 200) which shed a great deal of light on Bruce's notions of Zen. In contrast, the bulk of the book is given over to a detailed exposition of Bruce's approach to the martial arts: how to fight, how to prepare oneself for fighting, and how to use strategy and tactics to basically beat the daylights out of someone who is trying to kill you. I was surprised that there was not more space devoted to kicking, because I see some of Bruce's old fight scenes where he uses kicking extensively. However, I would very much recommend this book to anyone interested in American boxing, because Bruce really lays out a thorough method for it. As for Zen, there are some heavy ideas laid out in this book, but those are concentrated in the sections at the beginning and near the end of the text. In any case, lovers of Kung Fu fighting are sure to enjoy... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent biography
This is a very good biography. Most of the other books regarding Bruce's life are more into his films and don't get into much more than that. This book has very detailed accounts of his life. There is some great stuff in here about how Bruce and his Chinese friends would goad the English boys into fights when he was young (to test their skills). Also he staged all kinds of practical jokes on people! He had a great sense of humor! I was very happy to read about his trips to India (attempting to film The Silent Flute). Absolutely great stuff in here. Some very touching stories in here, too.He attempted to marrya Japanese girl several times, but it didnt' work out. She wasn't interested in marrying him. There is some very good stuff in here. They have some great pictures in here, too, but sometimes they spread them over two pages where it doesn't make sense to do that because the spine of the book is over his head or something, so I wish they would have done a better job laying out the pictures.I also would have liked to see the book in color, and I don't know why they put an artists drawing of him on the cover when there are so many excellent actual pictures of him. But that's ok the material here is very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse biography of anyone ever
Is Robert Clouse capable of writing above the 8th grade level? After reading "The Making of Enter the Dragon" and then the first two-thirds of this one (I couldn't take anymore) I have my doubts.

He isn't a bad director. He IS a bad writer, unless he is a master sandbagger.

I have been a Bruce Lee fan for more than 20 years so I naturally thought I would love this book.I didn't.It was one of the few books that I was unable to finish. After 125 pages, I just couldn't bear to have my intelligence insulted any longer.Neither will you.

Buy this for your 12 year old nephew who watches Kung Fu theatre and who takes Tae Kwon Do lessons at the YMCA.He will love it.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good pictorial biography
This book presents an excellent pictorial biography of Bruce Lee. It lacksdetailed information on his life but compensates for this by presentingexcellent pictures of Bruce in his daily life and in his screen endeavours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce lee Biography is a good book

