This Has to be the most accurate account of "Boo Boo's" life
This book written by Bruce's wife Linda with high quality glossy photo's (in the middle) has to be the most accurate account of his life. Written so near to his death when all is still clear in one's mind, I feel this givesthe book the edge over some others that I have read claiming to be the lifestory. As an example, we all understand that Bruce hurt his back badly atone point in his life and it is common knowledge that he was laid up formany weeks/months. What is not clear is not is how this came about - somestories say that he got in a fight and was kicked in the back whilst otherssay that he had bad muscle spasms around his spine causing pressure onnerves etc which grew to be too much. However, in this book Linda statesthat she found him in agony in the gym (and this rings true from personalexperiences with students) on the floor unable to move due to attempting todeadlift (stiff legged) a 200 lb barbell - which if he could achieve wouldenable him to stand up even if a grown man had got him in a head lock orsimilar. This all rings true to me and makes the other stories lessbelievable. So on this one item and that fact that it was written so nearhis death I make my assumption taht this is the most accurate account ofBruce's life that you will ever read. IT NEEDS TO BE REPRINTED.

THE RAREST BRUCE LEE BOOK ? BY HIS WIFE 1975
This is not a review as such , but i believe this book published by 'STAR BOOKS' isbn 0 352 30043 4 in the uk is the definative review of his personal life by his wife linda lee.

This is a superb read, written bysomeone who knew him best and gives a facinating insight into hislife.

My copy of the book was located back in 1985 much by accident in aoxfam shop.

I expect it is very very valuable to collectors only (ofcourse!) - if any one can give me a value (uk/us) , i would appreciatethis.

Real Deal -- The Instructions in this book worked first time and every time for me.
The 1-inch and 3-inch or Floating punches are real.They work.They are dangerous to your partner so FOLLOW the advice to use a METRO phone book and perhaps add a judogi (not a thin karate type).

I am buying another copy because my original one is lost -- when I first found this book I had some basic skill in karate, aikido, and fighting but in no way wish to claim any great expertise.I am moderately strong with fairly quick strong hands -- as a point of reference.

I read the book quickly (takes only a few minutes, to an hour or so if you read slowly); I did NOT spend weeks or months doing the exercises; I practiced for a few minutes solo.Then I tried it.

It worked first time (it worked too well really*), and has worked every time since, although I seldom demonstrate it and have ALWAYS done so in a static position (not moving around fighting or sparring.)

*The first time I tested it, I made what might have been a serious mistake in using a fairly small local phone book instead of a large metro area tome -- don't use anything less than 2 1/2-3 inches in thickness until you understand this.If in doubt, ADD more padding like a big folded towel or judogi.

Fortunately, even on that first attempt I "pulled" it somewhat (maybe 50%) by not reaching very 'deep' for the full effect.My partner was not permanently injured. However, my partner would NOT let me repeat the technique even after the offer of a larger phone book and more padding.

Later I showed it to my aikido training partners with full padding (New Orleans metro book and judogi) but even then I have always pulled it a bit.I am pretty sure that I have never let it go more than about 70%, maybe less. Still it works.

If it doesn't work for you then you either need to read and follow the instructions more carefully, practice more thoroughly, relax morecompletely, MAYBE do more push-ups (least likely but you do need some strength and speed), or all of the above.

Seriously it works.I have never taught it due to the responsibility, but the book does describe it accurately and completely (unlike many of the descriptions on web sites and forums**) and so there you are if you want to learn it.

** So far, every description I have read on the web has left out at least one component, usually such articles leave out a couple of key points.I would not be surprised if the punch works somewhat without all the elements, but I KNOW it works if you follow the instructions completely.

P.S.> I would like to practice it "moving/sparring" if I can find the right partner(s) to do this safely.My current Systema & Tai Chi instructor is likely up to the challenge -- he's a tough one.

Go take lessons!
This book is getting a lot of flak for not imparting Bruce Lee's devastating martial arts secrets, but of course the flaw here is that you're trying to learn martial arts from a book. It's fine as an overview if you're curious about the basic mechanics involved, but it's not the modern equivalent of the mystical ancient scrolls you've been taught to expect in those late night cable tv kung-fu movie marathons. At best, this book should only be used as a supplemental to formal instruction. If you bought this book expecting to learn this (or any) technique without real-life instruction, you have no right to whine after your friends beat you up.