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have book for Bruce Lee Fans
A must have for all Bruce Lee fans. The interviews were great. I only wished that there was an interview on Guru Dan Inosanto. I am not sure why it was not included in this book. Guru Dan is among the few of students alive today spreading the art of JKD. However his daughter is included in this book. Overall its a great book and a great buy as a gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee Conversations
I have read alot of Bruce Lee biographies. This one is awesome because it gives first hand accounts of the life and training of a legend. From original student and friends who where there, we get an insigtht to what bruce was thinking, how he evolved and alot of his training methods. would highly reccommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about the little dragon.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE JAMES DEAN OF MARTIAL ARTS MOVIES
Let me just start off by saying I'm not what you would call a big Bruce Lee fan.Yes,I do own all of his martial arts movies. And yes,I have read my share of books about his life. And I wholeheartedly believe in more than a few of his principles about unarmed combat. But unlike his fans(root word, fanatic)I don't believe he was the greatest fighter whoever lived.A great martial artist, yes.A great fighter,no.To be considered a great fighter you should have more than three or four documented fights on your resume.Anything other than those fights,in my opinion, are just rumours. If you're going to go by heresay than Count Dante truly was the"deadliest man alive".The few documented fights Lee had were from a western-styled boxing tournament that he competed in while in high school. This book mentions that he won that tourney, but it fails to mention that he was knocked on his assets before finally beating the defending champ in the title bout. And that's why I'll always have this image of Joe Frazier walking through Lee's best shots(kicks and punches)and then depositing him in the sixth row with a left hook. Now,after saying all of that let me say I loved this book. You see this book isn't about Bruce Lee the mythical fighter. It's about Bruce Lee the pop culture icon.It consists of interviews from various people who were influenced by him in some way or another. Some of these people are famous, others you've probally never heard of.Some actually knew him.Like karate/kick-boxing champ Joe Lewis, who finally explains why he turned down the star-making role in the movie Way of The Dragon that went to Chuck Norris.Others, like Sugar Ray Leanord, were simply influenced by what they saw him do in the movies.I recieved this book for my birthday and I'm glad I did.To me Bruce Lee is a pop culture icon on the same level as an Elvis,James Dean or Three Stooges. No one could possibly deny that. And he was in fact one of the most influential entertainers of the 20th century.I just don't think of him as being an invincible fighter. But that didn't stop me from enjoying this book.In fact I recommend it. ... Did Bruce Lee take his training seriously?
"While Bruce was in Hong Kong filming in late 1971 or early 1972, he had his weight
equipment and training gear shipped to him," says Ted Wong, who met Lee in 1967 and
trained with him for more than six years. "He wanted to stay in shape. So we packed his
bags, but we did not send any clothes because he said he could buy them cheap in Hong
Kong. We just packed training equipment. When he saw all the bags filled with training
equipment, he laughed and said, ‘Now I’m going to be able to do lots of training.’"
And train he did.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice attempt at an idea for the Little Dragon
for $.99 you can't complain too much.I was hoping for a little more "meat" though. It is a short, several page excerpt of some of the weight training techniques Lee used to do.A couple of the exercises were unique, and there was some brief history and goals to each exercise, but would have been great if there was maybe double the information, including maybe some of the many freehand workouts Lee used in his strength training.Hopefully the idea of this will be expanded on and more variations to come. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars avery good book on a true warrior
i've always been a big bruce lee fan and this book though it repeats itself alot, takes you to some of the events and circumstances he was going through and dealing with. he was truly a ground breaker and a peace maker who made an incredible impact on so many lives. a must have book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but...
It was a pretty good book, however, like people have mentioned, some of the stuff is repeated. A lot. I don't know how many interviews he did in that period of time, but I wish they had done better choosing what they did instead of repeating so much of the same stuff. The one I really wish they had put in there was his most famous interview. The one they video taped, where he talks about everything while trying out for a tv show. If you've seen the new Enter the Dragon 25 year anniversary, its the one before the movie that lasts like 15 minutes. They should have included a text version in this book.

If you find this book on sale at a used book store or something, pick it up, it's worth it. But don't go spending full price for this, because it isn't worth it. If you find it on Amazon here along with another book (like Tao of Gung Fu and this together) then go ahead and get them. To buy this book solo though would just be a waste, you would have it done within a couple of hours.

2-0 out of 5 stars Still Bruce, but...
I heard several of these interviews from other sources. If YOU haven't then the book might be worth your time and money, but then again even the interviews in the book get old. Each interviewer asks the same questions and Bruce gives the same answers. It's less thrilling than other Bruce Lee books.

4-0 out of 5 stars words of the dragon
This book gave me an insight into the personality of Bruce Lee.it is the second book about him i have read. The only thing i do not like about this book is one peice of information which it gives without correcting it inthe notes. He didn't die in hospital; he died in the house of an actresswhich he and Raymond Chow had gone to see about offering her a role in thefilm Game of Death. While they were there, Bruce got a headache and took apill and retired to the bedroom. That's where he died.

2-0 out of 5 stars better title 'Words about the Dragon, Press Reports'
The title of the book „Words of the Dragon, Interviews 1985-1973" reflects a little bit a wrong impression of the book. A better title would be „Words about the Dragon, Press Report 1958-1973". At the beginning of the book afew things are repeated over and over again. It seems that it would bedifficult to investigate e.g. how old Bruce Lee was when his parentsreturned to Hong Kong. Only at the end of this book one could catch a smallimpression of Bruce Lee's philosophy. His carrier as an actor comesprimarily up. The US Press didn't understand until Bruce Lee's death thathis art wasn't Karate. I expected more philosophically thoughts andbackground knowledge of his martial art. The Bruce Lee connoisseur gainedno really news and I thing the book isn't stimulating for beginners. I wasimpressed by the letter of Brandon Lee, which is printed at the end of thebook. ... I read this some time ago not long after reading Fighting spirit. Its asober and palpable read this book was. I liked the chapter on joe lewis. It put Bruce's feet on the ground and out the air of diety so many other books built around him.Thomas didnt dress this up. He portrayed the memory of Bruce as flawed and eccentric---like most of us. It made him accessible and you can appreciate Bruce as a man of plain hard work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee- Wisdom for the Way
I would like to state that I ordered this book, and it's a wonderful book with useful knowledge and wonderful photographs of Bruce per page.

If Bruce Lee ever touched your life in any way- a good introduction (or even continuation/further exploration), of Him would be in this book. This gives a simple yet valuable insight into the psychie, philosophy and wisdom of Bruce Lee.

This book proves what an advanced spiritual and intellectual human being Bruce Lee was and what He left us that was larger than the Hollywood Screen.Bruce Lee could as well, I feel, have been anything He wanted. If you ever get this book, you will see just how talented He was in other areas as well, such as being a great artist as displayed in his drawings that are featured in the book. That is something to be proud of, and it's rare someone is this versatile and percise and excellent in all that they do.

This is a great keep sake truly compiled in love and to be used with serious contemplation with deep appreciation. Thanks to his daughter Shannon for this as well as the other persons involved in this book.

I recommend it greatly for any fan of Bruce Lee and to any person really.I'm glad I ordered this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wisdom from the Ages

It is a well put together little book that has all the old favorite words of wisdom along with many others. It is made up of photos of him throughout his life with one of his sayings on the opposite page.
I have had friends who aren't even into martial arts pick it up and couldn't stop reading all the great words of Bruce Lee.
Definitely a must buy for any Bruce Lee fan!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mochizuki Does it Again
Ken Mochizuki has built a reputation over the years writing books that encourage and inspire. In this children's book, Mochizuki introduces the ideas of Bruce Lee, especially how hard work and focus pay off, especially for something of a misfit youth. The book makes no effort to teach Lee's fighting style, and Mochizuki's colloborator Dom Lee's illustrations are age-appropriate, and will delight a child reading along with an adult at bedtime.

1-0 out of 5 stars "Be Water..."doesn't hold water
I do not believe this book is endorsed by the Bruce Lee Foundation.
I believe this not only because the book obviously does not state any endorsement from Bruce Lee's family (both here in the U.S. and China) but largely because of all the inaccuracies.
What is disappointing is any person who is even remotely familiar with Bruce Lee will see the drawings in this book are blatent reworkings of still shots from Bruce's films as an adult and inaccurately placed as his childhood years.
The final insult is drawings reworked to show inaccurate martial arts positions.
Bottom line is this thin 16 pg. book is just reworkings with a few lines that might quickly bore any adult and child of any age.
Recommendation - save your money and find a real bio with actual photos of Bruce Lee. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Martial Arts Classic!
Anyone who has any interest in martial arts owes it to themselves to study this book, since it is itself a culmination of Bruce Lee's own research into effective martial strategies.

At 128 pages, the book itself is rather thin, but it wastes little time with backgrounds and anecdotes and gets right to the goods. Basic hand-to-hand fighting strategies are covered with plenty of clear photographs and no-nonsense "scientific" explanations of the strategies and techniques.

There's little "hero worship" or glamorization of Bruce Lee himself, just straight-out explanations of the techniques, with Lee demonstrating the techniques in the photographs. I suspect that this is exactly how Lee would have wanted it.

At the relatively cheap price of the book, I highly recommend it to serious martial arts students and Bruce Lee fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good martial arts book that everyone should own!
Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Bruce Lee's and M. Uyehara's, "Bruce Lee's Fighting Method; Volume 3: Skill in Techniques." This book is a direct continuation of the previous volume and will continue where that one left off.

As is stated in the introduction to this and the other three volumes in the series, Bruce Lee never intended for these books to be published. However, since his untimely passing, his wife Linda decided that she would allow them to be published. Something we should all be thankful for.

What I will attempt to do in this review is to give you a well-rounded grasp of what Bruce has written and demonstrated for you in this series of books. Although nothing can replace the value of a qualified and competent instructor, a well written book can still provide you with a wealth of knowledge if you know how to realize it and obtain it.