Put simply, if you're serious about learning this technique you need to learn it from a person, not a paperback that you found on the internet.

Great little manual!
Great book on these mechanics! I've learned similar mechanics in Wing Chun, similar but not the same. To a martial artist, the mind and breath exercises described herein are things that could be taken into other areas of training, rather than just this technique.
If such a technique can be learned from a book, it can be learned from this book, but one must build the skill patiently and a step at a time, as it is explained.
I don't know if this is a good buy for a regular person, but it's a treasure to an impassioned martial artist.

simple and helpful but not fully statisfying
I have read the book andI think it is recommended for someone who is begginer in Wing Chun. Very good pictures help you learn the sil lim tao form, main theory of WT is explained and it includes trapping methods as well as defence tactics. This is not a book with the whole WT system neither have fully detailed descriptions of the tactics and this is the basic drawback but it is the one with the vary basics and it is simple and helpful.

A classic in every sense
I bought this book over 30 years ago & it remains THE ONE I refer to regarding preliminary technique, despite all subsequent purchases of high priced, tricked-out volumes.It is simple, to the point & a fine reference guide in case you've either forgotten or wish to confirm a concept.While you can't learn an art just from a book, no matter who the author studied/practiced with, you can refresh your recollections with this one.Buy 2, used, so you can carry one with you if the need to bone up on something becomes overwhelming while you're away from home.

Excellent Wing Chun resource for beginners.
This was the first of many publications on Wing Chun that I had recieved. It's a very thorough book on the foundations of Wing Chun. It's been awhile since I've picked my copy up, but the information sticks pretty well. The diagrams for the blocking zones come to mind, when learning the basic defence manuevers. It gives clear and concise instruction on learning the first form of Wing Chun, Siu Num Tao. The trappying hands exercises and drills are fun to do, and are very precise in the illustations.

The only thing I felt was missing was a better understanding of Chi-Sao (sticky hands) Most instuctors I've spoken with have said it's almost IMPOSSIBLE to learn sticky hands from a book. Perhaps a video series might be better in explaining the movements.

I'd recommend this book to anyone looking for the basic steps to a Wing Chun program. Perhaps followed by some of William Cheung's books as well. For a more complete beginner to advanced series, I'd recommend checking out Randy Williams textbook series on Wing Chun. They are a bit more pricy, but well worth it.

Back to basics
Don't under estimate the contents and value of information in this book.
After 20 years, I am still practicing the basics, because my
current sifu made me realize I didn't practice the basics thoroughly.
I didn't spend the time, as there were too many distractions in life.

Learn the punches, practice the punches, from 100 repetitions, work up to 1000 punches every day if you can.
Practice the blocks. My current wing chun sifu bruised my forearm with a light touch.

Practice the basics thoroughly, daily, it will serve you well.

It Was Mass Marketed, Hurried, but Nostalgic
Alex Ben Block, somewhat known the time, produces a hurried bio on Lee soon after his death, as Dell capitalizes on the death of Bruce and the Kung Fu craze. Block makes several terminology mistakes, which was much more common in the 70s when non-martial artists were largely ignorant of terms and definitions.This is an irritant, but nothing more.

Block tries to get a "feeling" about Bruce Lee's pressures, the events surrounding him, and the Hong Kong movie business - here he largely succeeds.He succeeds in the Hollywood - Hong Kong connection, but largely fails in his martial arts knowledge and those circles where Bruce walked, taught, and associated in.

My biggest disagreement? Block finds Return of the Dragon (Way of the Dragon)to be Lee's worse movie - it is my personal favorite.

Good biography
Not your typical biography.Block gets very deeply into the history of China, religious beliefs, etc. Some of that can be boring, but it's stil ok.His in depth description of the life of the 'busy ninja' is especially interesting to read.Because this book was written far more closely to Bruce's death than many books on the life of BL, it has the most in depth review of all the autopsy's I have seen.
I didn't find his review of Bruce's films on the mark all the time.There are a few interesting photos here that I haven't seen anywhere else, which was a nice bonus.When Alex Ben Block was interviewed in one of those documentaries, he really explained the BL films and the effect they had on people very well, but he didn't show too much of that attitude in the book. Still a good read.