Like any well written book, as much as you can learn from this book by reading it, you can learn just as much if not more by reading between the lines. I particularly enjoyed the simplicity of what Bruce was trying to relay throughout this and pretty much all of his books. What may work well for one person, may not work at all for another. Therefore, you as an individual needs to research the techniques that are out there and find those that work best for you and use them. Remember, there are no superior martial arts, only superior martial artists.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee's Fighting Method, Vol. 3: Skill in Techniques (Bruce Lee's Fighting Method)
Thought the book was well thought out with it's diagramming of the various technical skills. Also the explanation of the skills were very simple but precise.

4-0 out of 5 stars This volume gives structure to the content of this series of volumes.
The Chapters are numbered from VI to XI.

After reading Chapter VI, the reader should begin to understand how the intensity and mode of a fight can change when fighters vary their distance thru the 3 ranges of long range, medium range, close range. The reader should begin to understand how fighters can test each other's behavior responses, habits and perhaps level of skill by attempting to provoke and manipulate each other thru the use of footwork to vary distance and use of feints and drawing techniques.

Chapter VII covers the attributes, advantages and form ofstrikes and defensive guard used in Jeet Kune Do.8 bad habits are listed to bring to the attention ofthe reader habits to avoid or correct one's self from doing or to take advantage of when done by the opponent.

Chapter VIII is about kicks.

Chapter IX defines and describes the use of parrying in Jeet Kune Do.The message to fighters is to fine tune their defense to save energy and effort in defensive action by not making wasteful, exaggerated moves.Elements of timing, distance, evasive footwork and awareness of the opponent's intent is covered here.
The cleverness ofBruce Lee's use of the lead handto strike while the rear hand parrys or grabs becomes understandable as the photos show that the opponent's hand is allowed to extend more fully when parried by the rear guard hand thus opening the opponent's defense for a counter strike with the lead guard hand.
In this chapter, Lee's parries are constantly compared favorably and persuasively to traditional, classical methods of blocking.

Chapter X"Targets" is about the weak, vulnerable areas of the body. There are no secret vital pressure points and no mumble jumbo about imaginary vessels and meridians in this book. All weak spots covered in this chapter are known to every one: the ribs, solar plexus, groin, shins, etc, etc.
In this chapter, Bruce Lee reminds the reader that well chosen targets can bring a fight to a quick, efficient end.Part of the purpose of this chapter is to have the reader keep these weak areas and the moves that expose them in mind when planning defense and attack techniques to use, that is, to have the fighter thinking about defending and attacking weakness as an essential component of a fighter's skills.

Chapter XIis about sparring and mentions the degenerative, decaying effect competitive sports, safety rules, regulations, and safety equipment have on martial arts and combative systems.
Covered subjects include combinations, drawing the opponents reactions, feints, timing and self confidence. The parts ofthis chapter that explain about evasive means ofdefense instead ofparries and blocks and more about bad habits is especially valuable and very much worth reading.

Hector Echavarria's 3 Volume DVD video series on KickBoxingis very similar and compatible to this series ofbooks on Bruce Lee's Fighting Method.

IN MEMORY OF MARIO PONTILLO
Since the late 1970's, I have studied Mr. Lee's "Way of the Intercepting fist." I have the 1st editions of all the "best" books on Bruce's work.
This book will walk you through the physical aspect of his methods. I recommend you get all the volumes from this series. You will need to start from the beginning; and you do that by emptying your cup so Bruce may fill it.

Product Description
For the average person, Bruce Lee was a brief star in the entertainment industry who spawned a pop culture kung fu craze. But to those who knew him, Bruce Lee was also an author, scholar, educator, philosopher, as well as a groundbreaking martial artist; a man whose creative energy and desire to grow brought him the respect of hundreds of thousands of people.

"Bruce Lee: Dynamic Becoming" is the culmination of several years of research into the life and philosophy of Bruce Lee. The book is a serious scholastic examination of Lee’s philosophy, for the first time revealing never-before-released information regarding the sources from which Lee derived it. "Bruce Lee: Dynamic Becoming" includes interviews with students and friends of Bruce Lee who were profoundly impacted by his philosophy and is the only book on the philosophy of Bruce Lee that includes commentary on the subject by noted scholars in the mainstream philosophical and scholastic community.

"Bruce Lee: Dynamic Becoming" also examines the life of the late martial arts master and includes a new theory on the mysterious death of Bruce Lee. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I found this book interesting...
I found this book interesting, especially
the 12 pages of book titles attributed to being
in Bruce Lee's "library".

Really gives a snap shot of Bruce Lee's thoughts by understanding
what he read and his thought processes.

Bruce made it very clear that in the end individual
expression, self knowledge and a journey of questioning
was the path he wished those who wanted to follow his
path to follow.

We are all on that path (journey of life) and it is
different for each of us.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting insights into Jeet Kune Do
This book was put together from different essays and interviews the author, James Bishop, wrote over the period of several years. Bruce Lee was also a philosoper, or better said: someone who occupied himself with Philosophy. There are many interesting insights to be found in this book about the much neglected philosophical side of Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do. I found the chapter on Bruce Lee and Gnostic Christianity and the interview with Bruce Lee historian John Litle particularly informative. The list of books Bruce Lee owned is unique.

Some facts are repeated several times. For instance: the author is of Irish ancestry and praises the work of a JKD sifu in bringing Catholics and Protestants together in war torn Ireland. This is something very positive but doesn't have to be repeated throughout the book. Still, this a very worthwhile purchase for any Bruce Lee enthousiast. Walk on!

Product Description
"Witty, original, and authentic. A fresh,
young Chinese-American voice."
--Adeline Yen Mah,
author of Falling Leaves

As the daughter of a Chinese-American mother and a Norwegian father, Paisley Rekdal grew up wondering where she fit in. The essays in this, her shimmering nonfiction debut, tackle thorny issues--race and identity politics, interracial desire, what it means to be a "hyphenated American"--with a fresh, feisty, and very funny new perspective.

Rekdal's family history is, as she describes it, "complicated and vaguely dangerous," and at the center of this strange world is her mother--a smart, stubborn, complex woman who adores her daughter. Rekdal exposes the foibles of family, friends, and lovers, but never spares herself, capturing both global and personal struggles with a critical, compassionate and humorous lens. The Night My Mother Met Bruce Lee flows effortlessly from stunning cultural observation to a recollection of an embarrassing travel anecdote. Her destinations vary widely--a classroom in South Korea, a Japanese family's living room, Main Street in Natchez, Mississippi, a Taipei shopping mall, a beach in the Philippines, and even her own bedroom. In each, she explores the vast differences between cultures, the feeling of being an outsider, the constant battle to understand and be understood.

The Night My Mother Met Bruce Lee proves that shifting the frames of identity can be tricky, exhilarating--and revelatory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complex issues, disturbing insights, but very readable
There are always stereotypes to be stripped down, aren't there?

Rekdal's themes (race, how Americans are perceived overseas, how Americans perceive each other) make you think, but her writing won't make you struggle. Her essays, built around episodes of her life, are sad, funny, entertaining and insightful.

An excellent book.Highly recommended. I wish I could teach a course called "Race in America" just so I could get more people to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book Well-Worth Reading
Ms. Rekdal's numerous observations are personal and touching. Many Americans have struggled with an identity crisis. I understand fully the crushing power of long and brutal silences mentioned in the text. I am so glad that Ms. Rekdal is not silent at all.

5-0 out of 5 stars captivating
i am so happy to have stumbled upon this book. This author is so intelligent, observant, witty and creative. This book was charming and relatable.i laughed aloud as some of my own personal experiences were so similar, it was amazing.Rekdal is able to put into words feelings that i hadn't been able to describe.Even if one hasn't had cultural identity questions about him/herself this book is enjoyable and some sentences read almost like poetry. Her stories are very insightful and she captures the essence of how people think and react.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
Well, you have BOTH Ha Jin AND Arthur Golden praising it on the back cover--what can you expect? (I like one and not the other). While the cover made me think that this was going to be a "wacky," irreverent account by a young, half-Chinese woman, the book is instead an extremely well-written, thought-provoking colletion of essays on ethnicity and identity. Rekdal is a poet, and it shows in her evocative descriptions, in her lyrical passages, in an effortlessly beautiful line rendered for the reader's benefit. Grappling with the vexatious issue of personal identity, Rekdal comes up with great insight and meaning into the problem without being narcisstic or excessively introspective; the book succeeds brilliantly wihtout offering any simple, pat conclusions. Though the essay's topics are somewhat disjointed--they go from America to Korea to China to childhood, etc--the disconnected structure seems to be part of the point: as the subtitle suggests, these are "observations of not fitting in." I liked her juxtaposition of the uncanny, the frustrating, the disappointing things along with the beautiful, the personal, the "mini-epiphanic" aspects.