Should be brought back to print
If you'd like to know more about the world's first Chinese American superstar, this book is the place to begin.Published not long after Bruce Lee's tragic death, it benefits from the author's in-depth interviews with many figures now lost to us, including the master screenwriter Stirling Silliphant.Great photos and great background on Angela Mao also.Worth checking out! ... Poorly Written Story Of Great Martial Artists
This is a poorly written book about two great martial artists.I've been a martial artist and a Bruce Lee fan for over 30 years and have read many books and magazine articles about the legendary martial artist, and have to say this book has been a great disappointment.The book is slow and boring and I would not recommend it to anyone.Better to read one of Jesse Glover's, Dan Inosanto's, or John R. Little's books on the subject.

Truly pathetic
This book is just plain awful.I was expecting to learn more about James Lee (who IMHO is the most underated of all JKD practioners).

Most stories are conjecture and out right lies.The authors should be ashamed of themselves.This book does nothing but tarnish the legend of Bruce Lee.

To add insult to injury, it reads like a 3rd grade book report.

If I could write this review in blood and tears, I would.

Gotta take the good w/ the bad
The first part of this book regarding Bruce Lee's training w/ Gin Foon Mark seems totally bogus ! There is no eveidence Bruce Lee ever met this guy. The book details Lee's father and Bruce himself in NY, even covering in detail their innermost thoughts,and there is no proof of this other than the oral record of this guy who has claimed for years to have taught Bruce Lee. I think actually Lee's fathers last trip to the USA was when Bruce was born in 1940 .

On the other hand the material covering Seattle and early Oakland seems to be on the up and up and very imformative.

part 2 needs a real author
this is a book that has been needed for a long time now. the early bruce, and a look back at how he developed. there's great stuff here...too bad it reads like a "junior scholastic" teen book! the authors are poor storytellers. this is bruce lee material we have all been waiting for, james yimm lee, jesse glover, wally jay, etc. the early years! fantastic! some great photos...and some not so great maps, copied from "mapquest"? the book reads like a danielle steel movie-of-the-week potboiler...boring. fantastic material, horrible presentation. like a 5-star meal on a paper plate. bruce and james history both deserve a better treatment...5 star material served as 2 star writing! poor publishing from a company that usually puts out quality books. found quite a few grammatical mistakes...so o.k. get a real writer and a proofreader too! maybe they will make-up for it with volume 2.

James Yimm Lee & Bruce: Incredible!

One Of The Best
One of the best works on the martial arts film genre. An absolute essential guide for genre buffs.

From Bankruptcy to Buyout
Well, after the original publisher going under and a new one taking up the slack, the long-promised book is finally out with the full story from China, Hong Kong, Japan, and America. As promised, the new book takes the tale full circle, from its auspicious Wong Fei Hong beginnings to the worldwide triumph of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. Not just one actor, one director, and one era, but a whirlwind tour of them all, through the Venoms,Master Killer, and women warriors to Sammo, Jet, Yuen, and all the rest. There's even a color photo section with some incredibly rare images. Perfect? Well, no. I wish there had been more from the HK independant producers, the lesser known Shaw Brothers directors, an index, and a "worst of" list (to go along with the "best of" one). A Warrior's Journey
"Bruce Lee - A Warrior's Journey" is a great compliment book to the DVD presentaion by the same name by author John Little.

This is the final and sadly incomplete contributions and work on the film entitled: The Game of Death (1972-73) by the late Bruce Lee who died at the young age of 32 in July of 1973.

This is a book that tries to fill in the many gaps of what might have been the late Bruce Lee's greatest martial arts action film. Lee had intended the film to be an expression of his personal philosophy and principles of combat which he called Jeet Kune Do. He was planning to educate the public on his personal insights, principles and philosohy of martial arts while entertaining them at the same time.

This book presents Bruce Lee's long lost original script and director notes for his incomplete film entitled: The Game of Death (1972-73) combined withwith long lost final film footage of the master in action (seen on DVD of same title) in the sequence and manner that the late Bruce Lee had intended for the film.

Although the film footage is sadly incomplete and lacks the quality that Bruce Lee's films had a reputation for it is our final look at a man that truly shook the world with his insight, philosopy and amazing on-screen presence.

I highly recommend this book as a compliment to the DVD by the same name.