And yes, she is also very witty. The humor is very sharp. I found myself laughing hysterically at an Elvis reference and I normally don't find him amusing. Finally, as someone who also spent a year teaching high school students in a small city in Korea, I was delighted and amazed to read about experiences that I related to. I'm grateful for that alone, but it's a great book in all other aspect as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars From a Woman's Perspective
I have to take in account the mind-set of women in 70's; but the way Linda Caldwell Lee is telling her version of life with Bruce Lee numerous times over in my opinion is oppressed and subservient, and she seems to embellish that role in his life, and the excuses that was made to spare his ego and state of mind is a hard pill for me to swallow. Given what has been written and reported on, shall I say the "Dark side" of Bruce Lee, she endured it by choice and has profited quite handsomely for the pass 37 years

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
This is a great biography. This is a must read for all fans of Bruce Lee.Linda pulls no punches, is completely honest, and very thorough in her tale of her husband.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee, the Man and the Fighter
This is the best biography I've read about Lee.Bruce Lee's wife captures the intensity of this very gifted man.He was truly incredible.I thought this might be a "gloss over" because she is writing about her husband, but she chose to tell the good, the bad, and the ugly. After finishing this very fast read, you will have a much better, balanced picture of an extraordinarly talented martial artist.Lee was a perfectionist bordering on fanaticism. He was born with several gifts that enhanced his performance: superior reflexes, extended reach, etc.He took the best from many different fighting styles and combined them into a martial philosophy that was ahead of it's time.Lee hated the "style trap" so many martial artists fall into."Use what works, discard the rest." So said Bruce Lee.

Synopsis

The legendary martial artist and film star Bruce Lee had manystudents, but few teachers. Grandmaster Jhoon Rhee, who brought TaeKwon Do from Korea to the United States in 1956 and has taught over250 members of the U.S. Congress, is one of those teachers. Bruce Leeand I is Rhee’s intimate, non-fiction, biographical account of the10-year friendship between these two martial arts legends. The bookincludes 19 private letters from Bruce Lee to Jhoon Rhee, and BruceLee photos from the private Jhoon Rhee Collection, andbehind-the-scenes stories about the making of The Green Hornet, TheBig Boss, Enter the Dragon, Fist of Fury, and other Bruce Leetelevision shows and films. In this beautifully-designed, mainstreambook with mass market appeal, Rhee explains how he taught hisfriend’s secret punching technique to Muhammad Ali, who thencredited “Mr. Jhoon Rhee’s Accupunch” with his knock out ofBritish champ Richard Dunn. “Jhoon Rhee and Bruce had ateacher-teacher relationship, one built on mutual respect.” writesLinda Lee Cadwell, wife of the late Bruce Lee, in her foreword. Thebook has 15 chapters, 22 photos, 19 reproductions of private lettersthat include Bruce Lee’s poetry, an index, and footnotes. ... Read more

Jhoon Rhee was a friend of Bruce Lee's.Bruce Lee did more for martial arts in the west than perhaps anyone else. The image of Lee is still recognized almost thirty years after his death. This book covers the time of Lee and Rhee friendship and a the short time afterwards. One is not going to learn any big secrets about either but will learn more about the human side of both.It is a quick and easy read.I am not sure why this book has such a huge price on it as it is still in print. You can find it through theTKD Times website and buy it for about $20.oo.A nice collection to either your Bruce Lee or Jhoon Rhee libraries. It has always been obvious that TKD kicks were part of Bruce Lee's study of martial arts.