Good for a martial arts newbie...
After years of running from danger, Brian Preston decides to learn to defend himself.He enrolls in a Kung Fu Academy.His plans to earn a black belt, or at least a blue belt, are derailed when he suffers rib and shoulder injuries - and his daughter Grace is born.While he heals he embarks on a series of trips to explore the history and various kinds of martial arts.His journeys take him from a quiet walk up a mountain in China to a seat at the rowdy Ultimate Fighting Championship.By the end of the book, Preston finds a form of martial arts that works for a so-called "spineless wuss" like him.
Preston writes in a readable style that alternates between a personal journal and a martial arts history lesson.I didn't know anything about martial arts when I started reading this, but neither did Preston when he began writing, so this book worked out well for me.I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in martial arts, or anyone who enjoys reading adventure-type memoirs.My only wish was that it had a few photos!

Use This Book For Toilet Paper!!!
I hate to put down anyone's work, but I had to make an exception for this, as the author of this piece of trash has no problem putting down martial art legend, Bruce Lee.Brian Preston, the author, admits he has lacked any testicular fortitude all his life and decides to set about studying and writing about the martial arts to quell the demons of his past experiences with fighting.He sets the lofty goal of obtaining a black belt in Kung Fu in one year. Brian believes he will be enough of an authority to talk about the martial arts with some intelligence after one year's time of study, please!He finds the world renowned "Sifu Bob" in Canada.We never learn Sifu Bob's last name, or maybe it is revealed later in the book, but I stopped reading this book in disgust after page 74. Sifu Bob in his expert opinion says on page 23, "Bruce Lee as a teacher, husband, and a man was deeply flawed."We are all flawed Sifu Bob, how come we did not hear your flaws? Keeping reading from page 23 to hear Sifu Bob's galling critique of Bruce Lee's fighting, techniques, and moves.Brian laps up this expert advice like a hungry kitten at fresh bowl of milk.Brian, then, with his vast experience in the martial arts, opines on page 78, that Bruce Lee hype is based only on his movies visual aspect.Bruce Lee has zero impact with his words, his collected writing a "snooze."Brian, do you see anyone quoting Sifu Bob or Master Don? How many books have they sold? How many lives have your "masters" impacted? Sure, some, but not the multitude like Bruce Lee.Did they create their own system that thousands follow today? When they pass on will they have hundreds of people visiting their graves? Mr. Preston, in short, stick with writing about such important things such as "Global Marijuana Culture" your last book, because as a martial artist you have no voice or authority.

The perspective buyer would be advised to get the book at the library or wait for this to be in the bargain bin at your local bookstore. Dont pay more than 99 cents though.If you want a REAL martial art experience book read, "Angry White Pajamas" or "Iron and Silk." I would give this book zero stars but that is not an option on Amazon.

What A Delightful and Quite Often Humorous Look at One's Mans Martial Journey
To be perfectly frank, I hadn't really heard much of anything about this book and just happened upon it earlier today while browsing the martial arts section. It has kind of an intriguing title, so I decided to pick it up and browse through it. Minutes later I was hooked!

From the first mention of fighting in a Canadian Hockey team, to being an observer ringside at a UFC card, the author really captures his experiences and those of the people around him in a very real and quite often humorous light, even though I get the feeling that at times that wasn't his intent.

The author takes you on a rather fast paced journey from his childhood exploits playing hockey in Canada, to his journey of self-discovery through the martial art of Kung Fu and his deep meditative reflections upon the inner meaning of the Bruce Lee movies, and ending ringside at a UFC card.

I found this book to be very enjoyable and a great way to relax and laugh for a couple of hours.

Great Collectible or Gift
This book gave an interesting view of Bruce Lee's life told with quotes from friends and family. Author Norman Borine was a family friend and counted Bruce Lee's mother, Grace, among his closest friends. Lee was an interesting and compelling person and this is proven by both the story of his life and the information about his great physical prowess. The book also includes many photos, both of Lee, and of exhibits in Borine's World of Bruce Lee museum. This would be a great addition to any Bruce Lee fan's collection. ... Read more

Reprint of a classic
"The Legendary Bruce Lee" is a modern reprint of an excellent book that was originally published back in the 1970s, not too long after this martial artist legend's death.However, that item has been out of print for many years, so this is a great opportunity to get a newer version of it.The modern reprinting seems to include all of the original text and photos, so it would make a great addition to your Bruce Lee collection.
